Portal TV had a chance to catch up with Anderson Silva and it on a variety of topics. Silva says that he still hasn't recovered from his shoulder injury and is simply doing enough working out to stay in shape. But, he also said that he doesn't believe that there is a Brazilian fighter who can beat Jon Jones right now.
Here's the video:
Translated quote (via Tom Mendes):
Jon Jones is having a good phase, he's improving a lot. He's getting more and more experienced, he's very young, but he's getting more experienced. He's making his opponents fall into his game. He knows how to use his size very well. There's not much to say about Jon Jones. I don't see any Brazilian in conditions to face him, even more so because Brazilians don't tend to completely study what happens in there, there needs to be more studying done by the Brazilians in that division so that they can understand what really is going on in there. But it's hard for me to say this, because I'm Brazilian and I wish there was a Brazilian with the conditions to beat Jon Jones, but, this is a personal opinion of mine, I don't see anyone in Brazil that can beat him, at least not for now.

I wonder if he considers himself in that group..
HaterSlayer - January 21, 2012
My guess is
He considers himself a middleweight, and is thereby excluding himself from the pool of fighters who might face Jones. Just a guess.
Rich Hansen - January 21, 2012
He must have considered the possibility of the fight
It makes me wonder what he thinks. Clearly you need to have a significant ego to be a world champion, so he must believe he could beat Jones.
unambig - January 22, 2012
Could easily spin it that way
I dont think Anderson would ever risk it for us to find out. Jones and Silva would be a great fight but Silva could get fedor’d and lose his mystique if Jones throws him around and smashes his face with elbows. If Chael could take him down at will so could Jones. On the feet Anderson CAN beat anybody on the ground i think he would be in trouble with Jones
MMA_PITBULL - January 21, 2012
People forget that Chael isn't just a good takedown artist.
The dude is a tough-as-nails insane high pressure junkyard dog in the cage. Watch him fight Marquardt again. He got kneed about as hard as a human being can knee you in the head and then finished his takedown. He was nearly unconscious from an incredibly tight guillotine and got out because his own blood-faucet of a forehead made things slippery. Chael is 100% honey badger in the cage and that’s what makes him such a tough stylistic matchup.
Jones is not the same high paced workhorse of a pressure fighter as Sonnen and doesn’t have the same cardio advantages to employ that style. This isn’t to say that Jones couldn’t or wouldn’t beat Anderson Silva, but the Sonnen comparison is not apt.
pdl - January 21, 2012
Guard Passing
I would agree that Chael’s takedown pressure AND technique are elite. He is super tough and super active BUT he has not shown much technique in guard passing in his career (passing Brian Stann’s is not impressive). When Jones is on top, he takes risks, postures high, gets mounts, finishes with GnP, finishes with front chokes.
To me the Marquardt fight is a good example of how lame Chael is on top. He spent the entire fight defending subs and eating elbows. He looked Messed UP after that fight. He did win but not exactly in a100% honeybadger style.
Id say that Chaels takedown game might be better than Jones (both are good) but once on the ground, Jones has shown a lot more in a much shorter career.
RightTriangle - January 21, 2012
I'm not saying Jones is better or worse than Chael, only that he's not the same.
If Jones has the same positions Chael did for as long as he did in that title fight, Anderson’s head would have been smushed into feijoada. He’s also much lankier and can strike from totally different ranges on the ground. Jones couldn’t keep up the volume punching that Chael does but he won’t need to because he hits so much harder. All I’m saying is that they aren’t similar fighters.
Chael showing liabilities doesn’t mean he’s not totally honey badger. He got bit by the snake and killed it anyways because he was totally relentless. And the only round he didn’t look great in was the third and he still landed more strikes in that round than Nate did the entire fight. He’s just a scrappy dude, and if he gets to half guard then he’s passed far enough to mess you up.
pdl - January 21, 2012
awesome analogy. rec’d
vivero - January 21, 2012
And they forget that all during the fight he will be HIGH on excessive amounts of TRT
unless Anderson pulls a Mayweather and says i’ll fight you with olympic drug testing and no TRT :) would make me very happy
AfroSamurai - January 21, 2012
Because TRT totally gives every user Olympic-level wrestling abilities, tenaciousness to that degree, and the sheer force of will to both impose such a pace upon a fight and maintain that much shit-talking.
Sonnen’s accomplishment cannot be derided simply because of the usage of a single stimulant. It’s like saying that Barnett’s entire career was a failure due to his /multiple/ times popping for various illicit substances, or that Nick Diaz is obviously baked on Marijuana for every single one of his fights which explains his attitude due to the Gomi fight.
Silva’s actually injured this time, Sonnen is coming with far more momentum and without a solid drug-testing commission in Brazil. New MW champ of the world by the end of the year.
Gugabe - January 21, 2012
Obviously he gains no wrestling techniques from being a hormone badger but you seriously don’t think a higher level of testosterone will give him a raised tenaciousness and sheer will to….. ? Come on be serious Gub
Sure his accomplishment can be derided for that single fight because 1. Whats the accomplishment? He lost. 2. Nothing like saying his one fight against Silva vs Barnetts entire career. Barnett didn’t get popped every fight Sonnen got popped for his most important one.
The fact that you would bring up the lack of a solid drug testing commission means you agree to some degree that Fail will be doing some kind of juicing for his upcoming bout with Anderson IF he doesn’t find a way to lose against BIsping
AND STILL MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION…
AfroSamurai - January 22, 2012
Your hormone levels will affect your “force of will” a great deal. Seems bizarre to refute this
Mattyjudo - January 22, 2012 via Android app
btw TRT badger is more appropriate
AfroSamurai - January 21, 2012
hormone badger
slapjaw ackrite - January 21, 2012

be attributed to the juice?

I don't think Silva's legend could get tarnished like Fedor
Because Fedor fought cans. Silva has defeated all comers for 6 years now.
unambig - January 22, 2012
Anderson fought James Irvin, Patrick Cote, and Thales Leites in a row.
That’s about on par with Fedor’s worst three fight streak of opponents (probably Coleman, Hunt, Choi)

AfroSamurai - January 21, 2012
Silva also said
he thinks bj penn is the best fighter alive
flattery is the spiders weapon of choice
AnotherBadPrediction - January 21, 2012
but i do think
it will be very hard to beat jones, but not impossible.
i think who ever beats him with either have to A) put jones on his back and smoother him or B)heavy handed figther who can end the fight quickly
either way, the longer the fight goes on the chances are jones will figure it out on the fly and win.
AnotherBadPrediction - January 21, 2012
I think the only way to beat Jones right now is hit him really hard really early, break his confidence, and move well enough to not get caught.
If Machida were taller so he had less distance to cover and had better head and upper body movement then he could have been that guy. But he doesn’t and he lost.
Anderson’s handspeed, footspeed, and variety of angles he throws from could be serious challenges for Jones. He’s quick and nimble and knows how to move. He’s also small and wouldn’t have his usual strength and athleticism advantages, so if Jones grabs him then it could be a very short night.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… the best man to beat Jones is Alexander Gustafsson. I don’t put much faith in any other opponents, including heavyweights.
pdl - January 21, 2012
That’s a real dark horse pick you got there.
castleeb - January 21, 2012
I don't really think so.
Alexander has the physical attributes, all he needs is to keep working, keep getting better, and especially keep working on hos clinch work and grappling. I think that the only person that can beat Jones is an expert striker with good enough grappling and clinch skills to escape Jones’ clutches. Quite sadly, I think I would respect Jon Jones a whole lot more if he wasn’t so tall and didn’t have such long a reach.
juanchoD - January 22, 2012 via mobile
BJ Penn, during that stretch where Marv had him fully trained with full cardio, probably WAS the best fighter alive, or top 3 at least. Thats always been the great tragedy of BJ Penn.
Hutchy - January 21, 2012
BJ is an all-time great fighter
but I’m not convinced that cardio or lack of Marv was his downfall against either Edgar or Diaz. BJ came out guns blazing against Edgar in the second fight, and Edgar still proved to be too quick.
Even against Diaz, it wasn’t about cardio or heart, as BJ came out in the third with more heart than we’ve ever seen, and he was moving fine. He just took too much damage in the second, which was due to mental mistakes. BJ never should have let himself get cornered like that.
paythefighters - January 22, 2012
At one point he was
that short period when he wasn’t fat BJ.
av1o3 - January 21, 2012
I'm sure he's only talking about 205ers, otherwise he'd be hurting JDS feelings.
menckenstein - January 21, 2012
Unless
Rashad takes the initiative to train with machida, I don’t see any fighter at 205 with the tools to beat jones
Armleglegarm Head - January 21, 2012 via mobile
Me either
Jones will be at the head of the LHW division for a long time like Silva. The man to defeat Jones hasn’t been discovered yet. But it doesn’t take long to get noticed. Jones was obscure in 2008. Now look at him.
unambig - January 22, 2012
I agree with Anderson
Honestly the only fighters I see giving Jones problems are upper tier heavyweights.
The Lethal Haze - January 21, 2012
I agree with him as well. One thing that hurts the Light Heavyweight Division as well is the lack of really strong Brazilian up-and-comers/prospects. I can only think of Davis, Gustaffson, and Bader as top prospects in the division, but after that, there is a big drop off of prospects and up-and-comers skill-wise. I am a huge fan of Fabio Maldonado for example as he is the only up-and-coming Brazilian Light Heavyweight I can think of in the UFC, but I don’t even know if he’ll break into the top ten of the division.
chrisbboy82 - January 21, 2012
How about
Rafael Cavalcante?
vivero - January 21, 2012
Are you making a joke
unambig - January 22, 2012
He's signed with Strikeforce.
chrisbboy82 - January 22, 2012
Bader is still a top prospect? He reach his potential and he will most likely be a gate keeper kind of guy for the rest of his career.
Kefka - January 21, 2012
I think Bader can still improve. I’d like to see more GnP from him.
vivero - January 21, 2012
I also think bader can and will improve. Jones and Bader to me essentially came up together, but Jones of course is a beast and Bader is still developing. I think it’s much to early to say he peaked when really he’s just gone through his first rough patch.
Chris Sarda - January 21, 2012
The UFC really doesn’t position Bader as a gatekeeper, and they treat him like an up-and-comer. I can see Bader still break into the top ten in the future and not be a gatekeeper.
chrisbboy82 - January 22, 2012
Yeah, there's a serious lack of potential contenders from the LHW prospects
Not just Brazilians. And it looks like Maldonado could probably make MW with some better conditioning and a cut monitored by the wrestlers he’s been training with.
If Cormier comes over to the UFC and drops to LHW out of deference to Cain I think he might be able to put up a good fight… even though he’d be giving up alot of height and reach.
The Lethal Haze - January 21, 2012
A Very Humble side of Silva!
I Think Anderson is the Only one with the Tools to Dethrone Jones at 205. Rashad and Hendo have Power in their hands and incredible Wrestling. But Silva has Power in all 4 of his Limbs like no one Else in MMA and the Jiu-Jitsu that both Hendo and Shad Lack.

Getting tired of all this nationalism developing in the sport.
Although it is probably good for the UFC’s growth.
thelastsultan - January 21, 2012
LOL, nationalism and sports go together
Like peanut butter and chocolate.
It’s deeply ingrained into the sport anyway. Going back to the Gracie’s rivalry with judoka like Kimura and probably before that.
Gitaroo_Dude - January 21, 2012
I agree.
But I still don’t like it :)
thelastsultan - January 21, 2012
Same.
IKiIIed007 - January 21, 2012
I'll ask you both why?
It doesn’t bug me as to what or why someone else choses to base their favorites on categories such as nationality, color, race, beliefs, etc. What causes you to dislike this way of thinking?
cager - January 21, 2012
Well
I see nationalism is an irrational allegiance to the country we were born in. Consider that, for instance, in America there are like 310,000,000 of whom any one of us has only met a small, small fraction. Why then should those complete strangers have more value to me than the billions of other people across the globe I’ve never met? It’s entirely possible I have more in common with people thousands of miles away than I do with people the next state over. For instance, if you were to make me choose between saving the lives of everyone who lives in Seattle or saving the lives of everyone who lives in New Zealand… goodbye Seahawks!
Allegiance to family, friends, and one’s own convictions are what makes sense to me. I don’t know if I’ve ever even met anyone from Idaho. Why do I owe them favoritism?
IKiIIed007 - January 21, 2012
Nationalism, its either you have it or not.
vivero - January 21, 2012
I agree, I never understood this mentality, it just comes off a mindless to me.
I think someone that choose to immigrate to the U.S would have a lot more reason to be overly pro American than someone like myself who had no choice in the matter.
Kefka - January 21, 2012
You would prefer Brazilians
chant USA USA USA?
UncleMax - January 21, 2012
It's nice, as a Canadian, to feel a connection to fighters like Jordan Mein, Rory
MacDonald and Gsp. But when I hear the tribal chanting of U-S-A! or “You’re gonna die,” and whatever the Canadian equivalent is, I can’t help but feel a bit disgusted.
I guess I’m just torn, haha.

Palhares probably has a better chance of beating Jones than all but a few HWs and LHWs. Of course he also has a better chance of getting blown out of the water than most HWs and LHWs, but at least he has a tool to beat him. Styles make fights and sometimes the person with the best chance to beat a fighter is also the person with the best chance of getting embarrassed by the same fighter.

Rest that shoulder cupcake
you have a date with sonnen this summer <3
mikeI981j - January 21, 2012
The guy who he tapped out last time they fought while Silva was injured and Sonnen was roided to the gills? I’m sure hes terrified.
Hutchy - January 21, 2012
Make yourself a little pie chart, make the entire circle the 5 round fight. Observe the section of the fight silva was dominant, then the part where sonnen was dominant. Like most I go by stats/trends when placing bets etc… and I would have to throw money on sonnen easily. Now when sonnen wins there will just be another set of excuses, its always one thing or another lol. I like sonnen and admit he lost, silva won and his fans still make excuses for him. But wrap that denial around you like a warm snugly blanket and put your head under it come fight time. =)
mikeI981j - January 21, 2012
the most relevent statistic of that fight
Is that it didn’t go to the judges… How would you represent that in your pie chart?
The Lethal Haze - January 21, 2012
swing and a miss, completely missed the entire perspective. Re-read and try again.
mikeI981j - January 21, 2012
no I get it
I’m just asking you how you would show, you know, the most relevant statistic of the fight, graphically.
The Lethal Haze - January 21, 2012
Like this.
Sugel Mendoza - January 21, 2012
somehow I doubt that would have made it to mikeI981j's pie chart
The Lethal Haze - January 21, 2012
I understand you like silva, i even used to but you won’t convince me to like him. Im actually putting money on the rematch, and using statistics you an see very clearly it would be wise to put your money on sonnen. I hope the people that make the betting lines only watched the last 10 seconds of that fight and hope silva opens up with a ridiculous advantage (he wont but heres to hoping) because I will make good money ; ) You silva fans get too emotionally involved in defending fighters lol. A simple post caused the silva fans to come out XD
mikeI981j - January 21, 2012
I just think the finish should come into the analysis at some point, unless you thought it was a fluke…
I must say, you got some cojones man, putting your money where your mouth is… I know I wouldn’t put any money on this fight more than $20 or a beer at BWW. Even though I don’t like Sonnen, good luck with your bets!
The Lethal Haze - January 21, 2012
I know im going to get more shit for this but that sub was……I dont want to say luck and start a huge thing, but some fans seem to think silva waited until the last minute to finish sonnen and that he was able to finish the fight all along which I think is ridiculous but I have read this quite a few times on BE. come fight time the line won’t be more than a 150 points difference, i honestly hope it opens up at something like silva -400 sonnen +300. Depending what the lines are I may put down a good amount of money. Not betting my house on it or anything but enough to make me very happy if I win _ Silva used to be one of my fighters and got my friends to like him then he started being a dick and I started rooting against him.
mikeI981j - January 21, 2012
Who’s emotionally involved here?
Jabroni - January 21, 2012

mikeI981j - January 21, 2012

jackscagnetty - January 21, 2012
Using his easel and pointer
He could draw a big circle and color the entire thing red, which would essentially signify that Anderson choked out Chael 100% and was 100% the victor.
I don’t seem to remember Chael standing there with his hand raised, but maybe fevered delusion helps with that?
Jabroni - January 21, 2012
You can spin anything anyway you like, if you had never seen the fight and you seen the fight metric you would think it would be insane to put money on silva. I know you guys love him and all but you need to relax a little. Im betting money, you guys are just defending silva, its a bit odd to say silva won so don’t bet against him when the stats are what im using to place my money. But i get where you’re coming from, for someone just wathing the fight you want silva to win, the odds are against him, and again i hope the betting lines do not reflect that.
mikeI981j - January 21, 2012
The whole steroids thing
kind of voids anything he did in that fight except for getting tapped out with like a minute left in the fight.
av1o3 - January 21, 2012
The issue was that he didn't file the proper paperwork.
He could have been in that fight legally with the same stuff running through his body and likely will on the same stuff if there’s a rematch. He’ll just disclose it to the commission this time (which will be the UFC if it’s in Brazil).

Gustafsson’s next fight will really let us know where he stands in the division. Lil Nog has had a lot of really close fights but hasn’t been dominated in his UFC run. If Gustafsson runs through him like he did Vladdy, I’ll put my faith in him being the man to dethrone Jones.

Yes, the nationality really matters alot when it comes to fighting.RolloTomasi - January 21, 2012
Some athletes are more “explosive” and have more natural athleticism according to some.

There isn't a person at LHW of any nationality that could beat Jones period.

So they should just stop having him fight other people then.
Kind of sucks because Jones wants to fight a lot.

I don’t think that was implied by his post.

Jones Almost Invincible!
At this time Bones is almost unbeatable. The only glaring point I see him lacking is one punch ko power. No one fighter has an undestructable chin. The only way Jones gets beat at this time is some1 landing a hail mary strike (ala Serra vs GsP) or gettn injured in a match.

I think he has KO’ed people with one punch.
Kefka - January 21, 2012
Hardly a glaring point
He basically KO’d Machida until his face hit the mat, and then just chose to finish it with one of the most vicious chokes ever instead of follow up strikes. Okay, maybe Machida doesn’t have the toughest chin out there, but there was some decent power behind it.
GSP isn’t known for 1 punch KO power, but he’s still the only one to drop Alves with a punch, and aside from Hardy, has been the top- or second-most damaging fighter for most of his opponents. That’s not much of a weakness for him, and it won’t be for Jones.

I fuckin hate jones. He is a snake, and a creep. But surely everyone can see that Anderson is just kissing his arse because he knows Jon would beat the ahit outta him. If he struggled with Chael I can only imagine how badly JJ would throw him around. Hed have his moments while it lasted, machida style, but he’d get done in, I’m sure of it.
