Demian Maia is no stranger to Chael Sonnen, having submitted him in just over 2:30 when they met at UFC 95. Being Brazilian also makes Maia a target in Sonnen's trademark anti-Brazil rants.
So one might think that Maia would not be Sonnen's biggest fan. But in a recent article on SporTV, Maia was actually extremely complimentary when discussing Chael and their interactions (translation by Tom Mendes):
We have talked a few times. I think he's very intelligent, he knows what to say. I think he sometimes pushes the envelope, but he's good in attracting the media to himself. He's a very tough fighter, and deserves to fight for the title. I have nothing against him, and it's obvious that you don't need more than two brain cells to see that he's joking. I told him that he should become a comedian. There's a lot of passion in the sport, and there are people that don't like him. He has his style, he's more conservative, different than myself. But I think Sonnen is a very intelligent guy.
So I guess we can count Maia among the group that "gets it" when it comes to the Sonnen act.
Sonnen faces Michael Bisping at Saturday's UFC on Fox 2 card while Maia will compete on the same card against Chris Weidman.

Sonnen is a funny and a great fighter! And still even when pointed out directly to them many do not get it!
I’m straight,that means I like women. I am a huge fan of all MMA and I love to watch the best fighters fight period! I never miss a UFC event watch every single one at least once. Any one who’s seen Sonnen fight knows that he is still getting better all the time. He has a weakness for subs no doubt but I think he has come along well since his loss to Anderson-After Paulo subed him out then missed weight in the rematch and got his ass kicked. If you watched the whole fight when Sonnen fought Silva you know he gave anderson a beating for four and a half rounds. I think Silva is always going to stand as one of the best of all time but he is at the top of his game and the end of his career not alot of room for improvement hence the avoidance to rematch against Sonnen I don’t blame him he has nothing to gain.

You know, I’d never really heard from Sonnen before the Anderson fight and when I did I thought he was funny. It was fight promotion and it was a cool, original (for me) way to do it. The fight was unbelievable… I remember that when Sonnen tapped we all screamed so much we must have woken up the entire building and I’d never seen this kind of reaction from people outside of the most important soccer matches.
A day or two after the fight I watched a long interview with a very bruised and emotional Chael Sonnen and I sympathized with the guy a lot. The fight was over and the actual person could talk and it was fascinating. I liked Sonnen then and would probably cheer for the guy if I didn’t care for his opponent.
And then there was the doping scandal, the criminal charges and the talk began again… Somewhere along the way it ceased being funny and was just hurtful and pathetic. In my mind he crossed a line from smart fight promoter to xenophobic crook. It’s not that I suddenly started to believe that Sonnen had changed his mind and believed himself all his insane babblings, it’s that the stuff he was talking wasn’t funny anymore and was so ridiculously offensive, especially coming from a person like him, I just couldn’t stomach it anymore.
Also, and I know this shouldn’t bother me, out there somewhere there are bunches of ignorant hateful folk that are stupid and ignorant enough to take even Sonnen’s lowbrow, infantile crap seriously and agree with him.
