In the UFC, a single month can change everything. On December 1st, this UFC 143 card looked nothing like it does now. UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre was forced off the card with a major knee injury, which caused a major shuffle. Now, Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit will meet for the interim welterweight belt on February 4th in Las Vegas, and Josh Koscheck will face Mike Pierce. In addition to that, Fabricio Werdum returns to the UFC to face Roy Nelson, and Renan Barao and Scott Jorgensen will face to see who gets the next shot at the UFC bantamweight title after Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber 3. I don’t know if he’ll destroy Jorgensen, but I do see Barao getting the W. Jorgensen is no slouch though, and I expect a good fight from the two. Moving forward, I think that at this point, Barao has a skillset that Cruz hasn’t faced before and could potentially be the one to dethrone him.

Werdum, despite his flopping in previous fights, actually has decent standup, and he showed it the most against Bigfoot Silva. I think that Nelson has more power though. With grappling, Werdum should have the edge here despite Nelson having the belly.

In all seriousness though, if this turns into a grappling match I think it is going to be scrambly as fuck because both guys are so active. They are both so smooth on the ground I would almost be a little disappointed if they didn’t roll for at least a little bit.

Diego Nunes vs. Manny Gamburyan. The first fight of the prelims of that show has bigger names and is more important in terms of division placement and potential future title matchups than the 5th fight on the main card of this one. It’s not a complaint, but a statement of truth.

This is going to be the first big card of 2012
142 isn’t going to sell well. Diaz vs Condit might be one of the most exciting fights in MMA history. Add in that it’s being built up with the primetime show(what’s the lowest buyrate a primetime show has ever had) on FX, which is a lot better than a primetime show on Spike.
Then, on top of that, all of the prelims are going to be aired on FX. That’s again, better than having just 2 on Spike….the more ‘free stuff’ people get, the more chances of them seeing a great fight, the more chances of them getting into it over the course of the broadcast and being drawn in to buying the PPV.
Plus I think Superbowl weekend is a good weekend to have a PPV…last year did well with 126. 750K buys with Anderson headlining, Griffin-Franklin in co-main, and Jones-Bader 3rd fight down.
None of those guys went on to be part of a big PPV…so I have to assume the weekend chosen had something to do with it.
