We're not to the point where the UFC 142 talk is ramping up (that starts tomorrow, and it's going to be good) so now is a good time to follow up on my story from the weekend about the PR battle between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. With Bob Arum having said that Manny vs. Floyd won't happen on May 5 because of a cut suffered by Pacquiao back in November things appeared to have died down until after Floyd served his 90 day sentence in jail starting in June.
But then Manny Pacquiao went ahead and threw Bob Arum under the bus a bit when talking to PhilBoxing:
"I‘ve said this over and over before and I'm saying this again, I want Floyd Mayweather Jr. to be my next opponent and I haven't changed my choice despite recent developments. ... I am meeting with my promoter, Bob Arum on Tuesday and I will insist that the fight with Mayweather be given the preference (over) the four others in the list [Miguel Cotto, Timothy Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez, Lamont Peterson] I will fight next."

"It's not really fair for some quarters to blame me if, in the long run, the fight wouldn't push through. As I have also been saying many times before, I fight for the fans. I want the fans to be happy always."
"Whoever the fans want me to fight, I will face him (in) the ring. I don't choose (who to) fight. It is my promoter who does because it's his job. My job is to fight, everybody must realize that."
Today Floyd hit up Twitter with a few gems to continue pushing for the fight:

This isn't the first time Floyd has stated publicly that he's ready for the fight either. He made it quite clear in a video released a few months back.
Of course, part of the reason for this could be the backlash to reports that Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero is in final negotiations. Fans hated hearing that Floyd (fighting at 147 pounds as a welterweight) would dare fight a guy who has never fought over lightweight (other than one horrible fight at 138) and never held a legitimate title above 130 pounds. To top it off, he has been off over a year after having surgery on his shoulder.
This could be a way to make it seem like "well, you guys. I tried my best, now I pretty much have to fight Guerrero" even though there are many better options out there. Which isn't to run down the very talented Guerrero, but rather to point out that he hasn't proven that he deserves the shot. Then again, maybe the public pressure will finally get to everyone involved.
It has to happen eventually...

they are lobbying against it because it would destroy their current business model. I think they could still make it work if they got included, but I don’t think it would be the rainbows everyone thinks it will be.

MMA does not want to end up like boxing
They should lobby against it. That act favors fighters but ultimately hurts the fans by fighters avoiding each other or promoters refusing to work with other promoters. This is why boxing is at such a bad state. MMA has blown up the way it has this past decade because they don’t have to meet 20 different promotions criteria. Whats next…..each division will have 100 champions?

I’ve talked about it in the past, Manny needs money ALREADY.

People that say this fight will NEVER happen obviously don’t know much about boxing. This fight will obviously happen at some point, the question is when. PAC is already exiting his prime and mayweather may be also, it’s hard to say with him bc he jas definitely slowed down with his foot work, reflexes and punch output from his younger days he is also fighting way bigger guys who fight in a different style thus changing his style. Until he gets beaten I cant really say he’s past it, same goes for manny I guess. Even though in my eyes marquez once again took him to school in there 3rd fight.

I would probably pick one of those really hairy caterpillars like this one which is called the Puss Caterpillar, and is the most poisonous caterpillar in the world. It’s hair is actually venomous spines. It’s not fatal if you touch it (just hurts like a bitch) but swallowing thousands of tiny venomous spines? No bueno.

The build up for this fight and all the ups and downs of the negotiations over the years has built such a high expectation and such a huge bubble of speculation that I think once the fight actually happens it will be one of the biggest let downs in sports history… epsecially for casual fans whom don’t get that these guys styles aren’t exactly the greatest to match up against each other… Definitely going to be a money make BUT at what long term expense to the sport and future PPVs…

147 is a specific weight class considered to be “moneyweight” in boxing due to Pacquiao and Mayweather being there, and a fight with either of them means a shitload of money.

Because it is mixed martial arts
Implying that it involves multiple styles, and since boxing is one of the styles most often used it makes sense you would cover one of the biggest stories. Same reason MMA sites should post stories about NCAA wrestling or grappling tournaments.
I imagine a decathlon site would also cover a story about someone breaking a record in the 100.

This will be the biggest fight of their lives. No other fight will ever sell as well or be given the promotion of this fight. Thus they will never make as much money fighting as they do in this fight. And the loser will never again be seen as the best in the world so that luster will be lost….
