Oh, I totally agree

But what she’s saying is hardly coming out of left field. The “GSP is boring” meme runs rampant amongst a lot of MMA fans, including the UG and right here on BE. Some of the writers here have been very open about questioning why GSP didn’t finish opponents that were completely shellacked by “lesser” opposition.

That is a fair criticism and certainly one that many fans would agree with but for her to say “[GSP] needs to step aside and let Nick Diaz kick his ass” or to say “GSP is no longer doing positive things” is not only disrespectful but just plan silly.

I’m not exactly the biggest GSP fan but he has brought a huge amount of publicity, media, and fans to the sport and to be honest, he has made and will continue to make more of an impact than Rousey ever will.

Be honest now. Do you personally pine to see GSP fight? If you say you do, either you enjoy watching extremely dominate but extremely boring MMA… or you are simply lying.

Saying that, I should have been more specific with my comment. I don’t agree that he brings nothing to the sport as obviously he brings in the casual viewers like crazy. I do agree with pretty much everything else she said though. GSP is boring and it hurts the sport in the long run.

There isn't one MMA fan that wasn't excited to watch GSP-Diaz or GSP-Condit

There are plenty of whiners like yourself who say they won’t watch a GSP fight again, but you’re not kidding anyone.

GSP faced guys whose goal was a decision loss. Hardy outright admitted it (there were plenty of finishing attempts anyway, though GSP was at fault for lack of damage). Koscheck backpedaled the whole fight. Shields had no intention of winning (abandoned his ground game).

I’ve never said that I won’t watch a GSP fight again actually. I don’t buy cards because he is on them though. I buy them if the undercard is attractive enough without the main event that features him.

That said, you are right. Everybody was looking forward to a Diaz or Condit vs GSP fight. The reason being is that both fighters are known to push until they are stopped or until they stop their opponent. When is the last fight besides either of these two which haven’t happened that people were actually looking forward to see him fight? More to the point, which was the last one where people weren’t hoping he would actually lose?

You can play the whole it’s not his fault it’s theirs… but it sure seems to be a problem that he has more than most.

Other than Lesnar up until a few weeks ago, I get the most amped up about watching GSP fights. Is this finally the man to beat GSP? Will GSP be able to finish this guy? And when neither happens, I still get to see someone at the top of his art making a fool out of his opponent.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I’m always interested to see somebody beat GSP, but I’m never hyped at all to see the fights. Perhaps the upcoming Condit / Diaz fight might have me excited… but it will still be just because I hope to see GSP get dethroned.

When Rousey starts dominating the best fighters in her weight class, THEN she might have a leg to stand on.

are simply an accident of where he was born. A bunch of Canadians will buy GSP cards, to watch their champion fight.

I’m not saying Canadian nationalism manifesting itself as UFC PPV purchases is a bad thing, just that a whole bunch of people are fans of his because of where he is from, not what he has done.

All Canadian UFC fighters are big stars over here it's true.

In my own town for example, Patrick Cote crossed a street the other day and a large crowd of tens of thousands assembled just to watch him walk by. Stores were closed in a five mile radius and anti riot squads had to be called in. We do love our own.

Like when she challenged Miesha and Miesha got so upset about it, and Ronda just thrived on it and kept going. I’m fine with all her talk as long as she is willing to risk getting into the cage and getting punched in the face and humbled. I think she’s entertaining.

She succeeds in pushing my buttons, in all the wrong ways. I wouldn’t pay $5 to watch one of her fights specifically because I dislike her attitude so much that I’m completely uninterested in what she does professionally. Guess if turning people off by being a bad Chael Sonnen rip-off artist is what she considers good for the sport, well, then I have to agree that she’s much better for MMA than GSP. But entertaining? Not my cup of tea. I prefer not to be aggravated by my entertainment.

I’m aware I’m in the extreme minority here. I don’t know why exactly she bothers me so much; maybe her smug sense of entitlement…. But she really, really does.

Who in Womens MMA right now though really gets that much attention especially after the Cyborg debacle? Rousey really is one of the only driving forces for MMA fans and people in general to watch Womens MMA. It helps too that she’s has legit martial arts credentials in Judo and is attractive to some.
Personally, I think that Rousey is the shot in the arm that Womens MMA needs.

I’m sorry to say, but I just don’t see it. I would think that the movie brought more attention to Gina Carano, but not Womens MMA. If Gina’s not fighting in MMA, why would people care about Womens MMA? I would understand it if Gina was actually fighting, then people who saw the movie or just thinks she’s hot would want to watch her fight in MMA, but since she’s not fighting, I don’t see how she would bring more attention to Womens MMA.
If you can tell me the connection, then I would be more inclined to agree with you, but right now, I just can’t.

I’d prefer a bunch of consumate professionals like GSP to a bunch of dudes like Diaz. And i definitely believe that it will be better for the sport in the future as well, especially with the Fox deal and everything.

That’s today’s innocent, sheltered, everyone gets a medal, hug it out generation talking. Lemme ask you something: was Mike Tyson a consummate pro? Was Ali, calling Frazier a gorilla? Was Duran or Erik Morales, snarling and fouling dudes and hitting up the bitches and yayo between fights? You know who is really professional? The Klitschkos. And absolutely no one gives a rats dick about them. There is a 125+ year history of what works in the fight business, of what people want to see, and it isn’t Cruz or Edgar point fighting their way to victory or GSP crushing Shields with a head kick and then standing there staring at him.

i might be the only person on this site that absolutely loves to watch both these types of fighters. you no what type of fighters i hate to watch…..the Matt Riddles of the world.
Fighters that show unparalleled skills or fighters that excite by finishing fights w/ a good skill set are both amazing to see.
i love to watch GSP dismantle his opponents and i love to watch Diaz finish his fights. why does it have to be one or the other?

Here is the difference

Boxing started as a gentleman’s sport, which is why is was accepted into the mainstream. Once boxing had its foothold, it was able to survive and thrive on controversial characters. MMA is still fighting for basic licensing in some of America’s biggest markets. License stalling because many people don’t understand the sport of MMA. They just see the Diaz’ of the world throwing up middle fingers, swearing every chance they get, and assume that ALL fighters in this sport must be similar. Boxing had many many years of empirical evidence on it’s side, as well as a black tie history in late 19th century U.S/U.K. MMA doesn’t have that luxury, so they need to establish their brand with ambassadors who don’t perpetuate the image that all MMA fighters are uncontrollable, unlikable, hoods.

It's 2012. This sort of mindset is outdated.

Most of the UFC’s new target demo don’t understand what they are watching in the octagon anyhow, so the way the fighter and organization represent themselves goes a long way in molding the impressions that casual fans will have of the sport.

had he not been practically blinded in one eye by flagrant eye pokes throughout the fight. Funny how Rousey forgot to mention that. Or that all of GSP’s boring “jab spamming” turned Koscheck’s face into ground beef for 6 months.

GSP being a draw has absolutely nothing to do with him being a “consummate professional,” if anything its a detriment to his popularity. Ask any casual fan what they remember the most about GSP and I bet its going to be “I’m not impressed by your performance.”

I don’t dislike Frankie as a fighter. He’s obviously extremely talented, and he maintains a high work rate. The last two Maynard fights were obviously amazing because of the back and forth. But when Frankie fights, but the main thing missing in Frankie’s fights, to me, is that sense of danger that spikes your pulse rate.

The fighters who are the most exciting are those who can change the course of a fight dramatically, with a single strike, or a well timed, nasty sub. Frankie’s great at what he does, but what he does is pretty methodical.

I honestly think GSP is just as talented as he has always been, he’s just been on a hesitant streak. For example: the Shields fight. When he picked up Shields and just dumped him, I thought he was finally going to open up and just unload on shields, but I guess the eye thing and whatever. The fight was tedious, but I was still on the edge of my seat.
I mean, the knockout punch, the slick grappling, the quick sub, doesn’t always happen and it’s a shame when both fighters are really waiting for the other to throw so they can counter, but we still watch.
Still have to respect the streak.

Getting gold doesn't mean you're going to be sucessful at MMA

just look at Satoshi Ishii, judo gold medalist from Japan, what has he done lately? Got over handed by Fedor. Course, that fight was all sorts of odd since Iishi fights at LHW and what not.

How many times has Rodrigo won a black belt division in jiu-jitsu? He’s better in MMA than he is in straight grappling, and he’s far from what I’m talking about anyway.

Remember that time Wanderlei fought a guy making his MMA debut? Or both times Fedor has fought middleweights? It simply isn’t “odd” at all.

Or Pawel Nastula.

Granted, he was matched against absurdly better fighters, but the point stands. Olympic gold medal in judo =/= instant MMA greatness.

she's not a hack....

but until she fights a decent fighter who has decent wrestling or striking she certainly isn’t anything spectacular in the MMA world. have said that…..HOT!

This is probably true, everybody’s different.

I don’t mean I want a delicate flower type, but Rousey just seems disrespectful to everyone. Like I said, I liked her when she first started. She’s pretty (for a WMMA fighter). I know she’s doing it to hype her way into a title fight (and kudos), but it just rubs me the wrong way. Nothing she says is particularly clever that I’ve seen. Just seems a little arrogant. But that’s only my opinion, if she does it for you, cool.

The only reason anybody even remotely gives a crap about Rousey and WMMA

is because of guys like GSP who appeal to fans outside of the hardcore base, who helped push MMA closer to the mainstream. A little respect please.

Plus,finishing fight is only one aspect of the “game”.And saying that GSP is a “points fighter” is insane.
I’m a huge fan of his,but I’d love to see him finish more fight too!I’m a MMA fan first and foremost!
But his total domination over his opponent (all top 10 fighters in the world,except maybe Hardy,at the moment of their fight!) is what impress me the most.

I understand what shes trying to do.She want to put herself out there and “trash-talk” herself into big fights (which seem to be working!!!),but disrespecting a well respected champ as GSP like she did was…kind of immature.

Diaz and her are a good comparison…
Well,I’m a little disappointed in her…Danm…In one interview,she talked abt her Olympic bronze more than Cormier ever did (even if it was a 4th place!).

I’m wondering if she’s taken a leaf out of Chael Sonnen’s "Self Marketing 101″ book? If Rhonda just got on with fighting and kept her mouth shut, she would be at the back of a long line of people lining up to fight Tate for the belt.

Because she makes a few outlandish comments, now she’s the No. 1 contender and the media are having a field day over her.

I think Rhonda is very talented (Judo wise), but she still has to improve her striking.

i can think of several instances where this is absolutely untrue.

So you can do something without attempting to do it?

Outside of happenstance and accidents of course. I would think the only way to do and armbar without attempting to do an armbar would be to accidentally do an armbar.

Fuel is fucking awesome btw. But I have a feeling we will see the old, more aggressive GSP when he comes back. He hears what people are saying and wants to prove he’s more than a point fighter. I think he will, at least, try. He tried to finish Shields (which was the worst GSP fight ever).
