UFC 143: Georges St. Pierre Is Rooting For Nick Diaz Out Of 'Hate'

Photo

Injured UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre is making no bones about picking a fighter to root for to win the interim welterweight title at UFC 143 on Saturday. The champ wants Nick Diaz to beat Carlos Condit, but perhaps his mind is clouded by passion. Passionate disdain for Diaz that is. Here's GSP talking to UFC.com:

"I am very nervous that Carlos Condit will win on Saturday night, and that I won't be able to fight Nick Diaz this summer. I feel bad, it is weird that I want (Condit) to lose, but I have never wanted to fight anyone as much as I want to fight Diaz. I don't truly hate him as a person. I don't know that he is a bad guy, but I hate what he brings to the sport with the disrespect and the unprofessional things he says and does. It is sort of a professional hatred. He has been nothing but disrespectful and arrogant towards me.

"I respect Carlos Condit, but I want Diaz to win. It will be a weird feeling, sitting at the Mandalay Bay wanting Nick Diaz to win. I want this fight with Diaz so badly, as badly as I wanted the title shot when I got down on my knees. I have never asked (UFC President) Dana White for anything, but I did ask to fight Nick Diaz. I was (crushed) when I had to pull out of this weekend's fight hurt, but I am determined to get back to the Octagon as soon as possible to fightthis guy. He needs to hold up his part and beat Carlos Condit on Saturday to make this fight happen.

""The way I see it, I am not the champion anymore on Saturday night. I have not fought since April, against my will, but I understand the champion must fight. You have to put the belt on the line in order to call yourself champion, the best in the world. Right now I am not the best in the world, I am injured. The winner of this fight on Saturday will be more than just the new No.1 contender, but he won't be the new champion either. The winner of this fight will have to beat me to become the true world champion and I will have to beat the winner of this fight in order to call myself the best in the world again.."

GSP was originally set to fight Diaz at UFC 143 but had to pull out in early December for reconstructive surgery to repair a torn right ACL. He had to miss a scheduled title fight with Condit at UFC 137 due to a strained right MCL. He is expected to return to face the interim champion in the summer or fall of 2012.

I really hope Diaz has gotten into GSP's head.

Because then maybe GSP will actually fight with some emotion now.

I like GSP

but he sounds kind of whiny and lame. Maybe it’s lost in translation.

Maybe it’s lost in translation.

The dude’s favorite thing to talk about is dinosaurs…

Nothing wrong with that

Especially if it’s about T-rexs and velociraptors.

Seems more like a Parasaurolophus or Diplodocus kinda guy
He comes off as a much less boring dude in french.
He's out of competition for almost a year, people've been calling him irrelevant and asking whether he should be stripped of his title.

In addition, the onlookers get bored of their gladiators’ ‘safe’ style of fighting. My guess: somebody told him that while he isn’t fighting, he needed to at least market himself and have himself talked about. And they’re probably right.

Not going to happen

Gsp will bring too much emotion to the table against Diaz and will lose due to carelessness. Diaz will become the undisputed welterweight champ and all will be right with the world.

GSP better not release the dark side of his he talked about in the primetime episode,

he might finish a fight

Even if by some miracle of god that Diaz gets past Condit and GSP to become the champ

I can see any decent WW wrestler stripping the belt straight off him… Fitch, Ellenberger, Koscheck or even Hendricks come to mind.

When people say this it makes me scratch my head.

Hes going to beat GSP but lose to koscheck cause koscheck is a wrestler? what

in my mind

It’s people thinking he won’t be the same wrestler after coming back from the knee injury.

If he is able to beat the greatest MMA wrestler of all time

We would lose to Fitch, Ellenberger or Koscheck?

GTFO.

EVEN IF BY SOME MIRACLE!!!

This is MMA after all and anyone can be caught…. Did u not see the Serra fight?

I think GSP is in trouble with Nick or Carlos
HATEHATEHATE

Now click your heels three times, and go back to Lodi.

Lodi New Jersey?
I like watching Nick Diaz fight

but his lack of professionalism is annoying.

GSP was difficult to lid
Diaz is going down

By points or submission. GSP is a technical fighter. Is that why everyone is against him? You’d rather see a lesser talented guy at stand up but good on the ground just throwing crazy punches like what’s-his-face? Leonard Garcia? That’s entertaining? No. I’ll be just fine if GSP grinds Diaz by points or submission…or if he breaks his face the way he did to Koscheck.

I actually hope it’s a 5 round bloody war with a KO/TKO/Submission in the last 2 minutes of the fight! GSP!!!!!

It’s also funny when people say GSP is going to have trouble with either of these guys…..They are great fighters…but it’s been a long long time since GSP has had trouble with anyone.

I'm a big GSP fan but ain't no way he submits Diaz.

If he finishes it’s a TKO.

Like Diaz gets a freak “Cote style” injury and so it has to be ruled a TKO?

Cut stoppage seems more likely.

Mat burn stoppage

I don't think GSP finishes it anyway.

But if he does, a doctor stoppage is pretty much the only way I see it happening.

Yeah Diaz cuts easy so thats very possible.

I’d like to see Diaz quit on his stool, personally. That would be the ultimate lesson of humility for him.

The Diaz brothers are such tough mutherfukers that I doubt that ever happens
Yeah, ain't happening.

Nobody ever thought BJ Penn would quit on his stool either… and GSP made him. It wouldn’t surprise me if Diaz did. I see a lot of ground and pound with plenty of elbows thrown his way, and he’s not going to like it one single bit.

BJ’s corner wisely threw in the towel. If BJ had been able to decide, he would’ve unwisely continued. He barely knew where he was when they stopped that fight.

BJ ain't the Diaz brothers

I’ve seen what they look like after they lose. Penn, after the Fitch and Diaz fights, was despondent and defeated. Diaz on the other hand, wants the fight to keep going at the hospital.

Well Nate for all intents and purposes did quit in the MacDonald fight… Rory was having his way with a lifeless body by the end of that fight.

rec'd for using "intents and purposes"

and not “intensive purposes”

That one drives me crazy.

Funny, I’ve never seen anyone write “intensive purposes”…

If you had

you wouldn’t think it was funny.

lol people actually write/say "intensive purposes"?!?

I’ve never run across that but man it would be worth a good laugh.

he will never quit
I think, contrary to popuylar belief

Diaz is a technical fighter, too. He has holes in his defense, for sure, mut he’s a supreme mind gamer and his offense is consistently brilliant.

Technical is fine

but I want some emotion as well.

Which is why Carlos Condit is my favorite fighter.

Man, people turned on GSP QUICK

I love seeing this side of him. If Diaz gets past Condit, GSP is gonna run through him. I can’t wait.

One of my favorite anti-Diaz moments was when that kid was ragdolling Nate Diaz all over the place….3 slams in about 1min 30sec…..Corey McDonald was it?

Yeah, shows you how fickle fans can be.

I’m looking forward to GSP coming back and making everyone look foolish for even thinking of picking against him.

GSP and Nick Diaz, heated rivals!!!
I don’t truly hate him as a person. I don’t know that he is a bad guy, but I hate what he brings to the sport with the disrespect and the unprofessional things he says and does. It is sort of a professional hatred. He has been nothing but disrespectful and arrogant towards me.

“Joe, those guys genuinely hate each other.” – Goldberg

I think his preferred phrasing is:

“These men do NOT like each other”.

His hate is so . . . so . . . so full of hatred!

BTW, love the Sonnen quip.

That’s a rather nuanced view point on the differences between champion and number one. Not what you’d hear from some meat head jock. I think GSP lives up to his “intelligent athlete” persona.

Intelligent Athlete?

Dr. Rhadi Ferguson, yes.

GSP, not so much.

It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about wrestling, it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about judo. It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about football. All those sports require the understanding of distance, space, time and the implementation of velocity, not speed but velocity. All those are the same, can all be broken down as a battle over territory. Football is the battle back-and-forth over territory. Boxing battle over foot placement and territory. Wrestling, battle over territory which is the circle. It’s all the same. It’s the individuals who don’t understand the art of war by Sun Tzu. They get things mixed up because all t hey see is the end point — all they see is the kung fu or the karate or judo or wrestling. They don’t see the root of art itself. The root of the Art of War. There’s no difference. Absolutely zero difference.

This is very cool! Thanks for sharing that with me.
If this were anyone but gsp I'd say nick has already won

Diaz has already won the mental game going into this fight by making the other person Yale things way too personally. Most any other fighter would get hot headed and make mistakes in the cage. But this is GSP. When GSP becomes very emotionally invested and charged in a fight, he personifies what we all look for in a champion. Consider Hughes 2, Serra 2, and BJ 2. He transforms into an extremely fierce, super focused, incredibly skilled fighter who destroys people.

Huh?

Maybe I’m off base here, but if GSP got down on his knees to beg for a title hasn’t he already asked Dana White for something? Does it not count because getting on your knees is more like begging?

I guess this is kind of like when GSP says that his half-hour sessions of dry humping his opponents don’t make him a boring fighter, but rather a safe one. Because safe is exciting!

Here's an interesting video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eci_rVr9m6s&feature=related

A very good interview with Nick, and some great footage of him supplying himself as a brilliant training partner for Rousey.

I wonder if it would be better for mma

if Diaz won? If he beat Condit and GSP, that would be huge and possibly make him a big draw for ppvs. Maybe not, but with his personality and fighting style I could see it happening. Also, we’d get to see GSP’s quest for a title shot again, and setting up a big rematch in Diaz vs GSP 2.

If GSP wins though, and this time not in a boring decision, maybe that would be better since it would get some hype and excitement around him again instead of whats going on now.

Well, the UFC certainly want Diaz to win, that much is clear.

I hope they bring GSP in the ring after Diaz wins the title. Nick will tell him to his face that he is scared and faking injuries.

I really hope so too, let Diaz smell the fear on gsp, can’t wait to see that Canadian get his shit kicked in

GSP will not be impressed by Diaz’ performance.

DAMN THATS HATEFUL!!!!

GSP is scared

he’s gonna root for Condit like he’s never rooted for anybody ever

GSP is going to wreck Diaz.
Hes afraid

he even said he was afraid to run into diaz because he thinks he was going to fight there and then… ALL WEEK this is a scared man no matter how you look at it..

Cute..

GSP went to WWE-school and took “How to make a narrative in a fight 101”. Get ready for a post-fight hug.

it’s times like this i miss the MostDiabolicalHater…
