Huge news coming out of the Twitter of UFC president Dana White. Mark Munoz was set to face Chael Sonnen on the upcoming UFC on Fox 2 card while Michael Bisping was to meet Demian Maia, but an injury to Munoz has Sonnen moved into a fight with Bisping. Dana also said that the winner will get a title shot against UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
Here's the tweet:
Obviously Sonnen has the wrestling edge but Bisping is notoriously hard to control on the ground and do damage to from ground and pound. While Chael will deservedly be the betting favorite but I think Bisping is much more of a live dog here than many will be willing to accept.
Regardless, Bisping vs. Sonnen is a much "bigger" fight in terms of casual interest than anything involving Demian Maia or Mark Munoz. This is actually a bit of a "win" for the promotion in my eyes.

Get Palhares
To step in and fight Maia. That would be a fucking epic ground war.
HeadKickOfDoom - January 17, 2012
This was my first thought. Take a look at the Rankings and him and Stann are pretty much the only respectable fighters that would make a good fight.
Tim Bernier - January 17, 2012
If Vitor wasn’t banged up, I’d love to see him take on Maia.
woooburn - January 17, 2012
Maia
would be executed rather quickly.
SentientAndroid - January 17, 2012
Umm
Define quickly. Maia is an excellent grappler, a former ADCC champion. It isn’t like he is fighting fucking Mike Massenzio or something. This would be a clinic of excellent jits.
HeadKickOfDoom - January 17, 2012
RolloTomasi - January 17, 2012
Nate has a history of killing both of these guys
HeadKickOfDoom - January 17, 2012
A history of violence

RolloTomasi - January 17, 2012
I also misread
And thought Android was referring to Palhares and Maia being over quick, and not Vitor. So I will agree that Belfort would make quick work of Maia.
HeadKickOfDoom - January 17, 2012
It's all good
yeah I was talking about Vitor/Maia, I think Maia/Rousimar would be the bees knees!
SentientAndroid - January 18, 2012
That was weak
He punched him as he was talking to the ref

John Danaher's Hair - January 17, 2012
I think that’s a bad fight. Maia doesn’t have the standup. Why let him get obliterated? He needs to build up some momentum and Vitor needs to fight one more tough guy before his next title shot. I predict Vitor vs Munoz for next title shot after Sonnen vs Bisping winner gets his.
Tim Bernier - January 17, 2012
Vitor/Munoz
would be fun!
SentientAndroid - January 18, 2012
Damn it
You beat me to it haha
rscott94 - January 17, 2012 via mobile
Even though Palhares didnt take much/any damage in that fight thats still a pretty short turn around
Our Bovine Public - January 17, 2012
he has no concept of time.
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012
meant more in terms of the commish letting him fight? How long was Tito 132/133 turnaround?

3 weeks i think
Leben did it for Simpson and Akiyama
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012

But he’s no Palhares

KGNLuc - January 17, 2012
Well, since you asked nicely....
nannerb - January 17, 2012
Maia can't hang with dangerous strikers. So Stann and Belfort are out of the question.
May be Palhares. Leben suspended for a year. Brad Tavares?
daftshadow - January 17, 2012
As much as I'd love to see that fight,
I don’t think it’s fair to Maia to force him to change his training camp that drastically on 10 days’ notice. Training for Bisping is much different than training for Palhares.
Scott Haber - January 17, 2012
well
he could always not fight, not stay active, and not make any show or sponsorship money….and then fight Palhares in 3 months anyway…
Chris Groves - January 17, 2012
And be better prepared and win
So…yeah, he should do that unless he feels like he’s gonna tool him on no days notice.
KGNLuc - January 17, 2012
Maia fighting Weidman!!
Coeman - January 17, 2012
Have you ever seen high level grapplers grapple?
It usually turns into a stalemate that is slow and very close. That said with the heel hooks, it might be a very scramble filled fun fight as well.
discoandherpes - January 17, 2012
I wish
But it seems like they already tried.
jim-ma - January 18, 2012
Great news!
RolloTomasi - January 17, 2012
This is awesome
I’ve already been called a traitor for picking against Bisping in a potential match with Sonnen. Now I guess I’m going full reverse-Benedict Arnold.
KJ Gould - January 17, 2012
Nice Historical name-drop
BKdroid - January 17, 2012
I expect Bisping to be much like this throughout the fight
KJ Gould - January 17, 2012
absolutely perfect
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012
Bisping might be on his back early and often but is in 0% danger of making that face
There’s no way Chael rocks him, let alone Ks him TFO.
The Lethal Haze - January 17, 2012
Chael rocked Anderson.
Tim Bernier - January 17, 2012
On roids though.
MicahtheCynic - January 17, 2012
And you think he's off roids now?
For realsies?
KGNLuc - January 17, 2012
The lack of roids will deffinitely effect Chael's hand-eye coordination now.
KJ Gould - January 17, 2012
If you say so
It seemed to me like Chael hit Anderson when he was off balance. Anderson’s legs were just fine after the second he took to regain his balance.
The Lethal Haze - January 17, 2012
he did rock him and he was also on roids so all points stand
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012
He rocked Anderson
The same way he has powerful G&P
But the steroid thing is fact and undisputable, I’ll give you that

darkotto23 - January 17, 2012

he just got old.
RolloTomasi - January 17, 2012
sometimes those things happen in mma
darkotto23 - January 17, 2012

KJ Gould - January 17, 2012
Also the men hitting him are Vitor Belfort and Robbie Lawler.
Tedd Welch - January 17, 2012
Belfort and Lawler are possibly the two hardest punchers in the division though
Horselover Fat - January 17, 2012
true, but that doesn't mean that Lindland has a good chin
darkotto23 - January 17, 2012

NickRingp4pGOAT - January 18, 2012
1) Anderson was definitely not off balance
2) Damn what a sick fuckin elbow
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012
1) Anderson wasn’t rocked, he has solid legs almost immediately after the punch lands (and look where his right foot is when the punch lands, oh its IN THE AIR)
2) Yus
The Lethal Haze - January 17, 2012
No you’re right, he wasn’t rocked, he was tripping over the paint on the mat.
Jeesh, the Silva nuthuggers are unbelievable.
Shnak - January 18, 2012
A drop
for a drop. Andy’s so fucking dangerous, beautiful elbow, he threw it like an overhand right! I don’t like Chael, but he ate that shit like a bawse.
SentientAndroid - January 18, 2012
Watching these gifs
I am reminded just how FUCKING CRAZY NUTTY BALLS it was watching Sonnen pull this off.
UncleMax - January 18, 2012
I LOVE Andy
but he got rocked.
SentientAndroid - January 18, 2012
Yeah… this is a much easier matchup for Chael stylistically. I was concerned Munoz was going to derail the Anderson/Sonnen rematch, but those concerns have subsided.
Diz D - January 17, 2012
Same here. I would imagine Chael was pretty happy, despite the limited time to prepare.
Machiel Van - January 17, 2012
I’m just not sure if chael has enough time to prepare his bisping smack talk to hype the fight properly. i think we’re getting short changed.
YoungGun - January 17, 2012 via mobile
I am very happy about this, as I too was worried about the Silva/Sonnen fight not happening. I see Chael descisioning his way to victory.
Kefka - January 17, 2012
What does Munoz do better than Sonnen?
discoandherpes - January 17, 2012
He's got more power in his ground 'n' pound
Shaun32887 - January 17, 2012
And that's about it
Lesser wrestling, lesser chin, lesser striking, ect.
discoandherpes - January 18, 2012
I agree
Shaun32887 - January 18, 2012
Hits harder…bad stylistic matchup (hard hitting wrestler) for Sonnen. Munoz beat Sonnen in collegiate wrestling. At the very least he’d be hard to control.
Diz D - January 18, 2012
rec'd for relevance
Rob Young - January 17, 2012

Sonnen ftw!!!
Maia vs Palhares???
rscott94 - January 17, 2012 via mobile
that would be a GREAT fight

szanpan - January 17, 2012
That would probably be an awful stand up fight.
truck - January 17, 2012
Stand up?
What is this standup you speak of?
RolloTomasi - January 17, 2012
That thing where Maia slowly throws punches with decent form, but little power.
…and Paul Harris throws ugly power shots in every direction.
truck - January 17, 2012
Those ugly power shots are designed to clear a path to your LEG
UncleMax - January 18, 2012

HeadKickOfDoom - January 17, 2012
yes, please!
gspmademegay - January 17, 2012
I can’t fucking wait. I’m slightly bummed that it won’t be that Triple Header, but this is an awesome fight. The step down from Munoz to Bisping is going to be a breeze for Chael.
Tim Bernier - January 17, 2012
Damon O. - January 17, 2012
Bisping
is screwed.
LebenByTriangle - January 17, 2012
Bisping
By triangle choke.
YPG - January 17, 2012
Chael is going to truck him. It’s going to be an obliteration.
Tim Bernier - January 17, 2012
When's the last time Sonnen "obliterated" someone?
Sure, he beats guys convincingly, but (barring the Stann fight), he’s a decision machine.
YPG - January 17, 2012
Sonnen has sold himself so well
That people have bought it all. He’ll most likely win, but it probably won’t be pretty or all that violent
BKdroid - January 17, 2012
missed the Nate fight, huh buddy?
he whooped dat azz.
lukustra - January 17, 2012
He controlled that fight
But unless I’m mistaken (and I’m not) not only did Marquardt come closer to finishing the fight despite Sonnen being on top the whole time, he also managed to cut up Sonnen and avoid much damage from GnP.
YPG - January 17, 2012
Nate did more damage than sonnen
Nate should have won that fight but god forbid a wrestlefuck losses a round or two
Scurnt - January 17, 2012
no chance, rewatch the fight
Kevin Jennison J. Zametov-St Pierre - January 17, 2012
nate got piss pounded for 3 rounds. yeah sonnen didn’t land any savage bombs through nates guard but he controlled him and was constantly striking. nate may not have been cut up but he definetly was hurting by the end. yes he almost got the guillotine but it didn’t work out.
YoungGun - January 17, 2012 via mobile
The first round was like a 10-8 round for Chael
Marquardt attempted like two guillotines and landed one elbow. Stop trolling. You couldn’t give a single round to Nate. 30-26.
discoandherpes - January 17, 2012
He trucked Stann
troyd - January 17, 2012
Everyone is so fucking blinded by their hatred of Sonnen that they forget what actually happens in his fights. Same thing happened with Jon Jones before his fight with Rampage.
Tim Bernier - January 17, 2012
What?
Everyone except like three people are saying that Sonnen is going to destroy Bisping with no effort…. What are you reading?
BKdroid - January 17, 2012
I think my mistake was those three people are posting a lot of fucktarded comments in this thread. The results in 11 days will speak for themselves.
Tim Bernier - January 17, 2012
A lot of fucktard comments like...
“Bisping has a 0% chance”
No-one is saying Bisping is definitely going to win, but there’s a few realistic people here recognising that Bisping actually does have a chance.
YPG - January 17, 2012
No, he's got negative chance
Bisping has a better shot of killing Chael with mind bullets than he does in an MMA fight.

Sorry, I never miss a chance to quote Chick Hearn. But yeah, Bisping has not much of a chance at all.
Skoobs - January 17, 2012
this fight’s gonna be a lot closer than some of you think. Bisbing’s got better standup than Chael and his TDD is as good or better than Andy’s.

Outside of Hendo

I think Chael will probably do enough to win, but I’m not expecting any truckings.

well
you should already be sending a “sorry for your loss” note to Massenzio’s knee ligaments so another one would be appropriate.

Rob Young - January 17, 2012
Not according to the Atha’an Miere.
The so-called Beautiful - January 17, 2012
Not sure
why people are acting like this an easy fight for Chael. I know Bisping isn’t particularly spectacular at any one thing, but it’s not like Sonnen’s sub defense went from mediocre to competent with a win over Stann. Just because he reinvented his image doesn’t mean he’s reinvented his game.
David Castillo - January 17, 2012
Probably because isping is waaaaaaaaaaay more disliked than Chael.
Also Chael looked pretty much unstoppable against Stann. Bisping looked somewhat vulnerable against Mayhem Miller’s wrestling (before he gassed)
IRodC - January 17, 2012
I personally dislike Chael more than Bisping.
BKdroid - January 17, 2012
Dude
You just said Sonnen’s submission defense was mediocre, how is lasting almost twenty five minutes on the ground with Anderson Silva a bad thing?
Chael’s got some high level jits, bro
WanderChe - January 17, 2012 via mobile
The bolded part.
The Lethal Haze - January 17, 2012
You cant blame him for the Maia sub. Maia executed that whole sequence flawlessly. The sub to AS was just a mental lapse that he’s been working on. Chael’s sub and sub defense skills are plenty good enough for Bisping at this point in his career.
Hardy's in your face - January 17, 2012
He mentally lapsed on Jeremy Horn 3 times?
The Lethal Haze - January 17, 2012
yes

Horn only submitted him twice, but yes, the same Jeremy Horn with 60 sub wins. People discredit his sub defense, but the majority of his submission losses are very high level MMA grapplers. People claim he has shoddy sub defense while quoting losses to Silva, Filho, Sobral, Horn, and Maia.
Baby Wads - January 17, 2012
He has 11 losses
8 are by sub. Distinguished grapplers such as Forrest Griffin and Trevor Prangley have submitted him.
You realize the fact that he has been submitted by every Brazilian he’s faced isn’t proof that he’s a good grappler, right?
The Lethal Haze - January 17, 2012
people improve over time. chael is a good grappler that much is obvious. the whole point of my comment was that Bisping doesn’t have the goods to tap Chael.
Hardy's in your face - January 17, 2012
ahhh man, you're taking me a bit too seriously
I don’t think Bisping has what it takes either. I predict a fairly pedestrian UD for Chael.
My point is Chael sucks because fuck Chael.
The Lethal Haze - January 17, 2012
I just wish Chael haters could keep their views on his personality from biasing their views on his MMA.
Bolshevik - January 18, 2012
LOL
The exact same thing could be said about Bisping. The way people talk, you’d think he has a losing record.
YPG - January 18, 2012
lol
I think he’s a good wrestler with shitty sub defence… I resent the fact that the majority of his game (imo) is based around top control and gaming the URs.
Must be blind hatred.
The Lethal Haze - January 18, 2012
He clearly beat Stann, Marquardt, Okami, Dan Miller, and Paulo Filho (the second time) regardless of how you interpret judging criteria.
You either didn’t see the fights or you’re letting your opinions of Sonnen’s personality (and rap sheet, in and out of MMA) change how you see them, which makes any discussion with you an exercise in futility.
Bolshevik - January 19, 2012
what are you even replying to?
Where did I comment about any of those wins? You are straight making shit up to argue about at this point.
I don’t like his fighting style in general. I don’t like the shit that comes out of his mouth in particular. And I find it hilarious that once he found a “voice” alot of MMA fans think he’s some world beater…. he’s the same grinder with shitty sub defense to me.
The Lethal Haze - January 19, 2012
So being vague lets you deny later?
What does “gaming the unified rules” mean to you? Sonnen doesn’t do things like intentionally keeping one hand on the ground to avoid being kneed. Obviously you’re talking about exploiting overvalued takedowns and top control to win rounds. But I’ve seen Sonnen’s last five or so decisions and he earned them all regardless of that.
Bolshevik - January 20, 2012
stop arguing with the voices in your head, please
How was I being vague, if it turns out you knew exactly what I meant? Do you read what you write before you post?
I never said otherwise. I never said any of the other guys deserved the win in those fights under the current scoring criteria. So you can stop talking about it, unless the voices in your head compel you to.
I just think that if the URs were clarified or reemphasized away from control to damage, guys like Sonnen wouldn’t fight the way they do today. I don’t like wrestlers who come in planning to pin their opponents (either to the floor or the cage) as their path to victory. I LOVE wrestlers who come in to try to end the fight.
But holding that opinion obvsiously makes me a fanatic, and not worth discussing MMA with… Which is why you’ve spent so much time rebutting the voices in your head instead of what I’ve written.
The Lethal Haze - January 20, 2012
Good God you’re terrible at this.
Bolshevik - January 20, 2012
Help me wrap my head around it.
You think I suffer from psychosis because I misinterpreted your post, then also inexplicably accuse me of misusing the term vague on grounds that – as the rest of the post clearly shows – my interpretation was spot-on all along.
My entire point is that Sonnen won his last five decisions based on damage based scoring too (please watch the fights?), so I don’t think the unified rules are responsible for his style, Einstein.
I will never be able to take another argument with you 10% seriously ever again.
Bolshevik - January 20, 2012
if you are not ESL, I feel sorry for you
and I’ll try to help you out, but you can’t even follow your own arguments.
you think I’m being vague, but thats because you think I’m talking about Chael’s last couple of fights… except I wasn’t talking about those fights, just grinding in general. Which you almost seem to understand, but then keep talking about fights and arguing with me like you know what I think about them.
I think you hear vioces that aren’t there because you are arguing about things I never said- Like Sonnen didn’t win those fights or his opponents were robbed.
I’m of the opinion that damage based scoring/reffing would have led to more standups in Chaels fights, and possibly points deducted for stalling (and regardless of your opinion, I think Chael stalls). You realize a change in the rules would force fighters to adjust their gameplans, right?
I posted my opinion on “grinding” as a “fighting” style. If you can’t stand that that is what I think… maybe you shouldn’t get so wound up about my opinion to the point you find yourself arguing over points I never made.
The Lethal Haze - January 20, 2012
I haven't claimed that I expect him to take gold in the absolute division at the ADCC
But he wasn’t submitted by Joe Schmoe and Billy Bob Williams out at Wild Bill’s Fight Night. I was simply saying that most of the men that submitted him were high level black belts, far above Bisping’s level. If you want to tell me that Bisping has better submission abilities than any of those Brazilians, then please explain your logic. Also concerning the Forrest and Prangley submissions, I wouldn’t doubt that he has improved his submission defense in the nine years since those bouts.
Baby Wads - January 17, 2012
I just enjoy shitting on Chael. Why?
The Lethal Haze - January 17, 2012
Fair enough
I can accept irrational hate, as long as people admit that it’s irrational hate.
Baby Wads - January 18, 2012
It's rational to hate Sonnen
Chris Barton - January 18, 2012

One of my favorite submissions of all time.
KGNLuc - January 17, 2012

Crazier thing have happened than one top 5 fighter beating another.

Mustardfinger - January 17, 2012

he spends the rest of the round on his back
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012
If he steps in the cage with Sonnen
he spends the rest of the fight on his back.
RolloTomasi - January 17, 2012
If he turns around
The Chael spends the rest of the fight on his back!
KGNLuc - January 17, 2012
What?
RolloTomasi - January 17, 2012
Back mount, son.
Zachary Kater - January 17, 2012
Whoa, that could be a sweet lateral thinking puzzle...
Sonnen and Bisping fight, yet Sonnen is on his back for the majority of the bout. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE???
Also, if there is a puddle in the ring, someone used an ice bullet.
Moper - January 17, 2012
in all seriousness?
Good TDD, good scramble, better technical boxing. If Bisping can frustrate a good percentage of takedowns, get back up quick, and pepper Chael with strikes, he could conceivably UD the UD master. It’s not like either of them are great finishers.
I’ll pick Chael to win all day, but I won’t be stunned if Bisping finds a way. He’s pretty good at this MMA business.
Dave Strummer - January 18, 2012
Too bad Bisping isn't exactly a top 5 fighter...

If Maia had that Munoz decision go his way I’d rather see Maia vs. Sonnen II.
SSreporters - January 17, 2012
People really like to say dumb things don't they?
Worldisart - January 17, 2012
Fine, he has minimal chance. Do you want me to be more serious?
What does Bisping have for Sonnen? He’s got much better boxing than Chael and has one of the best boxers in MW. But that’s about it. He’s a notoriously slow-starter and Chael is more than capable of grinding him out in three rounds.
SSreporters - January 17, 2012
I don’t think that’s true
Chris Barton - January 17, 2012
Bisping has a solid ground game, is good off his back, good at creating scrambles. Once he gets his timing and rhythm he’s great at sticking a fighter at the end of his jab and out pointing him.
I get that people don’t like Bisping, but he’s not some scrub being led to the slaughter. I’m picking Sonnen to win, but he lets people he has beat back into fights, and it can cost him.
Worldisart - January 17, 2012
Oh don't get me wrong I don't hate Bisping as a fighter
But unless he can keep it on the feet and get into Chael’s range the whole fight I don’t see a victory for The Count.
If Bisping beats Sonnen I’ll laugh my ass off because Silva vs. Bisping would be one hell of a mismatch.
SSreporters - January 17, 2012
I can see Chael winning the first round and then Bisping finding the range needed to stop the shot and winning the second and third. This isn’t the squash match you and so many others seem to be painting it as.
Worldisart - January 17, 2012
a fun mismatch though!
gspmademegay - January 17, 2012
not that it's relevant but
Who would you guys pick in a Bisping vs Stann matchup?

AfroSamurai - January 17, 2012
Yeah, this is indeed a win. Had both Munoz and Maia won (a far outside shot, but a possibility) the MW division would be in some serious trouble as far as the next contender goes. Either man winning this one makes for a perfectly fine challenger.

Bisping does really well against wrestlers
He’s beaten a good MMA wrestler in Hamill and should have beaten a great MMA wrestler in Rashad. Mike’s only gotten better with his footwork and TD defense. This smells like an upset.
Chris Barton - January 17, 2012
damn.....mentioning the Hamill fight in your defense of Bisping.
very interesting.
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012
He won that fight
it was just super close. Chael is an amazing MMA wrestler and should be the favorite, but Bisping is a real live dog here. He is super aggressive off his back and is hard as fuck to takedown.
Chris Barton - January 17, 2012
On any other country's soil, he lost that fight.
but anyways moving on from that…..
Chael is by far the best wrestler Bisping has ever faced. I think if the same Chael shows up against him that showed up against Stann, Bisping gets trucked
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012
The one judge who scored it for Hamill was the only British judge

a number of MMA websites scored that fight for Bisping?
Chris Barton - January 17, 2012
So? Some people say cucumbers taste better pickled!
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012
Saying Bisping won that fight
is more akin to saying the world is flat. Did those “MMA websites” have Nick Ring beating Fukuda too?
Machiel Van - January 17, 2012
Nobody likes an exagerator.
Chris Barton - January 17, 2012
An exaggerator? Where?
Machiel Van - January 17, 2012
They do
But it indicates that a good amount of knowledgeable people scored the fight for Bisping. Which should indicate it was close.
Chris Barton - January 17, 2012
Im not saying it wasnt close.
i just thought it was a clear 29-28 for Hamill. Just my opinion
Earl Montclair - January 17, 2012
"Huh?...Huh?"
NickRingp4pGOAT - January 18, 2012
No effin way he won that fight.
RolloTomasi - January 17, 2012
He did
it was close, but he did. He “won” the Rashad fight even more convincingly, which is even more impressive.
Chris Barton - January 17, 2012
He "beat" Matt Hamill.
SSreporters - January 17, 2012
Hamill, who’s every bit as fast and explosive as Sonnen…
Machiel Van - January 17, 2012
I’m with you.. Bisping actually has great takedown defense, and is really good at getting back up to his feet when taken down. Will it be enough to stop Sonnen? Probably not, but it could be closer than what most are giving him credit for.
Horselover Fat - January 17, 2012
Exactly
Chris Barton - January 17, 2012
Bisping has good takedown defense
Not great takedown defense. He’s currently sitting at 64% on FightMetric, which puts him in the same range as Demian Maia and Nick Diaz. He’s been taken down by such wrestling luminaries as Wanderlei Silva, Dan Miller, and Chris Leben, not to mention the schoolings he received from Hamill and Rashad (6 each). He’s good, but he’s a long way from Jose Aldo territory.
Patrick Wyman - January 17, 2012
Good point! Still I think he has a better chance than no chance at all, like some are arguing.
Horselover Fat - January 17, 2012
of course he has what we're doing here is to hype the fight umm for us fans LOL
in real anyone in a fight has a chance. What s chaels big opportunity here is that the best way to take him out is by submission and in the case of Bisping its not likely to happen.
btw i like this hyping i have never seen fans so glad for a contender change. Was there any other condenter change as famous as this one???
szanpan - January 17, 2012
Yeah I get that, I just.. I guess I don’t hate Bisping quite as much as most folks, so when I see all the hate he gets I sometimes revert to defending him! Just to balance things out a little.
Well, hmm.. it has definitely happened a couple of times, when people got injured and the new match-up became a better one. At the top of my head, what I can come to think about right now is the whole Diaz / Condit / Penn / GSP switcharoo a few months ago had some good and bad turns. We got to see Diaz vs Penn which was fucking epic, and now soon we get to see Condit vs Diaz which is a dream match-up too. All those guys are ultra-violent fan favorites, so matching them up with each other pleases many. Still sucks that GSP is injured of course, but at least there are some cool fights in the mean time!
Oh and people were really looking forward to Condit vs Penn too I guess, that didn’t happen.
Horselover Fat - January 17, 2012
Very true
Like you pointed out, I think the key is his scrambling, more than his TDD per se. Submitting Sonnen from his back is a pipe dream; Sonnen rightfully gets flak for his sub defense, but the guys who’ve managed to submit him are all extremely technical, high-level black belts, and Bisping doesn’t fall into that category.
Patrick Wyman - January 17, 2012
Yeah, exactly, even if he gets taken down he’s a tricky bugger to keep on the floor for long. I don’t see him posing any submission threats either. His only chance will be his usually tactic of sprawl and brawl – ie prancing around the cage throwing pitter patter punches and keeping his opponent at distance. If he gets taken down, he need to focus on getting up, up, up.
Horselover Fat - January 17, 2012
It's not only TDD though
Also, how fast he scrambles back up. I guess many of the TD that are scored against Bisping in those stats had him on his back for all of twenty seconds. These numbers alone do not tell the whole story.
KGNLuc - January 17, 2012
Bisping doesn't have great tdd
He has great scrambling ability.
discoandherpes - January 17, 2012
Chael won't need to be able to control Bisping on the ground.
Cause even if Bisping can get back up to his feet, he’ll just get taken down again. And again, and again, and again.

Bisping is a live dog, if he can stay on his feet he’ll win a decision easily.

Bisping was the first to start the verbal fight quote below:
" unlucky for Chael Sonnen I m fighting him next week"
Chael Sonnen’s best weapon is his mouth and thats something that’s going to be absolutely useless in this fight"
Chaels response:
Im going to knock the teeth out of this snot nosed Brit who calls himself royalty, who calls himself a count . I m MMA royalty and America will tune into the Chael Sonnen Show.. "
ok that was the very last time i have quoted anything from twitter lol

Tats16 - January 17, 2012
New Fight
Why not make Sonnen fight Hendo? He has been itching for a title shot and is looking better than ever. This fight makes no sense to me at this point. Sonnen will eat Bisping alive. Not because Sonnen is so great, because Bisping is so bad
WhoWinsIWins - January 17, 2012
Hendo won’t cut to 185 for anyone but Silva.
Machiel Van - January 17, 2012
Especially not on two weeks notice
KGNLuc - January 18, 2012
Aren’t they both Quest guys? Or is Hendo suing them? I forget
Our Bovine Public - January 17, 2012
“Team Quest” really refers to two separate training groups. There’s the one run by Lindland (Oregon) and the one run by Hendo (California). Sonnen trains with Lindland’s group, but they all go way back together.
Machiel Van - January 17, 2012
i remember Sonnen saying in an interview that he wouldn't fight Hendo, Linland or Leben because they are all team Quest guys
darkotto23 - January 17, 2012
How long ago was this?
Weren’t their camps suing each other?
av1o3 - January 17, 2012
2011? Don't remember. As a far as I know the beef is between Dan and Lindland, i don't know how involved Sonnen is
darkotto23 - January 17, 2012
Maia can beat both Vitor and Palhares.
The Don Mega - January 17, 2012 via mobile
he could, but most likely he wouldn't
let’s face it Maia isn’t going to take Vitor down, and even if he manages to get Paul Harris down he would match him tit for that on the ground
darkotto23 - January 17, 2012
:/
He can of course, but more than likely Vitor would starch him and on the feet against Rousimar they’d be fairly even. I’d probably give the advantage on the feet to Rousimar due to his power advantage and on the ground I assume that they’d be even, but even there I’d give Rousimar a slight advantage due to his strength.
SentientAndroid - January 18, 2012
In order to get that shot I think he would do it. He has been saying very adamantly that he wants a title shot. This assures him if he wins, he gets it
WhoWinsIWins - January 17, 2012
Circumstances force them to book the fight they should have made in the first place.
Sonnen vs Bisping is a win-win situtation with either being a great, marketable challenger for the title. No one cares about Mark Munoz.

warren305 - January 17, 2012 via mobile
Good fight.
I wish there was more time to isten to the trash talk and the hype up of the fight, but oh well. I think it should be a pretty close fight with bisping landing his shots on the feet and chael landing his shots from bispings guard. Anyone thinking this will be a one sided bisping beat down doesn’t remember chaels love for being choked by shapes and bisping has an above average bjj game. my prediction; a long boring decision for chael in which he lays on bisping with an ear on his chest and swinging arm punches over his head. Anything more gets chael subbed and any less gets him dropped and tkod on the feet.
OptimusPiss - January 17, 2012
I was pretty excited for Munoz to finally be exposed for his shitty MMA wrestling and bad stand up by Chael but this is a fight I’ll settle for. If this is for the #1 contender, then Vitor’s probably gonna get the follow up shot if he beats Wandy

Good job on that. Boo, blame immigrations.
I do like to see someone actually take a break from training to remove any small niggling injuries, extend their career
UK MMA MAN - January 17, 2012
Ahh whelp
Maybe the winner of Chris v Maia can fight Paul Harris in a FX or Fuel card in some small town in Brazil sorta like Brazil’s Oklahoma
AfroSamurai - January 17, 2012
Hopefully Manaus
Garbanzo - January 17, 2012
damn is that their Oklahoma
I thought they had some HUGE stadium
AfroSamurai - January 17, 2012
Honestly
I have no idea its just one of a few cities I know of in Brazil cause I’m geographically challenged
Garbanzo - January 17, 2012
He only has 7 fights, and the best name on his record is Alessio Sakara, been training just ju-jitsu for last few months?
UK MMA MAN - January 17, 2012
Well, he’s a damn good wrestler at least.
Horselover Fat - January 17, 2012
Great, so he’ll be forced to use ju-jitsu and not try to stand and bang awkwardly
UK MMA MAN - January 17, 2012
Maia that is
UK MMA MAN - January 17, 2012
Well.. I’m not sure who is the better striker at this point. If Maia could get it to the ground that would be great obviously, but it’s not going to be easy against Weidman. Who knows what’ll happen if it turns out to be a striking match-up.
Horselover Fat - January 17, 2012
he's a purple belt under Matt Serra, and he actually competed in the 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship's
so it’s not like he’s some BJJ newbie. Plus his wrestling is great so he decides where the fight takes place, it could be another Maia vs Munoz.
darkotto23 - January 17, 2012
Agree that striking match could be random, looking at the fight metric report http://www.mmamania.com/2011/6/12/2219798/ufc-131-results-demian-maia-vs-mark-munoz-fight-metric-report-shows shows just a weird result of maia having lots of powerful headshots, which might mean u question his power, but taking lots of body shots.
But maia did WIN the ADCC not long ago. Submitting someone with a d’arce choke in a clever manner does look good but completely different level of opponent. He hasn’t had a ground n pound victory in the way of successful wrestling mmaers, I haven’t seen him enough to form a solid opinion but does that say something?
UK MMA MAN - January 17, 2012
Chris Weidman is one of those wrestlers who has adapted to the sub game extremely well
I think he’ll also be physically stronger than Maia, so I think he’s a live dog.
At the same time I think Weidman is the future middleweight champion.
discoandherpes - January 17, 2012
via Dana’s Twitter:
3rd fight in the FOX Jan 28th is Maia vs Undefeated Chris Weidman!!!
Ryan Andersen - January 17, 2012
hope Paul catches a break soon
AfroSamurai - January 17, 2012
What do you mean?
He turned down the fight.
wonderfulspam - January 17, 2012
Yeah i know but hey still hoping for winner of that fight to get Paul
Maybe for a Brazil fuel or FX card in Brazils Oklahoma
AfroSamurai - January 17, 2012
dunno how i feel about that.
kid’s got some balls to step up against Maia like that on short notice.
Victor Rodriguez - January 17, 2012
This is awesome, Cheal has a much better chance against Bisbing .
Kefka - January 17, 2012
it’s Bisping
Rob Young - January 17, 2012
As a Sonnen hater I'm unhappy about this fight
only because I think Bisping has less of a chance to beat Chael than Munoz
Robust23 - January 17, 2012
Garbanzo - January 17, 2012
So rather than a guy who’s a technically better striker, you would rather have sonnen face an inferior MMA wrestler
UK MMA MAN - January 17, 2012
Man I hate Sonnen and this is a easy win for him.
But he claims that he isn’t going after Anderson after he wins this fight, he will either go after GSP or Jones. I hope it’s Jones so Sonnen can get the ass whooping he deserves.
Meek Mill - January 17, 2012
Oh dear God
You actually believed something that Chael Sonnen said??
YPG - January 17, 2012
Hahaha
Afrotikiman - January 17, 2012 via mobile

inthepipes - January 17, 2012
I'd have to disagree with most here.
Sonnen/Munoz and Bisping/Maia were much better fights, aside from prefight trash talk
sitnam90 - January 17, 2012
In what way, shape, and form
Is Sonnen v Munoz any better than Sonnen v Bisping? Aside from saying the words its much better, how exactly?
Sonnen v Bisping is better without even having to breakdown the danged fight. The simple fact that Bisping is going to get TRT’d across the entire pond is enough to nab 1 million ppv’s. Fuck I’ve got wood just thinking about the wood im gonna get for this!
nicey - January 17, 2012
Sorry
I like watching competitive fights. Munoz has a chance to defend the takedown and take Sonnen out of his gameplan. Bisping doesnt have the power to KO Sonnen (if anyone does), nor the ground chops to submit Sonnen. He wont defend most takedowns, and if he is able to get back up (which is possible due to his scrambling ability), Sonnen is competant at striking.
Munoz has wrestling to defend Sonnen or even go for a takedown himself, and the power to give him the edge in the standup.
sitnam90 - January 18, 2012
Disagree. Nobody cares about Munoz, so that’s that. Everyone loves to hate both Chael and Bisping… so pitting them against each other is brilliant marketing. Almost everyone has been saying “I hate Chael, but I hate Bisping even more, so WAR Chael!”. This fight will create a lot of fans for Chael. Or people will hate him even more. Which will make Silva/Chael II an even bigger fight. And as of Maia/Weidman, it’s a more interesting fight and it’ll finally prove that Maia is overrated and never deserved to fight for the title in the first place. Oh, and Weidman is awesome. He easily could be the MW champ to take over Anderson Silva’s reign when he retires.
Shnak - January 18, 2012
Nothing that you said has to do with the actual fight. The prefight back and forth should be great, much better then against Munoz. But Munoz has tools to make it an interesting fight. Bisping (who I like) doesnt have anything Chael cant handle.
sitnam90 - January 18, 2012
Good for Chael
To get another title shot, he gets to face back to back fighters not known for their ground game in a state outside of the one where he gets busted for juice. He deserves it; I hope he wins.
Farthammer - January 17, 2012
This should be a great fight. Sonnen’s Wrestling vs Bisping stand up and scrambles. Should be fun. Plus its Sonnen vs Bisping.
vivero - January 17, 2012
lol
Totally agree, in fact you only need to say Sonnen vs Bisping. All the rest is just fluff!
nicey - January 17, 2012
I love Chael and, on behalf of Brits everywhere, I can’t wait for him to grind Bisping to mincemeat.
Terra17 - January 18, 2012
Grapplefuck meets Punches-in-bunches
Can’t believe I’m the only one not excited for this fight. Bisping manages to fuck up nearly everyone’s game plans by being such a fucking spazz, and Sonnen lacks KO power, so I see a very intense cardio game of running around the ring and throwing a lot of fakes.
Wake me up for the Main Event.
RobtWeaver - January 18, 2012
Sonnen could catch a knee or dive into one going for a takedown. He's one dimensional, his luck can't last.
I realise he’s very good at what he does but I can’t see it ALWAYS working. Sure the whole triangle weakness is well known. I’m just surprised people see him as a lock for every fight since facing Anderson. I think perhaps fans WANT to see him as the clear winner because they can’t get enough of his smack talk.
UncleMax - January 18, 2012
Your really underrating Sonnen
He is a capable kickboxer, he outstruck Okami whenever he wasnt diving for the takedown.
sitnam90 - January 18, 2012
That's a shame, I was really looking forwad to Maia-Bisping.
