Head kick from Phil Davis to open the second round failed as Rashad Evans backed away. The two fighters clinched and traded knees in the center of the octagon. Again the fighters trade in the center of the cage with Evan's the clear winner of the exchanges. Too much too soon for Davis
rscott94 - January 28, 2012 via mobile
Not necessarily.
I think it was the right time for him to fight a top 5 fighter like Rashad. Although Davis clearly lost, he didn’t get blown out of the water completely, and didn’t take so much damage that it will drastically affect his health & career.
This shows where the holes in Phil’s game are. He can either bust his ass to improve and fill in those holes, or not. But the only way it would’ve been too soon for him is if Rashad has really just destroyed him, beat the hell out of him in savage, effortless fashion.

Davis probably shouldnt have worn his championship singlet
He got ownt in the wrasslin department, and the grappling..
Ricardo Arguello - January 28, 2012
Oh no u didnt!!
malo - January 28, 2012 via mobile
Rashad played it safe.
Can’t say I blame him.

Davis’ striking looked horrible. Out of balance, no timing, weak distance management, arm punches, predictable kicking. He was probably rusty as hell too.
dancingChicken - January 28, 2012
To me he looked like a dancing chicken that couldn't get his distance and timing down.

At least it's better than Maia
Un Sandpiper - January 28, 2012
I don’t think he landed a clean shot the entire fight
alxn - January 28, 2012
some of his kicks in the first landed I think
Robert V-U - January 28, 2012
Yeah, he landed a few kicks.
Davis needs to tighten up his hands. This much we know. We also know that he hasn’t yet learned to blend his strikes with his shot yet. All things he needs to improve on.

HEY EVERYONE LOOK I LOST $8193 ON MMAPG

Davis was in way over his head.
IKiIIed007 - January 28, 2012
Evans put a beating on Davis. I was really impressed with his movement and scrambling abilities. This fight was one-sided in a lot of respects
Robert V-U - January 28, 2012
This fight showed the well roundedness of Rashad
He deserved the win. But I don’t see him as a challenge for Jones, and I hate Jones
IRodC - January 28, 2012
Weird shit happens in MMA.
i could see ’Shad beating Jones if he mindfucks him during the fight, kinda how Ali mindfucked Foreman.
Unabomberman - January 28, 2012
man was I WRONG about Rashad
he out wrestled, out struck, out grappled and generally kicked the shit out of Davis
T.P. Grant - January 28, 2012
So was I.
Unabomberman - January 28, 2012
I was surprised that his stamina held up so well.
That’s been a problem for ‘Shad in the past. His economy of motion is so much better though, instead of spending his energy in huge bursts of activity, he’s become much more efficient with how he conserves power.
ElliotMatheny - January 29, 2012
This fight sucked.
SentientAndroid - January 28, 2012
Very stoked about Evans/Jones in Atlanta. I’ll be there
fwjr85 - January 28, 2012 via mobile
OH SHIT DID YOU SEE TWITTER
Jon Jones just said he broke his hand. And foot. And his house burned down. And he died.
Unless Rashad books another fight.
Farthammer - January 28, 2012
How was babysitting?
T.C. Engel - January 28, 2012
Almost as good
As Peyton Manning’s season.
Farthammer - January 28, 2012
Low blow man, low blow.
T.C. Engel - January 28, 2012
He's finally gettin that surgery he so desperately needed
Ricardo Arguello - January 28, 2012
And after all that
Im sure he’ll still come back fight an over the hill challenger and overcome adversity.
…..what a champion
The voice of reason1 - January 28, 2012 via mobile
Henderson vs Jones is much more appealing to me than Evans vs Jones. After tonight, I don’t think Rashad has anything for Jones. He out wrestled a slow and sloppy Phil Davis, but that won’t happen with Jones, and he gassed pretty quickly too. I Just feel like Evans was overall unimpressive…
LeDuc - January 28, 2012 via mobile
How was he unimpressive?
He out wrestled a guy who was a national champ and who was supposed to be the better wrestler. Davis’ reach played no role in the fight either.
He completely dominated Davis, who wore down as the fight went on. Slow and sloppy? No.
Ricardo Arguello - January 28, 2012
Davis was slow and sloppy. His takedown attempts were sloppy and telegraphed, And Hip striking was just plain ugly. Go back and look at those kicks… Rashad out wrestled him clearly, I’m not debating that. Rashad had a couple chances to finish but wouldn’t or couldn’t and I was unimpressed. Sorry if my opinion upsets you…
LeDuc - January 28, 2012 via mobile
I gotta agree with you LeDuc . Evans may have won the fight .....
….. but aginest a largely unproven , untested commodity . And yes while Evans clearly out struck & out wrestled Davis how impressive was this victory ? To me not very . I honestly thought Evans would KO or TKO Davis before the fight because of the superior skill set standing up , but all he really did was eek out a nice , safe win .
MidWayMonster54 - January 29, 2012
Rashad out-wrestled a slow & sloppy Phil Davis
Compared to Dan Henderson, who was out-wrestled by a slow, sloppy & incredibly gassed Shogun Rua.
I must be one of the only people who doesn’t want to see Jones vs Hendo. Hendo landed one good punch against Shields (now a WW), before spending 4 rounds on his back. He will not survive 4 rounds on his back against Jones. He also gassed horribly around the 3rd round of his fight with Shogun.
YPG - January 29, 2012
this card actually surprised me Maia I’m sorry but hes looked horrible for ages now i honestly thought weidman could of ko’d him if he had better striking and you could make an argument that bisping beat sonnen and damn what a lopsided main event
THEFILMGUY - January 28, 2012
all ufc
Phil Davis has no stand up. It’s not just inexperience. He’s just bad. Joe Rogan or anyone else can’t say that on national tv because they are all working for the same company. As far as entertainment, sure this business model can work. ‘Pro’ wrestling worked and that’s what Zuffa has emulated. Real competition substituted for worked matches, otherwise the same model. I gotta call B.S. twice tonight. This one is first: Phil’s stand up is mechanical, rudimentary and just plain bad. The second is 29/28 for Bisping. Bisping had to win huge because Sonnen had already built interest in the ‘rematch’. Fine, but no mention of that because the fighters, announcers, hell the towel boy are all employed by the same company. Works are in the future fellas, what the hell is the difference between this and Pride? Everybody knows where the checks come from.
rumblybob - January 28, 2012
stand up
By the way, can I get an AMEN! from somebody out there familiar with the stand up game. Phil Davis looked like a Hollywood actor throwing those combinations. I don’t mean disrespect, the guy is a physical phenom and he was in there with pretty much a consumate pro. My point is, ‘inexperience’? B.S. At his present level, he doesn’t make in K1, He gets killed on the undercard of any boxing venue…and Joe Rogan can’t say that if he wants to get paid. The fighters in the UFC are the best. Period. The UFC is a counterfeit sports venue.
rumblybob - January 28, 2012
troll
LeDuc - January 28, 2012 via mobile
troll my ass
Give me any flippin’ evidence to the contrary. At least when I watch boxing I’ve got an independent promoter (even if he’s a crook) an independent ref (even if he has been paid off) and absolutely the flippin’ announcers are working for another company. I hate Joe Ledderman but at least I know he’s not being paid by the goddam promoter!
rumblybob - January 28, 2012
Nice way to defend yourself and your argument by ....
….. bringing the most corrupt sport to the table . Bravo .
MidWayMonster54 - January 29, 2012
That is my point
Boxing has damn near killed itself. But my 2 main points: 1. When you see a boxing match on HBO, it is promoted by 2 competing promoters, maybe 2 competing sanctioning bodies, Independently managed fighters, and it is broadcast, hyped, announced etc. by somebody who is not affiliated with any of the above. You have to be a knucklehead if you can’t see the problem with Zuffa controlling almost all of the above, in the same event at the same time. B>S Point #2 Phil Davis has no stand up game. Can he get it? Sure. Right now, it’s amateur level at best and Joe Rogan or anyone else employed by the UFC is not allowed to point that out. Case in point. This link http://mmalinker.com/videos/view/52608/Badr_Hari_vs_Gokhan_Saki
Badr Hari’s mgmt will give him a few fluff fights before they let him fight in the upper ranks of boxing. Watch the damn clip…. Phil Davis very likely never approaches this level of expertise, is not in the same area code now, and I’m saying that the UFC’s monopoly on the sport effectively any discussion of this …FACT… by it’s EMPLOYEES. Sorry to burst your bubble. I love this sport and the UFC can, and frankly I think that means by definition they will, work the fights before all is said and done. I really hope this is not a thread kill as I would love to discuss this with any and all fight fans. But Midway Monster, i hope a one liner insult is not your best effort
rumblybob - January 29, 2012
While I can agree that there are more ....
…. than a few issues with the way Zuffa manages things its still not ant where near as bad as boxing in terms of corruption . When was the last time you heard about a fight fix in MMA or in the UFC ? Or a fighter taking a dive for compensation ? And eliminating guys like Don King from the sport isn’t exactly a bad thing .
One other thing we can agree on is I’m not exactly pleased with the UFC’s monopoly of MMA . Competition would be a good thing for the fighters and their pay .
MidWayMonster54 - January 29, 2012
Evans fights Jones like how he fought Davis tonight, he's DONE!
Meek Mill - January 29, 2012
Rashad looked GREAT!
His striking and counter wrestling looked awesome. I dont know what people are talking about. He had less of the physical attributes of Davis and owned him in wrestling. It was so technical to watch his reverses and takedowns. He may out wrestle Jones in the next fight. He never really was under Davis’s control and he looked great IMO.
I dont think he played it safe either, they kept a fast pace and he didnt even looked exhausted after the 25 minutes! of fighting.
Shad’s going to take the belt, you watch.
F.U.B.A.R - January 29, 2012
I agree that Rashad looked great.
He nullified the wrestling of Davis, outgrappled him on the mat and by the end of the fight had Phil staggering around the cage, even forcing him to drop to the floor a couple of times.
I think it is a bit of a stretch to claim Rashad “cruised” to the end when he turned it up in the last leaving his man reeling like a novice.
