In the third bout of the UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes main card, Rousimar Palhares struck even more fear into the legs of fighters everywhere with a quick and brutal heel hook submission of Mike Massenzio. It was over in just 63 seconds, with Massenzio screaming in pain as he tapped and spending a long time lying on the mat while Palhares ran around doing an Incredible Hulk impression. Basically, it looked like many other Toquinho fights.
Palhares opened the bout with some strong leg kicks. Massenzio tried to answer with a jab, but another Palhares kick landed low and forced Massenzio to take a timeout. Once the fight started again, Toquinho followed a leg kick with a takedown, and eventually grabbed a leg when Massenzio managed to (almost) get back up. Palhares took a second to lock it on and forced the tap shortly thereafter.
What was the high spot of this fight?
The heel hook finish. Palhares is a beast and has made a career out of these sorts of submissions. Watching him win in that fashion is like a scene of macabre beauty.
Where do these guys go from here?
Palhares has a huge reputation and a 7-2 record in the UFC, but doesn't really have a huge victory over a contender yet. He has lost both times he faced a major step up in competition. The inevitable call for him to face a top guy again has already started, but it's tough to find a logical fight for him. Alan Belcher? The winner of the Yushin Okami vs. Tim Boetsch bout scheduled for UFC 144? Brian Stann? We'll just have to wait and see what the UFC wants to do with him.
Massenzio drops to 2-4 in the UFC and 1-2 in this stretch, though one of the losses was at a late replacement in a 205-pound bout. He might be out for a while with a leg injury, but I expect him to get another fight in the organization. A matchup with Brad Tavares would be a good bout to assess whether Massenzio deserves to stay in the UFC or not.
Watch it now, later or never?
Now. It's only a minute long, and Palhares is a monster. What's not to like?

Palhares has proven to be able to consistently beat the mid-tier of the UFC Middleweight division. Despite losing to Henderson and Marquardt, Palhares at this point really does need to fight the top of the division as he has shown that he can consistently beat the mid-tiers of the division.

He lost that Marquardt fight because
he is fucking dumb. I don’t like to count that fight as a lost because what he did was just sooooo fucking stupid. He even got Marquardt down to the ground pretty quickly too, if that fight went on I think he would’ve gotten the leg sooner or later.

I would love to meet Palhares, the guy is probably an odd one, but he just dropped everything in that fight to try to tell the ref Marquardt is greased. It was awkward and I guess he did stop defending himself, but that match was stupid—it didn’t say anything about either guys actually ability to fight
Robert V-U - January 16, 2012
It was dumb but
I actually started to dislike Marquardt after that fight. He looked at Paul looking at the ref…seen he wasn’t going to intervene then starting punching harris in the face…weak ass move by Nate IMO
AfroSamurai - January 16, 2012
how is that a weak ass move? What would you expect him to do?
Our Bovine Public - January 16, 2012
He pulled a Floyd
or vice-versa.
SentientAndroid - January 16, 2012
I wanted to see Palhares win, but that was absolutely a smart move on Nate’s part and a dumb move on Palhares’ party. Defend Yourself At All Times.

Palhares' *part*
But it is a party whenever that man steps into the octagon.
Tedd Welch - January 16, 2012
You're mad at Marquardt
For punching a dude in the face during a fight?
discoandherpes - January 17, 2012
Palhares vs. Sonnen
I don’t think he can win a title, but he definitely can beat Chael Sonnen
SSreporters - January 16, 2012
Palhares is going to finish this off
av1o3 - January 16, 2012
Screaming and holding the cage

taptomyarmbar - January 16, 2012

Robert V-U - January 16, 2012
i would LOVE to see them fight, geesh i wish there some like polling website where Dana could get some feedback for what fans want
Marc Gunn - January 16, 2012
I'd love to see Sonnen fake tap with him
Palhares would take that shit off
AfroSamurai - January 16, 2012
I agree that Harris could sub Sonnen...
But if they did fight, I could almost see Sonnen fighting smart and trying to keep it on the feet. His TDD is great, his boxing is decent (knocked down A.Silva) and his cardio can last for weeks. I have a feeling that Harris is gas-o-matic waiting to happen.
Or Harris would take Sonnens leg home in under a minute. Either onw. :)
Atomic Salmon - January 16, 2012
Chael Sonnen could probably outbox him for a decision
Sonnen has a hell of a chin.
discoandherpes - January 17, 2012
Something I found hilarious in this fight
was when Paul accidentally kicked Massenzio in the nuts and just stood their with his fist out waiting for Mike to give him a bump but he was too busy adjusting his package on tv.
av1o3 - January 16, 2012
It's a Paul fight there's always something awkward.
UncleMax - January 16, 2012
Was anyone surprised with this fight?
I vote Palhares vs Okami/Boetsch winner.
The Armchair Juggernaut - January 16, 2012 via mobile

AfroSamurai - January 16, 2012

UncleMax - January 16, 2012
Paul Harris always oozes awesomeness
If he miraculously beats a few top MWs i could see him taking Anderson’s Limb, it seems he can grab a hold of anything
elmojo - January 16, 2012
If he can grab a limb...
