Tomorrow night, Pat Barry steps into the Octagon for the 8th time as he faces Christian Morecraft on the UFC on FX show. Barry has had his ups and downs in the UFC, putting together a 3-4 record during his 3 year run with the company, so he is no stranger to adversity. But this time, he comes in on back to back loses, facing a tough 7-2 fighter in Morecraft. With a potential third straight loss looming, I have to ask - is Pat Barry fighting for his job?

Conventional wisdom says yes. A 6-5 fighter with a 3-5 UFC record and 3 straight loses seems like an obvious candidate for unemployment. But it's not a guarantee by any means. The last time I asked this question it was about Dan Hardy, then on a 3 fight losing streak and heading into a fight with Chris Lytle. General consensus was that Hardy was indeed fighting for his job - but he lost, and he's still here.

Like Hardy, Barry could find himself still employed even after a loss, and for many of the same reasons as Hardy. Both men have big, outgoing personalities, and have used those personalities to stand out from the crowd in their respective divisions. Both men have been in some tremendously entertaining fights - Barry has one Fight of the Night award under his belt (against Antoni Hardonk at UFC 104) and has been in some memorably fun fights with the likes of Mirko Cro Cop, Cheick Kongo, and Stefan Struve. Those two factors - personality and entertaining fights - go a long way. Add in the fact that Heavyweight is a somewhat thin division, and you have good reason to keep Barry around.

But the attribute that most stands in his favor is the same one that benefitted Hardy - potential. In Barry, you see a fighter with a world of potential. He's a K-1 striker, with killer kicks and stand-up skills. And he's been an MMA pro for less than 4 years. It's easy to forget that fact since Barry was fast-tracked to he UFC just 7 months after his MMA debut. This is a fighter with the potential to dominate on the feet who is still learning the game.

Or is he? There are two big knocks on Barry. The first is his lack of a killer instinct. People complained a lot about that after the Joey Beltran and Cro Cop fights, and it was a worthy complaint. Unfortunately for Barry, he showed that killer streak against Kongo, only to be stopped cold by a miraculous comeback. The second criticism is, in my eyes, far more damaging - his inability to develop a ground game. This has been the gap in Barry's game since his 2nd UFC fight, when Tim Hague took him down and effortlessly choked him out. It cost him again versus Cro Cop of all people. But despite these loses, Barry has not added the ground game needed to complement his stand-up.

That could change against Morecraft. Until now, Barry has been training under Duke Roufus - a fantastic stand-up coach, but perhaps not the most well-rounded. Now, he is training at DeathClutch, and has gone on record stating that his ground game is vastly improved. If it has, it will potentially close this gap in his game and allow Barry to more fully reach his potential.

And that may be necessary. Because while Hardy and Barry have many similarities, they also have some key differences that work against Barry. Barry is not a fighter who can be used to draw in a foreign market, and he's not a former #1 contender whose name can be used to build up another fighter. Those factors kept Hardy alive, and with their absence, a Barry loss could indeed mean the end of his UFC tenure.

If that happens, perhaps it will be the motivation Barry needs to tune up that ground game, find that killer instinct, and claw his way back to the UFC. If not, then Friday night could be the last time we see HD set foot in the Octagon.

He would be

but he wont lose so it’s w/e.

You say that with such certainty

As if he had the superlative MMA record to promise this

Lets get real here, Pat Barry is a failed prospect. He was supposed to be a MAJOR asset to the HW division, and now he’s in Brandon Vera land. Being a Pat Barry fan myself, I dont find him entertaining and I don’t find him even slightly humorous, because I had a lot of hope in this guy and he should be miles ahead of where he is right now in his career. He’s disappointed me every time

I have no idea where "Pat Barry was supposed to be a MAJOR asset to HW"

Especially since he was swiftly choked out by Tim Hague in his 2nd UFC fight

Eh

He had a lot of hype (K-1 LEVEL STRIKING!!!!!!!!!), and given the lack of depth, there was some thought that he could be a contender. He wasn’t a top prospect like Cain, but people were excited.

Quick

list the active UFC HWs that have any personality.

…How long did that take you?

No chance they cut HD, unless he goes out there and tries to wrestle for 15 minutes.

Christian Morecraft suck tho...
*sucks
Yes he does

But it’s a toss-up for who sucks more. Barry has better stand-up but Morecraft was pounding the tar out of Stefan Struve before he gassed.

Who doesn't pound the tar out of Struve these days?
Pat Barry.

The UFC absolutely needs to set-up Mighty Mouse vs. Stefan Struve.

I'm guessing you've seen this?

Kick him in the balls! Chop him down to size.
No S necessary

“Christian Morecraft suck” is sufficient…he suck…he suck at fight. Brazilians will understand.

3 fights outside of UFC totaling 3 mins and he was supposed to come in and be a contender ??

Naaaaah…. Let’s be serious the guy is still green to a lot of aspects of the sport.

dont find him entertaining?

First of, im not sure how you consider yourself a pat fan. aside from the stupidity of that statment, I hope youre talking about his granny panty pix as not entertaining and not his fights as almost every single one of his fights have been spactacular especially his last 3.

he totally should be

but theres absolutely no chance he gets cut, hes a hw and hes always good for an entertaining fight

if your a hw and your fights dont suck, it really doesnt matter if your winning or losing since zuffa wants to see entertaining hw fights

Just a small gripe:

At one point, you say Barry has a 3-4 UFC record, and then switch to 3-5. It’s 3-4.

He’s assuming Barry lost there, and making a case that with that now-3 and 5 record, it puts him in danger.

If Barry loses, they'll just match him up with Chad Griggs

He loses that fight and he’s gone.

if he wins

Chad Griggs

So Chad Griggs either way, like when Vitor vs Wandy was made?

Win or lose, HD is here to stay!

That said, he is skating on the thinnest ice possible. Hardy getting a reprieve was a miracle that Barry shouldn’t bank on happening to him.

I don't know...

Barry sure likes to WAR…

I dunno, Steve Cantwell has 4 straight losses

And he’s still getting another fight in Japan…

Yeah.

I don’t understand that at all.

Well

Steve Cantwell isn’t fighting on televised maincards either.

That shit with Dan Hardy is unbelievable.

He fought for a title though. Cantwell hasn’t really done anything. He damn well better beat Fukuda if he’s to stick around.

And it's not like Cantwell is exciting like Barry either

Not even Keith Jardine got a fifth fight after four losses to Rampage, Thiago Silva, Ryan Bader and Matt Hammil. Hell, Houston Alexander only had 3 straight losses before getting cut then being brought back to fight Kimbo Slice. Does Cantwell have some dirt on Joe Silva or something?

And he only got that title shot because the UFC gave him as easy a path as possible
He got the title shot

Because he was the best option at the time. He beat Mike Swick who was the guy the UFC was actually grooming for the title shot, not Dan Hardy. After that Hardy was the only option they had at the time.

Don’t twist history into some big conspiracy to promote Hardy because he’s British.

It's easy to call conspiracy

Because Hardy vs. Swick was a “#1 contender” bout on a UK card. And they stubbornly keep him in the UFC because of his personality.

I seriously don’t remember them pushing Swick for a title shot. Care to elaborate? I remember the Burkman fight being his WW debut and the Goulet KO but not much else.

The Hardy\Swick fight was billed as a title eliminator for Swick

He was pushed as the number one contender if he beat Hardy and the consensus across the board was he was going to beat the tar out of him. If Swick had have won he would be on a five fight streak with notable wins over Hardy, Davis and Ben Saunders. Swick wouldn’t have been ideal however at that point in time he was the best option.

When Hardy beat Swick, the UFC had no other options for a title contender. GSP had already been on a lengthy layoff after injuring himself at UFC 100 and there was no way the UFC was going to shelf him any longer than they had to. Dan Hardy was the best option they had available at that point in time. Where’s the conspiracy?

If he losers to morecraft, he deserves to be cut. No doubt about it. I’m with Rollo though. He shouldn’t lose this.

First!

For mentioning Dan Hardy still has a job.

But after the Fight its is His UFC career that will Rest in Piece!!!

Wanna do it?
only on the symbol, it has to mean something
lol.... I meant when Undertaker said that to a passing Brock during a Helwani interview after a fight... lol forget it.
He's fighting in the wrong

weight class. He is a light heavy weight fighting in the heavy weight division. I saw an interview where he said he knows he could cut to 205 but he is the same size as Fedor so if Fedor didn’t have to he didn’t either. I can’t find the logic in that argument. With my career on the line I think it would be worth going on a diet. I don’t think anyone could argue that he would have a much better shot at 205 or that he could make the division with ease. Going into every fight with a huge size disadvantage the cards are already stacked against you. This is the UFC, you need every advantage you can get.

He'd get killed at LHW

By pretty much the entire UFC top 20

He is bigger than Fedor.

With his height, I can see him possibly cutting to 205. The thing is though is that he has weighed in the 240’s and 250’s before, and not particularly looking out of shape. He also has tree trunks for legs and is just a naturally muscular/thick guy, so the cut may be difficult for him.

sick of seeing white belts in the ufc ..
hope he doesnt get cut even if he loses. HW is too thin

plus Barry has been snake bitten by bad luck getting caught by Hague, breaking his arm and leg against Cro Cop and was demolishing Kongo prior to the hail mary KO

At some point you're not snakebitten

You just aren’t good. Tim Hague never “caught him”, he should’ve finished Cro-Cop long before he broke his hands and foot but since he has no ground-and-pound ability he never even tried, and I guess I can give you the Kongo fight but he had his hands down the entire time.

Deathcluch is still around? Does Brock still train?

I'm not sure

As far as I know, it’s his gym and his brand, so maybe he just owns it?

Logged in to say hopefully so

His lame attempts at humor and repeated “bro hugs” in the cage make me not so much a fan. That and the half-assed nickname “HD”.

I don’t think he gets cut if he loses. I mean the guy is still a bit of a rookie so I think he deserves another chance. Depends how he loses as well. If he gets taken down and TKOd in the first round then maybe he gets cut but if its a tough decision loss then maybe not

He'll get cut if he loses

but I don’t think he will. Too fast for Morecraft.

There's no way they are cutting a K-1 level fighter from the UFC

…and boom goes the dynamite

I dont like his antics but I would like to see him stay. Maybe focus more on being a better MMA fighter than being the funniest guy in the UFC

is ‘pat barry’ an anagram of ‘barn cowpat’. I bet the deathclutch training barn is surrounded by steaming midwestern cowpats some of which came directly from brock lesnar.

I want barry to win only because warcraft looks like he sits on shampoo bottles in his spare time. but at this point anything is possible with barry.

"warcraft looks like he sits on shampoo bottles in his spare time."

What does that even mean?

with a name like groves

how can you not know

Groves, I don't know what it means either, but I think I agree with him out of fear.
On one hand...

I’m pretty sure that’s fighter bashing…

On the other, I’m not entirely sure what it means, but it sounds really bad.

I will attempt to locate an appropriate gif of a cat or one of those shady american entertainers mid gasp looping with "funny text" on it to aid in communicating my thoughts, one moment..

The UFC brass/management seems to like Pat Barry, so even with a loss to Morecraft, I can see him staying in the UFC. Win or lose, he is part of some great moments in the UFC. The comebacks from CroCop and Kongo, and then there is that powerbomb he did on Struve, but of course, he lost those fights. Cool things happen, win or lose, when Pat Barry fights in the Octagon.

yes he'll probably be cut and i blame OVERREEM!

Why Overreem? Why talk about “K1-level striking” in relation to Barry when they can now use “K1 Champion Level Striking” with Alistar :3

He'll only get cut if he wears his tighty whities into the cage.
He won't be cut for losing to Morecraft.

If he’s cut after this fight it would be because he lost AND because he lost in an unentertaning way.
