It's not exactly a secret that the NFL is a ratings monster and with the playoffs in full swing there was always going to be some question as to the impact that a late playoff game on Saturday would have on the pay-per-view buys for UFC 142. Then Tim Tebow happened.
Denver was expected to be bounced from the playoffs in the first round by the Steelers only to pull off yet another improbable win, this time on an 80 yard touchdown pass by Tebow in overtime.
At this point, Tebow is a must-see national phenomenon, regardless of what side of the "is he actually any good?" debate you find yourself on.
See the ratings info from last week's game:
According to a tweet by league spokesman Greg Aiello, the overtime game won by the Broncos was the "most-watched Wild Card game ever w/42.4 million viewers, & most-watched TV program since Super Bowl XLV."
According to Boston.com, the game earned a 25.9 overnight Nielsen rating. (A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes).
Saturday night the Broncos face the New England Patriots at 8 p.m. in what is sure to be a game that draws incredible ratings.
While there is certainly a base of MMA fans who order nearly every UFC card, there is a large portion of the audience the promotion attempts to draw from that is simply the curious and bored looking for some excitement on a Saturday night. There will be almost none of that with a football game featuring a national sensation (Tebow), a proven constant title contender (Patriots) with incredible meaning (playoffs) going up against the pay-per-view.
A card headlined by a bout between Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo was never likely to do huge numbers. But will the combination of a main event with little mass audience appeal and a football game that goes beyond the sport actually contribute to a card that doesn't break the 200,000 buy mark on PPV?
I have a feeling the answer will be yes.

GOD, first pro wrestling and now THIS?
Bloody Elbow is ruined forever. Stop killing MMA, Brookhouse >:(
OTHER SPORTS DON’T EXIST, JUST MMA.

What is "sports" ?
Is that some kind of club for h_m_s?!

Pro wrestling isn't a sport

What about competitive cheerleading?

Oh, right: "sports entertainment."
Nevermind, then.
McKinley B. Noble - January 12, 2012
pro wrestling is a sport
that all we see nowadays are fictional matches by characters doesn’t change that fact.
it might be a dead sport or more likely at this point a fictional sport, but it still in its core a sport.

Would not any competitive sport, by definition, have the outcome not pre-determined?
/calls sports bookie…“I want to put 10K on Harlem to win and cover…”
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
Competitive sports, sure… but we’re talking about “sport” here.
Shnak - January 12, 2012
True, good point
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
Is there a requirement for competitiveness to be considered a sport? Hunting and fishing are generally considered sports, and they usually don’t have competitive aspects to them.

I agree

Not competitive? Go to a deer camp post-hunt and tell me that.

Zachary Kater - January 12, 2012
There are… but not always. Fishing can be competitive, of course, but it can also be just to relax. In both cases, it’s still a sport.

It is a sport
if someone is physically trying to prevent you from acheiving your goal (note, actual physical contact is not required).
Everything else is a competition.
Sports: Baseball, basketball, football, soccer, MMA, wrestling, polo, waterpolo, rugby, NASCAR, vollyball, jai ali, boxing, tennis, etc….
Competitons: gymnastics, track and field events, synchronized swimming, swimming, ice skating, skiing, snowboarding etc…..

Actually, I said that because I am a fan of other sports.
I can’t enjoy sports talk radio or TV any more because Tim Tebow is shoved down my throat EVERY DAY. I love the NFL and divisional playoff weekend is the best weekend of the season but you wouldn’t know there were three other games going on because Tebow is basically the only topic of conversation. He is not a good QB, he’s not the only role model in the league, and he’s damn sure not the only Christian in the league. He’s a story because every major media outlet made him one. I love BE and Brent’s actually one of my favorite staffers but I did not feel like seeing this today. If I was an asshole look to start up some stuff, I would say he was just looking for hits, which I am not implying. As I type this, Sportscenter is having an hour of programming dedicated to Tim Tebow. That’s ridiculous and sad. My post was out of frustration and I know I’m not the only one.
Rahson - January 12, 2012

The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
As with most folks when it comes to this mess, I can’t tell if you’re serious.
Rahson - January 12, 2012
A little of both
I’m definitely a bit tired of hearing about it so much, but I will tune in to see it.
I really, really, really hope they find a way to win, but my reasons differ from most – I want my Texans to play at home next round after spanking Baltimore, and that is the only way it happens.
Mediocre QB at best, near-elite football player, all things considered…sure, he looks like he is unleashing a slider with that wind-up, but…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
Okay cool.
Since I don’t have a team per se, there are certain teams I kind of root for at different times. Texans are one of them this year. What they’ve done with the injuries they’ve had this season is flat out amazing.
As for Tebow, I have NOTHING against him has a person. I actually respect what he does. The mania, hype, and fawning is what I can’t take. And I’m not a big media conspiracy person but the way they’ve been forcing the narrative (ESPECIALLY ESPN which I probably watch too much of) gets on my nerves. Hell, it was bad when he was at Florida. I swear Verne Lundquist was getting off in the booth while commentating some of his games.
Rahson - January 12, 2012
It has certainly wrecked ESPN radio, that's for sure...
I admit, it is a great story, and anything that brings out both sides of the extremists on almost any issue is fun for me…

The funny thing is, if weren’t told everyday we had to stop what we were doing and admire his 45th nose hair on the back row, he’d have even more fans than he has now. We’re being told he’s great while Brees, Rodgers, and Brady are showing EVERY WEEK what greatness is.

Only 225K ordered UFC 136
And that had the Edgar-Maynard rematch along with Aldo fighting a much more well known name in Kenny Florian. Then the fact that it’s only two weeks after a Lesnar fight, and it’s in Brazil, where even Anderson Silva took a massive dip in buys against a lesser name opponent, and 175K might be a generous estimate.

Danger Dan - January 12, 2012
Well the best news is with a so so championship match and the almighty Tebow on TV, we’ll get a true count of “hardcore” fans that we can refer to throughout the year…
I say right around 200,000 will watch even Aldo over football.
Chris Sarda - January 12, 2012
Not really
I consider myself a hardcore fan but not to the point where I’m going to sit in my house alone and watch a so so card while everyone I know is out watching the football game. I think that’s gonna be a big problem…for people who are used to watching fights with other people or in bars, it’s gonna be a major issue finding others to go with
MemphisMike - January 12, 2012
Youre a hardcore fan but you can only watch fights with other people?

They beat the piss out of Denver the first time they played and I wouldn’t be surprised if they jump ahead of them early and run away with it.

Denver began that game in complete control but gave it away
with those back to back fumbles. This one could go down to the wire if they play turnover free football

RashadsLeftNipple - January 12, 2012
Great, another excuse all ready to be used to explain why Aldo/Mendes won’t draw flies this weekend. It can’t just be because nobody cares about the lighter weight classes? Oh, and Aldo better bring back his WEC version of himself or else he’ll quickly be headlining TUF finale cards…
Shnak - January 12, 2012
Because nobody cares about lighter weight classes in combat sports.
Oh wait…
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012

discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
147 isn’t a lighter weight. Welterweight is one of the most storied divisions in combat sports history, home of The Sugar Rays and the current biggest stars in boxing. Just as WW isn’t considered a lighter wright on the UFC. I’m speaking of 145 and lower in the UFC and 130 and lower in boxing. The evidence thSt no one cares about these divisions is overwhelming.
Hutchy - January 12, 2012 via mobile
That makes no sense. Featherweight is MMA’s equivalent to welterweight whether you like it or not.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
No it’s nOt. Featherweight is the equivalent of the UFC s featherweight. Let me ask u sOmething: if u polled any random hooters crowd on how much mike brown weighs, how many could give an accurate answer? ur making a typical hardcore fan mistake: thinking everyone knows as much as u do. 147, 170, these numbers mean jack shit to 70% of fans. The WW championship of the world? Different story
Hutchy - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Ask a random person what title Pac or May holds.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
That's incredibly silly
Whether you call 147 welterweight, featherweight, flyweight or cruiserweight it’s still 147 lbs.
And while boxing’s 147 lb division has been around for decades, it was just instituted in the UFC what? like a year ago? Of course it’s not going to be exploding in popularity. Give it a few years and a chance to develop as a division. The same thing was said about 155 10 years ago.
Genki Sudo's Choreographer - January 12, 2012
I meant UFC, and you know it.
Shnak - January 12, 2012
So the only conclusion that I can come to is that MMA fans aren't as intelligent as boxing fans
For wanting to watch really bad heavyweight fights.
I guess there is no accounting for taste, considering welterweight and lightweight are the most exciting and stacked divisions in MMA.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
I think it’s the KO rates more than the weight class:
Lightweight
22.8%
Welterweight
34.5%
Middleweight
37.7%
Light Heavyweight
41.9%
Heavyweight
60.5%
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
During most heavyweight fights
The KO is more like a mercy killing than a crowd pleaser.
And of course Lightweights are going to finish less. They are consistently fighting better competition.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
I agree, but people like blood.
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
Meh, watching 125, 135, 145 guys is like watching 12 year old kids fighting… something’s just odd about it. Just like WMMA, but that’s another subject altogether. It’s still MMA, and I’ll still watch it because of that, but I clearly prefer 155 and over.
Shnak - January 12, 2012
I don't get were your coming from
Most guys at 145 are average to normal heights. George Roop and Hatsu Hioki are tall enough to be point guards in the NBA. Cruz is around the average height for a male, while the other guys at 135 and 125 are just people on the shorter end of the spectrum.
But whatever floats your boat. I don’t care if no one ordered Maynard/Edgar III, because at the end of the day it was an amazing card. If they would rather watch heavyweight MMA, there’s not accounting for taste I guess.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
These lighter guys are either tall and skinny (skin and bones skinny) or shorter than average. Either way, there’s just something odd to watching them fight, less impressive. There’s just something about watching a big guy fall to the floor after being KO’d. That’s impressive. Watching stickmen fight isn’t.
Shnak - January 12, 2012
Skinny or in shape?
Cause there is a difference.
Sure Struve falling to the floor in epic fashion is impressive, but watching heavyweight MMA historically is awful. Like I said before, the big KO is more like a mercy killing a majority of the time.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
It can't because that's wrong.
Akemi Homura - January 12, 2012
Why is Tebow a national sensation? Like… whats the deal?
Our Bovine Public - January 12, 2012
You either love him or you hate him
You think hes going to be a great QB or the worst ever. There is no in between on him, the most polarizing guy to hit sports in a while
19Miles - January 12, 2012
He can be an average QB and still be considered a failure. The hype and expectations are insanely high for him
IRodC - January 12, 2012
He's playing at a level right now where you can argue both ways
From a terrible game at the Chiefs to a spectacular game at Pittsburgh
19Miles - January 12, 2012
I wouldn't call that Pitt game spectacular
I believe he’s the first QB in a decade to complete 10 or less passes and win a playoff game. That and Pitt played him so incredibly awful that they kept giving up the long ball to the left side of the offense (the one type of pass he IS good at) that they really deserved to lose due to their poor scheming.
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
When those ten passes go for 316 yards
and an upset win I’d say its pretty damn good
19Miles - January 12, 2012
I look at the way defenses that weren't hobbled played him
They didn’t have Clark, Keisel and someone else who’s name escapes me. Hampton? There’s a lot of reasons why Denver won last weekend and Tebow making the passes that mattered are certainly part of it. I think a huge share of the reason goes to Pitt’s defense as well as their injuries
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
Clark being out was huge, but if you’re going to run man to man then PUT A SAFTEY BACK.
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
Every time but once they ran that set with a receiver in motion it was a run, and the safety cheated up toward the line before realizing way too late that it was a pass…the CB gave him a clean release and was clearly expecting inside help even if there wasn’t any help over the top.
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
Injuries are hurting every team by this time of year
Packers made their run with over 10 guys on the IR
19Miles - January 12, 2012
Just like MMA last year! Injuries! They’re killing fan interest in the NFL!
( . Y . ) - January 12, 2012
The difference is that they were all backups or people hurt earlier in the year
Allowing the new guys to get playing time. There wasn’t a single one like Clark or Mendenhall who played all year and were suddenly unavailable. Rodgers wasn’t hurt, Roethlesberger was. Grant played one game in 2010. Barnett played in 4, same with Burnett. Finley was gone in week 5. Keisel and Hampton (?) were injured during the game.
Huge difference
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
Doesnt change the fact that injuries had effected them
as they do every team by this time of year. Were you unlucky to get your starting rb and qb injured? Yeah but you cant discount from Tebow because you had guys hurt. Bookies knew the injury report and the steelers were still a touchdown favorite
19Miles - January 12, 2012
Because they were a better team
Still are despite the loss. Are you purposely ignoring the two dudes they lost in the game? Or the terrible way they gameplanned against Tebow all game?
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
Broncos lost their best receiver of the season during the game also
Not to mention Dawkins was sitting out. Like I said injuries happen to everybody. Crying about injuries after you lose a game you were supposed to win anyway isnt fair to the team that beat you fair and square. Excuses are like assholes…
19Miles - January 12, 2012
And yes your gameplan sucked because you guys didnt
think he could hit a deep ball
19Miles - January 12, 2012
I'm not a Pittsburgh fan
So don’t lump “me” in this. “My” team is playing fantastic ball and looks great on both sides of the ball with a real quarterback.
Denver is a decent team hamstrung by bad quarterback play all year. They’d have ran away with that awful division instead of losing the last 3 in a row and still winning it if they had Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Stafford, etc. etc. etc. Hell, give them Flacco, Newton, Dalton or a healthy Cutler or Roethlesberger and they win at least 2 or 3 more games this year.
Pitt went into that game with a gameplan that ignored the few passing strengths that Tebow has – passes well to the left and throws a decent deep ball. They lost due to that, and a huge number of injuries to a ton of players that left them playing backups with little to no preparation time.
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012

Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
The only team that fits that 24-2 criteria is the Giants,
but they have a -6 scoring differential, so that can’t be who you are talking about…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
ask Romo, Sanchez and Ryan how the Giants D is these days
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
In all seriousness,
they seem to be coming together at the right time. Eli might be the best Manning QB when it counts the most, and JPP and Cruz are turning into elite players…
Like us, y’all are kind of flying under the radar a bit…of course, Eli>>>TJ…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
Oddly enough,
the Texans, with rook TJ would likely fare better against the Packers or especially the Patriots than against Baltimore, SF or perhaps your NYG and the Saints because of the defensive deficiencies…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
They lost that game because they were outplayed by the Denver Broncos
The best team won the game
19Miles - January 12, 2012
negative
Fortunately, this is sports, so being the better team doesn’t actually mean a hill of beans.
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
Did you consider the patriots the best team even after they lost to the Giants in the SB?
19Miles - January 12, 2012
one of them, certainly
I’ll still chant 18-1 at pat’s fans tho. That team was ridiculously good.
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
One of the five best football teams ever assembled.
Worldisart - January 12, 2012
They are an all-time great team
but they were the second best team of 2007 due to losing the big game
19Miles - January 12, 2012
If you're arguing that the 2007 Giants were the greatest team in history
I’m ok with that
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
Not quite
but I think you know what I mean
19Miles - January 12, 2012
Pittsburg is getting old too,
always going to have more injuries in that case…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
True...look at the Texans...
Losing so many of their best players for extended periods. Missed Foster for the first 3 games, Mario and Andre for at least 9 each, Schaub, Leinart, Manning for a month or so…
JJ, Cush, Meyers and Duane are the only top guys not to miss extended time it seems…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
At some point, there has to be a reason why team after team brainlocks when playing them, it’s not possible that it’s ALL coincidence…..could it be…..Jesus?!?!?
Hutchy - January 12, 2012 via mobile
so Kyle Orton and the Chefs
are immune to jeebus? And Buffalo? Detroit?
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
Thank you.
Pittsburgh went in there cocky and looked like ass. I love how Tebowphiles forget to mention the three previous games before that one.
Rahson - January 12, 2012
Because
those games were meaningless
MemphisMike - January 12, 2012
Like hell they were. If Denver lost to Pittsburgh, Tebow was done as a starter. And KC was a division game.
Rahson - January 12, 2012
Yea, no kidding
If you think that Orton didn’t want to go into Denver and pull out a win, I dunno what delusions to feed ya
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
I shouldn't have said meaningless
But in retrospect they did not have any affect on much. If Oakland had pulled out the division those games would be all people are talking about. But they won the division and Tebow remained the starter, so no harm no foul.
MemphisMike - January 12, 2012
Still hard to believe that LeBeau of all people
didn’t plan it better initially or adjust more quickly…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
Because he's the answer to that terrible "what if Michael Vick was white" article that ESPN pooped out a while ago
Except nobody realizes it, so they’re all racist.
menckenstein - January 12, 2012
Oh my Tebow, I just mobile rec'd the shit out this bitch.
Rob Young - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Jesus helps him win.
Apparently, Christ taught Tebow one hell of a 40-yard dash.
McKinley B. Noble - January 12, 2012
Because the media tells us he is. Every. Day.
Rahson - January 12, 2012
here’s the deal.
it’s pretty damn funny.
Victor Rodriguez - January 12, 2012
I'm predicting 200 to 250...
…comments in the live thread during the PPV that mention Tebow in some way.
( . Y . ) - January 12, 2012
Football bores me to no end
It seems every year, there are more and more commerical breaks. Its feeling far to coorporate for me to care about anymore.
I’ll definatly be watching the PPV. MMA > Football in my mind.
All the good parts of the game will be shown on the highlights for the next few days anyways.
But I agree, football is going to hurt the PPV no matter what. And I think it would hurt it without Tebow.
Clay Davis - January 12, 2012
Here here
A coach of mine one year sat with a stopwatch during the super bowl and started the timer every time the ball was in play. In an entire game there was 12 minutes of actual game being played. I simply can’t sit through a game anymore.
ChillMike - January 12, 2012
no doubt the game on saturday will hurt ufc's ppv
come on, the ufc cannot compete with a major sporting event such as playoff nfl
daftshadow - January 12, 2012
Yes it will hurt them. in the US, football>UFC by a mile
that being said, I live in canada so I’ll be watching the UFC lol

Marquis Brown - January 12, 2012
a better question is
what DOESN’T porn rescue?
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012

Marquis Brown - January 12, 2012

menckenstein - January 12, 2012

The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
Damn it, is there no escape to this madness!?
I get enough of Tebow for twenty minutes every time I watch Sportscenter. He’s a good story and all, but when he’s invading my MMA it’s gone too far.
Please Tom Brady, end this nightmare.
Marquis Brown - January 12, 2012
Yea I can't recall the last time I was rooting for New England
However, I wouldn’t be too upset if Tebow trolls Brady and Billicheat for a win
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
Oh, I'd love for Tebow to win.
Like I already said, he makes for a great story. The only reason Tebow gets hate, other than he’s a shitty quarterback – which makes the good story because he wins, is because the media gives him far too much coverage.
I mean, it’s a shame when this game gets more coverage when the Patriots already beat them by 30+ points than a game between the Super Bowl champions the past two seasons, with their previous meeting coming down to four points and being decided in the final minute.
Marquis Brown - January 12, 2012
30+ points? When did that happen
They lost by 18 in a game that was a lot closer in reality than the score leads one to believe because of the turnovers.
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
Elway sucked as a young QB, but he was a winner whose team believed in him. After Tebow’s 80 yard bomb to beat the Steelers and his other late game wins this year, he’s going to get a lot of the same belief.
( . Y . ) - January 12, 2012
You mean the 30 yard pass that the receiver took the rest of the way
after a fantastic stiff arm? yea.
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
All set up by yet another perfect toss by my man Tebow!
( . Y . ) - January 12, 2012
You even comparing him to Elway is why people hate him.
Rahson - January 12, 2012
Okay, I didn’t realize I had such power. I’ll try to cut back so people will love him.
( . Y . ) - January 12, 2012
While you’re at it, work harder at being funny.
Rahson - January 12, 2012
I’m the Tebow of humor.
( . Y . ) - January 12, 2012
I lol'ed
Dannie Ray - January 12, 2012
See, Rahson? Plenty of room on the Tebow / ( . Y . ) train. Feel free to hop on board. Dannie Ray is on board. Good man.
( . Y . ) - January 12, 2012
That was good. I’m not hopping on board but that was good.
Rahson - January 12, 2012
"He's a winner"
….And so were Craig Krenzel and Greg McIlroy, what is the meaning of this term?
SSreporters - January 12, 2012
I get so sick of hearing that.
Rahson - January 12, 2012
Elway
has to be the most over-rated of the HoF QBs…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
I’m a hardcore and although I’ll order 142 I’ll probably watch the Bronco’s game live.
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
Why was Jarret Lee not put in the game?
19Miles - January 12, 2012
The Saints game. I know it’s gonna be great right. Can’t wait!
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
thats right
just pretend it never happened.
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
I have no clue what you’re talking about Baiterman.
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
mhmmmmmmmmm
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
haha
merryprankster - January 12, 2012
Thats an upset just waiting to happen.
That field will be muddy and slick which will slow the saints down to the type of game that the 49ers like to play
19Miles - January 12, 2012
It’ll be a good game. The line should be a little closer.
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
If it was in the Superdome yall would run away with it
but it will be close with the Saints traveling to the west coast and the bad field
19Miles - January 12, 2012
No doubt. I’m pulling hard for the Giants this weekend.
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
I can definitely understand why
19Miles - January 12, 2012
Only way that happens is if they pull a Bull Durham-esque rain-out with the sprinklers…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
I bet that field has been overwatered all week leading up to the game
19Miles - January 12, 2012
I wonder what the rules are about that, any idea?
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
Not a clue
But its home field advantage, as long as the field is playable i think its within the rules
19Miles - January 12, 2012
Are they overwatering the field?
They haven’t had rain in northern california in 2 months
I know candlestick has a shitty surface, but it should be pretty good on saturday

His craptastic numbers against Alabama
MattParker117 - January 12, 2012
They weren't as craptastic as Jeffersons numbers in 2nd game
19Miles - January 12, 2012
Another factor that could bring the numbers down – the 30,000 that registered to watch UFC 141 free on Xbox Live will get this card for free after they failed to have it working for the last event.
Jamie Penick - January 12, 2012
Shit, that's a good point.
Aldo/Mendes card isn’t getting a fair shake being put up against football AND free PPV viewing.

Actually I hope that the Giants beat the Packers and the Patriots whip up on the Broncos
Super Bowl XLI is probably the greatest football game I’ve ever watched (of course I’m bias because I’m a Giants fan).
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
Lightweights aren't compelling entertainment...
sorry, there’s no way to sugarcoat it. Tebow is a nice try for an excuse though.
Kid Kimura - January 12, 2012
The WEC
Had the most consistent entertainment value of just about any organization in the history of the sport during its final run.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
… and nobody watched it, and Zuffa finally decided to pull the plug on it after years of losing money, or not making enough to their liking.
Shnak - January 12, 2012
It was also on Versus
Dude, Versus.
It’s not like I even care if people watched the WEC or not. It was still probably the most exciting promotion ever, so as long as I enjoyed it I really could give less of a shit.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
I enjoyed WEC too… but I prefer most UFC shows than those WEC put on.
Shnak - January 12, 2012
What’s crazy is that WEC 48 actually might have a chance to beat UFC 142’s buyrate.
Machiel Van - January 12, 2012
It will.
SSreporters - January 12, 2012
WEC Aldo > UFC Aldo. Also, Urijah Faber was fighting at WEC 48.
Shnak - January 12, 2012
But what about the supposed strength of the UFC brand?
Machiel Van - January 12, 2012
It’s only true to a certain extent… the UFC could bring back Khalib Starnes and headline a card with him versus Leites and it’d sell 200k because it’s still a UFC event… but to sell better, it needs big name guys people want to watch. Aldo isn’t that guy so far, mostly because he hasn’t impressed anyone with his performances in the UFC so far, and also because he’s Brazilian and doesn’t speak a single word of english.
Shnak - January 12, 2012
Just because it had low ratings doesn’t mean it wasn’t thoroughly entertaining
Chronic - January 12, 2012
Speak for yourself
I wait for the Nielsen numbers or Meltzer PPV estimates before I can gauge how entertaining it is. Kimbo/Thompson was the Fight Of The Forever.
Rob Young - January 12, 2012
Lol.
Velasquez vs Dos Santos was the most epic battle of all time!!
Machiel Van - January 12, 2012
Yeah, but this is the UFC, which has consistently put on awful and unexciting LW fights
Like Guida-Huerta, Edgar-Maynard II and III, Guida- Henderson, Penn-Stevenson, Penn-Sherk, Guida-Griffin, Diaz-Cerrone, Lauzon-Ruediger, Njokuani-Barboza, Njokuani-Horodecki, and so many others… Just dogs, all of them, and boring all the time. I won’t even go into how insanely boring lightweights are outside of the UFC, but just look at Alvarez-Chandler for how they are worse than paint drying!
Enmascarado - January 12, 2012
Edgar-Griffin, Huerta-Garcia, and Guida-Sanchez also sucked.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012

Dannie Ray - January 12, 2012
i'll be surprised if this card sells over 250,000 PPV buys
UFC 134 was a much better card, but because the card was held outside of north America it only sold for 335,000 buys.
This card is just a perfect storm of low PPV numbers.
1) Card is headlined by unknown Jose Aldo fighting unknown Chad Mendes
2) the Card is being held outside the US and Canada which historically has meant fewer PPV buys
3) the card is going up against Tebow and the NFL playoffs
darkotto23 - January 12, 2012
I’ll be surprised if it’s even over 200,000.
Machiel Van - January 12, 2012
Lets Tebowfukers!
( . Y . ) - January 12, 2012
It was going to do poor anyways...
I think where it will hurt it is the bars that show it. One thing I think people underate UFC buys are the casual fans that might be out at a bar for another reason and the UFC is dominating the TVs. However, I think there is going to be people coming to watch the NFL game dominating the bars and the UFC, especially one with low casual interest, will be relegated to fewer TVs.
ChicagoMMAFan - January 12, 2012
Something's amiss
There appears to be talk of Football on my favorite MMA website.
This event was ALWAYS going to have a crappy buyrate. It’s a foreign card, which does worse, it’s headlined by the 145 title, which does worse, and it’s a card sandwiched between two really great PPVs, those do worse.
Chris Groves - January 12, 2012
This is going to hurt my hardcore cred (to the extent that I had any)
but I’m watching football. That Steelers-Broncos game was absolutely bonkers, and this card is not exactly turning me on at a $60 price point. The fact that I had a less than stellar outing at the craps tables in Vegas this past week is icing on the cake. Free sports it is. Good luck my Cecil Peoples Champs brethren.
Dave Strummer - January 12, 2012
uh
you can watch the UFC for free ya know
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
I loathe bars
and I’ve never been one for streams. If I’m watching a UFC PPV, I’m paying for it, sadly.
Dave Strummer - January 12, 2012
What are the odds
any of the normal bars are going to have the UFC on instead of the game?
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
I’m thinking that the closet bar that’ll be playing UFC 142 will be somewhere in Canada.
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
I think you are right
They still calling for Les’ head down there? That Hebert presser “question” still cracks me up…and he has a kid on the team! “Do you have a question?”
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
What? My fanpost? I’m glad you liked it.
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012

The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
I know what you meant. Let’s just say today was the first day that I’ve been able to hold down a meal since that night.
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
I kind of hope this lives on in infamy
Like I can yell WIDE RIGHT around Bills fans and they involuntary twitch and look like they just got punched in the gut.
I will test this theory in a few weeks by yelling JARRET LEE to the nearest LSU fan
Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
Try 'JEFFERSON'
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
You don’t have to do that. My face has a permanent cringe on it now. I used to be such a happy person…
DayGeaux - January 12, 2012
The utter depths of the love/hate, despise/covet relationship LSU fans have with Saban is going to lead to a new disorder being added to the DSM…
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
This card was doomed from the get go there’s really not many names on this card that people will reconize besides vitor. I ll be watching this over football but I don’t even think this card gets over 175 mark

Cory Braiterman - January 12, 2012
Golf? Sport?
Matthew Roth - January 12, 2012
Nothing. Am I'm being real.
The media has chosen him and the rest of us suffer. Some will tell you it’s his character. They’re are plenty of high character guys in the league. Some will tell you it’s his faith. There are many faithful in the league. And when it comes to his QB skills? No. Just no. His team actually went on a VERY flukey run of six consecutive wins and made into the playoffs and he received entirely too much credit for it. If you stumble across any one that doesn’t like him, they actually probably are just tired of his over-coverage, which is severe.
Rahson - January 12, 2012

What's with the featherweight hate?
My friends and I all prefer the lighter weight classes. Much more exciting fights. Lots of action. The most stacked division (LW) and lots of stuff going on with the new FW BW and FlyW divisions.
The only insight I’ve seen was when I was watching 137 at my uncle’s house, and one of his friends came to watch. The guy was drunk and loud, and kept alternating between telling the fighters on the TV how they SHOULD be punching, and saying “I COULD KICK BOTH THEIR ASSES THEY’RE SO TINY!” Does a good fight no longer qualify as a good fight if you weigh more than the people fighting?
thirdparty - January 12, 2012
Your uncle's friend should tell that to the guy who got his ass kicked by Roger Huerta...
The American Ronin - January 12, 2012
You don’t understand. This guy had “BEEN IN LOTS OF BAR FIGHTS!” as near as I could tell, it was just one where he got his ass kicked by a bunch of guys, but he just kept telling the same story all night (and tweaking details along the way) so it was kind of confusing.

I’ll be watching the game, the fights, and the Red Bull Crashed event (hosted here in St. Paul) at either a) a bar or b) a friend’s house. The beauty is most people that order PPVs also have DVRs which would allow them to order the PPV, record the beginning while watching the game. That’s what I’d do.

I do the same thing dvr's fucking rule!

It will definitely have an effect.
Actually I need to make sure the place I’m planning on going is showing the UFC over the Denver Tebows game…

Psychic Prediction
170k PPV buys.
After being shocked at how poorly 136 did (which was a card I gladly purchased)
This card is gonna bomb. If if NFL playoffs wern’t on, and Tebow never existed it would still do worse than 136.
It’s a fact that the bulk of PPV buyers buy based on name value. Most probably barely know who Aldo is and haven’t the faintest clue who Mendes is.
I won’t be buying this one because there’s no way I’ll be able to convince my friends (esp the casual fans) to chip in for this card.

Also people have to stop bitching about how no one cares about FW and BW
When they’re buried on the prelims. Of course no one is going to care, only the hardcores stream facebook fights and such.

I don't even care about nfl
I only watch the superbowl, and its usually just backround noise to me, but I’ll watch this game just to see what Tebow is all about cause I’ve only seen highlights.
Should be a good saturday. Leafs vs Rangers at 7, interesting nfl game at 8 and ufc at 10

yeah... i'll be watching free football
dbcb - January 12, 2012
You have fun with that!
And while everyone watching football salivates over the few hard tackles made every few minutes, i’ll be watching a sport that cuts out the middle man and just focuses on the violence, which is really the only part which is really exciting
ElliotMatheny - January 12, 2012
I’ll watch the game until the fights come on. Looking forward to both and plan on watching both.

The game will hurt some but
The biggest two things that will hurt this PPV is a lack luster card and the UFC over saturating the market with this being the 3rd PPV in 35 days. I don’t plan on watching this because I’m not very interested in the card and I am just outright burned out on the UFC right now. I will see the Dana White and the UFC Feb. 4th.

I only like Combat sports, no NFL for me.
