Carlo Prater defeats Erick Silva by disqualification. Mario Yamasaki called the fight at :29 in round 1.
Erik Silva landed a spring knee to the body that buckled Carlo Prater. Silva followed up with punches and finished the fight in strikes until Mario Yamasake was forced to stop the fight. After the stoppage Prater was pointing to his shoulder saying he was in pain. The replays didn't show how his shoulder was injured. There was confusion after the fight with many people assuming Erick defeated Carlo. It was explained that Mario Yamasaki called the fight because of punches to the back of the head.
Erick Silva is considered on of the top prospects and it is a shame that he picks up his first UFC loss in this kind of controversy. He was apologetic in his post fight interview. Joe Rogan stated that he will consider this a win for Erick Silva.

Horrible Call
Absolutely crap there. Erick was obviously hitting the side of the head.
RiZE - January 14, 2012
I disagree with the call
But real time, I thought a lot of those were landing back of the head. Slowed down on replay, it became a little more ambiguous. At least one to the back, and a few really in a grey area. Tough call. Shitty break.

Can they overturn it?
With no commission in Brazil?
jason18 - January 14, 2012
Jones lost by dq and look at him now. Sucks for Silva but he will be back and I’m sure he will still get his win bonus.

This is some BS… As soon as I saw the ref to the “love the world heart” symbol with his hands I knew something would go wrong. I repeat… this is some BS !
Incognegro - January 14, 2012
Incredibly awkward interview
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a ref challenged like that. Was it because he wasn’t under a commission, or was Mario just being respectful even giving Joe the interview?
aptar - January 14, 2012
absolute bullshit
Clearly Mario made a mistake. Joe Rogan even said and check Dana twitter. He most certainly doesn’t agree either. I saw one blow to the head and clearly the others were flush on the side of the head. I’m pretty sure he will contest the disqualification and it will be overturned. Just bullshit.

I don't know what was worse...
the call or Joe Rogan putting the ref on the spot …
That was a dumbass move for Mario to grant him the interview in the first place.
Suffocate - January 14, 2012
what are you talking about. joe really earned his money tonight. no better time to confront a bad decision than right on the spot.
Hardy's in your face - January 15, 2012
I'd like to know how the back of the head is defined.
It looked to me like silva was striking behind the ears which could be considered the back of the head, even though it appeared to be on the side.
btag58 - January 14, 2012 via Android app
headphones...
imagine someone wearing headphones and everything from the front is legal, other side is illegal
therefore it wasn’t a HORRIBLE call but he may have been able to let it go
Suffocate - January 14, 2012
enough is enough
for back of the head strikes. someone needs to be made an example of.
Ars Nova - January 14, 2012
Enough is enough for phantom strikes to the "back of the head" being called in MMA.
I’m glad Yamasaki was put on the spot by Rogan.
Akemi Homura - January 15, 2012
And now here comes Vitor
If you thought this was bad….lol kinda here and there but enough to warrant a dq or at least no contest. No rematch please.
cager - January 14, 2012
I completely disagreed with the call, but I felt bad for Mario when Rogan called him out. Even if Yamasaki realized he had made a mistake, I wouldn’t expect him to own up to it without time to sit back and review the tape carefully. Hopefully the call is overturned, though I’m not sure who would have the authority to do that without the presence of an athletic commission.
Tsubame - January 14, 2012
He deserved it,
he needs to be called out for this bullshit. It’s not like this was the first mistake he’s made.
Chad Raynard - January 14, 2012
The announcer throwing the ref under the bus in the cage is horribly unprofessional.
PeteJ - January 15, 2012
It's honest.
Fuck sweeping shit under the rug just so some inept stooge can save face.
Akemi Homura - January 15, 2012
FUCK you mario
FUCKING UP my BE CW
inthepipes - January 15, 2012
Was not the best nor the worse call.
The DQ was questionable, those hits were/at/around the back of the head… its hard to think what could be a alternative…stop during the flurry and warn him for the back of the head shots? The other guy could of been out of it and be unable to continue.
Then again….what is per say the back of the head? The soft spot of the skull? The general area of the back or the base area of the skull?
Guillermo Ponce - January 15, 2012
I saw two that were back of the head
one was like 2-3 punches in and one was 2-3 punches before the stoppage
anything in the mohawk area, the back of the head, or above the nape of the neck, but if a fist is touching an ear it’s okay
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - January 15, 2012
Did anyone else's parlay's get screwed by this?
X5-452 - January 15, 2012
looked to me that there was only one punch that hit the back of the head flush, and that was while mario was already waving off the fight. looked for all money like he was stopping it for a TKO – i wonder if he was, and that one punch that landed flush in the back of the head made him decide to DQ him. either way, i’m sure Silva will get his win bonus, move up the ranks and the UFC may even change it to a NC – pretty sure they can do that without much trouble as there was no AC. they definitely can’t change it to a win though
Arran - January 15, 2012
Yamasaki killed my parlay
I WANT MY MONIES >:(
The best I can hope for now is the UFC overturning it and me getting my money back. Is that even possible? I wouldn’t be surprised if Sports Interaction fucks me too.
Fuck.
timetosaygoodbye - January 15, 2012
it can be turned into a NC
NastyGuido - January 15, 2012
Clearly
In cases like this the ref needs to have the ability to make a call after watching a replay on the monitors. That was a ridiculous call.
taptomyarmbar - January 15, 2012
Yummysack should have stopped the onslaught immediately if he thought there was an issue and subtracted a point
But then I suppose he couldn’t if Prater was already out.
There seemed nothing blatant about the strikes that justified the DQ.
