Jim Miller defeats Melvin Guillard by rear naked choke. The submission came at 2:04 in the first round.
It was a clash of styles, the 'work horse' vs the 'athlete'. Jim Miller has made a reputation as an absurdly tough fighter who is able to grit his way through any situation and find a way to win. He did just that in his fight tonight with Melvin Guillard. Guillard opened up throwing power shots that landed multiples to Miller's grill piece. One of the punches put Miller down and Guillard looked to finish the fight.
Melvin made the mistake of attempting a flying knee that opened him up for a takedown. Miller was quick to take Melvin's back as Guillard stood up and sunk in a rear naked choke on the way down. Guillard attempted to fight hands but was eventually fell to the submission.
Miller returns to the win column with this huge submission win. Both fighters were considered top contenders at lightweight in 2011 before picking up surprising losses. Guillard is now on a two fight losing streak. It was his first fight away from Greg Jackson's camp.

I would love love love for this to happen

I am amazed
at how many people thought Guillard was going to win this fight. This type of failure is the story of his career.
MrPants - January 20, 2012
It wasn't horrible
He was devastating Miller before that. The flying knees were dumb, but what can you do?
He should train with the scrap pack.
halitosis - January 20, 2012 via mobile
He was landing on Lauzon before he got caught
He was landing on Diaz before he dove head first into a guillotine
The guy has got a permanent mental block that prevents him from being anything more than a 11-15 level LW.
SSreporters - January 20, 2012
He's a work in progress
He still has time. A year to put it all together, and Guillard can be a new beast by 2013.
Leaving Jackson’s was a bad idea. He should commit himself to learning jiu jitsu and better balance. Honestly, if there’s anything he can really benefit from, it would be yoga. I know that sounds stupid, but it would calm him and focus him, in addition to making him a more limber ground fighter.
He should find a reputable jits gym and get to work asap, and see a good sports psychologist. And take up yoga.
halitosis - January 20, 2012 via mobile
In 2013
He will go on another tear. Then get an increase in competition. And then get RNCed again.
MrPants - January 20, 2012
I doubt his training camp is going to make that much of a difference at this point
As long as he is getting quality sparring partners at Imperial.
discoandherpes - January 20, 2012
He is 29. He’s not exactly a spring chicken.
TheLastEmpress - January 21, 2012
Still young.
discoandherpes - January 21, 2012
Exactly
And Miller has never been KOed.
BTW, am I the only person who saw your name and wondered about your association with Heinrich Himmler?
MrPants - January 20, 2012
You probably are the only person who even mentioned my name and made that reference
And no, it’s not what you think! ;)

Without a Doubt, We'll See It in a Judo Chop
Though it may be the first, at least to my memory, reverse Judo Chop. Guillard losing this fight can be directly correlated to his ineffective attempt to close guard and trap Miller’s leg before the transition to full mount. For me, this fight was proof that Guillard has peaked as a fighter. His inability to stick with camps may be indicative of his ability to grasp the finer points of the sport, and not so much a willing to learn more. Because clearly, despite the years of training he’s accumulated, he was inable to execute one of the most basic aspects of grappling.
GogoPlatter - January 20, 2012
Well if this isnt racist i dont know what is
PrivateBox - January 20, 2012
That was so predictable. I’m up 35 cents since I started betting again. I should make a 10 fight parlay with that 35 cents haha.
Tim Bernier - January 20, 2012
I'm no longer interested in Melvin Guillard's development
To the point where I don’t even care if he’s on the UFC roster. He seriously has zero fight IQ against top-level fighters…and I guess I’ll lump Lauzon in there as top-level. I said in the show thread that the only difference between Melvin Guillard and Anthony Johnson is that Melvin makes weight.
Jim Miller vs. Evan Dunham PLZ. I love the Miller Brothers and wish them UFC immunity. Jim is still a top contender and his BJJ is just sick.
SSreporters - January 20, 2012
Melvin
must not have been watching the Josh Neer Bang Ludwig fight hahah
nickrodamous - January 20, 2012
He was probably watching the Melvin Guillard marathon
Featuring his submission loss to Josh Neer
SSreporters - January 20, 2012
Hahaha.
and his submission loss to. Nate Diaz,Joe Lauzon, Joe Stevenson. etc. etc.
nickrodamous - January 20, 2012
Miller vs Maynard would be nice too.
Pantherhare - January 20, 2012
Guillard is way better than Rumble. Waaaay better. He just has this awful mental block where he completely falls apart after the first 3-4 minutes.
crazybones - January 20, 2012
I remember seeing Guillard butt scooting and using the cage to get back to his feet in previous fights. However, against Miller, Miller just passed his guard with ease starting with full guard. Granted, Miller is a BJJ black belt, but Guillard just looked lost nonetheless on his back.

Best thing about the deal with Fox: Their HD cameras
Chris Hall - January 20, 2012
Isn’t the production still firmly in the UFC-crews hands?
KGNLuc - January 21, 2012
They definitely got HD cameras before the Fox deal

Cory Braiterman - January 20, 2012
Funny.
you know what still pisses me off. He did the exact same thing against Jeremy Stephens and i think he landed maybe one and danced around the entire time yet somehow got the decision.
nickrodamous - January 20, 2012
stick and move, stick and move
That’s all I remember from that fight. And Stephens looking furious that Guillard didn’t just stand in front of him and trade.
Guillard took it pretty easily in my opinion. I was mad he didn’t try to counter some of those ridiculous haymakers Stephens likes to throw.
The Lethal Haze - January 20, 2012
Guillard looks so bad when he tries to last 3 rounds. He seriously has no clue how to pace himself properly.
crazybones - January 20, 2012
I dunno man
I thought that was the only Guillard fight where I saw him pace himself and use fight IQ. He didn’t just stand and bang with Stephens (which could get almost any UFC LW KO’d), he picked his shots and stayed out of danger.
It wasn’t a particularly entertaining fight- I’ll give you that. But I hate Jeremy Stephens, so it was a great fight to me…
The Lethal Haze - January 20, 2012
winning the fight

The Lethal Haze - January 20, 2012
Fake the toe hold go for the knee bar
Awesome stuff. I’ve been trying to add more knee bars to my leg lock game myself.
discoandherpes - January 20, 2012
he actually somewhat paced himself
Hurt Miller a couple of times then he just got caught I guess. You can see on his face he was trying to pace himself and not get too wild but Miller is just better all around.
Frank Lee - January 20, 2012
Watching prime time now.
I can’t wait for Diaz to work Condit then get in Greg Jacksons face that will be hillarious.
nickrodamous - January 20, 2012
I should probably feel bad for melvin.
But all I can do right now is laugh at psychoblack.
kreally - January 20, 2012
I do hope Melvin can turn it around though.
He looked good at first.

If he wasn't so close with Rashad
Id suggest he be Jones’ protege. Jones has a perfect mental game. After Jones/Rashad finally happens maybe the beef will be squashed.
halitosis - January 20, 2012 via mobile
No shit. That's be a good idea to get back with Jackson.
kreally - January 20, 2012
This was the first UFC I’ve ever been to live. It is so different live! Way Better! In the Hilton across from the Bridgestone Arena … sweet walking across the street instead of having to drive (though the 8 hour trek home comes tomorrow)
As for the Jim Miller vs Guillard fight … Melvin looked really fast in person. He also looked really loose and calm. Conversely Miller actually looked pretty pissed off on his walkout (the place erupted when he came out to Bad Moon Rising) as he was snorting and snarling. I thought Miller was going to get flashed KO’d but he weathered the early storm.
I also have to say that even thought I didn’t meet him Dana White is just an awesome dude. He was shaking hands and taking pictures with people for at least 20 minutes before the main event started. Conversely, I saw Anik & Florian when they pulled in front of the arena to the media entrance and I hollered at both of them and asked for a picture (would have taken 2 seconds and made my entire trip even better) but Ken Flo was a little cunt. Screw that guy. Just brushed me off … Anik just followed KenFlo’s lead. Maybe they were late … don’t know. But, if the president of the company is so accomodating you expect that much at least from his employees.
Still it was an amazing experience. Totally worth it.

Jim Miller is one tough s.o.b.
I think he was mentally prepared to handle the first wave of guillards dominance in the stand up game and he weathered it
well done miller,
My pick of guillard was just another bad prediction!

Got one with Miller transitioning from half guard to full mount?
GogoPlatter - January 20, 2012
lemme see.

Melvin should be calmer in scrambles
And he should’ve gone balls to the wall to finish Miller.

The thing I loved the most is how little space Miller gave Guillard after being knocked down, stuck to him like flypaper

I expected this
Guillard’s badass but he’s reckless and wild
That got him choked in his last fight against a lesser LW and then he tries the same shit again against a top 5 calibre LW
i picked miller by choke but wasnt sure when
