When "King Mo" Muhammed Lawal tested positive for steroids after his fight against Lorenz Larkin at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine it seemed to come out of nowhere for everyone involved. While Lawal is planning to appeal the test, his manager, Mike Kogan, has reiterated that they don't understand the positive test but does recall a non-anabolic injection.
"Both of us are very surprised by these results," Kogan told USA TODAY. "Neither of us has ever heard of this drug. ... We honestly have no clue where this came from."
Other than food and drink, the only substances that Lawal takes on a regular basis are iron supplements, Kogan said. When Lawal had fluid drained from his knee a few weeks before the bout, he did receive an injection of a non-anabolic steroid, Kogan said.
Despite the appeal it would be unexpected for the "B" sample to provide a different result than the positive received on the "A" sample.

unrelated but this kid smeared shit all over the walls in my high school
the jewish conquistador - January 18, 2012
you must have not gone to a public high school
Smeared shit on the walls of a stall was disturbingly common. Id say, maybe once a month.
Someone took a dump in the urinal… That was just the once. Ah… Public high school. Tomorrow’s future (inmates)
Ricardo Arguello - January 18, 2012 via mobile
that’s not so bad. just drink enough water and you can dissolve the turd with your piss.
it’s the manly thing to do.
but yeah, it has more to do with bad districts than just the fact that it’s a public school.
you just had a bunch of assholes in your school.

I’ve walked in on a kid taking a dump in the sink at school. He greeted me when I walked in, didn’t even bat an eye.

I'd really like to see someone just own up to it
I’m not bothered so much by the idea that he used a PED, I think PEDs are rather widespread in all of sports.
What bugs me is the way all these athletes insult the intelligence of their fans with constant denials and excuses. Just admit it so we can all move on.
Worldisart - January 18, 2012
I dunno, look at Josh Barnett: denies every positive test, yet we still want to see him fight and he’s STILL considered one of the best HWs in the world without fighting top ten competition. Not saying I agree with it but it just goes to show that denial works sometimes. Sure a lot of people think he’s a joke, but there are (sadly) a lot of people that actually believe him as well. Once you’ve admitted it there can be no debate by anyone, ever.
Machiel Van - January 18, 2012
Yup.
Lying is the tried and tested tactic in these cases. No matter how outrageously implausible, it gives an athlete plausible deniability, and lets them start rehabbing their image.
Dave Strummer - January 18, 2012
Sylvia and Leben owned up to it from what I recall
menckenstein - January 18, 2012
Leben certainly did. so did Thiago Silva. it took him a while, but he did the right thing in the end. i don’t remember if Sylvia admitted it or not.
Victor Rodriguez - January 18, 2012
sylvia did
RandyCouture'sDivorceLawyer - January 18, 2012 via mobile
You don't get anything for admitting it
A good example is Sherk and Franca (and I know Franca is a piece of shit but that’s not important). They both used an illegal PED. Sherk denied it repeatedly, got his punishment reduced to 6 months, and got a title shot his first fight back. Franca owned up to it and he did the full year and got kicked out of the UFC.
And Thiago Silva is a more recent example. He told the truth and got a year. Chael Sonnen made up the most ridiculous lie ever and got six months. There’s just no reason to ever tell the truth.
crazybones - January 18, 2012
In defence of Sherk
There were all kinds of fishy things involved in his testing procedure.
In any event, my opinion is that lame half baked excuses with no evidence to back them up, make you lose big time in the court of public opinion.
Worldisart - January 18, 2012
Thank you
I have to remind people of the Sherk situation constantly. All people see is the suspension. But yes, in 99% of cases, these guys are, in fact, guilty. How often do you hear of a friend “accidentally” testing positive for marijuana when applying for a job? Like someone put some into their mac and cheese?
Charles Awad - January 18, 2012
FYI
They actually do make marijuana mac n cheese.
eyeIess - January 19, 2012
he had lots of excuses, but the point stands, especially in ca. look at toney.
Phildo - January 18, 2012 via Android app
Sherk was basically acquitted on account of a WATER SAMPLE testing positive
He should have gotten off completely. Read up, folks. This shit should be common knowledge.
Charles Awad - January 18, 2012
Actually...
…I remember someone breaking down the story in great detail in one of the threads here and it seemed very clear, that Sherks argument holds little more water than Chaels. Can’t for the life of me remember who that was. Maybe he’s still around and can repost…
KGNLuc - January 18, 2012
You mean the story about how the CSAC completely mishandled the chain of custody of his sample and how their testing methods were proved to be so flawed that water, WATER!, tested positive?
Worldisart - January 18, 2012
Doesn't register, dude
People want to believe what they want to believe. Sherk “looks” like he does roids, so people just wanted any affirmation of their suspicions.
Charles Awad - January 18, 2012
I know
A vaguely remembered post from some article ages ago holds more weight with him than readily available facts.
Worldisart - January 18, 2012

Mo used to be a licensed MMA fighter
Then he took a non-anabolic steroid injection to the knee

Yeah ok that injection contained one of the best Roids used for being able to bulk mussle why you are cutting weigh
Shocbomb - January 18, 2012
It's actually one that let's you gain strength without adding mass
Which is why it’s used as a cutting steroid.
Matthew Roth - January 18, 2012
Masteron drostanolone propionate from what I have read gives somone 2 huge advantages during the cutting phase. When caloric intake is drastically lowered. AKA you can’t eat it helps you gain like you said Matt strength also it enhances muscle gain without excessive water retention.
Also from what I read this is not some run of the mill steroid your local gym rat will sell you,It has not been manufactured in over 2 decades and most of the the stuff out there has been cooked up buy black market chemist.
Shocbomb - January 18, 2012
if thats the case I don’t know how Mo or Kogan can say it possibly showed up in anything else he was using or that something other then the drug itself would make a false positive.
Shocbomb - January 18, 2012
not been manufactured for two decades? that's some drago level shit that!
UncleMax - January 18, 2012 via Android app
exactly what I was thinking about Drago when reading about it. like I said its not your typcial PED the buffed up guido Gym Rat with a mullet sells out of the locker room at your local Golds Gym now, this is some real real expenisve stuff and hard to find becasue it has to be made buy some black market chemist it is not produced anymore for medical useage.
Shocbomb - January 19, 2012
Cortical Steroids and Anabolic Steroids
are COMPLETELY different. There is no way a licensed doctor in the united states would just happen to mix the two up. Masteron isn’t a medical steroid anyways, it’s not something the doctor is going to have laying around his office. This excuse is the worst one I’ve heard yet. I have zero problem with hormone therapies, it’s not the evil substance the government has tried to make us believe. What I don’t like is these ridiculous excuses. Just say I’m sorry and leave it at that.

Dave Strummer - January 19, 2012
yup exactly like I wrote above, I think they are just trying to pull the poll over fans eyes with this statement. anyone who looks up info about this steroid will know there response is utter and I have no other way to say this bull shit
Shocbomb - January 18, 2012
I’d like to know how many fighters have successfully appealed a steroid accusation? Seems like every fighter that gets caught goes through this pointless process of denial and appeal only to ultimately end up serving the suspension then still deny ever taking steroids afterward.
Dr. Octagon - January 18, 2012
It's a PR maneuver
If they don’t appeal, that would be seen as admission of guilt by the public. So they “fight back” to show they are just innocent people getting played by the man!
KGNLuc - January 18, 2012
PR and also to reduce the sentence
Silvia, Chael, Leben etc all got there suspensions reduced from 1 year to 6 months after appearing in front of the commission.
Genki Sudo's Choreographer - January 18, 2012
I think everyone who appeals in California gets a reduced sentence.

Fucking great.
I was rooting for Mo simply for the fact that if he won the belt, he might be closer to getting into the UFC and challenging Jones. Now that dream is out the window and to make matters worse, the strikeforce light heavyweight division is even murkier. Way to go, Mo!
kreally - January 18, 2012
King Mo knows everything
Until he doesn’t know anything.
Charles Awad - January 18, 2012
if this non-anabolic steroid were a cortisone shot or some shit like that it would be a different story, but this explanation doesn’t cut it.
Victor Rodriguez - January 18, 2012
I can’t wait for Mo to take to Twitter to bash the fans.
Telling us we are a bunch of no nothing, know at alls and it’s all our fault that he pissed hot
He’ll probably find some way to blame Kim Winslow as well for this one…..
jack knight starman - January 18, 2012
You have to admit, it’s a little funny that you happen to write “no nothing” while complaining about King Mo thinking you’re stupid. It doesn’t help matters that you used “know” literally a word later.
Lucas2 - January 18, 2012
I really don't know if this comment is a bash towards me or not, however....
My comment was made in jest….
If you can’t see that, what does that say about yourself?
Just sayin"……..
jack knight starman - January 19, 2012
I wouldn’t call it a “bash” towards you, rather I was simply pointing out that it was rather ironic that, while you were “bashing” King Mo for thinking so many fans are stupid, you happen to out yourself as one of those idiots by using “no” when the correct word was “know.” Now, you may not be one of said mouth-breathers, but you sure aren’t providing much evidence to the contrary.
Just sayin…
Lucas2 - January 19, 2012
I looked up this steroid
its allegedly for the wealthy or major athletes that can afford it because it is hard to get the real stuff on the streets.
its used for the treatment of breast cancers in conjunction with peroxitine or something like that, that is a 2D6 inhibitor.
These two steroids are totally unrealated that he is referring too.
You dont pop for steroids when you take an anti-inflammatory steroids.
F.U.B.A.R - January 18, 2012
yup and from all the stuff I read it was made buy pharmaceutical companies in Europe only and production on the drug was stoped over 20 years ago, Most of the samples now are from illegal chemist cooking up the drug.
Shocbomb - January 18, 2012
I dont remember Mo taking steroids, but he ate a poppy seed bagel before the pissed, that must be it.
SOLVED!
F.U.B.A.R - January 18, 2012
Both of his last fights should be ruled no contest. The Larken fight naturally for the positive test and the Gracie fight because of the illegal head butt. Both guy should still be riding undefeated streaks.
memitim - January 18, 2012 via mobile
I think there would be a case for the No-Contest for Gracie if
Gracie was actually dropped by the headbutt like Sermerzier was. But Gracie suffered the headbutt…and honestly, it’s hard to say how ‘rocked’ or ‘stunned’ he really was…it happened, and we know it didn’t hurt enough for him to lose his footing.
The sort of awkward break/movement can definitely be attributed to the fact that he isn’t the best striker in the world. But EITHER way, the headbutt clearly wasn’t devestating….
I’m sure perhaps if Gracie felt that way, he would have looked into an appeal himself.
Chris Groves - January 18, 2012
Ive looked at all the gifs from all different angles and tho we can’t tell how damaging the headbutt was it certainly setup the next punch because Roger was stunned and dropped his guard. Otherwise, that punch doesn’t land where and how it did. I hope he is working on an appeal and maybe gets some help with Zuffa now.
memitim - January 18, 2012 via mobile
Consdering how long it's been
I sincerely doubt he is working on an appeal.
Chris Groves - January 19, 2012
OK Barry Bonds....
I feel like I’m reading the testimony for Barry Bonds. “I wasnt aware it was a steroid”. “I didn’t know what was being injected in me”. What a bunch of BS, if you are being injected with a substance, wouldn’t you want to know exactly what the hell it is. You just got caught, at least Thiago Silva was a man and admitted it.
evenflow10 - January 18, 2012
Wait, hold up. Mike Kogan is Mo’s manager? Dear God. Wow I like him even less now.
exzacht - January 18, 2012 via mobile
So have they made the Larkin loss a No-Contest yet?
Chris Groves - January 18, 2012
probably won’t do it until the B sample comes back, or possibly when the appeal is finished.
In other sports, you aren’t even supposed to find out about the positive test until the B sample comes back positive.
Phildo - January 18, 2012
So have they made the Larkin loss a No-Contest yet?
