Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos has been the center of MMA discussion since the CSAC announced her positive drug test for stanazolol yesterday. She has been stripped of her title, and likely caused her division to be folded. Today, she released a statement through MMAprime.TV:
"I am ultimately responsible for everything I put in my body, and at the end of the day, there is no excuse for having a prohibited substance in my system. I do not condone the use of any performance enhancing drugs by myself or any other professional athlete, and willingly accept the penalties and fines that have been handed down to me by the California State Athletic Commission and those of the StrikeForce/Zuffa organization.""While I was preparing myself for my last fight I was having a difficult time cutting weight and used a dietary supplement that I was assured was safe and not prohibited from use in sports competition. It was never my intention to obtain an unfair advantage over Hiroko, mislead StrikeForce, the Commission or my fans. I train harder than any fighter in MMA and do not need drugs to win in the cage, and I have proven this time and time again! My only mistake is not verifying the diet aid with my doctor beforehand, and understanding that it was not approved for use in the ring." "Unfortunately in the end I suffer the consequences and must accept the responsibility for my actions.""I will do everything I can to show my fans that I can still compete at the professional level without the use of any prohibited substances, and ask God's forgiveness for my mistake."
Is this the end for Cyborg? She's suspended for a year, likely has no division to come back to, and if she was having problems cutting to 145, 135 seems out of reach.

Don’t most diet pills contain Winstrol?

Stanozolol
aka Winstrol is a CUTTING agent. It helps pull water out of your system and gives you a lean physique, as opposed to a bulky physique. Taking Winstrol to lose weight and get ripped makes sense
OneFitchTwoFitchRedFitchBlueFitch - January 7, 2012
Ok
I can’t remember what he took now, but is this the same stuff Alves got popped for?
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
I don't think so
Alvarez was busted for a straight diuretic, wiki says Spironolactone.
joker24 - January 7, 2012
Ok
cool was wondering. I knew he was taking something to help lose weight.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
Stanzolol was what Bonnar got popped for a few years back. I think that Leben was too.
MicahtheCynic - January 7, 2012
They need blood testing for this shit
Sure she got nailed and deserves everything that is coming her way, but from everything i have read about piss testing is does not give a true picture of what is in a person’s system at one time.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
It's strange too
bc (and I’m just assuming here) that someone with as much history and knowledge on the subject as her, would get caught by a PISS test. That stuff is pretty easy to get out of your system in the kind of quantities that urine tests can detect.
Something unrelated but kind of interesting, in Brazil steroids are very popular with women.
OneFitchTwoFitchRedFitchBlueFitch - January 7, 2012
I have one hypothesis
For the short time the WWE was courting her she could have been bulking up like crazy. Then once she resigned with Strikeforce she had to get the weight off quick, thus turned to shit she was unsure about. Took it without looking into it and hoped for the best.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
That's actually possible but
it was announced a while ago that she had signed a new contract. And with Winstol itself being a diuretic agent, it has a decently short half-life. So it should have been out of her system pretty rapidly. She might have upped the dosage to drop some fast weight and preserve muscle mass for this fight. Who knows
OneFitchTwoFitchRedFitchBlueFitch - January 7, 2012
I was thinking, now could be wrong, that she figured she do a little carido it would slim her down, once she got so close to fight time (say a month out) she started to panic. Looked for the best weigh cutting agent she could find and did not want to take time to have it checked out.
I would say “did not have time”, but there should always be time to get this stuff checked out. Also, she probably did not want to pull out seeing as it was her first pay cheque in ages.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
Sure.
Hey, I got a couple bridges for sale, you interested?
Shotokanman - January 7, 2012
You could probably get away with only piss testing
If there was legitimate threat that you would be randomly tested any time of the year. Zuffa/UFC could wreck the PED thing pretty quickly with a few million a year tops. They have 400 fighters under contract, a drug test costs something like $200. They could guarantee that every fighter was tested at least once a year at a random time (400 tests). Then have a random number generator decide to test 20% of the fighters under contract every month (960 tests), and then test them the day they sign a fight contract (~600 tests) and you’re talking about 2000 tests per year=$400k, say $500k for the sake of round numbers.
Designate say 100 testing centers around the world that fighters have to get to, figure getting those relationships/infrastructure in place costs you a $mil on top. 5 people making $100k to manage this thing (I have no idea what would be so complicated but whatever), another $500k. A $mil in travel costs for those guys and you’re up to $3 mil total. What would I be missing? And if fighters can’t stay within a 47 hour trip to the 100 biggest centers of MMA in the world, then they need to move. Sure it’d be a hassle, but deal with it.
Who in their right mind is going to be juicing when they are expecting to get tested at least two times randomly + when they sign for a fight + any commission testing. $3 million to practically kill (detectable anyway…) PED use has to be worth it from a business perspective right?
But who wants that when “IT’S THE COMMISSION’S PROBLEM DAMNIT.”
joker24 - January 7, 2012
Yeah, that could work as well
but to dodge all of that i believe blood testing would be best. Random testing would help to cut down on it though.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
Plus it would be nice if they would test for HGH, which is only detectable in blood testing.
Bolshevik - January 7, 2012
Yeah that too.
As much as i love Sonnen, blood testing would kill the whole TRT excuse as well. We would find out who really has an issue and who just wants the extra juice.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012

Schwizzles - January 7, 2012 via mobile
no
the stuff Alves took just takes water out of your skin and system so you pee all the time. The stuff she was taking allows you to put on lean muscle mass while at the same time shedding excess water. It’s generally what people use in cycles when they’re getting ready for shows and/or when it’s beach season. Not a bulker, just hard striated muscles, with thin skin to show them off.
OneFitchTwoFitchRedFitchBlueFitch - January 7, 2012

Can you take winstrol and just lose weight while doing circuit training & cardio… And it basically will just rip you up but not add mass? Kinda the anti steroid?
RECE ROCK - January 7, 2012 via mobile
winny has anabolic properties
Its not as powerfully Anabolic as deca or some others, but if you’ve never done a cycle and you use it, you can actually gain some mass while also burning fat, which is just ridiculous.

I think that's the first
acknowledgement of having watched Mean Girls I’ve seen on Bloody Elbow Mr. Smith. And for the record, yes I saw it, and yes it was decent. I mean, if you’re not in love with Lizzy Caplan I don’t know what to tell you.
David Castillo - January 7, 2012
All heterosexual males should have watched that movie. It was back when Lindsay Lohan was still a redhead, curvy, teenager, and in general hot as fuck. GREAT MOVIE!
Horselover Fat - January 7, 2012
Here's the thing about Mean Girls
It was marketed all wrong: They promoted it as “Lindsay Lohan is the hot new girl in school!” And that made it sound lame, which is why I never saw it in the theater and had no interest in seeing it on DVD.
But then a friend gave me the DVD and I figured what the hell, and it was great — and nothing at all like the ads suggested. It was great writing from Tina Fey, great acting from Rachel McAdams and Lizzy Caplan, a really funny performance in a small role by Tim Meadows, and more.
The way to market that movie should have been, “Tina Fey has written a biting satire of high school politics.” But that was before Tina Fey was big and Linday Lohan was the star, and they made it look like a dumb movie for dumb teenagers. And it’s not that at all.
MichaelDavidSmith - January 7, 2012
It is a great movie
IKiIIed007 - January 7, 2012

With Carano most likely not coming back and now Cyborg suspended for 1 year they will probably on do 135lb fights for the rest of the Showtime contract and then just end it and let Bellator or whoever else run womens mma.
bigdmmafan - January 7, 2012
She'll be able to make 135..
Once she’s off the juice and loses some of that
manmuscle mass.Danthemmaman - January 7, 2012
Doubt it.
If she was using steroids just to cut to 145, she’ll die cutting to 135.
McKinley B. Noble - January 7, 2012
or she could just lose bulk. Changing weight classes is not always about cutting weight. People taller than Cyborg can make 135, she probably could, but it would take a lot of work.
Phildo - January 7, 2012
This would be shitty if it were true, but it sounds like a lot of excuses.
If you were taking steroids, just admit it. Telling the truth isn’t going to make the situation any worse than it already is.
Warbreezy - January 7, 2012
Has any athlete ever done that?
I can’t think of anyone, ever, who just said, “Yes, I was cheating, period.” Usually even when they admit it they have some kind of excuse like, “But I was only doing it to help recover from an injury because I love the sport so much and wanted to get back out there for my fans.”

Thank Science!
Through a miracle of chemistry, it was just a diet pill that somehow metabolized into a compound that appeared to be a steroid used specifically for cutting weight.
Good thing, otherwise it would have looked she was taking steroids.
TheFilt - January 7, 2012
I'm not sure she was saying that all she took was a diet pill that magically turned into steroids.
But that she took a supplement that she wasn’t aware had steroids in it, and didn’t bother to ask any questions.
Warbreezy - January 7, 2012
Highly, highly
highly unlikely that there’s a diet pill out there containing stanozolol.
If there was it would say same to effect of anabolic steroid on the bottle.
There are, however, legal supplements that will metabolize into banned substances after enter the blood stream.

Sir Smoke-A-Lot - January 7, 2012

Yeah it makes sense
but still does not cover why an athlete would not get this shit checked out before even dreaming about putting it in ones body. T Silva same thing, used something he was not sure of them tried to cover it up.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
Total sarcasm but I suppose it IS a cutting agent. However, stanozol/winstrol does not equal dietary supplement. I would say there’s quite a huge difference between a steroid and something one would call a "dietary supplement.
Sir Smoke-A-Lot - January 7, 2012
I think everyone here would agree
Its called ‘lying’.
Cyborg’s doing it.
TheFilt - January 7, 2012
Steroid excuses are always entertaining.
I think she would have found better success in the deficient testicles excuse.
Sir Smoke-A-Lot - January 7, 2012
See someone could not be telling the truth, yet at the same time be wrong.
She calls it what she does because that’s what she was using it as. She made the supid mistake of not getting it checked out for banned substances before using it. Sherk took a polygraph and passed because he was telling the truth about his knowledge of what he was doing.
Either way she still cheated, so the shit storm to follow is her fault.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
Could Be telling the truth
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
I don’t know, but personally I don’t get why all these dietary supplement manufacturers are so cavalier about adding controlled substances to their products. You never hear about cough syrup manufacturers putting heroin in their stuff on accident.
toxic - January 7, 2012
Actually i take blood pressure meds and when i was piss tested for a oil feild job when i told them i take that medication they said i may fail due to a banned substance. Also poppy seeds can cost you a job that requires a piss test as well, makes you test positive for herion
I have been taking Blood pressure meds since i was 8 and when i wanted to take something to help me with work outs i asked about protein powders and other types of supplements i was told that a great deal of them have a lot of stuff that, to someone with regular kidney fuction probably would not matter, is really hard for the body to deal with. After being told it was not an option for me i stopped looking into these things so i am sure someone here who knows a ton more than i do.
Now it could also be the doctors were just being careful and not allowing me to take anything, but i asked a number of times and got the same answer.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
The amount of actual poppy in a poppy seed is so miniscule
you’d have to eat a truckload of them to piss hot.
OmoPlata - January 7, 2012
Not according to the testers.
When you set up the apointment for the test they ask have you ate a poppy seed bagel in the past 2 weeks. If you answer yes they tell you to call back because they fear you will fail. Also, while you work out there they tell you to avoid at all costs (some do others do not care) because if you have an incident you have to be pissed tested right away and if you fail you are fired on the spot and banned from getting a job on the sites for a year or more depending on how bad the accident is.
Riley_96 - January 7, 2012
Right
It’s a liability issue. If you prove they screwed the pooch only because you ate a poppy seed bagel, they are going to be on the hook for a massive lawsuit that cost you reputation, salary etc. Just the threat of that means they make damn sure to avoid even the slightest hint of that crap excuse.
joker24 - January 7, 2012
Good
I’d be pissed if that Seinfeld episode was inaccurate
Cunny - January 7, 2012
No.
From Wikipedia:
“…it would require about 100 poppy seed bagels to reach enough to cause a positive (failed) test result at normal cutoffs”
also:
“NIDA 5 test, which was raised from 300 ng/mL to 2,000 ng/mL in 1998 in order to avoid such false positives from poppy seeds”
OmoPlata - January 9, 2012
“poppy seeds do not serve as an alibi for heroin: a unique metabolite (6-monoacetylmorphine) is produced from heroin use that is never produced from consuming any other substance, let alone poppy seeds. Modern tests can thus readily determine whether it was heroin, should someone try to claim he merely ate poppy seeds.”
OmoPlata - January 9, 2012
OMG, I Called It Perfectly
In the article first announcing she got caught, I wrote “Anyone wanna guess how long it will take for her to blame tainted nutritional supplements? Anything except it was her fault and she knowingly took them.”
Well, it didn’t take her long for that predictionm to pan out. I knew she wouldn’t own up to it. How many athletes (especially baseball players) blame the ol’ tainted supplements problem at the time they’re caught, and then in their memoires admit they knew they were taking steroids? Quite a few. Man, where can I get some of those supplements that will give me a body as ripped as hers?

This type of statement by everybody that gets popped needs to stop
“I didn’t know what I was taking”, “I didn’t know it was a banned substance”, ect, ect, ect
It’s a bullshit excuse. You’re a professional athlete. It’s YOUR responsibility to ensure what you are doing is within the guidelines. There are ways to ensure what you’re taking isn’t banned.
If you don’t know what is in something or are going to use something that you haven’t used before, do more than just take it. Regardless of who gives it to you or prescribes it. Get in touch your manager, doctor, promoter AND the commission… Yes ALL of these people, preferably in the same email thread. Send them the name of what you’re thinking about taking and a list of all the ingredients, then WAIT to hear back from them ALL, before you take it.
This isn’t that hard. You’re a pro, you know better. Coming out with a statement of ignorance after getting caught is garbage.
soilworker - January 7, 2012
