This afternoon, the official twitter of B.J. Penn sent out an incredibly bizarre tweet. Most immediately believed that the former lightweight champion's twitter was hacked and that it was the work of some deranged fan who decided to have a little fun on twitter. The tweet was an attack on Nick Diaz and Jon Fitch, two former Penn opponents. After the Diaz fight, BJ announced his retirement in the cage and was set to walk away from the sport of MMA. And since UFC 139, he's been extremely quiet and reclusive. It appears that Penn still has the itch to fight.
The tweet from BJ Penn:
Full text from the tweet:
. http://yfrog.com/oc35195437j - @nickdiaz209 Look how much bigger you are in this pic..I thought you were gonna scrap from the beginning homie? What was that coward fence holding strategy to tire out the smaller man? Street fighter my ass! I made you fight like glass jaw @jonfitchdotnet poser! I'll be ready for that weak bs next time we fight!
Pedro Carrasco, the MMA news director of BJPenn.com addressed the bizarre tweet on the MMA forum the UG:
"Pedro Carrasco - and there is a reason why he posted it, He is fired up because now that the holidays are over and a lot of his post-fight distractions are behind him he has nothing to do but think about things and he is not happy with the way he performed in his last several fights.
I am not here to make excuses for him, but I am pretty sure people, at least with some sense of intelligence, can identify that the BJ that fought Edgar, Fitch and Diaz was not the same Penn that fought the Diego's and Florians of the world
Things changed, but as it sits right now, he is back. That killer mentality and fire is back and it's been brewing for a while now and today's tweet is a result of it just boiling over!
Expect more from Penn to come for sure! "
I hope that Pedro Carrasco is right in his assessment of BJ Penn's current attitude regarding his career. The BJ Penn that ruled the lightweight division isn't the one who has shown up lately in the UFC. However, if BJ is using his News Director to plant a story in hopes of angling for another fight with Diaz, he could end up extremely injured. He needs to commit himself 100% to training and unless he does so, he'll just continue to tarnish his legacy.

Yeah, there’s a big difference between an angry tweet and a full camp with a return to the octagon.

theworldsoldestsport - January 6, 2012
So stupid.
Of course Diaz is bigger, he’s an actual WW, not a LW fighting in the WW division. You want to fight guys your size BJ? Cut the weight. All the other natural 155ers do it. This is just fluff to spark interest.
Machiel Van - January 5, 2012
Nick Diaz has actually fought close to lightweight before
He fought at 160 a couple times in his career.
discoandherpes - January 5, 2012
Yeah, and it was a very, very tough cut. He only figuth at that weight because Jake Shields was champion at WW in Elite XC (which is a big part of the reason Shields fought at MW in SF). BJ is smaller than Diaz, period.
Machiel Van - January 5, 2012
He's back!
He’s going to be as good as everybody thought he was, better than everybody else! Just like Nas is.

ToffeeA - January 5, 2012
If Crazy BJ still exists, he needs to stay at lightweight.
MicahtheCynic - January 5, 2012
This.
B.J. needs to stop complaining about fighting a bigger guy. He’s only fighting a bigger guy because he’s too lazy to cut to 155. Oh, and when he was at 155 he lost twice in a row to a smaller guy.
MichaelDavidSmith - January 5, 2012

BJ vs Nate for his return would be fine with me
Robert V-U - January 5, 2012
Or go to SF and fight Melendez.
Bolshevik - January 5, 2012
I like that idea even better
Robert V-U - January 5, 2012
Melendez would smash Penn at this point. Penn brought me back to UFC, but watching his last few fights has been a sad sight. His corner was useless, and he looked like his heart wasn’t in it. I understamd that they are prizefighters, but fighting strictly to get paid, with no real desire besides getting paid going in to a fight is unfair to his distinguished legacy, and can only further serve to tarnish it. Maybe he should think like Tito, and call out another aging legend for one last, fan friendly hurrah. We love us some B.J. Penn around here, but miss him, even as we watch him fight.
Mr. Socko - January 6, 2012 via mobile

InternetRacist - January 5, 2012
BJ Penn reminds me of Brock Lesnar
You can want the money or the fame or to be a champion…but some people just don’t have what it takes to keep it. They don’t like fighting or they don’t like training or something is missing.
I enjoy watching both of them fight, but I won’t be fooled again.
Django Z - January 6, 2012
Despite the fact that I picked BJ to win the first fight,
these days I don’t really see even a motivated BJ Penn beating Nick Diaz.
alicks - January 5, 2012
Nick Diaz is a beatable opponent for BJ, if he comes in good shape.
lolumad - January 5, 2012
I don’t think he can get into good enough shape to beat Diaz regardless. He drowned BJ with his cardio in their last fight; Diaz’s cardio is on another level, probably the best in MMA.
Machiel Van - January 5, 2012
so he didnt come in shape last time

Also, I have just heard of marmalade, is mermelade made out of mermaids?
Andy Anderson - January 5, 2012
I’m pretty sure Unabomberman is from Mexico, so he actually might not get the Spam/Hawaii connection.
Sqwibbs - January 5, 2012
I don't even know what that is, correct.
And I know it is Mermelade. But Marmalade is made from real live Mermaids, so…

2) BJ hires the Marinoviches again
Also, BJ, if you think you’re getting Diaz again, you gotta stop mainlining poi. If you want to stay at 170, we’re talking Paulo Thiago and Brian Ebersole…
John Danaher's Hair - January 5, 2012

warren305 - January 5, 2012

John Danaher's Hair - January 5, 2012
Warming up to the idea of skull carving? Cool!
Unabomberman - January 5, 2012
The blueprint is there
Outlast BJ, you win.
It could even be a 5 rounder.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012
ok, but let's not act like Penn's a can.
He’s fallen, but not that far.
John Danaher's Hair - January 5, 2012
I'm not saying that
But Nate does have the tools and the style to beat him.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012
Seeing Nate lite up Cerrone, I agree.
That and Nate is a bit better of a wrestler. He can clinch and has some throws. I think he can keep it standing.
discoandherpes - January 5, 2012
not necessarily
…BJ was lighting up Diego even in the 4th and 5th unless my memory has failed me…
OmoPlata - January 5, 2012
Therefore
Diego did not outlast BJ.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012
When he was with the Marinovich's(spelling?)
He was tearing it up…looked leaps and bounds better than Florian, looked leaps and bounds better than Sanchez.
I mean…I think there comes a point where a fighter just naturally starts passing their prime, once they hit about 32-33 and they’ve been in it 10+ years…it’s hard to say they are going to improve with time.
But, I would love to see him put together any kind of run that he can.
Chris Groves - January 5, 2012
seriously
what actually happened with BJ and the Marinovich? Surely BJ knows that he was amazing when he was training with them and looked pretty mediocre without
Our Bovine Public - January 5, 2012
I saw some interview where BJ mentioned that he had been approached about doing steroids several times earlier in his career, from lots of different trainers and whatnot.. and that he had always said no and stopped training with those people.
So, I have sometimes wondered if maybe that could have been what happened there? I want to stress though that I don’t have anything specific to back that up, basically just wild speculation on my part.
Horselover Fat - January 5, 2012
Also
Absolutely no one in football like Marv Marinovich or has any respect for him.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012
Really? I honestly know nothing about his background or reputation, other than training with BJ when he was good.
Horselover Fat - January 5, 2012
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuude...the guy is a grade 'a' psycho dad.
Unabomberman - January 5, 2012
He's a durn good pa, but he hates the laaaaaaaaaw!
CasualMMAFan - January 6, 2012
He ruined his own career with overtraining and his son’s life by…being a lunatic, I guess is what you’d call it? Even today, there’s a lot of controversy around him.
Tedd Welch - January 5, 2012
Oh, okay. That’s very interesting.
Horselover Fat - January 5, 2012
ESPN made a great documentary about him and Todd
Marv groomed Todd himself to be an All-Time great college quarterback and future NFL star.
……. Todd has been treated for using every drug you could imagine. Literally.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012
Right, that’s.. I guess that makes my little crackpot theory even more plausible.
Horselover Fat - January 5, 2012
BJ said prior to the Diaz fight...
that he was thinking about training with the Marinoviches again, so I don’t think that they were PED guys.
John Danaher's Hair - January 5, 2012
Marv seems to oddly self-righteous
MauiPimpin said he heard word around the island that Marv was trying to tell him how to train MMA and he didn’t like it. At all.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012
All I know is...
that the best BJ we’ve ever seen was trained by the Marinoviches. Also, Maui’s on a different Island than Hilo, no? I think there may be a case of island telephone going on….
John Danaher's Hair - January 5, 2012
The MMA scene on the islands is a very close knit group actually.
Between Oahu, Maui, Big Island, word gets around very quickly but it usually doesn’t leave the islands.
Brandon Starr - January 5, 2012
Yep. I train with some of his sparring partners on occasion and my instructors train with the Penn brothers regularly..
Supposedly Marinovich was trying to change the why he actually fights, as opposed to just how he trains. Big no no in Penn’s camp. However, if Marv could just shut his mouth about that kind of shit, there is no doubt that Penn was in the best shape of his life while training with him.
Brandon Starr - January 5, 2012
I’d probably kick him out too if I spent my entire life training in martial arts, as well as my sparring partners and coaches – and then this guy who dedicated his and his son’s life to football is going to tell me how to fight?
nannerb - January 6, 2012
I think Todd got busted for Steroids in high school. I’d sure buy it.
Tedd Welch - January 5, 2012
I thought that they were known for...
scientific, clean train methods, but who knows? Nothing would surprise me in terms of PED use in sports anymore…
John Danaher's Hair - January 5, 2012
it was scientific all right, produced in a lab. I remember seeing Todd all over Cal High Sports, he was the tallest, biggest ginger kid I’ve ever seen.

vile(nt)green - January 5, 2012
This makes me wonder

I can’t imagine how he thinks it could have played out different.
Seems like BJ is really depressed and just lashing out for some attention.
I miss the old BJ who just accused guys of cheating if they beat him.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012
BJ won the first round rather handily.
I don’t think it’s weird at all that he thinks he can win. Can he? Especially if the next one’s a 5 round main? No. No he can not. There are worse things than seeing another 15 of those two, but there are so many better matchups for Diaz right now.
John Danaher's Hair - January 5, 2012
Then got smashed in the second
10-8 status.
discoandherpes - January 5, 2012
It was really sad to see.
Had that fight been, like, five rounds, BJ would’ve died of a heart attack.
Unabomberman - January 5, 2012
And after five rounds Diaz would have fought GSP right there on the spot

discoandherpes - January 5, 2012

John Danaher's Hair - January 5, 2012
I dunno.
I’ve never seen GSP try to adapt his fighting strategy to effectively use his strengths while running a marathon.
I’m taking Diaz on this one.
Unabomberman - January 5, 2012
I'd have to take GSP over Nick
But if one unfortunate thing happened(an injury, eye poke, etc) the odds would go more and more to Nick’s favor.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012

BJ Penn needs to drop down. He is in better shape at lightweight than welterweight.
Like I said in another thread, there are much more interesting match ups at lightweight. Gray Maynard, Jim Miller, Melvin Guillard, Clay Guida, Cerrone and Diaz are all great fights for BJ.
discoandherpes - January 5, 2012
weird
if he is back though he needs to fight at 155.
Penn vs Nate Diaz.
Tats16 - January 5, 2012
I've said it even before the Diaz fight
BJ Penn is done as a fighter and his head isn’t in it anymore no matter what he says. He gets very discouraged when he’s behind in a fight and I think as long as you pressure him you’ll beat him.
Basically if he ever comes back he needs to fight someone in the top 15 at LW.
SSreporters - January 5, 2012
I give him 8 hours til he apologizes for what he says
Krimson - January 5, 2012

discoandherpes - January 5, 2012

Dana should ban him from fighting at WW
nobody wants to see him at ww unless they hate him and want him to lose.
155 damnit.
Tats16 - January 5, 2012
Agreed
Better match ups, and quite frankly BJ is a better fighter at lightweight.
Plus the division is so insane and deep that Edgar could lose the belt at anytime, which opens up the opportunity for BJ to fight for the gold again.
discoandherpes - January 5, 2012
What is BJ talking about saying this “I thought you were gonna scrap from the beginning homie? What was that coward fence holding strategy to tire out the smaller man? Street fighter my ass”
OK BJ this coming from the man who shot for a takedown not even a min into the 1st round. You gassed yourself out and then got your ass beat BJ end of the story

I’m taking Diaz all day in that rematch. Especially because it seems like Sanchez’s wrestling has actually regressed since then.

Shocbomb - January 5, 2012
Yeah, if BJ could hold him down
I doubt Diego can do it. Plus Diaz boxing is a lot better now adays.
discoandherpes - January 5, 2012
Coming from as big a Penn fan as humanly possible, this is weak. If he can’t put the time in to polish his cardio, then then beating matt hughes will forever be his biggest accomplishment at ww, period.

Huge BJ fan
but I can’t believe the hype behind the “he’s back” movements any more. To be emotionally invested in BJ Penn’s career is to be disappointed. He hasn’t done what he needs to do to fulfill his potential and he sadly never will.
Hope to see him fight again at 155 but only with a new camp and approach. If he fights at 170 again, I will find it hard to watch.

Oh how fickle we MMA fans are...
Everyone writes off BJ after a loss to the #1 contender, A guy he was beating the shit out of until his gas tank failed him, And now that Nate has one decent win hes all of a sudden a LW god when really hes a poor man’s Nick at best who would get smashed by BJ just like his brother did(in the 1st).
One win = Godly, One loss = can… Sigh.
Chin Check - January 5, 2012
Yeah. That’s not how you win an argument…
Unabomberman - January 5, 2012
Let's be real
BJ has lost is 1-3-1 in his last 5 fights.
Nate has done really well against several top 10 LW’s and is looking better and better.
Now throw in the fact that BJ tires early, especially under pressure, and its no wonder he seems like a winnable fight for Nate.
Also, BJ got straight up out-classed for two rounds of a three round fight against Nick. Let’s not pretend he was in the fight.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012
Let’s also not assume too early Nate is suddenly on the level with Nick. IMO it would be competitive but NJ has to be the favorite.
KGNLuc - January 5, 2012
BJ coming of getting whipped and a long layoff?
That BJ?
Unabomberman - January 5, 2012

MichaelDavidSmith - January 5, 2012
Nate isn't that far off from Nick
He’s fought in the toughest division in sports and has had a very good strength of scheduled. Nate is only a step behind Nick, and is only 26
discoandherpes - January 5, 2012
Nate is a good LW...
But lets not get too high on the Diaz coolaid here people, A decent wrestler will dominate either brother and BJ has the tools to put either of them away when he fights with his head instead of his HUGE throbbing ego… His offensive wrestling and BJJ acumen would be more then enough to control a fight with either Diaz without getting submitted but his ego wont let him which is a shame.
Also his lack of REAL training is what truly stands in his way because his cardio is the weakest part of his game and now everyone knows it, BJ has lost fights but he has rarely been beaten, The other guy was just lucky he got tired before he could finish.
Chin Check - January 5, 2012
BJ could control the fight that way until he got tired, then Nick would pick him apart again. You can’t just be a “decent wrestler”, you have to be a top-control wizard with good takedowns and great cardio to beat Nick Diaz.
Bolshevik - January 5, 2012
Top control wizard?
Bahahahaha
Anyone with half decent MMA wrestling could ride either of those Diaz’s to a decision, If BJ can control FItch then i doubt he’d break a sweat controlling Diaz who was shit scared of Woodley before he managed to jump ship for match ups that didnt wreck him only to bump into the best MMA wrestler in existence and somehow people still think he has a chance? Wow.
As for gassing, Thats always a possibility but once you get the takedown and establish top control its the bottom guy busting his ass to get out and back up, Not the top controller so i see BJ lasting a 3 round fight just fine if that was his gameplan but we know it never will be because he “JUST SCRAP”’s to the detriment of his legacy.
Chin Check - January 5, 2012
So BJ Penn doesn’t have half decent MMA wrestling? I don’t agree. I saw Penn go for a takedown and back mount immediately against Fitch and Diaz, and he only got it on one of them. Doing that to Fitch for two consecutive rounds also caused BJ Penn to gas (but he was the one in dominant positions, so in your mind that must be pretty baffling, huh? LOL).

Bolshevik - January 6, 2012
In other words…
A. BJ has lost fights but he has rarely been beaten… until he was beaten.
B. BJ has lost fights but he has rarely been beaten, he’s just a decade long professional combat athlete that is too lazy to prepare the way he needs to.
There no such thing as an in shape or out of shape BJ anymore, he’s been consistently out of shape enough that it has defined his career and is the question mark before ALL of his fights. His opponents aren’t lucky he got tired. They were the better, more prepared fighter. You’re a fighter, you need cardio, that’s ground zero before anything else. That’s the ONE thing that a fighter has complete control over in a fight.
Seriously, to say a guy is lucky to win because the other guy didn’t put in the work is absurd.
Genki Sudo's Choreographer - January 6, 2012
The devil is in the details.
He lost the win but he was never beaten other then GSP II and i still maintain that without the size advantage that EVERYONE had over him in his WW fights he would have rolled them but they wore him down till he was too tired to mount any offense which is intelligent granted, But takes away from the true warrior spirit of a fight.
The only people that define BJ’s career by the way he gassed in some of his most recent fights are haters like you, Life is too short to care what haters think and haters are usually armchair warriors who have no idea what it means to compete much less at an elite level.
Chin Check - January 6, 2012
Seriously, hater?
I’m a BJ fan, I love the guy, but I’m not blinded by my respect for him to say something dumb like “the other guy was just lucky he got tired before he could finish” and now "and i still maintain that without the size advantage that EVERYONE had over him in his WW fights he would have rolled them "
they wore him down till he was too tired to mount any offense which is intelligent granted, But takes away from the true warrior spirit of a fight.
And whose fault is that? Oh yea, the guy that has no cardio. Maybe if he came in, you know, in shape, he wouldn’t be worn out by his opponents and fight through adversity aka that warrior spirit you like to mention. Speaking of which, watch the last round of that Edgar fight, he knows he’s losing the fight and shows no urgency. Oh yea, and about that quiting on his stool against GSP thing…
Never argue with a fool or people wont be able to tell the difference so with that, Im done here.

my favorite excuse for losing.
“if i never got tired i would have won.”
“if i could punch or kick or wrestle or grapple and not get tired i would have won.”
are you f’ing kidding?
conditioning is part of fighting.
this is a professional sport.
BJ couldn’t even hack it past ONE ROUND.
by the end of the 2nd round BJ was mentally checked out. remember how he looked up at the clock with like a min to go in the 2nd round.
he FOUGHT 8 minutes and Diaz was busting him up like an amature “because he ran out of gas”.
AFTER 8 MINUTES.
theworldsoldestsport - January 6, 2012
What is there left for BJ besides more money he doesn't need?
He doesn’t have the cardio to deal with Edgar or Bendo (I doubt this will improve; he’s not getting any younger), and he clearly can’t be the best at WW. It’s the right time to walk.
Machiel Van - January 5, 2012
Regain his self respect?
BJ is that guy who has managed to fail spectacularly at his highest aspirations.
Unabomberman - January 5, 2012
He’s had some disappointments, but I’m sure he’s still got self-respect. He should anyways, he’s certainly accomplished enough. I agree though he has failed in some of his biggest fights. I’ve always been unsure how to view BJ’s legacy.
Machiel Van - January 5, 2012
He's achieved enough to be very proud of
But he also had his mom stand up for him.
And I’m a huge BJ fan(hehe), just really turned off by this new attitude.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012

Unabomberman - January 5, 2012
I still dont get how people mock him for that...
His mother spoke of her own accord, in defense of a person whom she loves immensely and yet people spew bs like “Mommy’s boy” and “His mom fights battles for him”.
I love my mother and she loves me, Does that make me a pussy? So why all the tough guy macho bs?
Not a single one of you would have the stones to talk shit to BJ’s face yet he’s a pussy because you say so… Sounds pretty hilarious to me.
Chin Check - January 5, 2012
Calm down, sparky
Nobody called him a pussy. At all.
Anyone’s mother should be willing to say damn near anything to defend their son. That’s how moms work. Even serial killer’s mothers think their son is ‘a sweet boy’. That’s what makes it so funny.
TheFilt - January 5, 2012
BJ can still reclaim his former glory at lightweight. With all the challengers, I doubt Frankie’s gonna stay on top for long and I see BJ beating everyone else at 155. Only thing is, judging by this tweet he seems to want to come back to welterweight and prove himself against the bigger fighters..sigh
savik - January 5, 2012
I just see Bendo tearing him up at this point in their respective careers. I may very well be wrong though.
Machiel Van - January 5, 2012

Unabomberman - January 5, 2012
You mean the Bendo that got Showtime'd?
How short our MMA memories are… Shit just 300 some odd days ago you would have laughed your ass off if you heard someone say what you just did but now Bendo is some god because he got by Guida?
Wow… just wow.
I see BJ giving anyone not named Edgar a long night in the LW division.
Chin Check - January 5, 2012
The Bendo that got better in the same time span that BJ got worse.
Facts are bitches. I know, but there you go.
Unabomberman - January 5, 2012
Comparative level of competition...
Isnt even almost close, You stated your opinion which unfortunately for you is so far from fact you can even spell the word.
Clay Guida, Jim Miller and Mark Bocek dont have shit on Edgar, Hughes, Fitch and Diaz… But nice try.
Chin Check - January 6, 2012
Guida and Miller were running through the whole division, they were both top contenders when Bendo fought them.
Bendo beat two top contenders in a row while we were waiting for the almost year-long Edgar/Maynard log jam to clear up.
Rob Young - January 6, 2012
Guida was lay and praying his way through a bunch of "OK" fighters..
And Miller was legit but no world beater and he definitely underestimated Bendo and paid for it, Bendo did well and i like the guy but im under no illusions that he will beat Edgar, Maynard or even Pettis who isnt even top 10 at the moment.
And further more, Neither Miller nor Bendo hold a light to any of the competition BJ has faced and Fitch would grapplefuck the living SHIT out of Diaz, Let alone achieving a draw like BJ.
Chin Check - January 6, 2012
In short:
You Heart BJ. Ok. I go you. Argumenting is dead, though.
Unabomberman - January 6, 2012
Pretty much...
Glad we cleared that up.
Chin Check - January 7, 2012
I love Pettis
but I think Bendo takes him in a rematch. I also can see Bendo beating Edgar, not sure about Maynard or BJ though.
SentientAndroid - January 6, 2012
Lets not pretend Guida is an elite fighter
discoandherpes - January 6, 2012
I don't think he is
but for Bendo to handle and shrug off Guida’s relentless, grinding wrestling game is really impressive.
SentientAndroid - January 6, 2012
Actually I don’t think Ben got that much better at all I just don’t think he matches up good with Pettis. I think every time those 2 would fight that it would be close.
Shocbomb - January 6, 2012
Same
I don’t think there’s a Bendo 2.0. His mentallity may have gotten sharpened due to the loss to Pettis and coming into the UFC, but for the most part I think he’s still the same fighter that he was in the WEC. The thing is, Bendo, Cerrone and Pettis have always been really good fighters, but you know the old adage, if you aint in the UFC you aint shit.
SentientAndroid - January 6, 2012
You are so so correct, Yes I would probably right now pick Ben to win that fight but I can very easily see ways BJ could win also, it’s not out the question at all on a scramble that BJ gets Bendo’s back like Pettis did and RNC him, if BJ came into that fight in top shape I could very well see him winning a close decision also.
Getting off the Bendo match all in all It’s quite sad that 1st Frankie fight was judged so horribly wrong, becasue BJ vs Frankie itself could of been a good MMA trilogy.
Shocbomb - January 6, 2012
The thing is, it could be a long time before BJ gets the chance to fight for a title.
alicks - January 5, 2012
Well...
I guess this is the part where it’s hard to be a BJ fan. For all the good things he brings, BJ can be one of the most annoying fighters ever.
Also, I’m somewhat amused that no one blinks at the phrase “tweet hard.” Weird lingo these days.
crazybones - January 5, 2012
lol, oh BJ.
Dude acts like the last time we saw him he was pushing off of Bryon Russell and hitting a game winner on the opponents floor for all the chips.
In reality, the last time we saw him he had his tail between his legs and took his ball and went home because other people were being mean to him.
BJ is the typical annoying rich kid friend you had growing up who bets you he can do something, so you take him up on it, then when he fails, he says, “BUT WE DIDN’T SHAKE ON IT!” then makes up a lie about how your father molested him one time.
BJ gets smashed on and instead of admitting defeat and working on things, he puts his head down and stares at his hands in disbelief, takes a nap, then wakes up and makes excuses. He’s had everything handed to him his whole life so if something goes wrong, there’s no way it’s his fault. Has to be someone else’s fault.
The grease gate with his mom at the hearing was pretty embarrassing, but him accusing Nick Diaz of “wrestling him” to a win, and that’s the reason BJ lost is just straight hilarious. Nick Diaz being accused of wrestling someone and that’s the only way they won? LOL. Get outta here, BJ. You’re going to use the biggest weakness people feel your opponent has as the reason he beat you? LOL. GET OUT.

av1o3 - January 5, 2012
Dear lord…I don’t think BJ thinks he has ever lost. So delusional. I love watching the guy fight because he is so talented, but come on.
List of his excuses:
Jens Pulver – Took the fight too soon
Uno draw – Judges screwed him
Lyoto Machida – He was way bigger
Matt Hughes 2 – Injured
GSP – Actually won, judges screwed him
GSP 2 – GSP only won because he greased
Edgar – Sick, and judges screwed him
Edgar 2 – The only one that I haven’t heard him make an excuse about.
Fitch draw – Judges screwed him
Diaz – Diaz was bigger and he fought cowardly (WTFBBQ?)
Jeffrey McCrum - January 5, 2012
Well
Uno- Judges really did screw him
Lyoto- Is obviously way bigger
GSP 1- Did get screwed
Edgar 1- Did get screwed
Fitch- Did get screwed
If your list proves anything is that BJ should just fucking stay at LW.
av1o3 - January 5, 2012
I agree with him on the Uno, Lyoto, and Edgar 1 fights, but the 1st GSP fight was razor thin and could have gone either way, and the Fitch fight should have been a draw in my opinion. BJ won the first two, and the third was a clear 10-8 in my mind.
Jeffrey McCrum - January 5, 2012
I'm not sure about the Fitch one
Even though Fitch threw a lot of punches, a lot of them were just glances and they weren’t doing enough damage.
av1o3 - January 5, 2012
The Fitch one was very close
although Fitch was using pillow punches he learned from Jake Shields, he did maintain a dominant position for the entire round. BJ mounted zero offence and wasn’t working that hard to escape (due to fatigue). That round could be argued as 10-8.
I think he took the Edgar I, but lost GSP I

Robert V-U - January 5, 2012
Between this and Jon Jones' sudden claim to fight 4 times in 2012
does anyone else get the impression that Dana White is giving some financial incentive for these guys to step it up? Given the relative lack of draws with GSP and Silva out for a while and Lesnar retiring…. something seems suspicious. Either way, I don’t care. This is great.
Democritus - January 5, 2012

Taking the Ortiz route I see. You dissapoint me BJ.

- Currently recovering from Mad Cow Disease
etc.
av1o3 - January 5, 2012

Fedor is too worn by way too many fights, and getting old.

BJ Penn is obviously
a fighter and man that runs heavily on emotion. Emotion is a powerful tool and something that has made BJ a lot of who he is as a fighter. Nick Diaz is also a fighter who needs to have strong emotions going into a fight. I have no problem with BJ making an emotionally charged statement about wanting to fight, the thing that concerns me about it is that it seems as if BJ is trying to force himself into the mindset now where it use to just be his natural mentality. As a man grows older and has children it’s a normal progression to drift away from the hyper aggressive competitive behavior he had in his twenties. All fighters come to this point that BJ is approaching now, the point where they start to lose their edge. Some fighters lose the physical edge first like speed or reflexes and some like BJ lose the burning emotional fire. Obviously skill wise BJ is one of the greatest the sport has ever seen and throughout his career his performances have been dictated by emotional and mental drive not talent. Right now it appears to me BJ is fighting within himself to hang on to the last of the emotion that made him a killer and he may be able to for a while longer but it’s a losing battle. There is no shame it in, he has earned the respect I assume he initially set out to get.
CRWHITLOCK - January 5, 2012
Come on BJ
If your gonna complain that he is bigger then you then don’t fight in that weight class. Calling Diaz a coward after Diaz went toe to toe bell to bell with BJ? Wasn’t BJ the only one to shoot for a TD? (I could be remembering that wrong) This is just class less. What a sore loser.

I love BJ’s fights but this is just a bullshit complaint. I think BJ is a better fighter (skills-wise), but as far as conditioning or heart… Nick deserved to win. Quit bitching and train harder.

Seriously....
when are they gonna start perma-banning anyone who announces their retirement.
If you say it, do it!
mentasm - January 5, 2012
I’m starting to think Nick Diaz fans aren’t the same tight-knit group of charming, weed-infused ragamuffins we used to be. But he’s still my favorite MMA fighter, boxer and cyclist.
Bolshevik - January 5, 2012
One word to describe this is..
PATHETIC.
Could you atleast accept one of your losses instead of farting nonsense?
You wanted to stand and bang with Nick this is what you get, accept your loss and you know what ? close down your sherdog clone website as well!
elmojo - January 5, 2012
oh Bj
What happened to that “respect” he had for Nick? I guess a beating eliminates respect
Sonnens Political Adviser - January 5, 2012 via mobile
Oh man.
I’m a BJ mark but I can’t even defend this.
BrothaDarkness - January 5, 2012
BJ looks great in fights if he grabs the momentum early and things go his way. But he gets discouraged way too easily when things aren’t going his way.
He should def drop to 155 – and am sure with the right nutritionist he could make 145 although not sure he’d do that given he loves to be chubby.
taptomyarmbar - January 5, 2012
My favorite part is how he tags Jon Fitch by name in his tweet
mthom - January 5, 2012
A modivated bj is a dangerous bj! Bla Bla bla
frosty31 - January 5, 2012
At least his fights are exciting...
……I’d love to see him fight Diaz again……Fitch….not so much.
Taiter - January 5, 2012
Penn needs to retire - this sport has passed him by.
lordrelay - January 5, 2012 via mobile
Always amazes me when......
…people make comments like that. He needs to work harder….but it passed him by? I disagree with that 100%
Taiter - January 5, 2012
I'll believe BJ is motivated when I see him fight at 145
He’ll be in good shape
BrandtShaft! - January 5, 2012
I’m a huge fan of BJ and was sad to see him go out like he did, but I wish he would stay retired. I don’t like seeing guys tarnish their legacy – just like I would’ve liked to see Fedor retire after the Bigfoot loss instead of getting KO’d by Hendo.
FreeFocus - January 6, 2012
BJ Penn is old news. Retire when you still have a shred of dignity left.
daftshadow - January 6, 2012
eat turd daft

four20 - January 6, 2012
YEAH! You FOOB!!! (New insult created today, and I’m gonna trademark it first!)

BJ probably hadn't seen that picture til recently
He’s probably been spending time with his family recovering from the first beating of his life. He’s lost fights but never been disfigured and he got disfigured by Diaz and threw his hands up and walked away. Wouldn’t be surprised if he hadn’t gone back to look at the fight during that healing period.
Now he’s all healed up and ready to fight again and he’s relived the fight and he just had an outburst of emotion after seeing that picture. Probably will back off on that in the next little while. Who would be a good fight for him? Not Nick Diaz, that’d be stupid.
Luke Nelson - January 6, 2012
I was holding back
the tears when BJ got his ass handed to him and said he was done. That was not the way I wanted to see his career end. I hope he comes back with a vengeance.
ScoreCardOTN - January 6, 2012 via mobile
BJ will always complain like a whiner when he loses.
in his biography he talks about how hard it was riding his bicycle to train twice a day, not having to work, just doing jiu-jitsu for 4 years, winning the mundials, and training full-time.
what a joke.
theworldsoldestsport - January 6, 2012
Go ahead, try to tell me that training twice a day under Andre Pederneiras isn't "work".
Try to tell me that training fighting full time isn’t hard work. Try to tell me that you wouldn’t be so exhausted from all that training, that something like riding your bike to the gym doesn’t become a chore after a while. Try to tell me that winning the mundials isn’t a huge accomplishment, requiring unbelievable discipline and hard work.
And I’ll tell you that you’re the joke.
