In news that directly impacts the UFC, Floyd Mayweather will be fighting Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas on May 5. The news came during Floyd's licensing hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission today, ending speculation about who Mayweather would fight after the idea of a bout with Manny Pacquiao was shot down yet again.
While Mayweather was calling out Pacquiao, Top Rank said Manny wouldn't be ready by May 5 due to a cut suffered in the Juan Manuel Marquez fight last November while Floyd is locked into the date due to the terms of his delayed jail sentence.
The UFC is holding their third effort on the Fox network that same night and I imagine the plan will be to play up the "our fights will be done before Floyd and Miguel enter the ring" angle as they did for the first Fox show, which was the same night as Marquez vs. Pacquiao.
I don't know if they'll find the same success this time around given the dip in ratings for the second Fox effort but it will be interesting to see if the idea of piggybacking on big boxing dates continues to pay off for the UFC. And, make no mistake, this was a planned move. Mayweather had May 5 locked up before the UFC announced the date and it is traditionally a major boxing weekend.
I do think we can count on some juicier quotes from Floyd on the UFC trying to steal some of his thunder than we got from Arum and Pacquiao last time around.

So long, fight of the century
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
What, you think Cotto will beat PBF?
ElliotMatheny - February 1, 2012
Not at all
It’s just another nail in the coffin of Mayweather/PacMan
every fight they each take is another nail
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
I guess.
Sad to think about, though. Just fight already.
ElliotMatheny - February 1, 2012
Going head to head with a Mayweather fight?
How come no one at Zuffa or Fox caught this before a date was announced??
jack knight starman - February 1, 2012 via mobile
They knew. It was their plan all along.
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
But Brent to what end?
The money fight is going to take viewers away from the Fox\Zuffa card and it is all about ratings?
I don’t see how this benefits either party
jack knight starman - February 1, 2012 via mobile
It may very well have helped with the first UFC on FOX show. This will end at 7pm PT/ 10pm ET just like the first one.
Machiel Van - February 1, 2012
haha boxings a joke
wouldnt be ready by may b/c of a cut?
mwahahahahahahahahahaha!
r.i.p. boxing.
gspmademegay - February 1, 2012
Well. that’s a stupid thing to say.
I mean, I agree that the cut thing is bullshit, as I’ve written about plenty already. but it’s hardly the death of boxing
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
could the refusal of top fighters
to fight eachother (cuts/steroid tests/ect.) and the lack of anyone whatsoever to make them fight (i.e. every other competetive sport) possibly be whats really stupid here?
gspmademegay - February 1, 2012
It’s a stupid situation…but one fight doesn’t hold the fate of boxing.
You know what the winner of Manny vs. Floyd in May probably would have done? …fought Miguel Cotto in November.
You know who I think would win Floyd vs. Manny? Floyd. So it’d have been Floyd vs. Cotto in November instead of May.
Manny vs. Floyd was never going to happen on May 5. If it happens this year, November is the month.
But here’s the thing. If the only fight someone is invested in watching is Floyd vs. Manny, why do they matter? Floyd vs. Cotto at 154 pounds is a completely legitimate fight, and is probably the best fight that could have happened on that date. I have no reason to think that people who “only care about Floyd vs. Manny” matter at all. What happens next? Would people have suddenly viewed Cotto as a more legitimate fight for Floyd?
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
legit points, all.
i guess i dont matter though, because im not interested in any fight besides #1 vs. #2. and im guessing im not alone.
i just dont see how anyone can take boxing very seriously anymore.
gspmademegay - February 1, 2012
Because one fight didn’t happen?
Pretty easily.
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
This fight falling through doesn’t “kill boxing,” because it wouldn’t have “saved boxing” if it did indeed occur. The result of this fight would be a lot of eyes watching (parts of) a boxing event, a lot of media attention for Pacman/Mayweather, and would perhaps elevate the winner’s stock considerably or set up an intriguing, huge rematch. After the fight, the sport of boxing would just continue as it always has. What did UFC 100 really do for the sport of MMA?
Machiel Van - February 1, 2012
Easy
Rios vs. Gamboa. Thats a fight you should care about.
traydawg - February 1, 2012 via Android app
That’s a fight everyone with a pulse should be excited about.
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
You know what fight I'm salivating over?
The potential, its still possible it won’t happen, but Soto/Matthysse would be sick!! I’m a Zorrita fan and that would be awesome of they get it on! There’s talks about it going on so I’m hoping it gets signed.
Cestus84 - February 1, 2012
I wanna see Marquez vs Rios
TheDreadedMarco - February 1, 2012
Bam Bam? dude…we can’t have nice things. You know this.
Krimson - February 1, 2012
Brent, Its funny you think Floyd would win. It seems me and a few other people who follow boxing as much as MMA all agree that Floyd would win as well. This was before Marquez was jobbed again by boxing.
Mayweather for all his faults can adapt in the ring and takeover fights. Manny is a perfect style for Floyd and Manny cannot adjust well mid fight. Plus I think the speed advantage may go to Floyd as well.
I am not even a Mayweather fan, but he is clearly the best p4p boxer.
t0dd - February 1, 2012
Dude, don't even bother.
Boxing is not what it used to be, that’s a fact. Is it dead or dying? By no means. As long as there are JM.Marquez/Diaz, DeMarco/Linares and H.Marquez/L.Concepcion fights going on, Boxing will do just fine.
Cestus84 - February 1, 2012
Yeah some guy having a cut is gonna ruin boxing.
You do realize boxing is a much bigger sport then mma right? I don’t see anyone saying that Anderson silvas ducking tactics and “injuries” are ruining and killing mma.
bert44 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
thats because its the exception,
not business as usual.
gspmademegay - February 1, 2012
Boxing’s problems stem from the fragmented infrastructure of its divisions/championships/sanctioning bodies/promoter politics. I don’t see Mayweather or Pacquiao’s names anywhere in that statement.
Machiel Van - February 1, 2012
This is a pretty good fight
I’m glad its this insteadof cotto vs pac 2, but it’s hard to see how cotto wins this one. Its more winnable than the pac fight but he needs to bring out the old cotto who would stop guys with body shots and stop tryjng to be a slick boxer.
bert44 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
You know when it would have been an even better fight? Years ago when Cotto wasnt the faded shell he is today. But we all know Mayweather doesnt fight guys in their prime. He only fights them on the way up, on their way out, or guys like Victor Ortiz who never deserved to be in there to begin with. Ill give credit to MAyweather, he has the greatest ability to take advantage of Boxing’s lack of an overseeing body then anyone ever has. Hes a master at advantageous matchmaking for minimum risk.
Hutchy - February 1, 2012
I notice you conviniently didnt mention Pacquaio
If your opinion is that Floyd fights “past their prime” guys what does it say about Pac that 4 out of his last 7 opponents were guys Floyd had already fought.
bigdmmafan - February 1, 2012
That Pac doesnt give a shit about boxing anymore. This isnt a well hidden theory. Pac feels he has proved what he needs to prove and is FAR more concerned with politics in the Phillipines. He basically fights whoever they put in front of him and doesnt really care. This isnt an either/or proposition, like Presidential politics. Its very possible that BOTH dont give a shit at this point. However, only one is putting himself out there as one of the greatest of all time, thus he gets more scrutiny, especially since that is an absurd statement to begin with. Tommy Hearns at Welter would have pieces of Floyd in his crap.
Hutchy - February 1, 2012
He can't care to much...
He only makes like a quarter of his obligations to his position, I remember reading or seeing something where ppl in his district said he can’t really perform the job 100% because he’s always traveling for non political obligations And engagements
RECE ROCK - February 1, 2012 via mobile
that's it. I'm done.
RolloTomasi - February 1, 2012
It’s also Cinco De Mayo, a very drinking and fighting oriented holiday. Zuffa wants the hispanic audience, and this is a good day to do it.
BKdroid - February 1, 2012
Yeah, Cinco de Mayo is a big boxing weekend. Floyd became a mega-star with his fight with Oscar on it..etc.
I think they have to go with Mir/Cain on Fox
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
that's full of win
Elstriko - February 1, 2012 via Android app
Zuffa will also keep the "bar" TVs.
an extremely minimal amount of bars that show UFC PPVs show Boxing PPVs in my area. Obviously the Fox broadcast isn’t a PPV, but it will likely get top billing at a lot of sports bars, always an underrated factor when discussing PPV ratings IMO.
The “dip” in ratings for the last Fox show IMO has more to do with lack of a top draw and lack of a title fight push. I think if they put decent names on here (I think the Griffin vs. Ortiz retirement match makes perfect sense) they should be just fine.
ChicagoMMAFan - February 1, 2012
This may work because the fights are on free TV but I hope the UFC is not underestimating the popularity of boxing in Latin america. If they think that Cain can draw numbers against a major boxing event in that part of the world or segement of US population they are wrong
nsiegel - February 1, 2012
Well, I think they feel that going the night of Pacquiao/Marquez went really well for them and they can really build on this
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
I hope so but I remember on the night of that fight my Latino friends all going out to watch boxing not UFC and sadly many of them have no interest in MMA yet and yes some of it is because of the machismo anti grappling sentiment
nsiegel - February 1, 2012
I think the “Cain as a big draw amongst Latinos” ship sailed a few months ago……..in 64 seconds, no less.
Hutchy - February 1, 2012
Wait....Because Cain lost 1 fight he is no longer a draw amongst Latinos?
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
No, because Latinos (as the above statement mentions) have zero tolerance for the ground/wrestling aspects of MMA. If there is going to be a big Latino star in MMA, hes going to have to be the Mexican Chuck Liddell. Unfortunately, Cain’s standup blows. Ive always said, the UFC should thank its stars that Cain had that Kongo fight before he got truly popular, because if the Latino audience had seen Cain reeling around the ring desperately trying to hump Kongo’s leg every single time his chin got even tapped……..well, that woulda been the end of that right there.
Hutchy - February 1, 2012
I completely disagree with this.
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
This sentence completely discredits your already invalid argument.
Sugel Mendoza - February 1, 2012
Actually, that's the only thing right about his entire statement.
discoandherpes - February 2, 2012
while it is true that the Hispanic audience is not used to the grappling aspect – especially the grinding, prolonged kind – the Mexican audience will always support one of their own if he’s good. Cain is more than good and has been doing some of the right things to promote the sport to the Hispanic demographic. he doesn’t need to be a fighter that primarily focuses on standup, it’s a matter of creating awareness and promoting the sport overall. they’ll embrace him and the sport eventually by making inroads, not just pulling them all in at once.
Victor Rodriguez - February 1, 2012
Nope, but Latino fighters are known for their chins, something Cain don't have!
Jack Slack - February 1, 2012
Junior dos Santos DID hit him pretty goddamn hard
Krimson - February 1, 2012
yeah, Junior tends to knock people out
not sure how that means Cain has a weak chin
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
that’s the argument made by people who act as if Cain got hit by Chelsea Handler and not a Brazilian fucking juggernaut with what is arguably the best boxing in the heavyweight division.
Victor Rodriguez - February 1, 2012
Chelsea Handler is a Mack Truck Wildebeest of a woman
I bet she packs quite a wallop
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
that sounds like something a true Hater would say.
a very Diabolical one, at that.
what i’m saying is, change your fucking name back because we love the classic you.
Victor Rodriguez - February 1, 2012
Thats the Most Diabolical of Haters?!
Dat Fucking Guy!
Krimson - February 1, 2012
I agree mdh
that and.Cain got hit in the temple area. pretty sure that’s not the chin or even close
Elstriko - February 1, 2012 via Android app
It's pretty close, anatomically speaking.
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
He ate clean shots from Kongo
and proceeded to take him down.
vivero - February 1, 2012
Didn't Kongo beat the holy fuck out of Cain's chin?
James Brady - February 1, 2012

Cut in November prevents a fight in May...
Did they need to wait for one of Manny’s concubines to give birth so they could harvest the flesh for a transplant or something?
menckenstein - February 1, 2012
Krimson - February 1, 2012
ooh! I'm so excited! boxing politics is BS. even kanye agrees with me.xD
Rampage01 - February 1, 2012
Yawn
Someone wake me when Pac and Mayweather just finally get this shit done and I don’t have to listen to more hyperbole about it.
HeadKickOfDoom - February 1, 2012
gotta give mma credit
they are making the big fights happen..boxing struggles with that
we get
reem vs jds
condit vs diaz
russow v einemo
gxc - February 1, 2012
We aren't getting all the fights that matter
Sure we get Sonnen/Silva II and Evans/Jones, but when is the UFC gonna set up JOE/Carwin? That’s the only fight that matters to me right now.
Baby Wads - February 1, 2012
shit i forgot carwin exsisted! now i crave that fight
gxc - February 1, 2012
we’re still missing Toney vs Shamrock. i hurt inside.
Victor Rodriguez - February 1, 2012
For as long the 3 giant fight promotions: Golden Boy, Gary Shaw, and Top Rank run boxing, we’ll never get the fights that matter in the future. I don’t even mean Mayweather vs Pacqiuao. I mean top notch fighters against top notch fighters. Not a top notch fighter against some dude and they fight in Vegas.
Krimson - February 1, 2012
So…Miguel Cotto isn’t a top notch fighter?
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
Not anymore.
Hutchy - February 1, 2012
Okay...let's get real then...
Floyd vs. Manny wasn’t going to happen on the date that Floyd had locked up (which is because of his jail thing).
At welterweight the rankings go:
1. Floyd (can’t fight yourself)
2. Manny (as stated, wasn’t going to happen)
3. Victor Ortiz (was scheduled against Berto, now isn’t because Berto is injured…but Floyd already beat him)
4. Berto (scheduled against Ortiz, plus has a ruptured bicep)
5. Jan Zaveck (no)
6. Kell Brook (no)
7. Mike Jones (not yet…maybe in 3 years)
8. Shane Mosley (been there)
-—So Floyd is going UP from 147 to 154 instead of fighting a smaller guy.
Rankings at 154:
1. Miguel Cotto (2 career losses, one avenged, the other to Pacquiao. riding 3 straight stoppage wins)
2. Canelo Alvarez (was a possibility but isn’t as established as Cotto and probably isn’t ready)
3. Austin Trout (no)
I mean, it’s cool to do a whole thing about this fight. But…I guess I don’t see it.
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
Jones probably should say 18 months - 2 years. not 3 years
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
“3. Victor Ortiz (was scheduled against Berto, now isn’t because Berto is injured…but Floyd already
beat him)”Machiel Van - February 1, 2012
“…was given the fight by the ref.”
Machiel Van - February 1, 2012
“…took the opportunity while the ref was trying to figure out what planet he was on”
Krimson - February 1, 2012
Brent, I’m not saying there was anyone better. I dont care anymore honestly, I havent actually watched a Mayweather fight in………..god, I dont even know. Oscar, maybe? This is more a statement on Floyd’s career as a whole, about (once he moved to 140 and above) his aversion to fighting anyone who is even remotely a threat to him.
Hutchy - February 1, 2012
Exactly
Other than pac and maybe Sergio martinez who is a mw, I don’t know who all these people think mayweather is ducking. If people don’t like the cotto fight I challenge them to find me someone other then PAC or martinez who is a mote worthy opponent.
bert44 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
Originally Cotto and Margarito
But now that this match has been made I think some of the people who questioned whether or not Mayweather deserves a fight with Pacquiao might not be opposed to the epicfight should PBF win this one. Know what I mean?
dajulzta - February 1, 2012
What I meant was consistently. Besides, I like cotto but all I’ve been hearing lately is that he’s on his last legs. IDK how true that is cause he looked amazing against Margarito.
Krimson - February 1, 2012
Thats because Margarito is a half blind zombie at this point. Cotto is done and has been for a while.
Hutchy - February 1, 2012
Based on what?
He lost to Margarito when Margarito was almost certainly loading his gloves and he lost to Pacquiao in a fight where he had some good rounds. That’s it. He’s still finishing guys, he’s still quick, he still has solid defense.
Is he “prime” at this point? Maybe not. But he’s certainly not “done”
Brent Brookhouse - February 1, 2012
Maybe it’s the age thing. I don’t think he’s done. I mean how old is Bernard Hopkins?
Krimson - February 1, 2012
Bernard is 47
And the manny that cotto got into the ring with that night was the best manny I think we have ever seen. That was mannys prime of primes, that and the diaz and hatton fights manny was just a beast. Same can be said or margarito, he never looked as good before or after the cotto fight.
bert44 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
I'm at the point where I dont care if Pacman and PPF fight
I guess I’m not alone. Too bad I really wanted to see Floyd expose him.
clarkkentpunch - February 1, 2012
Like almost everyone else, I want to see them fight until one of them loses.
Machiel Van - February 1, 2012
This is the best boxing match out there right now.
Everyone knows Floyd Manny will probably never happen. I think Cotto has a chance to pull this off. Floyd will be looking at jail time after this fight hopefully that fucks with his head and he gets beat then finally all the Floyd Manny talk will end.

Boxing is dead.
Thank you greedy promoters.
elmojo - February 1, 2012
no.
not dead. will never die.
just because it’s not as mainstream as it used to be doesn’t mean it’s dead.
the greedy promoters are poisoning the sport, but that doesn’t mean it’s dead either.
this meme needs to die.
and that little joke about fighting for a bunk bed? i gotta say it’s pretty funny, but he’s Floyd Fucking Mayweather. he’ll probably get a somewhat cozier pad that usual and not get messed with.
Victor Rodriguez - February 1, 2012
Floyd will be fine.
He kicked the big show’s ass.
nickrodamous - February 1, 2012
how can boxing be dead? when one of Floyd’s ppv’s earns and sells more then 2 MONTHS worth of UFC ppv’s? and his fights are $60 ppv!
how can boxing be dead when we see Floyd and or Manny on ESPN every night?
how can boxing be dead when Dana White is the most known person in the UFC?
how can boxing be dead when dana respects and would never compete with mayweather on ppv sales,.. he said it himself
smh
excellente - February 1, 2012
Boxing is still MUCH bigger then mma.
Mma is on the up and up quick but it will take them a long long time to reach the level the sport of boxing has.
bert44 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
Of course boxing is dead
Look at the gigantic PPV numbers for UFC 125, 132, 136, and 142! Those PPVs — all featuring title fights in the main event — combined are lower than the Mayweather/Ortiz buyrate of 1.2 mil.
SSreporters - February 1, 2012
Miguel Cotto is going to get the crap beaten out of him
Mayweather is too fast for him and will probably pound his face in.

Been wanting for this fight since Mosley/Cotto but Mayweather ducked cotto n picked and easy fight with hatton. Finally two defeats later Cotto get Mayweather. Hell yea. UFC on fox too. Fight mans night. Hope UFC has better headliners.

Mayweather is probably going to dominate, but it’s still a fight I want to see.
