UFC On Fuel: With Nick Diaz Out, Jake Ellenberger Leads Welterweight Contender Pack

Jake Ellenberger is the obvious choice to challenge interim UFC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit...if he can win this Wednesday night.

Jake Ellenberger is the obvious choice to challenge interim UFC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit...if he can win this Wednesday night.

With Nick Diaz on the shelf for an indeterminate amount of time after failing a post UFC 143 drug test and current UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre expected to be out until at least November, Jake Ellenberger has moved into pole position to be the next challenger to interim champion Carlos Condit's 170-pound title.

That is assuming, of course, that Ellenberger can get past Diego Sanchez in this Wednesday's UFC On Fuel main event, something he is favored heavily to do. He is clearly at the top of a mediocre pack of welterweights, a group marred by inconsistency, drawing power and a lack of notable wins.

Jake Ellenberger

Going into February, Ellenberger (26-5, 5-1 UFC) was the division's hottest challenger outside of Diaz. After dropping a tight split decision to Condit in his September 2009 debut, the 26-year-old finished four of his next five opponents by T/KO including Jake Shields in just 53 seconds last September. Even if Diaz hadn't been suspended, an argument could be made that another win would put him in title contention. Now it's undeniable he'd be the No. 1 contender.

While Condit hasn't been warm on a rematch with Ellenberger, he might not have a choice. It's unrealistic that the new champ is going to wait 10 months to fight Diaz when there's money and reputation to be made with a summer title defense. There's been some residual damage from the style in which he beat Diaz, a reason why the talk of a rematch this week made a lot of sense. Sitting on the sidelines for GSP doesn't make sense. Condit has to compete again before a title unification bout can happen.

Johny Hendricks

Following a surprising 13-second knockout of Jon Fitch in December, the Oklahoma State wrestling champion finds himself in another surprising position: title contention if Ellenberger loses. Hendricks (12-1, 7-1 UFC) has flown under some radars but since his August 2009 debut, he's only lost once in eight Octagon battles. The Fitch KO capped a big year and the Diaz situation may open up a much bigger door for him in 2012.

Jon Fitch

The poster boy for the eternal winning vs. entertainment argument, the Hendricks loss greatly hurts him if Ellenberger loses. We all know the deal: Fitch (23-4-1-1, 13-2-1 UFC) isn't a box office draw and constantly has had to defend himself for his fighting style. After his loss to GSP in his only title shot, Fitch won five in a row before going to a draw to B.J. Penn. With the defeat to Hendricks, the UFC has their out in not giving the AKA product another title opportunity, thus avoiding a potential champion that's perceived as bland. Fair? No, but it's reality.

Diego Sanchez

So what of Ellenberger's opponent this Wednesday? Would a win put Sanchez (23-4, 12-4 UFC) in Dana White's mix? It's an outside possibility as it would be his third win in a row after consecutive losses to Penn (lightweight fight) and John Hathaway. While some saw his unanimous decision win over Martin Kampmann as a gift, he also has name value and at 30 years old, White may be tempted to pull a surprise and give him a chance with an impressive win over Ellenberger.

Josh Koscheck

The outsider of the group, Koscheck (17-5, 15-5 UFC) does have consecutive wins over Matt Hughes and Mike Pierce, but the latter wasn't convincing and the fight public isn't clamoring for another Koscheck title opportunity after his eye was busted up by GSP in December 2010. Stranger things have happened, but it would take a lot for Koscheck to be considered a viable opponent for Condit this summer.

When it comes to getting a title shot, Ellenberger simply needs to follow the mantra of the late Al Davis: just win, baby.

What about Rory?

I would to see a Condit vs Macdonald rematch.

rory mac's fighting some scrub at 145

no idea why really, the kids super talented and could beat anyone on this list

agreed. The only one I see giving him a challenge is Ellenberger but I’ll still see rory beating him.

You are thinking of Michael MacDonald.

You are thinking of featherweight.

I got the event number confused with the weight class…

the macdonald – torres fight should be great though

I thought he was a scrub also

but Che Mills looks like a decent fighter. He’s not proven by any means, but he beat a 7-0 M1 fighter, is the only one to beat Jake Hecht in his last 12 fights (who recently finished Attonito in his UFC debut), and though it doesn’t mean too much, he finished Zaromskis and Chris Cope.

He’s a decent fighter. MacDonald has to bring his A-game.

It's a total mismatch though

Rory Mac should be fighting better fighters than Che Mills. Give him Koscheck.

if and when he beats mills that would be a great matchup
It's not a mismatch

Rory’s the clear favorite, but Mills is no pushover and is a great test. Mills might not be a future champion, but I think he’ll be a solid top 15 welter.

*love

I hope Dana doesnt let Condit wait it out like he wants to...

What was the point of winning an interim belt if he is just going to wait the whole year for GSP?

yeah that waiting thing needs to end. the evan's example should be a lesson to all.
he agreed to an immediate rematch with diaz

In what way does that translating into waiting?

Hendricks before Ellenberger

As a dominant win over Fitch is more impressive than one over Shields, IMO. Also, he hasn’t fought Condit yet.

If Ellenberger beats Sanchez, him demolishing Shields and then beating Sanchez is better than Hendricks beating Fitch coming off a long injury layoff.

I dusagree. They have fought roughly even level of competition, and I think wins over Shields and Fitch are about equal. Ellenberger is on a better winning streak, and I think the fact that he’s already fought Condit is a great case for making the rematch. He took the first one on short notice which makes the rematch a bit more interesting

Agreed. But if Sanchez someone manages to win a decision over Ellenberger, then Hendricks over Sanchez, IMO.

Yeah I guess so. He’ll really be the only option unless Sanchez wins very impressively with a finish or something. If Kampmann or Alves win impressively maybe they’ll have a chance but I doubt it, I think the UFC would go with Hendricks

Kampmann, maybe…. but Alves, no way. He had his shot at the title already, and let the UFC down on a few occasions already regarding his weight problems… I don’t think they give him another title shot anytime soon.

Wow. You and I had a difference of opinion and discussed it like adults. I didn’t believe it was possible the way the site’s been lately

I must be in the minority

But I generally would prefer to see a matchup that hasn’t happened over a rematch.

I generally agree with you, but when the first fight is awesome and especially if the result was close/contested/last minute miracle pulled out of nowhere, I want to see that fight again. Case in point. Condit/Ellenberger, Condit/MacDonald (eventually) and Anderson Silva/Chael Sonnen. Those are all rematches well worth seeing. And yes, Diaz/Condit also at some point.

I like Hendricks as well in the comparison. He also beat Pierce in a close fight. I guess Hendricks could fight Ellenberger for a #1 contender spot. Id pick Johny, in a similar fashion to how Story dominated Ellenberger in a pre Ufc fight.

kampmann?
Alves too

I think there is a case for the winner of Alves vs Kampmann to get a shot at Condit.

That’s what I was thinking – Kos and Fitch over Kampmann? Even Alves? And somewhere at the bottom of that mix is Rick Story.

Also, Sanchez is a terrible choice – he lost that fight to Kampmann.

He always manages to screw up a chance at contention

By being so close and then derailing himself with a loss.

I will be vehemently rooting against Jake Ellenberger's success for the rest of his career.
Wait, I'm still confusing Ellenberger and Hendricks.

Damn the WW division and it’s numerous wrestle-boxers.

Why root against Hendricks? Wait, are you one of the few Fitch fans?

you can't root against epic beard!
He's kinda like my favorite fighter.
Have you been talking to your therapist about that?

Are you a hardcore Sean Pierson or Jake Shields fan?

I was confused. Although I am a Shields fan as well.
What what?

A Shields and Fitch fan? You sir, are a rare species.

Rory will be "in the mix" if he takes out Mills...

…which he should. Mills is no pushover, but Rory is a beast. He’d be an exciting match up with any of those guys.

meh

Compared to Ellenberger and Hendricks, his current list of wins just doesn’t stack up at all.

So maybe he's in the pre-mix mix???

As in he’d have to earn a match up with one of the big boys then with a win be in the mix. I did kind of jump the gun there. I admit I get sucked into the Rory hype.

lol at pre-mix mix

but ya lets wait until he gets a matchup with one of the bigger names in the division

Ellenberger v. Condit II please

Diego Sanchez if you fuck this up for me……..

then you will angrily type obscenities on your keyboard?

Nope this Earl, he’ll post rage gifs

BJ Penn

Just saying…

pssssh

Matt Brown is closer to a title shot via winning his last fight.

Really...

using UFC logic (bigger name = ppv buys) I can see Penn being closer to a title shot…if you think I’m wrong remember Machida got a title shot…that aside Condit and Penn were set to scrap anyway before Diaz’s last fuck up and a shot at the interim I think would motivate Penn.

penn isnt a draw anymore though
please...

he’s a bigger draw than Koscheck

kos hasnt headlined a card since gsp.

penn did 280k with diaz.

Yep

It’s the only non-Diaz money fight.

And there is some logic, too. Diaz beat Penn. Diaz is no longer viable. Condit sorta beat Diaz…. but a rematch was in order. Penn had some moments vs. Diaz…. etc.

But bottom line.. Penn = EYES and $$$

I see a bunch of guys coming off wins...

…and Jon Fitch.

How is what’s happening to him not fair, again?

Completely agree

Fitch’s argument has alway been his record. So now, he’s 0-1-1 this past year and has last been seen knocked senseless by Hendricks. He’s not in the title picture anymore.

love how people forget his 13 other ufc wins

He’s two legitimate wins away from a title shot at most if Dana actually stuck by his mantra of pitting the best against the best.

he is on a 2 fight losing streak in Dana's eyes (he scored it 29-28 penn)

he is also on medical suspension for the KO and by the time he is back with any momentum GSP will be back

no chance for ol’ fitchy

so machida got a title shot after losing two and beating a 47 year old couture

Fitch was unbeaten aside from GSP who best everyone he fought ever(including rematches in that statement). He then drew with Penn who was still a top ten welterweight at the time and lost to now top ten welterweight johnny hendricks after a year out of the cage. The judges scored it a draw and that’s why I said if he sticks by his mantra though he never does so it doesn’t matter. Ol’ Fitchy shouldn’t be more then two legitimate wins away from a title shot. The problem is he won’t get it if Dana gets his way.

Nobody is forgetting them

You know who has a lot of UFC wins too? Matt Hughes. That doesn’t mean you can get knocked out in your last fight and be in the title mix.

i agree with you but matt is 4-4 in since he last lost to gsp

Fitch is 5-1-1 and he was also ranked number two or three by pretty much everyone. I am not saying he should be in the mix now, but rather if he wins his next two fights against top ten competition then he should definitely be in the mix

Definitely

I’m not saying Fitch will never fight for the title again. In your scenario, btw, he’ll have every right to do it. But we’re talking about the next contender here and like you said, Fitch needs two wins agains top 10 competition to get a shot again. This thread is about the title picture in the short term.

understandable and i agree short term hes currently not near the title (barring injuries to everyone)

but within the year i can see him getting a title shot near 2013 no problem

Maybe late 13

But gsp only fights twice a year and only once this year. Fitch isn’t especially active either. I don’t see him going on a tear of quality opponents to challenge again within the next 18 months

two guys in a year? shouldnt be to difficult for him
sounds like

Fitch vs Koscheck is starting to make sense for a potential shot at the title lol. Too bad they won’t throw down.

I maybe the only person here that wants it but I’d really love to see a rematch between Fitch and Hendricks to see if it really was just a Serra like fluke punch or if he really can be a top contender or if it was just a apparition and Fitch is still the clear #2 in the division.

i would still pick fitch in the rematch

I would love to see Jake Ellenberger taking out the rest of the scrap pack (kind of like the Kazushi Sakuraba for Cesar Gracie BJJ) by (T)KO. He had a great start with Shields and I somehow like his chances against both Diaz brothers.

Well, I don’t think he’ll have the chance with Nick’s suspension and Rory Mac German suplexing Nate back to lightweight.

I know, I know

And he’ll propably never face Melendez either. It’s just this recurring dream I’ve been having since the Jake vs. Jake fight

I just remembered Ellenberger als holds a TKO win over Gil Gastillo, another Cesar Gracie brown belt.

Condit vs Ellenberger/Sanchez winner for next interim title.

Fitch vs Rick Story

Koscheck vs Shields/Akiyama winner

Hendricks vs Kampmann/Alves Winner (as a setup for title contender after GSP vs Condit/Ellenberger combines belts)

Kampmann/Alves loser vs Shields/Akiyama loser

Mediocre pack?

Really?

Screw Rankings

If you want eyes, money, and drama

Make it Condit/Penn in Hawaii in Aloha Stadium.
