Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal had one fight left on his contract going into this weekend's fight with Lorenz Larkin, but he was able to do something about that. Mo has re-signed with the organization for another four fights, according to MMA Fighting (via Mo's manager):
Muhammed Lawal, who meets Lorenz Larkin at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine Saturday night, has signed a new four-fight contract with Strikeforce, according to Lawal's manager Mike Kogan.
It appears, at least according to Mo himself, that he didn't have much choice in the matter:
He also stated that he wasn't mad though, because he was "bout to get paid". If Mo is able to get by Larkin tonight, he'd definitely be in contention for a shot at the vacant LHW title he once held. And it looks like he'll be a staple of the Strikeforce 205 division for quite a while.

King Mo is so smart, we know nothing and are all idiots in comparison to his genius

notice that he said “some of ya’ll mutha*****z is stupid!” not “all ya’ll mutha*****z is stupid!”.

I blame it on his bad grammar

I doubt he is a king Mo fan, after all Mo hates rap
Afrotikiman - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Another reason to like King Mo!

Larkin watch out for headbutts.

You had to try and crash your own party, didn’t you Burke? :P
Machiel Van - January 9, 2012
Interesting how he cant leave SF
yet Wredum, Bigfoot, Hendo, Shields, Diaz, Le, Overeem and the rest of the HW division have jumped to the UFC.
i wonder what reason Lawal is told why he cant leave. Makes the divisions too thin?
Ricardo Arguello - January 7, 2012
I'm guessing
something to do with Showtime contract
Our Bovine Public - January 7, 2012
He’s not a heavyweight. The LHW division has to stay put.
Tim Burke - January 7, 2012
I figured as much.
but why were Shields, Hendo, Le, and Diaz allowed to leave? Is it because they had no connection with Showtime?
Ricardo Arguello - January 7, 2012
That was before SHO reupped their contract with SF
Seems like they put something in the extension that limits who the UFC can remove from the organization.
Chris Hall - January 7, 2012
Well, they came over before Strikeforce re-upped with Showtime. As part of the new deal, the HW division was moved to the UFC, and I guess all the SF guys that are under contract now will stay with SF and no one else will be moving over.
Tim Burke - January 7, 2012
ah, ok
Good to know. I didnt know the details of the new Showtime contract
Ricardo Arguello - January 7, 2012
I guess this means no Gilbert Melendez in the UFC for a while.
M.Sphinx - January 7, 2012
yup got to honor that contract
dandeman - January 7, 2012
It is unfortunate though. Guys like Mo, Rockhold, Melendez, etc.
will be stuck fighting lesser opponents. We were SO close to getting everyone in the UFC! Damn you Showtime!!!!!!!!!!!
Machiel Van - January 9, 2012
He sounds like a real charmer
unambig - January 7, 2012
Oh wow I had no idea about the hidden gem that is King Mo’s twitter
That man can lay down some hate.
Pyrgz Krum - January 7, 2012
That sucks
There isn’t that many people left in SF that he hasn’t fought and he’s already 30. Anybody know how long his new contract is for? It would suck if he can’t move up to the UFC before he turned 32-33.
av1o3 - January 7, 2012
Four fights.
Tim Burke - January 7, 2012
The Larkin fight is on his previous contract, yeah?
Hard time seeing four good fights for him given the Strikeforce situation. Feijao rematch for sure, then who? Mike Kyle maybe?
Pyrgz Krum - January 7, 2012
Yup, Larkin fight is the last fight on his old contract.
Tim Burke - January 7, 2012
There’s Mousasi, Feijao, Pezao, a few others. I doubt he’ll fight Kyle, they’re both AKA guys.
Tim Burke - January 7, 2012
Well, I guess that’s decent. Wouldn’t mind seeing a Mousasi rematch actually.
Stiil, it’s a darn shame that he’s trapped in Strikeforce. Would have enjoyed seeing him in the UFC LHW division.
Pyrgz Krum - January 7, 2012
Thats too bad.
Would really like to see him in the UFC 205 div. There seems to be a changing of the guard taking place there and I would have liked to see Lawal compete there.
If you look at it objectivity and put away any bias of racism aside, you can see he’s a good fighter but we don’t know how good yet. And in the Strikeforce LHW division, which will always be second tier, we may never know.
Same with Melendez.
NoHo - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Sucks for Mo
You know he wanted out and got stoned walled.
Zuffa has to make good on its obligations somehow. Too bad it costs guys like Mo and Gilbert.
TheFilt - January 7, 2012
Mo, Feijao, Mousasi, Rockhold, Kennedy, Souza, Woodley, Melendez, Masivdal, Noons…
Strikeforce is now the worst of all possibilities: a promotion that doesn’t provide a real alternative to the UFC but still keeps some of the best in the world from fighting in the UFC.
John Nash - January 7, 2012 via mobile
SF blows now man.
There is literally nothing to cheer about SF now.
vivero - January 7, 2012
There's still
The fighters and some of the fights but, yeah, there doesn’t seem much reason to keep it alive
John Nash - January 7, 2012 via mobile
There is just no freaking direction. They are even deprived of death.
vivero - January 7, 2012
Agree 100%,
Dana has promised for years that he wants the best to fight the best, and now he isn’t delivering on that. This SF, UFC situation is quickly breaking down into the politics that have held back boxing for the last couple of decades.
dpk875 - January 7, 2012
Should we ignore the fact that Dana/Zuffa bought Strikeforce for that very reason and have already brought over many of the top guys?
I am of the belief that they’d like to bring over the rest, but their strategy hit a few snags and the fighters you’ve listed are the casualties. I also believe that they will get brought over as soon as feasibly possible.
Schwizzles - January 8, 2012 via mobile
This signing really surprises me though because his contract is up after the Larkin fight. I would like to know why he was forced to re-sign with Strikeforce.
chrisbboy82 - January 7, 2012
He's gotta make that paper.
I’ve heard interviews with him on a variety of podcasts and he seems like a fairly articulate guy who speaks straight and seems like a genuine fan of the sport he’s in and has solid opinions. Why, to put it the way some dumbfucks around here like to put it, is there so much “hating” of Mo going on?
UncleMax - January 7, 2012
Because Mo comes off as arrogant to some. And people don’t like being told that they’re stupid.
Tim Burke - January 7, 2012
I don’t mind. I like to have my “stupid fun” here at BE :) Why you “hating” UncleMax?
Machiel Van - January 9, 2012
It’s pronounced “fading”.
Machiel Van - January 9, 2012
I wanna see more of this
ekc - January 7, 2012
why is that so many Americans fans seem to hate Mo but in Japan he was an instant star?
ekc - January 7, 2012
insert comment about asians loving black people without sterotyping
Blacklegend - January 7, 2012
It's true though
Especially for the heavier weight classes. They fucking love Bob Sapp no matter how terrible a fighter he is. I’m pretty sure he had his own show there and featured in a bunch of commercials.
Rampage was pretty popular. As was Randleman.
av1o3 - January 7, 2012
I don't like the term "freak show fight", but
Machiel Van - January 9, 2012
lots of people are assholes
Phildo - January 7, 2012
well if he cant tell its his stupid attitude problem that doesnt get him into the UFC
then he is the stupid muthaf**** i mean seriously ..
Dana, made it painfully obvious when they asked him about something King Mo related
and Dana did that fighter diss he likes to use ..
that “whats his name Mo Walal” * reporter corrects him* .. yea Mo Lawal ..
“what does he call himself?”
*reporter tells him *
“yea .. King mo or w/e those guys over there are sayin .. blah blah "
basically saying he is a nobody not worthy being on his radar ..
Ive seen dana do that “whoever that guy is” routine a few times lol
FLOJO - January 7, 2012
King Mo appeared much smarter and dignified when he disabled his twitter account
elmojo - January 7, 2012
Haha
Afrotikiman - January 7, 2012 via mobile
I think that applies to almost every single person on earth. There may well be one or two exceptions but I’ve yet to come across them.
forkboy - January 7, 2012
People can hate on his ego
but can’t deny that King Mo puts in work and knows a lot about the sport. He’s one of the most knowledgeable guys in MMA.
Frank Lee - January 7, 2012
I noticed last night that Tyron Woodly retweeted this,
Just wondering if he ran into the same thing with Dana that Mo did.
dpk875 - January 7, 2012
SF is the best place for Tyron ATM
He had trouble on the ground with Paul Daley. I don’t see UFC WW’s giving him an easy time at all. I think guys like Story or Pierce would put a hurtin on him
sitnam90 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Good
boring motherfucker
he just snoozed his way to a SD
Cunny - January 7, 2012
I want to see Rampage vs King mo
sucks.
Tats16 - January 7, 2012
they can't force him to sign a contract extension
the bosses probably told mo they would make it worth his while to stay with strikeforce. probably to keep the peace with showtime.
tha dude - January 8, 2012
Sure, but they can also refuse to sign him to the UFC. Should he go back to Japan and wonder when he’ll get his checks, and then if they’ll clear? Mo made the right decision here.
