The UFC 136 featherweight title fight could be the last time that fight fans see Kenny Florian as an active competitor. After an unsuccessful attempt at the featherweight title, Florian had plans to return to lightweight to close out his career. He was taking six months off to put the weight and muscle back on his frame when he suffered a herniated disk in the lumbar region of his back.
Florian spoke with the Boston Herald to address the issues he's currently dealing with and if he'll be able to return to fighting:
"It's possible, unfortunately," Florian said of his career ending. "I've kind of been going back-and-forth with some of the doctors, so it's possible. I'm going to see. As of right now, obviously I can't compete and train like I was at all. I'm just kind of doing what I can and hoping that things heal up and get better. I'm just kind of in a holding pattern. That's why I decided to do this commentary for the time being and take this next six months to really heal up and try to make some money on the side. It sucks. The last couple of months I've just been figuring out what's going on and what I'm going to do."
....
"It's not good," Florian said. "That's why I'm trying to stay hopeful. We'll see. I've been out here in (Los Angeles) doing this show every week for ‘UFC Tonight' for Fuel TV and doing some other things. I'm just hoping that it can heal up and get better and then see if I can go back to doing what I was doing. So far, I still need to rest. If I go to do something physical, I'm just not able to do it. That pain is coming back."
When I had the opportunity to speak with Florian while at Head Kick Legend, a big question for me was what he would do when he finally retired from MMA. He's become an on-air analyst for Zuffa with both the UFC and WEC and settled into the role of lead analyst with MMA Live. He also runs a successful gym in Massachusetts with his brother Keith, so the man does have options. It's just a shame that he may need to walk away not on his own terms.
If UFC 136 was truly Florian's last bout, how will be be remembered?
More after the jump...

Florian can be remembered many different ways. An unlikely finalist from The Ultimate Fighter. The man who failed in every attempt to capture gold. The man who said "I FINISH FIGHTS!". Or he can be remembered as the first UFC fighter to find success in three different weight classes.
He was a victim of his time period, a guy too small for welterweight when nothing else existed. He defeated some of the best lightweights in the sport's history and failed against others. His story can either be one of tragedy or triumph depending on the spin.
I can say that when the book is closed on Florian's MMA career I'll remember him as the guy who was the most unlikely UFC fighter to ever find success in the organization. His failures in championship bouts aside, he's one of the best to ever step foot in the octagon and one of the best to ever sit in the booth. I hope to speak with him in the upcoming days to find out how he's doing and to tell him thank you for the great career. He deserves it.

"...and settled into the role of lead analyst with MMA Live."
What is ESPN doing with that show? It only airs in short 6 minute segments online now. They might as well scrap it altogether.
Machiel Van - January 12, 2012
Well since Torres had that little thing
And Anik is with the UFC there’s no way they keep that show running.
SSreporters - January 12, 2012
Florian should be remembered as a great fighter who, while not able to win a championship, embodied all the best things about MMA. Some people will point out his three title losses as evidence he was a “choker” or that he just wasn’t all that great, but those people are wrong.
Machiel Van - January 12, 2012
But the thing is he was a choker. One of the biggest chokers of all time.
SLIP15 - January 12, 2012
Kenny's big losses were all to great fighters
Dropping championship/contender bouts to Penn, Maynard, Aldo and Sherk doesn’t make Kenny a choker. He’s a guy with not a ton of natural talent who nevertheless rose nearly to the top of multiple divisions. The fact that he came up just short says more about the amazing quality of his opponents than any deficiency that Florian had.
MS_Dos_Santos - January 12, 2012
He was the MMA version of the 90s Buffalo Bills
Rob Young - January 12, 2012
As a fan of the Buffalo Bills who is still pained by the memories of those loses, I rec you for accuracy but would have you know that I will now weep while eating mayonnaise from the jar with a spoon to deal with the trauma.

You should prolly reevaluate your grieving process.

Nah.
I’m a counselor and a Steelers fan. That seems legit.
gzl5000 - January 12, 2012
Ouch, a Steelers fan too… Tebow bless you.
Rob Young - January 12, 2012
If I were a Bills fan and I heard you bitch about being a Steelers fan I’d spit on you.
Derek Suboticki - January 12, 2012
well put
jthin - January 12, 2012
I'm talking about the present moment.
gzl5000 - January 13, 2012
At the present moment you can probably put on one of those obnoxious “Sixburgh” shirts you have in your closet. They cannot.
Derek Suboticki - January 13, 2012
oh my god perfect.
Body Triangle - January 13, 2012
It isn't a choke
if the guy is better than you. Florian is a great fighter but just not championship caliber. It sucks that it could all end with a training injury
Got nothing respect for Florian, and he is going to make a hell of a coach and broadcaster.
T.P. Grant - January 12, 2012
I strongly disagree
No one expected Florian to be great. After he lost to Sanchez he was a one dimensional, 2-2 fighter. He is actually a career overachiever. Despite his limited athleticism he dedicated himself to being a technical fighter and was able to beat people on pure technique alone.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
Who did Kenny defeat that was one of the best lightweights in history? Are we counting Gomi?
Earl Montclair - January 12, 2012
Clay Guida, duh
Rob Young - January 12, 2012
I figured Dokonjonosuke Mishima
Earl Montclair - January 12, 2012
Kit Cope. Of course
Bill P. - January 12, 2012
Sam Stout in '06 I guess

At least there's one less fighter in the UFC with a redundant nickname
It looks like a replacement has already appeared though in Alistair “The Reem” Overeem
Rob Young - January 12, 2012
I must say
J-Lau is not half bad
halitosis - January 12, 2012 via mobile
those kinds of nicknames are fine on their own
just not when they’re bookended by your full first and last name when Bruce Buffer introduces you.
Rob Young - January 12, 2012
If this is the end for Kenny, it really only means one thing to me.......NO MORE SCREAMIN' KEITH FLORIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Earl Montclair - January 12, 2012
The Human Vuvuzuela
Tonley - January 13, 2012
thats too bad
Ill always remember him though
merryprankster - January 12, 2012 via mobile
I think he’ll go down as one of the best fighters never to win a major title. And even at that, you can always say KenFlo put on good scraps.
Worldisart - January 12, 2012
Shame.
I always liked Kenny Florian. Entertaining fighter, unathletic enough that i could relate to him, and most importantly a guy who went against lots of stereotypes about MMA. Hopefully this isn’t it for him.
Magaca - January 12, 2012
Old injury getting worse
This is not a new a injury for Kenny. Those of us that have trained up in the NorthEast have known about Kenny’s back issues for a long time. Unfortunately, it seems like it’s finally caught up with Kenny.
AngryTwinkie - January 12, 2012
So this latest injury is just the straw that broke the camel’s back?
mburtoni - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Perhaps... I think it's the sport + age
All high level competitive athletes go through it. Kenny’s 35. It’s a tough sport and tough sports will always catch up with you at the highest levels of the game.
AngryTwinkie - January 12, 2012
Kenny should be remembered as a really consistent B+/A- fighter. Anyone at his level or below, he beat, and usually beat soundly. True A-level fighters beat him soundly.
Verklemptomaniac - January 12, 2012
The guy just can't catch a break
SSreporters - January 12, 2012
Kenny Florian is easily one of my favorite fighters ever
Regardless of his inability to win a championship or all the stupid “slay the master” shit he said before the BJ fight. I always look forward to seeing him fight, if this is it for him it will really be too bad
1N87 - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Kenny is the Dan Marino of the UFC.
Naztuu - January 12, 2012
or the Patrick Ewing
Rob Young - January 12, 2012
as a lifelong and disgruntled Knicks fan, that is so painfully appropriate i can’t even laugh at it.
Victor Rodriguez - January 12, 2012
Not really
People expected Patrick Ewing to be a great basketball player. No one expect Florian to be a high level fighter.
discoandherpes - January 12, 2012
Tracy McGrady, back injuries included
sun yue - January 13, 2012
Hope it's not the end for Florian
but if it is at least he’ll avoid being a guy who keeps fighting for too long.
Quick Ben - January 12, 2012
With all the Programming zuffa has going on I'm sure he can get a decent pay check that doesn't involve getting punched in the face...
I’d retire and open the next door…
RECE ROCK - January 12, 2012 via mobile
i really hope this isn’t the end for him, since i always wish that great fighters like him go out on their own terms. if it is over, i can only wish him the best.
it would suck for him to have that problem get worse over time after fighting.
Victor Rodriguez - January 12, 2012
I’ll always remember him as the nerdy intern on Dexter.
brad23 - January 12, 2012
This is incredibly sad to hear, and I can't believe how many people wanna joke about him now, or at all.
He may not have been a champion, but he’s one of the most under-appreciated fighters ever to fight in the UFC. Almost his entire MMA career was under the UFC banner. The guy continuously fought legitimate contenders, developed a well-rounded game, and did what all of you love so much, tried to finish fights. Not to mention how articulate of a person he is compared to the average person who gets punched in the head for a living. If it’s true, it’ll be a shame to see you go, Mr. Florini.
Zachary Kater - January 12, 2012
I’ll also always remember him as the only guy in the Ultimate Fighter house on season 1 to resist the great temptation of fucking with a beyond trashed Diego Sanchez. Such a genuinely nice guy, rofl
But seriously, always rooted for him for years now. This is a huge fucking bummer :( he was definitely the guy that had close to 0 god-given natural talent, and worked his ass off to reach the upper echelon of MMA, even if he came up short in championship bouts. I don’t care what any jokes anyone has to say, Kenny Florini is the god damn man and it blows imagining future UFC cards without him potentially being in them.
IanParedes - January 13, 2012
There are probably hundreds of former fighters who would have given anything to have Kenny’s career, and thousands training today who can only dream of attaining his level of success.
( . Y . ) - January 13, 2012
A great example of how dedication to technique and strategy can produce an upper echelon fighter
And how the borderline between great and championship elite is separated by a wall that can be so painfully thin sometimes.
Tonley - January 13, 2012
I'll remember Kenny as a Very Good, and almost Great fighter, who was a class act.
I think that the peak of his career was the win over Guida, that was probably the best Kenny Florian we ever saw in the cage, he was a monster that night. I also have a feeling that we are going to get to know him as a color analyst, and one of the faces of UFC as he does commentary work for as long as he chooses too.
One other way I’ll think about KenFlo is that he is at the top of the list of guys who if my kids, or someone said they wanted to study BJJ, or start training for MMA and asked for my opinion on where they should train, I would definitely point that person at Kenny Florian.
dpk875 - January 13, 2012
Outstanding fighter and great ambassador for MMA be very sad to see him go like this
Always been a fan of his. Win or loss hes rarely in a bad fight. Im sure the UFC will see him alright. If they can find a job for someone like Chuck then they can really use a man like Kenny!
Mustardfinger - January 13, 2012
He'll have a long career ahead of him as Ben Stiller's fight scene stunt double
