Former Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz faces former WEC welterweight champ Carlos Condit at Saturday's UFC 143 for the UFC interim title. Bloody Elbow's Matthew Roth was at today's press scrum after the open work outs and caught Diaz talking to the press. Part 1 is above. Parts 2 is after the jump.
"You see me. What you see is what you get," Diaz said. "You get real martial arts, you get real fighting, you get a real warrior mentality. Some people aren't mature enough to handle it. This isn't soccer. i have no problem being sportsmanlike about this whole thing. I understand it's a sporting event. But to me this is a fight. I'm not going to let things change that to help this sport become what it is. I think this sport is what it is. I don't worry about looking good. I do what I've got to do to survive, to keep my teeth in my head, and my head on my shoulders. I apologize to whoever can't put that together and understand that."

Real martial arts is about respect. Get some.

.
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
You couldn't be more wrong.
Akemi Homura - February 1, 2012
I disagree.
Respect is certainly something preached by traditional martial arts, but what the Martial Arts are really about is allowing the practitioner a means towards inflicting maximum harm, and absorbing a minimum.
ElliotMatheny - February 1, 2012
so what you are saying is
it is about inflicting maximum harm awhile absorbing minimal harm. Respectfully.
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012

ElliotMatheny - February 1, 2012
Funny, I thought it was about kicking and punching and shit like that.
Horselover Fat - February 1, 2012
So painful but can’t stop watching/listening!
Afrotikiman - February 1, 2012 via mobile
So people don't complain about the shakeyness
I shoot these on my iPhone. It’s not exactly the best set up.
Matthew Roth - February 1, 2012
I think the shakiness adds to the mystique
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
I could care less about the shakiness.
Thanks for uploading these.
Unabomberman - February 1, 2012
Grab a chair to set your iPhone on.
Machiel Van - February 1, 2012
It's a scrum. You can't bring a chair. I just bully people because I'm louder.
Matthew Roth - February 1, 2012
I kid these are great. If I was going to complain I’d ask psychoblack what I should do to myself.
Machiel Van - February 1, 2012

Nick Diaz is gonna filibust your face
mollcutpurse - February 1, 2012
Love watching Nick fight
But man, listening to him answer questions can be tough. You can tell how uncomfortable he is with having to talk to the press. Good coverage so far tho Roth, keep them coming.
HeadKickOfDoom - February 1, 2012
He opened up for my question and then after that he's good with answering.
Matthew Roth - February 1, 2012
It really does seem like it’s hard for him to express himself verbally. I wonder if he ever writes.
Machiel Van - February 1, 2012
I’ve noticed when he’s more comfortable his speech is alot better. Like talking one on one with Karyn Bryant or a reporter he trust. Rousey said when he was teaching her she had no problem understanding him. In videos of him training, teaching, and interacting with friends there is little to no stutter. When he is around alot of people he ends up thinking a lot before giving answers b/c he doesn’t trust how media may spin it. And let’s be honest a lot of media are they hoping he will say something that can be easily misinterpreted.
Harley hooper - February 2, 2012
To be fair,
it isn’t like you have to twist his words…When Diaz starts rambling he says some weird, weird stuff.
jhf884 - February 2, 2012
Nick Diaz calls someone else immature.
gzl5000 - February 1, 2012
Fuck, dude's really does come across as an aspie. I'm convinced it might all well be ass burgers. what this guy's got.
Dude prepared a script for this, you can tell, and the moment the whole thing derails off it he gets it back to that place where he can deal with it, hence his insistence of the whole ‘crazy’ aspect of the talk, but the moment someone mentions triathlons, something the dude is nuts for, he starts talking on and on and even gets on the topic of heart rate calculations for triathlons, MMA, and that weird uneven kind of triathlon the dude was mentioning, and shit.
Unabomberman - February 1, 2012
Nick, is that you?
SteveevaD - February 1, 2012
I've said this same thing in discussions with friends
My mom is a therapist and helps young kids with asbergers. A lot of his mannerisms are the same.
Matthew Roth - February 1, 2012
I feel like we might be on to something
Andy Anderson - February 1, 2012
I’m sure people with Aspergers’ love hearing folks call it ass burgers. Classy.
memitim - February 1, 2012 via mobile
I think they’re more likely to just correct the spelling.
mollcutpurse - February 1, 2012
Asperger’s is a weird diagnosis. A lot of the time, the lesser degrees of Asperger’s just means you’re introverted or socially maladjusted. If you talk to a lot of introverts, they fixate on certain things as well, and often frame the world in different terms than most people.
crazybones - February 1, 2012
I know what Aspergers is. I just think if I was a parent of someone with the diagnosis and heard someone calling it ass burgers I would think significantly less of that person.
memitim - February 1, 2012 via mobile
I know you know. I was replying to Unabomberman.
crazybones - February 1, 2012
Yeah, sorry, figured that out. The lines on the mobile site get too close to delineate sometimes.
memitim - February 1, 2012 via mobile
Internet choice of words should not be your first line if determining a person's moral worth, you know.
But, then again, this is the internet, and people do whatever they want. If you had an issue with how I worded my joke, you could always do the mature thing and ass “Why would you joke about something like that?” Which would, in turn, earn you an equally adult response in return.
instead: No U.
Unabomberman - February 1, 2012
*and ask*
Unabomberman - February 1, 2012
The thing is I don’t care why you would say something like that, it’s irrelevant, this is the Internet. I was simply making the point that someone who has been diagnosed or someone who cares for someone who has AS would probably not care for people calling it ass burgers and would lose respect for someone who did. You do whatever you want. Knock yourself out.
memitim - February 1, 2012 via mobile
Asperger's is not a disease.
Most people get bothered at folk treating them with contempt, not at folk poking fun at the word used to refer to the syndrome.
Unabomberman - February 1, 2012
Well, next time you run into someone diagnosed with AS make sure you lighten their mood by calling it ass burgers. I’m sure they will get a hearty chuckle at the witty play on words.
memitim - February 1, 2012 via mobile
As a matter of fact quite a few do
dajulzta - February 1, 2012 via Android app
I'm ignorant to wht Asperger's is
And I honestly thought all of u were joking until mem got all offended
warren305 - February 2, 2012
Just googled it
Nick totally sounds good for that, and can think of a few people I know too
warren305 - February 2, 2012
Very true
Also people who have AS have a hard time seeing the big picture instead of focusing on the little details of stuff. Physical and communicative clumsiness are typical in aspies as well.
dajulzta - February 1, 2012 via mobile
The thing of why he may not be an aspie is because, well, he's a fighter. And many aspies as known to have some slight issues with coordination.
In the event that he is, we should be talking of Nick Diaz being in a class of his own when it comes to monumental achievements in combat sports.
Unabomberman - February 1, 2012
True, but if they're really good at something and want to do it they will do it pretty well
Have you noticed that Diax doesn’t have the sharpest tech or footwork but still manages to get the job done?
dajulzta - February 1, 2012 via Android app
It still should rank as monumental.
Most aspies are just not well motor-coordinated, or whatever you call it. It is just a trait that shows up over and over again in large groups. That is the sole reason of my not going nuts and saying “D00d is a dead ringer for someone with Asperger’s!” because it is just nuts for an aspie to accomplish what Nick Diaz has accomplished given that he would, most likely, had to be fighting with a real motor disability the whole time b/c of his particular choice of profession.
It just boggles the mind if he happens to be one, and there is just so much data to interpret for him at the very least being elegible for the test.
Unabomberman - February 2, 2012
That's right.
And it would be hard for many to admit how inspiring Nick Diaz’s story really is.
dajulzta - February 2, 2012 via Android app
Yep.
People are too much in love with their own opinions and are not likely to revise them, especially if it means that they made an error when carrying out personal judgment of some individual. There’s obviously something going on in Nick’s head beyond mere irresponsibility or immaturity, Asperger’s or not, but you’ll hear next to nobody else say it.
i used to think was an immature child, especially post botching his original title shot, but the more i read about the guy the more I became convinced that there was something just way too outside the norm about him.
Unabomberman - February 2, 2012
I've followed him since 04.
He has ADHD, or ADD (or some attention disorder). I’ve seen alot of interviews and he has communication issues. I’m not gonna speculate what may be wrong medically, but he really is a hard worker and he trains harder than anybody i can think of. He’s been doing the triathlons for years now. To me he is just different so to speak, the way all people differ from one another. He really is a nice guy, he just doesn’t sugar coat shit. His speech thing is just blown out of proportion, b/c it’s the easiest thing for interweberz to critique.
Harley hooper - February 2, 2012
It's about being comfortable
I’ve noticed when he’s more comfortable his speech is alot better. Like talking one on one with Karyn Bryant or a reporter he trust. This is a very insightful video about one of my favorite surfers with aspergers. It explains it quite well.

NickRingp4pGOAT - February 2, 2012
Awesome, dude thanks
There are similarities there. nice to see some sort of evidence, or comparison rather on this issue
Harley hooper - February 2, 2012
A lot can't stand to be touched either
and have sensory issues in general—I doubt you can get a black belt in BJJ w/ severe aspergers—but it’s a broad spectrum w/ lots of different ways it can manifest.
My armchair diagnosis (and I have several degrees in diagnosising complete strangers over the interwebs, so you know I’m qualified!) is some sort of social anxiety disorder, combined w/ dyslexia or ADHD.
jhf884 - February 2, 2012
I think he’s just referring to crazy cause GSP in various interviews has called him crazy or said he’s “acting crazy”. So when the reporter asked him if he’s heard what GSP has been saying he went back to the crazy thing.
The dude talks about what he likes and he’s honest. He’s like a guy who’s always tryna act hard whether the situation calls for it or not, because that’s just who he is. And he’s at least honest with all his answers as round about or irrelevant as they are, which makes him super entertaining in my book.
Robust23 - February 1, 2012
Nick Diaz might be the most uncalculated “bad guy” in the biz. It’s pretty amazing to think of the incredible turmoil that exists in his head that he is able to focus once he is fighting. It also makes sense that he was picked on and misunderstood as a child, and martial arts was the one thing that allowed him to thrive. Well, that and a ton of self medication via marijuana.
Jeremy Couturier - February 1, 2012
That’s crazy to me

Everyones talking shit, but did anyone even listen to what he said?
He has to keep it real, thats all. Thats how true Californians roll. Northern or Southern.
Not all these Hollywood hopefuls that move here from other nothing states in search of gold and coolness..
NICK DIAZ TO WIN NOW AND FOREVER
LosLurkos - February 1, 2012
Yeah! True Californians live in depressing, crystal meth ridden hellholes like El Monte, Bakersfield, Fresno and Stockton. They keep it real! Mean mug everybody, be disrespectful. No wonder I moved out of California.
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
you were just in the wrong place
silly e mo
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - February 1, 2012
Hey man
I cam from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Red carpets and $30 martinis are fun for a while but eventually you realize that you are nothing but a phony. Just chasing a dream and polluting the state with your goals and aspirations. Eventually I came to my senses and retired in the country on a 100 acre cattle ranch. Sure it gets lonely sometimes but out here, shit is real my friend. Or at least it was, until Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby brought that god forsaken Hollywood machine out here to try to film a little project called “City Slickers” . I told them sumbitches to get to steppin before I started throwin bear traps at them. Now that my friends, is keepin it real.
Earl Montclair - February 1, 2012
the cattle ranch is a great move
Northern California is a little more relaxed than south of the Grapevine
it’s all about location, I’m within 90 minutes of plains, deserts, forests, foothills, mountains, deltas etc.
You will always be MDH to me, don’t Snowden us
I can’t imagine getting up every morning with that attitude, angry all the time, looking for things to rail against.
Diaz is exactly like my god damned brother.
Probably explains my desire to both love and slap him every time I see him.
TorQus - February 1, 2012
Am I the only one who noticed
it seems like Diaz is on satellite delay when answering the press?
Cabbage: "Is there any disappointment in your mind that you’re not fighting Georges?
Diaz: “…”
Diaz: “…”
Cabbage: “…?”
Diaz: " Deep breath … no."
TorQus - February 1, 2012
No...we all noticed it.
Though he definitely opened up with an honestly and logical answer.
Matthew Roth - February 1, 2012
True enough
As polarizing as Diaz may be at times, these interviews show him as a real person and I can’t help but connect with him / feel for him at times.
TorQus - February 2, 2012
Triathlon
only time he felt comfortable was talking about Triathlons.
higgledy-piggledy - February 1, 2012
who is that reporter?
hey guys who is that reporter who always tries to start fights between fighters? He did it during pt one of the video and he did it in the press conference from Diaz’s last fight and Matt Mitrione had to step in and shut him up, I know it was him that got Diaz mad. I think it is reporters like him that stir garbage up. Anyone know who it is I would really appreciate knowing who he writes for and if they are respectable. He is a chunky nerdy looking guy. No glasses.
BgArchon - February 1, 2012
