Pat Barry is not getting an easy fight tomorrow night when he steps into the cage with Christian Morecraft at UFC on FX 1. Barry sits as a slight favorite right now (as high as -175) but he is going to need to be able to keep the fight on the feet, and avoid any sort of ground battle. But Barry tells MMA Weekly that his ground game is no longer the issue it once was in a new video:
From the video (transcription via MMA Mania):
Wrestling and jiu-jitsu and strength are my weakness when it comes to fighting. Punching and kicking can always get better, but it's the wrestling and grappling and what not, that's my Achilles heel. [DeathClutch] is a gym that's filled with gigantic wrestlers who all grapple, Comprido is the jiu-jitsu coach. They're all stronger than I am, they're all taller than I am, which is everyone I fight. I'm the smallest guy in the room. This is what I need to be surrounded by. The world doesn't know it yet, but [I've gained] a tremendous amount of growth in my wrestling and my jiu-jitsu and my poise while being on my back. Strength, just all around confidence, tremendous amounts. The only problem is that with all that growth and with all that gain, you now have to actually do it live.

Yes you actually have to do that live Barry and please submit morecraft it would be my day of lucky

I’ll believe it when I see it.
fbihop - January 19, 2012
Tremendous growth is a relative term. Perhaps Barry learned how to shrimp and went “HOLY FUCKING SHIT WHAT A LEAP”
Derek Suboticki - January 19, 2012
EBI!
SanFranpsycho - January 19, 2012
If he learned how to properly shrimp then I’m actually amazed at his progress.

Don’t f’n lie to me Barry… I have you picked right now in the civil war and MDH will beat me with a sock full of soap if our team gets last again.
Patrick Tenney - January 19, 2012
MDH?
Do you mean Earl Montclair?
Full Mount - January 19, 2012
Yes, the Duke of Montclair.
Patrick Tenney - January 19, 2012
The Earl of Éclair Earl Montclair

Cory Braiterman - January 19, 2012
I’m kind of surprised that DeathClutch still exists.
Derek Suboticki - January 19, 2012
They were going to turn it into a YMCA but the Slayer logo on the wall kind of soured the deal.
menckenstein - January 19, 2012
You implying that a Slayer logo is undesirable to anyone is just, psh... I don't even know.
SanFranpsycho - January 19, 2012
you think Lesnar completely stopped training?
how much is there to do in nowhereville, minnesota?
lukustra - January 19, 2012
I'm pretty sure
Brock would be content to do just hunt for the rest of his life.
av1o3 - January 19, 2012
Well
Why do you think he’s raising wild athletes in his backyard?
Charles Awad - January 19, 2012
I'm intrigued to see what happens with the Deathclutch training facility now that Brock has left.
As far as I understood, it wasn’t a gym that was stacked full of up-and-coming fighters. Most of the guys were brought in simply to help Brock train.
I suspect he’s not training right now, now has the desire too.

Not hard to improve when you had nothing to begin with.

Andy Anderson - January 19, 2012
I never thought that I'd hear the words "Pat Barry" and "tremendous growth" outside of a YouTube skit involving HD in his granny panties.
SanFranpsycho - January 19, 2012
dont do it HD..dont start to sound like vera saying he is evolving and all that
and then looses and next fight HD will say “im going back to my roots..pure kickboxing”
gxc - January 19, 2012
Vera has regressed ever since UFC 77 in my opinion.
Machiel Van - January 19, 2012
Pat Barry is awesome. When his fighting career is over he should be a color commentator for UFC. Joe Rogan and Pat Barry.

Would you describe them as, CYNICAL?
Sugel Mendoza - January 19, 2012
Damon Martin really ought to have been a music journalist.
Machiel Van - January 19, 2012
Morecraft will get beat up on the feet and the minute he goes for a takedown, he’ll submit Barry with ease.
andrew861 - January 19, 2012
People forget he did get Mitrione on the ground a couple of times
But he was completely exhausted after taking such an ass kicking. Morecraft is fairly strong.
SSreporters - January 19, 2012
I don't give a fuck I like HD...
RECE ROCK - January 19, 2012
I dont feel too good about this card
I migh end up with like a 20-30 in points :(
Tats16 - January 19, 2012
I REALLY just hope he beats Morecraft
I mean, it’s no joke that Barry is on thin ice with the promotion. He is 3-4 in the UFC…he NEEDS this win to stick around.
At this point it’s one fight at a time…he has to manage to go on a win STREAK, not just get a win…but he has to win a few in a row to sort of get some insurance with the company so that the next time he loses he won’t get cut.
If he wins this one, then loses his next fight…he is still probably done.
Chris Groves - January 19, 2012
If by done you mean "gets another three chances", then yes
They love Barry. If he wins, he’s good for at least one, probably two or three more losses.
KGNLuc - January 19, 2012
On one hand, Barry's just not very good at MMA
On the other, the dude was living out of his car before the Hardonk fight. It’s hard not to root for him personally, but after his last two fights I’ve given up on him being a UFC mainstay.
SSreporters - January 19, 2012
sad but true
He needs the win so we can even talk about him being a “decent” HW gatekeeper.
squaresphere - January 19, 2012
just found this, had to post it....
darkotto23 - January 19, 2012
Barry would be easier to like
if he didn’t fight so poorly.
chillnnsht - January 19, 2012
I really love Barry
But it gets harder by the day to defend his abilities. Hope he can win this one in devastating fashion.
Charles Awad - January 19, 2012
HD nuthugger here
So yeah, I’m definitely hoping for a bonus fight for Barry.
That said, I think Pat has watched Eddie Murphy’s “Raw” way too many times. Your eyes are going to get stuck like that, Pat.
RobtWeaver - January 19, 2012
... and this officially cements HD losing by sub
