In the championship bout Jose Aldo defended his featherweight belt against Chad Mendes in his home country of Brazil. The fight showcased why Jose Aldo is the most dominant fighter ever at the weight class. Brent Brookhouse provided play by play for UFC 142 tonight Here is how he called the fight live:
UFC Featherweight Championship: Jose Aldo (c) vs. Chad Mendes - Round 1 - They touch gloves and here they go. Both men moving a lot and feeling out distance. Leg kick by Mendes lands solid, Aldo with a much better one in return. Mendes is still trying to throw leg kicks with him and Aldo is getting the better of those exchanes. Mendes shoots and Aldo defends very well. Aldo is stalking and trying to get the distance figured out. Huge leg kick by Aldo again. Uppercut by Mendes misses by a mile. Big body shot by Aldo and Mendes shoots and can not finish the takedown. Aldo with a kick, Mendes shoots, gets deep on the single leg but Aldo keeps upright. Phenomenal takedown defense so far. Leg kick by Mendes lands. Aldo with a knee, Mendes with a takedown attempt and this time manages to lock around Aldo's waist. Aldo grabs the fence to prevent the takedown. Mendes tries for the takedown and Aldo bounces back up. Mendes still trying for the takedown, he can't get it. Aldo spins, lands a huge knee and Mendes drops. Punches and Mendes is out! Aldo runs from the ring into the crowd and is being mobbed by fans! Jose Aldo wins by knockout (knee and punches), 4:59 of Round 1.

Aldo running into the crowd is one of the greatest moments in MMA I've ever witnessed.
It’s amazing how great of a fighter this guy is. Mendes had the best shot of beating him of all the current Featherweights and Aldo shrugged off his takedowns like they were nothing
The man is amazing.

For Aldo's Next Fight
I’d like to see him fight on UFC on FOX 3, maybe a Co-Main Event to Jones/Evans (i know I’m ahead of myself)? I’ve seen it said around here that the Korean Zombie should be the next in line, and it would make for a great fight on basic cable. I don’t know if it will be much of a challenge for Aldo, but UFC has to be thinking about padding his record for a mega-fight with Frankie Edgar.

Anyone else feel some BJ Penn nostalgia during this moment.

He did a similar thing in the WEC and got yelled at for it. Good to see him back to himself again.

Well now people can stop repeating those tired cliches for a while.
Of course, I’m sure there will be many calls for Aldo to move up to lightweight.
Oh yeah . . . Aldo is ducking Frankie Edgar, Ben Henderson, Clay Guida, Cerrone and a number of lightweights in the UFC.
Is this an example of late night trolling?

Chills is what I feel.
This is the sort of reaction that makes a sport.
And the UFC’s security nearly prevented it.
Fantastic moment.

And fuck am I glad I bought and stayed up to watch this PPV live just to see that as it happened. I could hardly sleep at 7am when the card ended.

Cheater
Aldo is a cheater and prevented Mendes from taking him down by holding the cage. Who knows what would’ve happened if the fight had gone to the ground. I can’t believe the ref didn’t stop the action to take a point away from Aldo right there and then. That was beyond ridiculous.
With that said, awesome finish Aldo. You had to cheat, but you finally got your finish in the UFC. Well done.

Someone's butt hurt.
A lot of people grab the fence, most of the time it is just a reflex and the ref just takes their hand off or yells at them, they don’t stop the match. By your logic, Aldo grabs fence, the ref stops match, Mendes further loses his advantage (which he didn’t have in the first place) and they go back into the middle of the ring standing where Mendes definitely didn’t have the advantage either.
It’s a lose-lose.

I don’t care. It probably wouldn’t have changed anything, but it’s still an illegal move and he possibly benefited greatly by grabbing the fence. What if Mendes throws him to the ground and injures him in the proccess, earning Mendes a TKO victory? It could have changed something. That’s my point.
I’d like to see the referee stop the action in this situation, take a point away, and restart the action with the guys against the fence in the exact same position.
Shnak - January 15, 2012
What do you want?
For Aldo to be disqualified for one cage grab? Otherwise the fight ends the same way.
alxn - January 15, 2012
How do you know? How do you know that Mendes couldn’t have done something on the ground? That’s my point. We don’t know.
Shnak - January 15, 2012
Well it’s not like the referee is going to stop the fight and give Mendes top position on the ground, so I’m not sure exactly what you wanted to happen. I would’ve been fine with Aldo losing a point, but it wouldn’t have made a difference in the outcome.
alxn - January 15, 2012
If grabbing the fence is a foul, why not stop the fight to take a point? Also, since Aldo was clearly going down without that intentional foul, why not restart the fight with Mendes in Aldo’s guard?
Shnak - January 15, 2012
I agree that a point should have been taken, or a warning at the very least. But they still would have been in the same position, against the fence. It may make sense to start the fight on the ground, but that would never happen.
