Great Fucking fight
It’s tough but I’ll say Diaz by split decision
rscott94 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
na miller by decision
benten20 - January 24, 2012
I think that Miller will utilize his wrestling to get the fight to the ground, and I feel that he’s good enough not to get caught by anything that Diaz throws at him from his back. On the feet though, it’s all Diaz.
chrisbboy82 - January 26, 2012
I really wish Melvin won on friday
A Diaz rematch always seemed cool to me. This is a great fight too.

Well since Guillard doesn't learn
And Diaz has a granite chin, Nate by sub.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
SSreporters - January 24, 2012
Only a #1 contender fight for Diaz I think...
It’s a tough fight for both guys, but Diaz is a little more marketable and beating Miller would be far more impressive (not to mention giving him one more big win in a row than Miller would have) than Jim beating Diaz because of their styles. Miller has lost to both Henderson and Edgar and would be far more difficult to hype a fight with either of those two than it would were Nate to be in his place. So I’m calling them booking Diaz in a title fight if he wins, and having Miller earn one more nice win until he gets a shot.
KyleCobra - January 24, 2012
you are ignoring that they can also market Jim easily as well
he was on a seven fight win streak b4 he lost to benson
benten20 - January 24, 2012
Jim Miller doesn't have the personality of someone like Diaz
And as exciting as he is, the Benson fight and Guillard are the only fights he’s ever even co-headlined. Diaz meanwhile has probably headlined every other Fight Night.
SSreporters - January 24, 2012
true but think about it
if Frankie wins, then you basically ignore the Bendo fight and market miller as someone who has run through the division and had a 7 fight win streak at one point blah blah blah. if Bendo wins then you have a grudge rematch to hype up for the casuals.
benten20 - January 24, 2012
They hated Bendo/Miller so much
That they incorrectly gave FOTN to Hardy/Lytle and the main event slot to Hardy/Lytle.
It’s hard to have a grudge match for the casuals when you barely hyped the first one (See: Edgar vs. Maynard I to Edgar vs. Maynard II, and so on).
SSreporters - January 24, 2012
true but reality is diaz isnt deserving as of yet and if he beats miller i think he would still need another top 5 fight
benten20 - January 24, 2012
I don't think so
Diaz isn’t on a crazy tear himself…but he ended Cerrone’s crazy streak…which basically means he gets a #1 contender fight next.
Just like when Bendo ended Miller’s crazy streak, and then got Guida(another streak ender) in his next fight as a #1 contender match.
Chris Groves - January 24, 2012
Agreed
Diaz is awesome and never should’ve gone up to WW.
The next step is to get Diego down to LW so we can have Nate vs. Diego.
SSreporters - January 24, 2012
What was his reasoning in going up to WW anyway?

Dave Strummer - January 25, 2012

Bolshevik - January 25, 2012
Nate is on a Gluten Free diet now
This makes him keep his weight down easier as he was struggling to make light weight before he went up to welterweight.

That's very interesting

Drunken cutman - January 25, 2012

In all honesty, I've known quite a few actual straight edges

I hate the people that preach about anything, to be honest. Nobody finds out that I don’t drink unless they specifically ask me if I want a drink, and I always just say ‘no’.
I hate the high and mighty aspect some people get…there are maybe 3-4 out of our group of 10-15 that are ‘straight edge’…and thankfully none of them are d!cks about it.

benten20 - January 25, 2012
Personality?
Shnak - January 25, 2012
The problem with a lot of “boring” fighters isn’t the lack of personality of the fighters, it’s the lack of effort of the interviewers to try to do anything more than boilerplate questions. Not shoehorning false drama into the same rinse-repeat questions =/= boring.
If you’ve ever listened to the Sunday Sitdown that Jack Encarnacio does on Sherdog Radio, he basically has an actual 30-40 minute conversation with guys, not just about MMA, but about who they are. When an interviewer actually takes the time to properly prep so that they know more about a fighter than his fight finder record, you get better interviews that show a guy’s actual personality. His Sunday Sitdown with Jim was excellent and covered everything from why he doesn’t do the fake trash talk to his home brewing, to the time he got so drunk at an Octoberfest party that he lost his wedding ring in the fire and didn’t find it until “it was glowing like in Lord of the Rings.”
JustBlogGuy - January 25, 2012

I don't like this fight one bit.
Only because I like both fighters a bunch, and don’t want to see either lose. I was really hoping they were gonna let Nate beat up BJ. Oh well, WAR DIAZ.
ANance - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Great fight but I don't think it's great matchmaking,
Going to be a war but where does it leave Miller if he wins, whether Bendo beats Frankie or not. At the same time it cuts Nate out as a potential 155 contender.
That said, I think Diaz wins and is still another fight away from a title shot but I would have preferred to see Nate fight the winner of Pettis vs. Lauzon
ThatsHowIRoll - January 24, 2012
if miller and frankie win then its easily marketable as well as if bendo wins
benten20 - January 24, 2012
Disagree
If Frankie wins many will say, ‘but Bendo smashed miller blah blah’. And I’d agree with them. I think they are burning Diaz a bit here. But like I said, I backed him against Cerrone and will again in this fight.
ThatsHowIRoll - January 25, 2012
Who would you put ahead of Nate at that point? Wins over Miller and Cerrone would be enough IMO.
Pillowhands - January 24, 2012
a rematch with maynard if he beats miller id say
benten20 - January 24, 2012
I can see that, but I think UFC might hesitate to put Gray back in the mix after he got 2 shots at the belt. I think the public would much rather see Nate get a title shot than Gray get a 3rd.
Pillowhands - January 24, 2012
Maynard would have to win before fighting Nate. Joe Silva likes to match guys that are winning with other people that are winning.
RagingNoodles - January 24, 2012
gray vs cerrone? winners gets pettis if j-lau wins
hewsdaddy - January 24, 2012
Guida vs. Maynard
discoandherpes - January 25, 2012
Maynard is coming off a loss
discoandherpes - January 25, 2012
Agreed, I think he's at the level now TBH.
But despite being one of my fav fighters I can just also see the argument that he is one fight off… I think the winner of JLo Pettis is the only option. Another snooze fest with Maynard would be completely useless, is shit stylistically for Diaz and would ruin Diaz as a legit contender at that point where Gray still remains in no-mans land after the Frankie trilogy.
ThatsHowIRoll - January 25, 2012
Oh Shit
A Diaz is going to be on live TV???? I can’t wait for ignance to ensue.
Pillowhands - January 24, 2012
Wow suprised by this match up. Was expecting Nate to be matched up with Pettis-Lauzon winner for the title shot. And I really wanted Jim to fight Barboza. Hell who am I kidding this is gonna be a WAR! What about a co-main with cain vs ??? That would be a sick Cinco de Mayo card.
MMA214 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
wow what?
Jim deserves a title shot way more then Nate does right now.
benten20 - January 24, 2012
On a one fight win streak?
Nate’s last loss was at welterweight, to RORY FUCKING MACDONALD
halitosis - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Not so sure about that , nate just beat a cerrone whos a top contender and miller was thrashed by bendo. Jim is on a 1 fight win streak while nate is on a 2 fight win streak and beating guillard aint worth that much.
MMA214 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
and one of nates wins was a totally out of his prime and done career wise takanori gomi
who is way less relevant then guillard
benten20 - January 25, 2012
It's not about deserving.
Although I think Nate sparking Cerrone is plenty deserving enough, the fact that Bendo stomped Miller doesn’t put him in a good position for the next shot whether he becomes the champ or loses.

How is Miller vs Edgar/Bendo marketable?
The loss to Bendo wasn’t even a year ago and it was very one sided. People won’t care about the reports of Miller having mono or whatever has come out now. It’s not a slight against Miller at all, but he would be only two fights removed from a very one sided loss. Diaz would only be three fights removed but has marketability on his side. I personally wouldn’t mind seeing any combination of those guys go at it, but they aren’t marketing towards just me.
KyleCobra - January 24, 2012
Rematches are marketable dude...plain and simple.
Chris Groves - January 24, 2012
Really?
So no matter how one sided a win or loss was…people will want to see it again? Do you think they’d be quick to do a fourth fight between Edgar and Maynard? A rematch between Anderson and Okami? Some rematches are marketable…a lot are not…THAT is plain and simple.
KyleCobra - January 24, 2012
Yeah, UFC 136 did a TON of buys
SSreporters - January 24, 2012
Being sandwiched between a Jon Jones card and what was expected to be a GSP card
Didn’t really help…with awareness or the devotion it got marketing wise.
Chris Groves - January 24, 2012
What was the excuse for 125 then?
Because it didn’t do much better.
KyleCobra - January 24, 2012
Lack of star power?
OMGitsME - January 24, 2012
Yeah...which usually means the fighters were harder to market...
Which is exactly what I’m saying will get Nate a shot before Jim, on top of having one more win than him.
KyleCobra - January 24, 2012
I really believe you can market anyone.
Some people you just have to put more effort into.
OMGitsME - January 24, 2012
Jon Fitch would need a lot of marketing
Unfortunately his highlights consist of finishes from 2006 and getting the tar beaten out of him by GSP and Hendricks

benten20 - January 25, 2012
Before 125 Edgar vs. Maynard was supposed to be the worst fight of all time.
Bolshevik - January 24, 2012
Not when they’re lopsided… Miller was completely dominated by Bendo and shouldn’t get a rematch with him before he’s won 2-3 huge fights, especially if it’s for a title.
Shnak - January 25, 2012
The fight wasn't that much of a blowout
discoandherpes - January 25, 2012
It was. All Miller did in the 2nd and 3rd rounds was hang on for dear life. It only went to a decision because Miller is a tough SOB. Just about any other LW would’ve been finished by Bendo that night.
Shnak - January 25, 2012
Definitely not an issue with Edgar.
It’s been so long since they fought that it’s basically a new match-up. Plus I haven’t even actually seen that fight.
Bolshevik - January 24, 2012
Like I said, Edgar not as much...
but it has been a lot longer in between that fight and a rematch. It still wouldn’t be as marketable as Diaz vs Edgar because, like anyone with common sense would agree, Nate has a lot more marketability. That marketability is what will get him a first time shot at either Edgar or Bendo compared to Millers second shot at them.
KyleCobra - January 24, 2012
Oh the boxing in that fight would make my eyes water with joy.
OMGitsME - January 24, 2012
Nobody who wasn’t there live has. Not even Jimmy or Frankie ever got a copy of the event for some reason, even though Reality Fighting otherwise always had one. I know Jim’s camp has tried to find somebody with a copy a few times and never could.
JustBlogGuy - January 25, 2012
My take
Miller beats Diaz? They give the title shot to winner of Lauzon/Pettis and Miller has to win one more (Maynard?) to get a shot.
Diaz beats Miller? Diaz gets the shot.
TheMuscleShark - January 24, 2012
I like Lauzon
But propel him to a title shot so quickly? I have my reservations about that, then again, first round Joe Lauzon is the most dangerous fighter in the UFC
IRodC - January 25, 2012
they wouldnt do the maynard vs miller match because it could kill one of them as a contender period
benten20 - January 25, 2012
Maynard had two chances… he’s only a viable contender once everyone else has had their chance. He’s way back of the line at the moment.
Shnak - January 25, 2012
I am excite
Bolshevik - January 24, 2012
Nate takes this
Watched Gray v Nate 2 the other day. Nate’s boxing has improved by leaps and bounds in the last 2 years and his Ceaser Gracie Brown belt is as good as any Black Belt in MMA. At 26 he is reaching his prime, he going to tough out for anyone at 155.
Pillowhands - January 24, 2012
Nates boxing doesnt matter in this fight
Miller is ythe type of fighter that has always given Diaz trouble: a strong wrestler with excellent submission defence. Millers also far better then Stevenson or Guida on the ground

Miller is a big lightweight. He gets up around 180 out of camp and cuts from the area of 175. I’ve never understood where the “Jim Miller is small,” thing came from.
JustBlogGuy - January 25, 2012
That crazy stat they pulled for Miller before the Guillard fight was...crazy
Miller has never lost a fight where he has scored at least one takedown.
I have to think that Diaz isn’t going to keep Miller from taking him down…and statistically that means Miller wins.
Obviously we could have Miller’s first fight where he gets a TD and doesn’t win…but again, the stats sort of go against that.
Chris Groves - January 24, 2012
Fitch got kayoed in 12 seconds
Big Nog got tapped.
TheFilt - January 24, 2012
I know, there is a first time for everything
But I think the safer bet is for the ‘thing that never happened before’ to not happen in the next fight…I’m not saying it will never happen ever…but as far as this fight goes…I think the odds are pretty safe.
And Fitch HAD been KO’d before…just not at WW.
Chris Groves - January 24, 2012
I don't think that stat(or any stat really) holds much weight
Considering the match up.
Diaz is a guy who has taken great TD/top control fighters to split decisions and close 29-28 fights. Not too mention, he has legitimate arguments that he won both the Maynard and Guida fights. Most of which, saw him on the bottom.
TheFilt - January 24, 2012
Believe me, I'm not counting Nate out
I’m a huge fan of both guys.
But something in my gut tells me Miller could easily do the whole ‘gameplan’ thing and get the W.
Chris Groves - January 24, 2012
The word 'easily'
I don’t see how Miller can ‘easily’ win this fight in any capacity.
This match up is no more in his favor than it is for Nate.
Miller isn’t a lay and pray fighter. He’s going to be active. That means Diaz will be even more active. I think its a toss up really.
TheFilt - January 25, 2012
Wrong choice of words
You are right…I don’t think a win would be ‘easy’ for Miller…but I think it’s definitly there, clear, and enitrely possible.
Miller so far, loses to guys who can counter his wrestling/grappling.
Diaz seems to be more of the time who loses to guys who can outwrestle him.
I think the chances of Miller outswrestling Diaz are better than Diaz stuffing and counter Miller’s wrestling/grappling.
Chris Groves - January 25, 2012
I think it will be a fast paced ground fight
with Miller on top.
Until late in the 2nd or early 3rd. That’s when everyone( including Maynard, Guida and Kim) seems to let Nate take over.
I just think that Nate has fought enough wrestlers to know how to be effective against Miller on his back.
TheFilt - January 25, 2012
Very good point
Chris Groves - January 25, 2012
Those 3 don't threaten with submissions as much as Miller does
IRodC - January 25, 2012
Almost all of Miller's subs
come from the bottom.
I honestly don’t think he will be going for subs here. That would give Diaz his biggest chance of reversing position.
TheFilt - January 25, 2012
They guy went for a standing arm triangle against Ben Henderson
I don’t think he is worried about losing position
IRodC - January 25, 2012
And lost badly
He better worry about losing position in a 3 round fight against a guy like Diaz.
If Miller wins this fight, it will be by postion.
TheFilt - January 25, 2012
he did hit that triangle from the mount a while back
The Lethal Haze - January 25, 2012

I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes Miller down instead.

TKO… no.
halitosis - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Yeah
Cause there was no way Melvin was gonna drop him either, right?
TheFilt - January 24, 2012
Actually no
I knew Melvin would tag him.
Nate Diaz doesn’t hit like Melvin Guillard, and his accumulation of medium power strikes won’t drop Miller.
halitosis - January 24, 2012 via mobile
I'm saying that people claimed Miller wouldn't get rocked or KO'd
It could have easily happened.
Anyone can get dropped by anyone, especially is they’re tired and the punches pile on.

DankNabbot - January 25, 2012
I can understand
But I hate the oversimplification of ‘They were made by the same guy’…no movie is made by any one guy. Even in the case where the same person wrote, directed, AND was one of the producers…saying ‘that guy made the movie’ is a bit much for me.
There are two things I’m a fanatic about, movies and MMA, movies came first…so I can be a bit of a stickler

BJJ
I’m not an expert by any means, who has the advantage on the ground here? Both guys are usually better at BJJ than their opponents. I feel like Nate has the advantage but only because I have seen him do the flex/middle triangle finger whilst simultaneously submitting a man.
Pillowhands - January 24, 2012
Pure BJJ I would take Nate.
It is hard to ignore Miller’s wrestling though.
OMGitsME - January 25, 2012
People highly underrate Miller’s BJJ a lot of the time. Everyone laughs now that Do Bronx was rushed so fast, but at the time a LOT of people thought he was the better BJJ player. People remember Bocek on Miller’s back and forget that was because he won a single scramble out of a leg lock, and that otherwise all the grappling was Bocek getting a takedown and immediately getting tied up and threatened by Miller off his back. Similarly, Tibau was getting creamed on the feet and still was backing out of his takedowns before they even hit the mat because he felt in danger. Fighting dead tired before even stepping into the cage, then making a mistake and gassing himself harder with that standing arm triangle, Miller still caught a nasty leg-over kimura and fully hit kneebar on Henderson. There is nobody in the game he’s afraid to fight on the mat with and nobody he can’t put in real danger, while on the flipside he’s never been in any real submission danger I can think of, and that includes an ADCC level black belt on his back with an arm trapped for two minutes and unable to ever come close to the neck.

Matchup. Fuck.
TheLastEmpress - January 25, 2012
Henderson orr Edgar
would be much worse, IMO.
TheFilt - January 25, 2012
I wasn’t just talking about the wrestling. He is a wrestler who Diaz has very little chance of submitting.
TheLastEmpress - January 25, 2012
He'd have even less chance against Henderson
and no better chance against Edgar.
TheFilt - January 25, 2012
Miller isn’t a high-end top control wrestler. I don’t think Miller will be able to keep Nate down like others have.
Pillowhands - January 25, 2012
Not to mention all those fights against LW wrestlers could have gone either way.
I got Diaz by UD.
discoandherpes - January 25, 2012
I totally disagree
this fight is super winnable for Nate. Miller isn’t a guy who’s going to wash and repeat takedowns all fight, and that’s not the best aspect of his game. I think this fight could be real interesting both on the mat and standing, where Nate will have a huge advantage.
Dave Strummer - January 25, 2012
Plus
Miller is an extremely well rounded fighter with no real glaring hole in his game, but he isn’t particularly great at any aspect of MMA.
discoandherpes - January 25, 2012
I'd say he's great at BJJ.
but then, so is Nate. I wouldn’t be surprised to actually see Nate a mild favorite. Miller isn’t the archetypal guy who gives him fits.
Dave Strummer - January 25, 2012
Just curious… who has Nate ever beat that you’d consider to be similar to Miller?
Shnak - January 25, 2012
It's not so much who Nate has beaten, as who has beaten Nate
which has tended to be big, strong, top-control wrestlers who are happy to work for takedowns and grind things out in half guard while avoiding subs.
Miller is a guy who is confident exchanging on the feet and doesn’t really play a lot of safety first top-control, so I think he’s actually a pretty good opponent for Nate.
Dave Strummer - January 25, 2012
Right, I misunderstood what you were saying. Most of Nate’s victories have been to big wrestlers, and that’s just not Miller. Of his losses in the UFC, only Joe Stevenson isn’t a big wrestler, but that happened over 3 years ago when Nate was nowhere near as good as today. It’s a very good fight, and I’d have no problems giving the winner a title shot, especially if Edgar beats Bendo.
Shnak - January 25, 2012
Why not Bendo?
dajulzta - January 25, 2012
Hey, you know what?
Just for fun, Joe Silva, hit us up with Cerrone vs. Guillard on the same card as this one.

TheFilt - January 25, 2012

Earl Montclair - January 25, 2012
I think Melvin would smash Cerrone
Donald would have a really hard time getting it to the ground.
TheFilt - January 25, 2012
So did Miller, but that didn’t stop Melvin from fucking that up.
Pillowhands - January 25, 2012
lol
True.
I think Cerrone’s BJJ is a level or two down from Miller’s though. I also think those shots would have really hurt Donald, maybe even finished him.
TheFilt - January 25, 2012
on the other hand
Donald’s MT is far superior to Miller’s so I doubt Melvin would be able to put it on Donald like he did to Jim standing
Earl Montclair - January 25, 2012

Exciting. I went to look up the fighters and I noticed something weird about Cerrone that I never noticed before. During his last fight they really hyped his Muay Thai skills. So he’s finished 7 times, and 6 of them were by submission and only one by KO/TKO. Sounds like a grappler to me, but hey, w/e. Cerrone would go for the sub.

Andy Anderson - January 25, 2012
Why the heck would you want to see that fight again? Shogun should’ve won it the first time, and demolished Machida the 2nd time. Absolutely nothing changed since to indicate that Machida would fare any better, and besides, Shogun gains nothing from fighting him again. That’s just plain bad matchmaking all around.
Shnak - January 25, 2012
Neither guy is getting a title shot any time soon
The first fight was entertaining and competitive and I have no reason to believe it wouldn’t be a good fight the third go around. I think it’s pretty good actually.
discoandherpes - January 25, 2012
And if Shogun KO’s Machida within seconds again? Do they fight a 4th time because you’re pretty sure it’ll go like their first fight, again? Come on.
Rematches should only happen when the original result was somewhat of an aberation, or if there’s some title implications in play. In this case, it just doesn’t work.
I’m not sure who Machida fights now, maybe Hendo? That is, if Evans beats Davis and finally gets his shot at Jones?

Bonus Comparisons Diaz v Miller
Nate Diaz = 5 FOTN + 3 SOTN for $380,000 and tied at 2nd place for most bonuses
Jim Miller = 1 FOTN + 3 SOTN for $215,000
That spells an exciting fight no matter what, but proves that Diaz is the more marketable, more exciting fighter and deserves the LW title shot.
RobtWeaver - January 25, 2012
Love the fight, but at the Meadowlands?
I’d rather drive to Prudential Center. Because IZOD is a pain in the ass to get to & then you have to walk through that long ass tunnel to get to the arena. This is a very curious move to me, as the last 2 UFC cards in Newark did very well.

i'm suprised so many think Nate has a chance here
Miller has only lost to superior wrestlers. He has the wrestler to take down Nate, and he has the BJJ to avoid getting submitted. He isn’t losing this fight.
