Even if the UFC is more of a known entity today than it was five years ago, many of their lower and mid-level fighters still keep additional jobs to help pay the bills. Jacob Volkmann is one of those fighters, keeping up with a chiropractic business and a wrestling coach position at White Bear Lake High School in Minnesota.
He'll have a bit more free time on his hands as he revealed on Twitter that he's again been placed on administrative leave from the school following a joke he made about U.S. President Barack Obama at UFC 141.
Following his unanimous decision win over Efrain Escudero on the Facebook prelims, Volkmann told Joe Rogan that Obama needed a "glassectomy". Rogan asked what that was and was told, "It's where they remove the belly button and put a piece of glass in there so you can see what you're doing while your head's up your ass."
Volkmann famously was visited by the Secret Service after saying someone needed to "
After losing his first two UFC fights, Volkmann (14-2) dropped to lightweight and is on a five fight win streak.

Won't this guy ever learn to shut his mouth or at least chill on the Obama jokes that keeps getting him in hot water?!

Victor Rodriguez - January 6, 2012
Freedom of speech has nothing to do with it.
The school can decide they don’t want one of their coaches spouting nonsense in a public forum. If a public school put him on leave for saying he didn’t like Obama’s policies it would be one thing, but he said something incredibly stupid and has to live with the consequences.
Phildo - January 6, 2012
this.
volkmann, being an apparent libertarian, should know this and support it.
Rob Young - January 6, 2012
And by the same logic, we have the right to think the school is run by incompetent hacks who support incompetent presidents
unambig - January 6, 2012
You have every right to think and say that
That doesn’t make the school district in violation of any constitutional rights.
Chris Hall - January 7, 2012
Nobody violated his constitutional rights
What the school did is demonstrate an appalling lack of consideration for the expression of those rights in his free time, away from his place of employ.

As someone who works a school
everyone knows you keep your politics in the break-room with the other employees.
You don’t spout it out in a public forum because parents will start to wonder what your like with the kids. And normally parents are very much against other adults trying to influence their kid’s political views, even if they agree with person. The fact that Volkmann doesn’t present his opinion in a real, inform critique of the President’s politics and makes crass jokes just makes that worst. (not saying he isn’t informed, just doesn’t present himself that way)

My biggest problem with Volkmann's "joke"
Is that it wasn’t funny. He needs some new material. To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld, his jokes about Obama don’t offend me as a Democrat, they offend me as a comedian.
MichaelDavidSmith - January 6, 2012
My problem with it is he needs to keep his stupid fucking politics out of my MMA. If he wants to say shit like that he should just go to a rally and dangle a few dozen bags of Earl Grey off his hat.

He has made zero intellectual points about policy or politics.
Volkmann talks like a guy who gets punched in the head for a living. Big surprise.
pdl - January 7, 2012
What measures? What, specifically, is the problem?
What exact issues is Volkman raising that he, and by extension you, are so up in arms about? I would have to imagine that being a chiropractor, Volkman’s main beef concerns the ACA and its impact on healthcare. Funny thing is, none of the major provisions go into effect until 2014. So what exactly is the problem? Less Medicare reimbursement? The requirement to have an effective electronic medical record? What?
And don’t tell me the biggest issue is “uncertainty”. That’s bullshit. A tsunami devastated Japan and created massive logistic crises for a bunch of industries for months and end. Those industries are still around, so I think a 24 month heads up on some fairly direct modifications can be absorbed by the bloated U.S. healthcare system.
If Volkman’s main problem is the fact that the world seems hard and unfair, its because he’s not that smart to begin with. And that’s not Obamas fault.

MichaelDavidSmith - January 6, 2012
1800 is fairly standard for an assistant coach at a high school
I was the head coach of a high school lacrosse team here in Chicago, and I was only paid slightly more than that for 4 months of seasonal work.

Then he’ll end up looking like he did against Kampmann….totally outclassed.
SSreporters - January 6, 2012
I'm not so sure
Volkmann’s style is entirely based on being able to outwrestle and control his opponent. At WW he had a distinct size and strength disadvantage that limited him severely. He has out grappled several tough grapplers at LW, leading me to believe he could hang with most anyone in the division. Not saying he would win, but he’s like Guida, a tough fight no matter who you are.

I’m not here to offend (with this comment, anyway), I’m here for the interesting and oftentimes humorous things I read on here. But, no one is above ridicule, just like no one is above getting their knuckles rapped by their employer for putting them in an unseemly light. If I broke policy, I apologize. Derek Suboticki - January 6, 2012
Kids need to learn ...
… to follow the rules.
They’ll need to know that in college, in the military, in the workplace, etc.
Question the rules, argue about the rules, whatever. But if you don’t follow them, there are consequences. If the school doesn’t set an example with Volkmann, what are they supposed to learn?
I’m sorry — this post wasn’t funny. But neither is Volkmann. Really, when you get right down it, his complaint is about how Obamacare affects his chiropractor business. As if Obama sat down and said, “You know, insuring everyone would be nice. But that’s my second priority. What I really want to do with this landmark legislation — my very first priority as president — is to screw the chiropractors.”
So three cheers for Volkmann. He’s the Rosa Parks of … his own take on how insurers should handle his business.
Beau Dure - January 6, 2012
This is unbelievable.
Political comentary or political satire is a key part of American politics. He basically said the president has his head up his ass. So What? I voted for Obama and will do so again even though I think he is a mediocre president, But expressing your political opinion OUTSIDE of your job should not be punishable. IF he was doing this to his students at school thats one thing. But you cant punish someone for some political opinion they said outside of work.
It would be like if your job fired you for registering for a member of a different political party than your boss. Or if you got disciplined at work for donating to a political campaign your boss doesn’t like. Thats illegal and un-American.

So expressing your political opinion can be against “the rules” in the United States now? What country are we in?
Bakuto - January 6, 2012
you can express your opinion without saying the President has his head up his ass. Especially if you work at a school and have a very large public platform.
Phildo - January 6, 2012
Yes you can, but if you are not saying anything illegal how is it okay for the empolyer to regulate your political speech. What if he ended a sentence with a preposition in his political speech, could the reprimand him for that too? Political speech in an offensive manner is still political speech.
Bakuto - January 6, 2012
if he was an english teacher i’m sure they would.
He isn’t, he’s a wrestling coach who said he would stop making public, moronic comments about the President, he didn’t.
Phildo - January 6, 2012
What is moronic about saying the President has his head up his ass? Its a common figure of speech.
Bakuto - January 6, 2012
It’s a pretty silly figure of speech, especially for someone who works at a school, especially who has already been told, and agreed to stop making ridiculous, public, comments.
Phildo - January 6, 2012
And if you dont think every politician in Washington DC has their heads up their asses, then you dont live in the real world.
Bakuto - January 6, 2012
they probably do, doesn’t mean a teacher is going to get away with saying it on TV.
Phildo - January 6, 2012
I’m a journalist. I can’t have yard signs or bumper stickers endorsing candidates. Part of the job.
And when your first attempt at political commentary draws Secret Service attention, your employer has every right to say, “Hey, knock it off.”
Beau Dure - January 7, 2012
Hell yes it can, if your employer says you can’t and you agree to it.
Tedd Welch - January 7, 2012
That part depends on the state. Some states have different rules and laws. I know in Illinois, Chicago, specifically, certain unions won’t let you have political bumper stickers except for the ones they endorse. I was told about that during the 2004 campaign. You could only endorse candidate A, and cover your hardhat with that particular sticker, but not candidate b. You would be reprimanded and or sent off the job. But hey, no politics on here, unless you support candidate A, and saying anything about candidate b will get you reprimanded and or sent odd the site.

Unions arn't employers.
Bakuto - January 6, 2012
I come from a non union part of the country, and my wife just explained THAT to me. DAMN, I am having a rough day. But, learning is FUN!
Mr. Socko - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Sorry, bakuto, sometimes I just don’t understand certain things and need explanation. I would never work for a union, personally, but hey, today is my dumbass day, we all have them.
Mr. Socko - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Wasnt trying to be an ass about it. But I’m pretty sure the laws are different. I just cant believe the number of people on here thinking it is okay for an employer to punish an employee for a political opinion.
Bakuto - January 6, 2012
No offense taken, call me out anytime I’m wrong on here! Better to be corrected and then be able to be right later on than to keep being wrong and continually looking stupid! No hate here, nothing but love…
Mr. Socko - January 6, 2012 via mobile
political opinion != talking about wanting to mutilate the president’s stomach as well as breaking his limbs

Being wrong like me will make you look ill informed, right Irod? At least I’m big enough to say it.
Mr. Socko - January 6, 2012 via mobile
"and will do so again even though I think he is a mediocre president"
You are what’s wrong with politics, muchacho

this
I will not discuss my specific political beliefs, as it will add nothing to the conversation and is against the rules of BE, but if you are going to vote, please make an effort to educate yourself, and vote for someone you truly feel will do the best job. If no candidate is going to do a good job in your opinion, then write in a vote. But please, do not vote for a candidate in any election just because they have a tie you like, they are in the party that your parents, grandparents and great grandparents voted for, or “sound like they are smart”, or the many other ridiculous reasons I have heard from people across the entire political spectrum. Put in some effort to do your civic duty to be an INFORMED voter. If you do not have the time to do so, or are unwilling to do so, then leave the voting up to others. Also, please abstain from making bad jokes about politics in post-fight speeches, regardless of if you are conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, communist, fascist, Labour or Torrie, or Green Party. (I forget all of the Canadian Parties. Haven’t seen CTV, CityTV, or CBC since I have left WNY.)
Andy Anderson - January 7, 2012
I just don't vote
discoandherpes - January 7, 2012
funny how he told Karyn Bryant in one of his last post-fight interviews that he was instructed not to mention the name of the school he coaches for. oh well.
Victor Rodriguez - January 6, 2012
I heard the post fight interview.
There was no joke.

the bad thing is
that the guy was not funny at all.. so the question is… was he supposed to be?
With a FOX deal and stuff its a wonder he is not sacked right from the UFC indeed.
szanpan - January 7, 2012
He should have been banned from high school wrestling coaching or any field involving children for looking way too much like a creepy child molester
Robust23 - January 7, 2012
"-ectomy" means removel, so they would be removing a piece of glass, not inserting one.
Isn’t he supposed to be a doctor?
Scott C. Broussard - January 7, 2012
Chiropractor
Someone who can cure cancer by making back adjustments. So, no.
Pantherhare - January 7, 2012
Which basically gets to the heart of the matter — Volkmann’s upset that whoever wrote the part of the massive legislation (which was certainly not Obama himself) dealing with chiropractors doesn’t seem to view chiropractors the way Volkmann wants.
Beau Dure - January 7, 2012
Nope
Derek Suboticki - January 7, 2012
in my country which is democratic
its not allowed to make jokes on the height (smallness) of our president . There was a documentary which many says was made up in Russia with some criminals and the reporter has jokingly asked one man for how much he would kill the president of Hungary- it has become a big big scandal :)
szanpan - January 7, 2012
This is what you get when a runaway legal system scares everyone into silence because you might get sued crosses with normal, non-political guys cracking jokes.
- Nobody gets better off of his leave.
- The kids end up worse.
- Obama doesn’t even know who Jacob Volkmann is. If he did he would not care about the joke. Having jokes made about you comes with being human. Having jokes made about you on TV comes with being the president.
But no, lets all pretend we hate jokes. Let’s all pretend we have some sort of hollywood-fictional high morality instead. Let’s pretend Obama never said ‘I said not now mom, I’m in the goddamned can!’
MyrkN - January 7, 2012
The first time he did it he was told by the school not to make remarks like that again, he did it anyway and got punished by the school for it. If you shit on your desk and your boss tell you not to shit on your desk, are you gonna shit on your desk again because this is America?
IRodC - January 7, 2012
+1
he had to of atleast had an idea that there would be backlash, but any pr is good pr to some ppl
four20 - January 7, 2012
So… Nothing happened?
He didn’t work for a week and still got paid
He just got some free holiday and people are moaning
Cunny - January 7, 2012
That was the first time he did it, sometime last year. Now it’s a new situation.
Horselover Fat - January 7, 2012
When are white people going to catch a break?
I don’t think people realize how tough it is to be a white male living in America in 2011.
