Not surprisingly, Republican-slanting Fox News picked up the story Tuesday on UFC lightweight Jacob Volkmann being put on administrative leave from his assistant high school wrestling coaching job following some negative comments he made toward Barack Obama at UFC 141.
After his win over Efrain Escudero, Volkmann told Joe Rogan that Obama should schedule a "glassectomy" with Volkmann, a joke medical procedure where "you cut your belly button out and put a piece of glass in there so when you have your head up your butt you can see where you're going."
Volkmann told Fox News that one parent had complained to Minnesota's White Bear Lake High School and that on the Friday following his victory, he was told he couldn't be around the wrestlers anymore. He added he will contact an attorney if he's not reinstated within two weeks.
Fox interviewed Gene Policinski of the First Amendment Center about the issue:
"It's offensive, but we really don't want the government to use mere offensiveness to govern speech," Policinski told FoxNews.com. "But the terms of his employment agreement might give [district officials] greater latitude."
Policinski said Volkmann's comments may provide a "negative impression" in the eyes of district officials, but noted that he appeared in the capacity of a mixed martial arts fighter -- and not an assistant wrestling coach. Remarks that pertain to the president, however, can be taken "more seriously" than those relating to other individuals, he said.
The UFC has taken no action against Volkmann and isn't expected to. This is the second time Volkmann has been put on administrative leave from the school following his infamous UFC 125 comments about Obama.

I said this earlier when the story broke
and I’ll say it again. Stop being an idiot and publicly stating that violent things should happen to the president and the secret service will stop visiting your doorstep. If you are a public employee and did this once and got placed on leave for it, perhaps you shouldn’t be so mind-fuckingly stupid as to do so again.
Or you could be Jacob Volkmann.
Cory Braiterman - January 10, 2012
I think he believes in the fictional phrase “freedom of speech.”
MaximumWatermelon - January 10, 2012
freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom to physically threaten the president. the first amendment also allows employers to fire employees who act like idiots. you’re confusing a bunch of things here.
thuggis - January 10, 2012
Anyone who thinks there's no exceptions to freedom of speech...
Should tell everyone on the next plane they’re boarding that there’s a bomb on it.
Zachary Kater - January 10, 2012
And that’s not even mentioning that stupid fallacy where people forget it only has to do with government intervention in the first place. Otherwise, everyone would tell their boss what a dick he is.
Zachary Kater - January 10, 2012
I see you're a Fitch fan
You’re a dick.
Cory Braiterman - January 10, 2012
I'm still in my grieving process, come on now.
Zachary Kater - January 10, 2012
freedom of speech?
he is free to say whatever he wants/chooses but that doesn’t mean he will stay employed. Hell, if I went up to my boss and called him a fucking cock sucker and got fired, I wouldn’t argue that I have freedom of speech and therefore can’t be fired.
keyboardwarrior - January 10, 2012
I assume that was a reply fail...
Since I said this up above…
Zachary Kater - January 10, 2012
it wasn’t a direct reply to you, just a reply to the conversation in general. I hate the people who think freedom of speech absolves them of all responsibility for the things that come out of their mouths.
keyboardwarrior - January 10, 2012
Ah, well carry on, then!
Zachary Kater - January 10, 2012
Oh sorry, i didn’t know expressing your opinion about a president and making terrorist accusations was the same thing.
MaximumWatermelon - January 11, 2012
Physically threaten the president...
Do you really think he was being serious? Do you seriously think he would actually try to attack Obama? If you do, please stay away from any type of satire, you may end up getting a stroke.
juanchoD - January 10, 2012
no, i don’t think he was serious, but i also think it doesn’t matter. it’s just like a bomb threat. it doesn’t matter if you were “joking.” and i’d say the same thing if it were Jeff Monson promising to slap a keylock on Bush. it’s just not acceptable in a democratic country to physically threaten elected officials, especially the president.
thuggis - January 10, 2012
It does matter
If a person says something that is ridiculous, it cannot be taken seriously, and thus there is no crime. The glassectomy thing is incredibly ridiculous, so I shouldn’t even need to elucidate on that. His comment saying someone “should knock some sense into that guy” is rhetorical speech, and should not be seen as an actual threat. His calling out the president to a fight in the UFC, is also ridiculous, and once again, I shouldn’t have to point out why.
A bomb threat is an entirely different story. There is nothing ridiculous of threatening to detonate a bomb in a plane. Especially given the fact that people have tried, and have succeeded in doing this.
I don’t agree with a political discussion in your post-fight interview. But it seems you don’t understand how the first amendment is truly used in these cases.
juanchoD - January 10, 2012
who said anything about a crime?
what has Volkmann been charged with?
Cory Braiterman - January 10, 2012
Look at what Thuggis said before me.
juanchoD - January 10, 2012
Last I checked
saying stupid shit generally isn’t a crime either, which is what thuggis was talking about. It’s just stupid, and often carries ramifications.
Cory Braiterman - January 10, 2012
By this logic, threatening the president should be taken just as seriously, because people have tried and succeeded in killing the previous presidents.
QED.
M.Sphinx - January 10, 2012
WOW

The word ridiculous. It has a meaning. Look it up then comment.

That is the criteria the courts use to determine whether or not a threat can be prosecuted.
True Threat:
taken from dictionary.reference.com.
Also, read this as it helps to illustrate further what a True Threat is.
http://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~eroberts/cs181/projects/nuremberg-files/legal.html
juanchoD - January 10, 2012
Okay…now where’s the part in the dictionary that says you can’t be suspended from your job for making ridiculous (threatening) comments on a sitting president?
If your job is waiter, I guess there is no problem. If your job is teaching children it might be inappropriate.
V C - January 10, 2012
You do know
that he can easily litigate that suspension right? Everything he said in that interview was protected speech. There were no fighting words, obscenities, etc. And there was never a “True Threat”.
juanchoD - January 12, 2012
Actually sometimes it is necessary to threaten public officials
Different story entirely.
discoandherpes - January 10, 2012
the secret service
has paid visits to grade schoolers who drew pictures of the president getting shot. They give zero fucks if you are kidding or not.
Cory Braiterman - January 10, 2012
A serious case can be made that the parents of the kids were trying to brainwash them into hating the president.
In which case the Secret Service had more than a right to pay a visit to them. As for the secret service paying a visit to Volkmann’s house, if they tried to prosecute him for what he said in the interview with Helwani. The case would be dismissed immediately.
juanchoD - January 10, 2012
...
Winner of the dumbest comment of 2012 so far. Congratulations, juanchoD
Cory Braiterman - January 10, 2012
Really?
If you think parents don’t brainwash their children, then I suggest you should go back to sleep and continue to live in your dreamland.
juanchoD - January 10, 2012
“Physically threatening” the president would be to grab him by the collar and tell him if he doesn’t do his job right you’ll bash his face in. Jacob Volkmann did not physically threaten the president at all.
MaximumWatermelon - January 11, 2012
Even then
Volkmann’s comments aren’t even close to constituting a true threat.
juanchoD - January 12, 2012
In order to post here
everyone should be forced to read, and truly understand, what the first amendment actually allows. Seems like this freedom of speech argument comes up all the time.

Nope, that's far from the truth.
As long as people act civilized they face no fear of being banned. I’m yet to even get a warning here in the 3 years I’ve been a member, and I’m kind of a dick at times.

I get it, he hates poor people……great, now I am talking politics on an MMA site.
theprodigy1981 - January 10, 2012
We can talk about how boring Volkmann is as a fighter instead.

Zachary Kater - January 10, 2012

V C - January 10, 2012
Despite the fact that he isn't a very exciting fighter
I actually am a fan of Volkmann the fighter…the guy who came in and lost his first UFC fight, battling through being dropped once or twice during the fight…the guy who turned around and took a super short notice fight against a dangerous guy and lived with starting his UFC career at 0-2.
The guy who then dropped down to LW and has done what he needed to do to put wins together and sort of earn some ‘Win security’ with the promotion.
He isn’t exciting, but I like that he has done what he needed to do to stay in the best organization out there.
I do not like the stupid, lets call them ‘jokes’ he makes about the president….it’s just annoying…and frankly, I don’t like stories about him being visited by the CIA or being put on administrative leave taking up space on MMA websites.

BE TOOK HIM OUT OF CONTEXT
(typical thing for his type to say even when you weren’t taken out of context)
Rob Young - January 10, 2012
The headline was misleading.
Shoulda been “Illegally Censored by His Government, Political Firebrand Jacob Volkmann’s Search for Freedom of Speech aided by Fox News Patriots”

You know Fox only reported on this cause Volkmann keeps the “Chirst” in Christmas. If his name was Jacob “Xmas” Volkmann we’d have never heard this story.

Can't expect much from a media outlet that can't even tell the difference between Sarah Palin and Tina Fey...
Zachary Kater - January 10, 2012
or an outlet that believes a Japanese dance club is an actual city with a nuclear reactor in it.
of course they’ll make it look like this ‘American Hero’ is being ostracized and being silenced by the big evil mega-liberal government. it’s what they want their cattle to believe.
Victor Rodriguez - January 10, 2012
Did you know Firefox, Microsoft, and Apple are search engines?
Zachary Kater - January 10, 2012

Victor Rodriguez - January 10, 2012

NickRingp4pGOAT - January 11, 2012
He didn't get arrested or charged with any crime, so noone should be crying about freedom of speech being called into question.
AwkwardwithwordmakingisGoldberg,huhJoe - January 10, 2012
Free speech isnt a ticket to say whatever the fuck you want without any repercussions. If you say something lots of people disagree with, those people will exercise their freedom of speech and call you out on your bullshit. If you arent prepared for that or dont like it, shut up.
ProfessorBLove - January 10, 2012
This isn't about politics
This isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue – it’s about parents not wanting a nut job asshole teaching their kids
