Anthony Johnson was supposed to make the jump from welterweight to middleweight at UFC 142 against Vitor Belfort. After years of struggling to make 170 pounds, he finally was doing the smart thing and moving up to 185.
...then he weighed in at 197 pounds.
The official explanation out of Johnson's camp for the weight problems this time was illness. Via MMA Weekly:
Robinson says that Johnson started feeling sick and unstable, and so a local doctor came in to check him out to see what exactly was going on.
The doctor gave Johnson fluids to see if it would improve his condition, and within a couple of hours, the Blackzilian fighter started to come back to life. Unfortunately, at this point it was too late to cut the weight back down to 186lbs.
"It was medical reasons, it wasn't for lack of effort," Robinson said. "The UFC was extremely supportive and said health comes first."
Now, Rumble has hit up Facebook and doesn't exactly sound apologetic:
I'm already laughing at what ppl are saying. Yeah it was for medical reason and I did what the UFC Dr Told me to do. Believe it or don't I give a f**k cuz the ppl close to me were freaking out but I'm still alive and something like this has never happen before. Say what you want I'm still gonna do my thang. You try not having feeling in your legs and can't move then and see how you look at life after that
I have a big problem with this. If Johnson was so bad that the people around him were scared and he's celebrating that he is "still alive." Why is this fight going on?
If he was to the point where he had no feeling in his legs and couldn't move them, why should he be allowed to step on the scale three hours later and fight the next day while being forced to not fully rehydrate himself as he has to weigh in again tomorrow?
If this is the truth and not just an excuse for blowing his responsibility to make weight, it sounds like health really doesn't come first.

Update:
Just to be clear, the MMA Weekly article said local doctor but Johnson said a UFC doctor. When I asked who the doctor was, Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports sent me this:

Maybe if he didn’t come in heavy so often I might believe what he is saying.
Earl Montclair - January 13, 2012
Seems plausible to me. I mean, as much as he cuts, Daniel Cormier-style weight cutting health problems are pretty plausible. He should probably move up to 205 before his kidneys go Galt.
toxic - January 13, 2012
His kidneys will become self-entitled assholes who overvalue themselves?
Scott C. Broussard - January 13, 2012
ha
I bet I’m the only one who gets this..
Tats16 - January 14, 2012

I’m sure more people get it.

Derek Suboticki - January 14, 2012
Johnson's head isn't in this fight anymore
He will lose tomorrow.
Chad Raynard - January 13, 2012
I was wondering, too, where his head would be for the fight
this is really going to affect him, I think. Johnson is fighting his biggest opponent to date, in a new weight division for him, and to top it off, the fight is in Brazil. The pressure on him to perform must be immense.
@KatanaClothing - January 14, 2012
Did he remove it to try and make weight?
VenusBlue - January 14, 2012
He doesn't care what we think?
I can live with that.
But he should care about what his boss thinks about him missing weight by that much.
IRodC - January 13, 2012

But Nate Marquardt and BAMMA have split up. Its a pity Dana’s announcement wasnt that he had been brought back to the UFC. Funny how these two were going to fight not so long ago so as well
Our Bovine Public - January 13, 2012
did marquadt ever even fight over in BAMMA?
milk72 - January 13, 2012
nope
he got pulled from the main event of bamma 8 so that bamma 9 would be their most stacked card but he apparently wants to actually fight so he left
Our Bovine Public - January 13, 2012
I’ve been waiting for the BE staff to make an article about it, so that we can make fun of BAMMA.
Horselover Fat - January 14, 2012
I’ve been waiting on BAMMA to have another event so that we can make fun of BAMMA
Our Bovine Public - January 14, 2012
Yeah. I also read that UFC Sweden sold out in three hours when it opened to the general public.. so now you know that.
Horselover Fat - January 14, 2012
Being an idiot, then blaming a "UFC Doctor"

Joben - January 13, 2012
Just some background, from what Iole said to me on Twitter:
Brent Brookhouse - January 13, 2012
I'm confused
Was it that guy or a local doctor?
IRodC - January 13, 2012
How come the Weekly article is saying it was a local doctor?
av1o3 - January 13, 2012
Because that’s what someone told them? I dunno.
Brent Brookhouse - January 13, 2012
So did the UFC doctor treat him
and tell him to stop cutting? Then it seems Dana is the dick for getting mad.
Joben - January 13, 2012
dana is a dick, but...
not for this. johnson knows that he has trouble with cutting water and he should have learned by now that he needs to diet down further before he starts cutting waterweight. 1, 2, 3 you’re out!
tha dude - January 14, 2012
Send him to Strikeforce to face Jacare for a #1 contender slot and let him prove over several fights he can make weight.

He needs to fightnat 205, and be done with it.
Snatchl - January 14, 2012
Comical that you can view the photo from the weigh-in above
and call him fatboy. Pre-fight prep went wrong, point blank. Kidney or liver issues will leave much more water on his frame. Failure aside, dude is far from fat.

makes weight at 170 last fight...but cannot make weight at weight class 15 pounds bigger...
ANTHONY JOHNSON KING OF TROLL PHYSICS
mattsterguy - January 13, 2012
None of this makes any sense
If his life was even close to being in jeopardy the doctors would have him in the hospital not preparing him to step into a metal cage to fight another man. If his life was in danger Dana White would not say his job is on the line win or lose. Had he not missed weight twice before this incident people wouldn’t be nearly as upset. Coming out and telling the fans who pay to see him fight to F&$% off was a terrible idea. Even we as fans know how Dana feels about his employees responding to their mistakes. This statement isn’t going to do him any favors with the UFC brass. Anthony may have very well just sealed his own fate.
CRWHITLOCK - January 13, 2012
You're acting like there's a third party, reputable commission overseeing this
KJ Gould - January 13, 2012
So what’s the over/under on whether or not he can make weight tomorrow?
Chris Hall - January 13, 2012
I’m thinking yeah he makes it
Our Bovine Public - January 13, 2012
If he has any sense at all, there is no way he is remotely close to making weight on the day of the fight,
and if he does come close to it, he will get utterly wrecked (and perhaps suffer brain injuries) at the hands of Vitor…
The American Ronin - January 14, 2012
He only has to be under 205 tomorrow
Chris Hall - January 14, 2012
But at what point tomorrow,
considering 218 is about what his in-cage weight would have been, had the cut gone as planned…
The American Ronin - January 14, 2012
He wont be far off.
Weigh in at 3 pm. Fight 8ish hours later. Easily can put 7 pounds of fluid back in you.
sklart - January 14, 2012
218 was his weight a week or two ago
He says that he gains ~25lbs between weigh in and fight night, whether at WW or MW, so he was planning to be 210 (and entered the cage ~195 at WW). Those 5 lbs shouldn’t be an issue, particularly since his second weigh in is several hours before the fight.
paythefighters - January 14, 2012
I think he makes the weight, but not by much
IRodC - January 13, 2012

I skirt this by registering with my actual real name everywhere. I wonder if anyone of my employers have ever googled me.
Tedd Welch - January 13, 2012

Terry_TKO - January 13, 2012 via iPhone app
I don't know about over/under, but
if these accounts are accurate, he won’t even be remotely close to making weight at 185, and given he was 218 pre-cut, he will be at a severe (and potentially dangerous) disadvantage even at 205, if what I read in the other account is accurate.
If he really has to be at 205 immediately pre-fight, he will be fighting dehydrated (by 4+ liters) and at risk for head trauma while fighting the pillow-fisted Vitor…Here’s hoping the next day weigh-in is first thing in the morning…
The American Ronin - January 14, 2012
I believe I saw someone say 2 o'clock tomorrow for his weigh in
Chris Hall - January 14, 2012
Random side note
But this could unintentionally work out for the best for the UFC. If Johnson wins tomorrow, then TUF Brazil won’t be tainted by the fact that Vitor is coming off a loss, because it will have been to a guy who was grossly overweight.
That’s the only positive I could come up with.
mburtoni - January 13, 2012 via mobile
Belfort is the most popular fighter in Brazil
No reason to think losing to Johnson regardless of the weight would have an impact on the ratings

He obviously ran into some serious problem during his cut, perhaps even unrelated to it (i.e. illness),
but if he really was 218 pre-cut and has to be 205 on fight day, unless it is first thing in the morning, he is going to be overly dehydrated and lose a fight that he should have won…
The American Ronin - January 14, 2012
should have won?
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here. Who has AJ beaten? And now who has Vitor beaten? Why would anyone assume that Rumble should win this one?

A lot of smart people are drinking the Rumble Kool Aid here. Personally, I don’t think he belongs in the same room as Vitor, let alone the same cage.

I admit ignorance here
Who is Shaw High? A quick Google search links the Doc to Andre Dirrell, and there’s a bunch of mock images from there on out.

haha
Andre Dirrell pulled out of his Super Six fight with Andre Ward claiming that he had “lingering neurological issues” from being hit late by Arthur Abraham. When he was talking to Showtime about it they asked who he saw about his head and he went “we saw doctor…uh…doctor…uh..shaw…high…Dr. Shaw High.”

Must have been an emergency, it’s quite obvious he shouldn’t be attempting such weight cuts
theworldismine - January 13, 2012 via mobile
AJ can give fits all he wants to fans, the fact of the matter though is he has lost all sympathy for having been a repeat offender over the years. This miss whether or not he was medically stopped is just the icing on a pile of shit cake. I think even his most diehard fans are tired of shit cake at this point.
Win or lose, AJ needs to suffer from severe consequences from the UFC for this. 20% of his purse isn’t enough imo.
Empty Thoughts - January 13, 2012
Wow, lost a lot of respect for Rumble....
As a UFC fighter it is your responsibility to make weight. Rumble should have had planned things out a bit better than cutting it all last minute. Rumble has continued to come in over weight, whether it be at welter weight or middle weight. It is extremely disrespectful to the UFC and the UFC fans and I think there should be stiffer punishment for not making weight especially by so much. I’m pretty sure a lot of fighters wouldn’t mind giving up 20% if they could come in 11 pounds over :S
DustinHAM09 - January 13, 2012
There is nothing unusual about the amount of weight to be cut, but something clearly went very wrong
the prep and actual cut are all done 7-10 days prior to weigh-in, with the vast majority of the actual water loss taking place 24-36 hours prior to weigh-in.
The American Ronin - January 14, 2012
I think cutting water from 218 would be at the highest end of the spectrum for 185. Sonnen claimed he was 207 in the cage against Silva and everyone thought that was pretty big. 218 in cage would be a decent sized 205er, not as big as Forrest, but not as small as Shogun/Hendo/Rashad.
Schwizzles - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Jon Jones was 218 before he fought Rampage.
dancingChicken - January 14, 2012
I really hope Belfort brings back the Phenom
I really hate when guys miss weight, especially this badly I really root for the other guy. Honestly, I would have liked to see Vitor make him sweat out a few more lbs before agreeing to the fight. 11 pounds over? WTF? He should be banished to 205 and we’ll see what Jon Jones has to say about all this.

P86 - January 13, 2012
vitor KO 1
Ben Bauman - January 13, 2012
Honestly Rumble needs to take a year off from fighting to get his weight cutting process in order before his kidney’s get to messed up or fail, hook up with Mike Dolce and get his weight in order so he can fully reach his potential
chavez_26 - January 14, 2012
Vitor had Dolce first.
BrothaDarkness - January 14, 2012
lol, I think Rumble is missing the point
sure it doesn’t matter what we think about his weight issues, BUT if he can’t make weight then he can’t be a pro fighter. Simple as that.
Seriously, how many times can a guy miss weight before the commission revokes his license!
squaresphere - January 14, 2012
Ask Paul Daley
Chris Hall - January 14, 2012
No commission would revoke a license for missing weight.
Brent Brookhouse - January 14, 2012
"Fuck you, its a medical problem" may well be a legitmate argument
If the medical problem didnt stem from the fact that your dumbass was trying to cut like 30 lbs in a few days.
Sean in Vancouver - January 14, 2012
easy saying that from behind the screen
grow up kid
MegaReem - January 14, 2012
time to fap
Bonedoctor - January 14, 2012
he's right
cutting 30lbs in a few days is a dumb idea
not like he said he’d kick rumble’s ass
i would though
twice
Cunny - January 14, 2012
That's only cause you can kick it from your house.
While he’s still in Brazil.
gzl5000 - January 14, 2012
Rumble is to blame – he is obviously not comfortable fighting guys his own size and has to try and give himself a significant weight advantage for every fight. Moving up to 185 and adding bulk when you already missed 170 by 6 & 7 lbs is unprofessional.
We’re not allowed to comment on that now? Whatever!
taptomyarmbar - January 14, 2012
I thought the whole reason we have weight classes is so that two people can fight at roughly equal size. Weight cutting seems to totally undermine this principle
terzergoss - January 14, 2012
you would think so right?
he’s like 6’2 and he made 170 somehow. 185 seemed logical and he’d still be on the big side of middleweight giving him a size advantage yet again. he won’t fight at 205 because he won’t have a sizeable advantage anymore and he’d get waxed out of there by anyone in the top 10 at LHW that’s why. Dude needs to learn how to fight better so he’s not worried about a size or learn how to cut weight like a fucking pro.
TheDreadedMarco - January 14, 2012
What a disgrace...
Did anyone see if Mike Van Arsdale’s foot was on the scale again?
Chin Check - January 14, 2012
Hahaha
Love the SN. Very underrated moment in BE history.
T.C. Engel - January 14, 2012
Send him to StrikeForce. Have him fight Kennedy for the number one spot against Rockhold.
J_Maddux - January 14, 2012
Health problems or not, he put himself in this position by weighing too much. Only one person to blame here. The UFC needs to take a stand here and say this is NOT okay to do. Suspension, fine, something, anything.
AHutch - January 14, 2012
ummm, they're already deducting 20% of his purse.
i’m pretty sure after this event, win or lose for AJ, the ufc will no doubt suggest him to move to LHW. his explanation seems plausible and i think Dana will cool down a bit.
daftshadow - January 14, 2012
They also deduct 20% for being 2 pounds over. This is something different altogether. He should not be allowed to fight today
AHutch - January 14, 2012
heres my take on what occurred
Johnson is way over weight, will miss anyways. The ufc doesn’t wanna scratch this fight because its got Vitor Belfort on the other side and the card is in Brazil.
Cue a sob story on how sick Johnson was hours before weigh ins. They hydrate him and suddenly he’s a-okay. Fight goes on. Ufc doesn’t lose a big semi main event. Plus it brings new life into the mw division if johnson can ever make weight. Because if it weren’t for this big of a stage, johnson would be cut before the fight. Now, vitor has a chance to beat a blown up mw and possibly wipe him out of the ufc. If he loses, he lost to a lhw.
No doctor, would allow this fight to go on. No sane person would go into a fight having been near death hours earlier.
Ricardo Arguello - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Maybe if you stopped trying to cut 50 lbs per fight you fuckin tool
Medical reasons?? I don’t give a shit, fight at a higher weight then. It’s YOUR choice what weight class you compete in, nobody is forcing you. Dumbass, hope you get your ass KTFO & cut from the UFC. Go fight in Strikeforce.
Mr.Italiano - January 14, 2012
the hate is strong with this one
i must say i enjoyed it immensely
keep it up
Cunny - January 14, 2012
What's weird about this is how Dana White doesn't seem pissed off at all.
James Brady - January 14, 2012
he'd be more pissed if the fight was not going to happen
i couldn’t care less as long as they fight, the others can go cry about it but his still fighting and they are still going to watch
MegaReem - January 14, 2012
Until a doctor says otherwise, I'm going to assume it was due to the weight cut...
Which means it’s still 100% Johnsons fault. He had issues cutting to 170, so he moves up to 185. In his move to 185 he adds more bulk (probably both fat and muscle), wtf? If you’re having trouble cutting to a lower weight class, then don’t move up a weight class and add more mass, that’s the same shit haha.

Anyone else think
These guys who miss weight should pay more than 20%? Incrementally.
i.e. 1 lbs over 20%, for every pound over that 10% more.
Missing weight is becoming way too commonplace, guys would rather take a 20% hit than actually go the extra mile to take the weight off.
taptomyarmbar - January 14, 2012
on that basis Rumble would have to pay 10% of his purse to the UFC! :-S
taptomyarmbar - January 14, 2012
Johnson has a FUPA.
lordrelay - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Come on guys, this is the only time AJ hasnt made weight...
in Brazil
malo - January 14, 2012
"im sick, i can come in today"
Except im a professional fighter and i get 2 to 4 paydays a year, and if i excel i can be making six figures in this calendar year. I actually have the god given talent to do so. But i have a 2nd tier, losers mentality.
Done with Rumble. Not a fan.
warren305 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
didnt you get his comments
he doesn’t care ,get your tissues ready when he beats vitor foob

that made him balloon up, you been under rock man?
MegaReem - January 14, 2012
Breaking news Johnson was diagnosed with Procrastination.
dancingChicken - January 14, 2012
he obv never did the weight cut properly ... otherwise he wouldn't feel fine after fluids in a couple of hours lol
Thorpey - January 14, 2012 via iPhone app
To bad the fight wasn't in Mexico...
Rumble would have had montozuma’s revenge and would have been under the weight limit…

Honestly
His kidneys are probably still messed up from all those stupid, unnecessary cuts to 170. He should’ve been fighting at Middleweight a LONG time ago and the cut he made to make 170 bordered on cheating IMO. I’m a Rumble fan but I always thought it was ridiculous that someone his size was allowed to compete at 170 lbs. I do believe that the doctor had to rehydrate him before the weigh-in because coming in that much overweight would be bizarre under normal circumstances.
Terry_TKO - January 14, 2012
There should be a weigh-in 4 days before the fight… you can’t be more than 10% over your fight weight. Let’s stop with this cutting 40 pounds in a matter of 2-3 days BS. Guys are putting themselves at serious risk by doing that.
Shnak - January 14, 2012
And
What’s with the d-bag attitude? I hope Vitor smashes him.
taptomyarmbar - January 14, 2012
I love how Vitor basically turned this to his benefit
..with the stipulation that Johnson come in at 205.
Vitor is probably going to be 205 or more by fight time anyway, so there’s no weight disadvantage. Johnson has to keep watching his weight up until the fight as opposed to rehydrating properly. And Vitor gets 20% of Johnsons moneys.
Vitor made out like a bandit here. I like it!
Peter Nathaniel Fury - January 14, 2012
As he should...
Atomic Salmon - January 14, 2012
why not make him cut more and make him weigh 185
Our Bovine Public - January 14, 2012
even arianny's looking on like "really? ha, you're fucked now!"
Cunny - January 14, 2012
^^Thats how every Brazilian looks at Arianny
like.. “you call THAT a ringcard girl????”
DayuumHeGotDropped - January 14, 2012
why hasn't anyone called out Rumble's camp yet?
they’re not looking out for the fighter’s best interest if they keep on trying to get him to cut weight that he obviously can’t
squaresphere - January 14, 2012
His Management is at
fault here just as much as AJ is. They should have him working with a nutritionist to make these weight cuts, that’s a no brainer. They should also control his FB account. Allowing him to miss weight by 11 lbs and then take to FB to lash out at his fans is two strikes. This whole incident stemmed from his trying to cut too much weight too quickly. It wasn’t some outside illness.
