Jose Aldo is a phenomenal fighter, there is no other way to say it. He came into UFC 142 against a guy that was supposed to be the exact guy to beat him in Chad Mendes. Mendes was fast, agile and had great MMA wrestling. But all that didn't matter because Aldo is a better fighter.
Aldo was never taken down in the fight, a fact slightly tainted by a blatant fence grab to prevent from being put down once, and it seemed pretty clear from the first shot that Mendes was not going to have anything for Aldo on this night.
But the result of the fight (a crushing knee and punches TKO, for those who missed it) is not as important as what happened with Aldo in his native Brazil tonight. The second he got the knockout, he sprinted from the cage and into the crowd where he was mobbed by fans in love with what he had just done. Aldo was a star to some degree in Brazil, but this was the moment where he became a superstar in the country. This was Jose Aldo becoming something more than a fighter and more than a champion.
Jose Aldo is something special.
- Watching how quickly Anthony Johnson faded in the first round it was pretty clear that the guy wasn't healthy. I'm not saying he was sick, I'm saying he's killing himself to make weight, even at 185. When the story coming in is that doctors stepped in and told you that you must rehydrate, that's a sign that you're not doing things the healthy way.
- It was good to see Belfort get a big win, he's a hard guy to not root for. He was given a gift with Johnson not being active from top position and then very quick ref stand-ups. But once Johnson was clearly gassed and not able to attack, it was Vitor pouncing and showing that killer instinct.
- It was very interesting to hear Rogan say over and over that Johnson was at 186 and had to rehydrate on doctors orders and then push the idea that Johnson and Belfort were so close in weight on fight night that it really wasn't that unfair. Only to switch to saying how unprofessional it was multiple times during the interview with Belfort in the cage afterward.
- Rousimar Palhares winning by heel hook was entirely predictable. And, let's be real, that's awesome. How many other guys do you talk about rare finishing moves like a heel hook and act like it's just standard business and expected?
- Carlo Prater beating Erick Silva by DQ is going to be controversial either way. It looked to me like Silva landed several shots to the back of the head and I can see DQ'ing him to some extent. Given the lack of commission, I fully expect the UFC to change the result to a no contest. You can't reverse a loss into a win (you just can't, don't make me go into a long explanation of it).
- The real issue with the Prater/Silva fight is that there is no clear, accepted definition of back of the head. If it's the "mohawk" method, no, you don't DQ the guy. If it's the "headphone" method, then yes, you do DQ him. Until we get all referees on the same page, expect more of the same.
- Oh, and no, just because other incidents haven't been punished doesn't mean that no situation should be.
- I don't even know how to describe how awesome Edson Barboza's wheel kick knockout of Terry Etim was. It was one of the most spectacular knockouts I've ever seen in my years of watching any combat sport. It's the kind of knockout you'll never forget.
Much more after the jump.
SBN coverage of UFC RIO 142: Aldo vs. Mendes

- Thiago Tavares and Sam Stout put on a totally forgettable fight on the FX undercard. Stout was able to keep the fight standing up for much of the duration but didn't do enough work to earn the win. Tavares won, that's all there is to say really.
- I had a feeling that Gabriel Gonzaga would truck Ednaldo Oliveira and that's exactly what happened. Once he had a eel for Oliveira's range, he got inside, took him down and controlled him until he locked in the choke. It was a good return for Gonzaga and should temper expectations of how high Oliveira's ceiling is.
- Maybe it's not fair of me, but I'm hoping Michihiro Omigawa gets cut from the UFC. I find his fights pretty reliably boring and I don't think he's really good enough to hack it in the UFC. Yuri Alcantara dominated him until he ran out of gas in the third round. Alcantara has pretty good upside from what we've seen so far.
- Mike Pyle ran through Ricardo Funch like he was nothing. Pyle isn't going to challenge for a title in the UFC but he's going to dominate a lot of guys while being a fringe contender.
Never going to forget Aldo's win.

When it came to the weight cutting issue
Joe Rogan could have been handcuffed if only slightly before the fight because the UFC didn’t want him to play up the fact that Johnson missed weight so severely just in case he won. Once he loses, its all fair game.

What do you think about the UFC’s potential in Brazil? Can Jose Aldo become a huge star? Did Vitor grow his star-power tonight? how many people do you think were aware/watching? What does this all mean for the UFC in brazil?
Jeremiah Johnson. - January 15, 2012
the fact that it was on globo makes it pretty much safe to say that A LOT of people watched it. I live in Rio, and both of them are huge stars here.
tanakz - January 15, 2012
Doesn't the event being on so late(isn't it like 3AM there?) hurt that?
HaterSlayer - January 15, 2012
a little but its saturday. and they’ve advertised it a lot
tanakz - January 15, 2012
If by several you mean two?
I mean come on. Prater was moving his head, trying to make only the back of his head attack-able, and even then, the majority of the blows were to the side of the head. He SHOULD NOT have been DQ’ed.
juanchoD - January 15, 2012
I'm tired of fighters trying to use the back of their head as a shield or putting down one hand on the canvas.
Clearly trying to manipulate the rules and bait an illegal blow should not be encouraged. Don’t reward them for “playing the game” as Herb Dean put it.
Akemi Homura - January 15, 2012
I think stuff like that is a valid defense
If a guy turtles you should hit knee him in the body. Guys should do a better job of picking their shots when an opponent is hurt and face down. Hitting someone in the back of the head is extremely dangerous.
HaterSlayer - January 15, 2012
I like it when guys are going for the kill, but are patient at the same time. They know they are in control and arent just Donkey Kong-ing for the finish, much like when Lesnar fought Mir the first time.
You know guys are gonna use the back of their heads as a defense and possible fight stopper, so just take your time and dont spaz out
Ricardo Arguello - January 15, 2012
That's the thing though
Only one or two strikes actually landed on the back of the head. And they were the explicit fault of Prater.
juanchoD - January 15, 2012
"HUMAN COCKFIGHTING"

Huggy Bear - January 15, 2012
I agree but something should be done about finishing guys to the back of the head like Belfort/Akyama and Henderson/Fedor.
I don’t think it should have been done in this situation but guys should be thinking about that.
J_Maddux - January 15, 2012
I think most top control wrestlers at lightweight beat Barboza. That knockout was sweet, but I’m not sold on his TDD enough to think of him as a highly touted prospect just yet, especially since the entire top 10 at LW is powerful wrestlers and he got taken down pretty easily twice by Etim
savik - January 15, 2012
At least two or three of them aren’t. I’d also say that Edgar is a clever and quick wrestler, not a power wrestler.
TheFilt - January 15, 2012
some great performances
Awesome , awesome wins from ALdo and others. One point of disagreement. I dont think there would have been any controversy at all if Mario had just called it a TKO for Erick Silva. You could clearly see one go to the back but no one would have batted an eye if Mario just waived it off as a TKO for Silva.
Hardy's in your face - January 15, 2012

P86 - January 15, 2012
I'm surprised you didn't mention Rogan putting Yamasaki on blast like that
I thought it was COMPLETELY unprofessional for Joe Rogan to do that and he was totally out of line for it. It is not Joe Rogan’s place to hold a referee accountable and undermining him like that in public is unacceptable.
HaterSlayer - January 15, 2012
Agreed
Refs should be accountable, but it’s not the commentator’s job to interview them about their mistakes. Especially when Rogan (who I like) is crazy biased sometimes.
Jeremiah Johnson. - January 15, 2012
Not only do I find it completely acceptable, I encourage it in the future.
You have to shine a bright light on these kinds of screw ups; shame the farcical commission hearings will never get the same amount of public attention.
Akemi Homura - January 15, 2012
It was great when it happened to Russell Mora.
He was egregiously bad to an extent where I’d say he was on the take, and I’m absurdly cautious about making any statements like that.
This was more of a Joe Cooper in Khan vs Peterson thing. Khan was pissed he got deducted points for pushing, which is illegal, but refs usually overlook. The complaint amounted to “Yeah I broke the rules but everybody just tells me to knock it off and lets me keep doing it anyways!” That’s what happened here, except Erick Silva is not a whiny narcissist like Amir Khan.
pdl - January 15, 2012
IMO Rogan does his job in an excellent fashion when he get as much information to the viewer as possible. He did a particularly good for the viewer tonight. You could argue it embarassed the ref or commission and such but I think he served the viewer particularly well.
Hardy's in your face - January 15, 2012
I don’t have a problem with Rogan sharing his opinion, but insisting to Yamasaki that there weren’t any illegal shots when clearly a couple landed on the back of the head is what really rubbed me the wrong way. If you’re going to ask a guy to explain his decision, then don’t just completely shit on him and ignore the visual evidence that he references when he gives you an explanation that you don’t like.
alxn - January 15, 2012
he acknowledged there was at least one but as Joe mentioned you could also see that Silva was working to avoid the back of the head and the one(s) that hit the back were not in an effort to do so.

It was good to see Aldo KO rasslers like Mendes. Clearly he had been practicing that knee to anticipate Mendes re-shooting in after a clinch break. Hopefully we’ll see more of that technique against rasslers.
Omigawa was painful to watch as usal. What was the deal with the bobbing and weaving in with his face sticking out and his hands down to his chest? Worst technique ever. The guy is durable as hell, but man… he needs to keep his hands up.

Hardy's in your face - January 15, 2012
The article called this a "wheel kick".
This is called a “spinning hook kick”. That curves around and is supposed to hit the opponent with the heel of the foot.
I’ve been saying they are underutilized in MMA for a long time.
Just like when Silva got the knockout with a simple front kick to the head.
MMA fighters that are good kickers need to have the best kicks from traditional martial arts and supplement them with their muay thai, almost any time I have seen one of these kicks used it is successful. Of course, timing is everything though.
A “wheel kick”, which I actually remember being taught as a “crescent kick”, is one where the leg is kept straight and swings up and outward “crescent” shape and comes around to hit the opponent in the side of the face with the side of your foot and then going back down. Or, making the motion of a wheel.
But, different people teach it different ways so they all might be right. I just was taught that this is a spinning hook kick.
jcbrewer - January 15, 2012
different disciplines have different names for the same move, let’s all remember the great Brazillian/question mark kick debacle of 2010.
Phildo - January 15, 2012

Earl Montclair - January 15, 2012
Definitely knee bar. Definitely.
TheFilt - January 15, 2012
he couldn’t get it against Hendo, he may not be any more succesfull against chael.
Hardy's in your face - January 15, 2012
Hendo had a whole lot more to offer on the feet
He’s also got a lot less sub losses than Chael.
TheFilt - January 15, 2012
Not to mention he’s a bit better defensively when it comes to fighting. Chael’s got an incredible offensive output, but doesn’t know what to do when you put his back to a wall, a la Jeremy Horn and Demian Maia.
MicahtheCynic - January 15, 2012
Good point
I think Chael may psych himself out fighting a guy like Palhares.
He seems like he mentally checks out at a certain point and he would have to be kinda terrified of the fight hitting the mat.
TheFilt - January 15, 2012
I’d say Chael can gas Palhares out by putting the pressure on him. The guy looks like a gas-fest waiting to happen. Chael would play it conservative and Palhares fades away.
KGNLuc - January 15, 2012
I could see that...
Chael just outworking him, and keeping it on the feet until Harris tires; he does look like a gas-fest waiting to happen.
Atomic Salmon - January 15, 2012
I’ve got it on good authority that chael’s never been outstruck. I’m just sayin that Chael can sprawl out as good as anyone.
Hardy's in your face - January 15, 2012
lol
Pretty good. :)
Oh, he can defend the TD. But strange things happen in a fight. Both guys have comparable stand up, I’d lean toward Palhares because he’s got more power and good kicks.
I don’t like Chael in this fight because he loses composure or focus at times. Do that once against Rousimar and you drag yourself back to your coroner.
TheFilt - January 15, 2012
Rousimar can pull guard as well
And Chael doesn’t have the punching power to deter him from doing so, whereas Hendo does.
Also, I assume this was a typo:
but I’m not entirely sure….
VenusBlue - January 15, 2012

Seriously, what's next for Aldo? Is there anyone that can realisticaly beat him at 145?
He just crushed arguable the best wrestler, he’s already beat arguably the 2nd best striker in the FW division, looking at the FW division i can’t imagine anyone beating Aldo..
Id love to see him either move up to 155 and fight frankie, or have frankie move down and fight Aldo. That seems like a super fight that is more likely to happen than Silva vs GSP or Silva vs Jones
darkotto23 - January 15, 2012
Frank Edgar needs to be at 145
That would be a nice little fight to see.
aaronb - January 15, 2012
If Edgar loses to Bendo
Then Edgar going to 145, knocking off some fringe contender then fighting Aldo makes tons of sense.
VenusBlue - January 15, 2012
they have Barao
and KZ left as viable contenders but that’s about it.
benten20 - January 15, 2012
Barao is 135 broseph.
He’s going to crush Cruz like a paper cup though.
Pyrgz Krum - January 15, 2012
shit ok major brainfart there
im gonna go flog myself now because i never thought i would make such a bad mistake like that
benten20 - January 15, 2012
I still think 145 is a challenger rich division, but it’s becoming difficult to see any of them beating Aldo at this point. Let’s not write them off just yet, though.
Off the top of my head:
Dustin Poirier – good win streak, well rounded, good at changing up on the fly
Erik Koch – excellent striker, only loss is to Chad Mendes in 2010
Chan Sung Jung – well known, two big wins in a row
Outside shots:
Bibiano Fernandes could do well in the UFC if he came over stateside, but would need to rack up a number of wins
Hioki if he turns in a better performance in his next fight
Ross Pearson if he adjusts well to featherweight (high hopes for him)
I think Aldo is going to rule his division for a long while.
Frankie has a lot of contenders to swipe away too.
Pyrgz Krum - January 15, 2012
Whoops I forgot Bibiano was 135 there.
Strike Bibiano off that list.
Pyrgz Krum - January 15, 2012
he is?

benten20 - January 15, 2012
plus i agree with you
i really dont see aldo losing the title to anyone right now. i really think hes gonna clean out the division
benten20 - January 15, 2012
poirer is signed to fight already so now wouldnt work
Ricardo Arguello - January 15, 2012
Yeah I didn’t take scheduling into account. Just rattling off a list of the fighters who I believe have accomplished enough within the division to earn themselves a title shot.
Pyrgz Krum - January 15, 2012
even still
none of the fighters in the FW division pose a serious threat.
Koch? hed get steamrolled
Jung? Same.
Hioki? Same
He has to defend but I dont think anyone poses a serious threat. Just like when Anderson had that string of 3 unworthy challengers…
Ricardo Arguello - January 15, 2012

He looked fucking great at 155 against a much bigger Pat Healy. He gassed, but he was grappling a man at least 25lbs bigger than him.
The talk is he is headed down to the UFC’s FW division, as he was clearly way too small for LW.
That said, he’s skills looked extremely sharp and he’s always been an incredible athlete with an extremely aggressive style.
I honestly believe he has as much of a chance of beating Aldo as anyone else. Maybe more.
TheFilt - January 15, 2012
It’d be nice if he got shipped to the UFC but he’s probably locked in the Strikeforce prison like so many others

Awesome pic, who is the photog?
J/w just watched Ms Lin’s piece on Helwani’s site and wondered if she got this one too or if it were somebody else with the lucky shot

Esther Lin wasn’t at Rio for this card, unfortunately. She’s my favourite too. :(

i think it’s pretty awesome that a featherweight fight was headlining a show “co-mained” by a middleweight fight featuring a local legend. that’s a good thing for the acceptance of smaller weight classes. i wonder if it’s a cultural difference between the US and brazil?

If the FW fight was non-title it would never have happened
they just had to put the title fight at the top of the card

Also in news this weekend is the war Dana started with ESPN. Link to Aldo story on the front page of espn, highlights of the fight easy to find, results on the ticker, Barboza KO on sportscenter… he really bit off more than he can chew.

Things that are annoying me
1) Erick Silva not having another W on his record
2) The poor standard of reffing in MMA
3) The complete ambiguity of MMA rules
4) People getting pissed at Joe Rogan calling out the ref. He made a mistake and should be accountable for that.
5) People saying Aldo holding the fence changed the outcome of the fight. No. Stop
6) Those lasers that the crowd were shooting on non Brazilians.
7) This obscene hangover
