Anderson Silva Doesn't See Any Brazilian Who Can Beat Jon Jones

Portal TV had a chance to catch up with Anderson Silva and it on a variety of topics. Silva says that he still hasn't recovered from his shoulder injury and is simply doing enough working out to stay in shape. But, he also said that he doesn't believe that there is a Brazilian fighter who can beat Jon Jones right now.

Here's the video:

Translated quote (via Tom Mendes):

Jon Jones is having a good phase, he's improving a lot. He's getting more and more experienced, he's very young, but he's getting more experienced. He's making his opponents fall into his game. He knows how to use his size very well. There's not much to say about Jon Jones. I don't see any Brazilian in conditions to face him, even more so because Brazilians don't tend to completely study what happens in there, there needs to be more studying done by the Brazilians in that division so that they can understand what really is going on in there. But it's hard for me to say this, because I'm Brazilian and I wish there was a Brazilian with the conditions to beat Jon Jones, but, this is a personal opinion of mine, I don't see anyone in Brazil that can beat him, at least not for now.

I wonder if he considers himself in that group..
Could easily spin it that way
I’m Brazilian and I wish there was a Brazilian with the conditions to beat Jon Jones, but, this is a personal opinion of mine, I don’t see anyone in Brazil that can beat him, at least not for now.

I dont think Anderson would ever risk it for us to find out. Jones and Silva would be a great fight but Silva could get fedor’d and lose his mystique if Jones throws him around and smashes his face with elbows. If Chael could take him down at will so could Jones. On the feet Anderson CAN beat anybody on the ground i think he would be in trouble with Jones

I don't think Silva's legend could get tarnished like Fedor

Because Fedor fought cans. Silva has defeated all comers for 6 years now.

Anderson fought James Irvin, Patrick Cote, and Thales Leites in a row.

That’s about on par with Fedor’s worst three fight streak of opponents (probably Coleman, Hunt, Choi)

Brazilians in that division
Can someone translate this whole video

So i can just click cc on the youtube video…?

Silva also said

he thinks bj penn is the best fighter alive

flattery is the spiders weapon of choice

but i do think

it will be very hard to beat jones, but not impossible.

i think who ever beats him with either have to A) put jones on his back and smoother him or B)heavy handed figther who can end the fight quickly

either way, the longer the fight goes on the chances are jones will figure it out on the fly and win.

I think the only way to beat Jones right now is hit him really hard really early, break his confidence, and move well enough to not get caught.

If Machida were taller so he had less distance to cover and had better head and upper body movement then he could have been that guy. But he doesn’t and he lost.
Anderson’s handspeed, footspeed, and variety of angles he throws from could be serious challenges for Jones. He’s quick and nimble and knows how to move. He’s also small and wouldn’t have his usual strength and athleticism advantages, so if Jones grabs him then it could be a very short night.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… the best man to beat Jones is Alexander Gustafsson. I don’t put much faith in any other opponents, including heavyweights.

That’s a real dark horse pick you got there.

I don't really think so.

Alexander has the physical attributes, all he needs is to keep working, keep getting better, and especially keep working on hos clinch work and grappling. I think that the only person that can beat Jones is an expert striker with good enough grappling and clinch skills to escape Jones’ clutches. Quite sadly, I think I would respect Jon Jones a whole lot more if he wasn’t so tall and didn’t have such long a reach.

BJ Penn, during that stretch where Marv had him fully trained with full cardio, probably WAS the best fighter alive, or top 3 at least. Thats always been the great tragedy of BJ Penn.

BJ is an all-time great fighter

but I’m not convinced that cardio or lack of Marv was his downfall against either Edgar or Diaz. BJ came out guns blazing against Edgar in the second fight, and Edgar still proved to be too quick.

Even against Diaz, it wasn’t about cardio or heart, as BJ came out in the third with more heart than we’ve ever seen, and he was moving fine. He just took too much damage in the second, which was due to mental mistakes. BJ never should have let himself get cornered like that.

At one point he was

that short period when he wasn’t fat BJ.

I'm sure he's only talking about 205ers, otherwise he'd be hurting JDS feelings.
Unless

Rashad takes the initiative to train with machida, I don’t see any fighter at 205 with the tools to beat jones

Me either

Jones will be at the head of the LHW division for a long time like Silva. The man to defeat Jones hasn’t been discovered yet. But it doesn’t take long to get noticed. Jones was obscure in 2008. Now look at him.

I agree with Anderson

Honestly the only fighters I see giving Jones problems are upper tier heavyweights.

I agree with him as well. One thing that hurts the Light Heavyweight Division as well is the lack of really strong Brazilian up-and-comers/prospects. I can only think of Davis, Gustaffson, and Bader as top prospects in the division, but after that, there is a big drop off of prospects and up-and-comers skill-wise. I am a huge fan of Fabio Maldonado for example as he is the only up-and-coming Brazilian Light Heavyweight I can think of in the UFC, but I don’t even know if he’ll break into the top ten of the division.

How about

Rafael Cavalcante?

Are you making a joke
He's signed with Strikeforce.

Bader is still a top prospect? He reach his potential and he will most likely be a gate keeper kind of guy for the rest of his career.

I think Bader can still improve. I’d like to see more GnP from him.

I also think bader can and will improve. Jones and Bader to me essentially came up together, but Jones of course is a beast and Bader is still developing. I think it’s much to early to say he peaked when really he’s just gone through his first rough patch.

The UFC really doesn’t position Bader as a gatekeeper, and they treat him like an up-and-comer. I can see Bader still break into the top ten in the future and not be a gatekeeper.

Yeah, there's a serious lack of potential contenders from the LHW prospects

Not just Brazilians. And it looks like Maldonado could probably make MW with some better conditioning and a cut monitored by the wrestlers he’s been training with.

If Cormier comes over to the UFC and drops to LHW out of deference to Cain I think he might be able to put up a good fight… even though he’d be giving up alot of height and reach.

A Very Humble side of Silva!

I Think Anderson is the Only one with the Tools to Dethrone Jones at 205. Rashad and Hendo have Power in their hands and incredible Wrestling. But Silva has Power in all 4 of his Limbs like no one Else in MMA and the Jiu-Jitsu that both Hendo and Shad Lack.

I thought one Uberknee is equal 4 limbs?

Am I incorrect?

Getting tired of all this nationalism developing in the sport.

Although it is probably good for the UFC’s growth.

LOL, nationalism and sports go together

Like peanut butter and chocolate.

It’s deeply ingrained into the sport anyway. Going back to the Gracie’s rivalry with judoka like Kimura and probably before that.

I agree.

But I still don’t like it :)

Same.
I'll ask you both why?

It doesn’t bug me as to what or why someone else choses to base their favorites on categories such as nationality, color, race, beliefs, etc. What causes you to dislike this way of thinking?

You would prefer Brazilians

chant USA USA USA?

It's nice, as a Canadian, to feel a connection to fighters like Jordan Mein, Rory

MacDonald and Gsp. But when I hear the tribal chanting of U-S-A! or “You’re gonna die,” and whatever the Canadian equivalent is, I can’t help but feel a bit disgusted.

I guess I’m just torn, haha.

Ca-na-DUH! Ca-na-DUH! Ca-na-DUH!
I don't cheer for Canadian fighters

Nor do I get teary eyed about their doing poorly or well.

Palhares probably has a better chance of beating Jones than all but a few HWs and LHWs. Of course he also has a better chance of getting blown out of the water than most HWs and LHWs, but at least he has a tool to beat him. Styles make fights and sometimes the person with the best chance to beat a fighter is also the person with the best chance of getting embarrassed by the same fighter.

Palhares heel hook is like Hendo’s big right hand. Comes out of no where and can end a match at any time.

there is no one in his division right now that can beat him. forget rashad, forget henderson…who is left?

Rest that shoulder cupcake

you have a date with sonnen this summer <3

LMAO at thinking Hendo will win another fight alone let alone a fight with Bones

esp if he wasn’t allowed to take TRT

LMAO at thinking Hendo will win another fight

Bullshit. The guy is on his best stretch of his MMA career, way too pessimistic.

its not that pessimistic though i mean jon jones you can say is on a great stretch as well soo

I am not really referring to his chances against Jones, but rather at the idea that he’ll never get a win again.

i'd give Bader, Davis, and Gustaffson to win if he fought any of them right now hell maybe even lil nog

He doesn’t use his wrestling and has a terrible set up to the H-Bomb

terrible set up

that still manages to somehow land.

Henderson just defeated Fedor, Shogun in sucession. Its absurd to say he has no chance at all against everyone.

he would shit on Bader and he could beat Phil and Gustaffson.

He would tear through Lil Nog too. Gustaffson has the best chance out of all of them. Do you really think Ryan bader could defeat henderson?

He would tear through Lil Nog too

The recent ducking and past fight between the two would suggest otherwise. This is a fight I really want to see.

Yeah. Lil Nog / Hendo rematch is going to be awesome.

Would also like it in the same card as Wandy / Belfort II.

Jason fucking Brilz took Lil Nog to a decision
styles make fights homie

Watching Hendo plod after Jones cocking that right hand as Jones picks him apart and taps him out whenever he feels like it should be amusing.

just messing lol

hendo is the easiest jon jones match up but i can hope the right hand will land

And 90% of BE wept at these comments.
I wanna say Gustafsson

Gustafsson’s next fight will really let us know where he stands in the division. Lil Nog has had a lot of really close fights but hasn’t been dominated in his UFC run. If Gustafsson runs through him like he did Vladdy, I’ll put my faith in him being the man to dethrone Jones.

Anderson said Brazilian fighter though

I think Gustafsson has the potential to beat Jones. I want to see him fight somebody like Evans though to test how well he does against wrestlers now.

He lost to Davis, I have little hope that Gustafsson will ever be good enough to beat Jones.

That was a while ago

and since then he’s been working on his wrestling with Davis. He hasn’t been taken down since then either.

Te Huna (of all people) took him down.

what about a blackzillian?
A blackzillian would get subbed in the first round.
It occurs to me now

the UFC needs more fighters from Jamaica.

Lorenzo Fertitta, fucking start UFC expansion into Jamaica now goddamnit.

...

HAHA

thats one huge roll :D:D why would UFC need Jamaican fighters BTW? For the music? Anyways it would be fun :D have never heard of any Jamaican fighters but hey i m starting to like the idea

Maybe if enough fighters fail the drug test enough for Marijuana

they make it legal.

I wonder how Lyoto feels about this

he won that first round for sure. If rumors of Lyoto being sick were true, I wouldn’t mind seeing a rematch since he’s the only one I think that can challenge Jones.

Gustaffson has the potential to do it too. I kinda wish the Vladdy fight lasted longer so we could see more of where his skills are now.

Machida was well, said so himself

He said he was at his best and admitted that Jones was simply the better fighter that night.

Funny that Chael would be Brazil’s only hope of dethroning Jones…

Yes, the nationality really matters alot when it comes to fighting.

Some athletes are more “explosive” and have more natural athleticism according to some.

There isn't a person at LHW of any nationality that could beat Jones period.
So they should just stop having him fight other people then.

Kind of sucks because Jones wants to fight a lot.

I don’t think that was implied by his post.

Jones Almost Invincible!

At this time Bones is almost unbeatable. The only glaring point I see him lacking is one punch ko power. No one fighter has an undestructable chin. The only way Jones gets beat at this time is some1 landing a hail mary strike (ala Serra vs GsP) or gettn injured in a match.

I think he has KO’ed people with one punch.

Hardly a glaring point

He basically KO’d Machida until his face hit the mat, and then just chose to finish it with one of the most vicious chokes ever instead of follow up strikes. Okay, maybe Machida doesn’t have the toughest chin out there, but there was some decent power behind it.

GSP isn’t known for 1 punch KO power, but he’s still the only one to drop Alves with a punch, and aside from Hardy, has been the top- or second-most damaging fighter for most of his opponents. That’s not much of a weakness for him, and it won’t be for Jones.

I fuckin hate jones. He is a snake, and a creep. But surely everyone can see that Anderson is just kissing his arse because he knows Jon would beat the ahit outta him. If he struggled with Chael I can only imagine how badly JJ would throw him around. Hed have his moments while it lasted, machida style, but he’d get done in, I’m sure of it.
