Georges St. Pierre has not fought since his UFC 129 bout with Jake Shields due to a knee injury while training for a title defense. That defense was originally scheduled to be against Nick Diaz, but Diaz skipped press obligations and the UFC punished him by giving the title shot to Carlos Condit. Then GSP got injured and the Condit fight was postponed while Diaz ran through B.J. Penn so impressively that Dana White and the UFC brass decided to move Diaz back into the title shot.
GSP would then suffer a major injury to his ACL, shelving him until mid to late 2012. So when the UFC decided to put Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz against the cage from each other for the interim welterweight title, with the winner to face GSP upon his return, it's no surprise that Georges was cageside.
The UFC released video of Georges at the fight, and that can be seen here:
I'd be interested in seeing these videos continue for future title contender bouts.

C'mon Georges. Show some emotion.
At about 1:33, he leans back and says “Ah, man!” This was about the most interesting part because it really felt genuine.
pud333 - February 11, 2012
He seemed tense. Clearly was invested in the outcome.
UncleMax - February 11, 2012
his Engish is bad...
and is getting worse, leading up to 143, it felt like he was having trouble getting his ideas across, i think it only adds to his nervousness. he would be better off speaking in French and getting a translator.
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
No.
I would much rather listen to his half decent English than listen to a translator.
halitosis - February 11, 2012
i dunno...
listening to him on media day before 143, it looked like he was having a tough time explaining to ppl about his ideas, feelings etc. especially when he started talking about inner demons, street fights, a lot gets lost in translation, and gives room to ppl to call him names.
with a good translator, he can be more efficient, i think a lot of ppl who find him bland and boring are english speakers, i doubt he is like that around his network of french speakers.
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
I'm always amazed
By how terrible the translators they find are. I’ll take broken English over a heavyset lady that has no idea what MMA is or why she’s in a cage.
WheelieMonkey - February 11, 2012
i agree.
but there is no shortage of good french translators, do they really need MMA knowledge ? leave that to GSP, just be efficient in translating his words.
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
He's not, he's much less boring in french.
Not that he’s suddenly Chael Sonnen or anything, but he’s much more comfortable and it shows.
Sweet Scientist - February 11, 2012
yes but i was very surprised when i first heard the Montreal French
I could consider it sounds much harder than the normal French sounds really terrible for a French translator i think :D
What spoiled the party here is, that he knew he was on cam. It would have been more interesting if he doesnt
szanpan - February 11, 2012
It's definitely a bit different than french as it is spoken in France.
But I’ve been in Montréal a month ago and aside from a few different expressions, it isn’t really that hard to understand.
Sweet Scientist - February 11, 2012
You speak French?
I’ve heard some Frenchie’s say that his French is terrible, but I wouldn’t know the difference.
People say the same thing about Siver’s(who is actually Russian) German.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
Yup, I'm french.
He’s from Québec so his french definitely sounds different than mine. I wouldn’t call it bad though. There’s quite a few different expressions and the accent is different, that can make it difficult to understand to French people. But that’s just the way they speak french in Québec. Not bad french, just a different way to speak it.
Sweet Scientist - February 11, 2012
Yes at a Q and A i have heard him because an Asian girl asked him
with her quite good real French and for some minutes i got really shocked when i heard his :D many words they say totally differently than French :D so to me it sounded terrible but i m sure one can get used to it :D its sooo much harder than the French French as for me
If Siver is a Russian then i m sure his German is awful LOL i can speak both languages.
szanpan - February 11, 2012
Cool
Thanks guys.
Its seems like Mexican Spanish vs Latin American or Catalonic Spanish
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
not that much difference though but all imo of course
between Mexican , Latinamerican and Catalunian Spanish apart from the fact that its each Latinamerican country has some of its own words and expressions :)
Now i have started to wonder how Siver speaks that German. One funny thing. Once i heard Schwarzenegger speaking German.. it was weird because he speaks English with still a hard accent but he eventually got to the point to speak also German with a kinda accent :)
szanpan - February 11, 2012
I don't speak spanish so I can't tell for sure but that sounds about right.
It’s also a bit like British English and American English.
Sweet Scientist - February 11, 2012
The gap might be a bit larger between French and Québecois
but that would be an apt comparison.
Sweet Scientist - February 11, 2012
exactly its larger in my opinion too
..
szanpan - February 11, 2012
It's not that bad, takes a bit to get used to the accent and has a few different expressions that's all.
Sweet Scientist - February 11, 2012
Although if French isn't your first language it might be a bit tougher.
Sweet Scientist - February 11, 2012
yup to me its the accent most of all
although i dont know the local French dialects in France mostly hear the common French as it is :)
And yes UK English especially the dialects (and the cockney) are very far from the US English indeed :D
szanpan - February 11, 2012
Seems like it
Although there are some UK accents that are damn near unintelligible to us Yanks.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
worked at IKEA for awhile had a guy come in from somewhere in england couldn’t understand a thing in english. swore at me in french and I was like hey I speak french…. understood him perfectly in french… it was bizarre
Bobillarious - February 11, 2012 via Android app
That is awesome
Englishmen…
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
And most french canadians speak much better english than the vast majority of french people anyway, so finding a translator shouldn’t be that hard.
Sweet Scientist - February 11, 2012
Yeah
Any French Canadian living in America would have no probably translating it and being understood.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
but i also heard that many in Québec refuse to speak in English
like Dutch kinda refusing to speak German..
szanpan - February 11, 2012
Yep
That’s why I said a a FC living in America.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
Ahhh ok now i got it LOL

Chuck doesn’t sound good. I’m glad he’s not fighting anymore.

I thought so too
He’d be much better off if he just never even took the Franklin fight.
halitosis - February 11, 2012
damn did he look good before that punch though.
no homo
TheCode - February 12, 2012
it was competitive, but that punch was like a train colliding against his head.
Carlos Estrada-Ibars Martínez - February 12, 2012
i thought GSP and chucks were not friends ?
you know after UFC 94……
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
Perhaps it's just my senility
what was that?
Cory Braiterman - February 11, 2012
apparently...
it was chucks who snitched on GSP about greasing to the commish.

and partying to hard
I’ve talked to some other fighters that have been around Chuck and they said Chuck parties haaaaard.
attgnp - February 11, 2012
what I took from this is that
Diaz wasn’t in GSP’s head as many said. At least not intimidating him, it seemed to me that GSP really wanted to whoop Diaz’s ass. This makes me wish the fight was happening even more cause GSP wrecks people when he’s pissed at them. Think BJ Penn and Matt Sera.
attgnp - February 11, 2012
the only problem
is that Penn and Serra were undersized for WW, and GSP is a monster
Though I agree on the front that an angry GSP wrecks people
Ricardo Arguello - February 11, 2012
size doesn't matter to GSP..
he wrecks bigger, stronger guys too, granted he is 100%
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
GSP is almost always the bigger stronger fighter.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
hardy, alves, fitch, and sheilds. nuff said.
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
LOOK HOW MUCH BIGGER DAN HARDY IS....oh wait
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
pic1- that angle is misleading, i remember that face off, hardy was just as big as st peirre
pic2- alves though shorter, was a juggernaut back then, listen to rogan as he is pacing before the intro, he was more physically imposing.
pic3- GSP is 5’11, fitch is atleast 6 feet tall.
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
Fitch is 6'0
but GSP is obviously stronger
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
Thats debatable
Fitch has to be pretty damn strong to Fitch people.
attgnp - February 11, 2012
Couldn't Fitch GSP
cuz GSP was stronger.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
or because
he way technically superior in every way
attgnp - February 11, 2012
Or
both
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
LOL fair enough
attgnp - February 11, 2012

attgnp - February 11, 2012
poor Fitch...
he’s been faded
szanpan - February 11, 2012
I don't think even one of those guys
are as strong as Georges.
Alves, maybe. But I doubt it.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
I feel like his technical/mental superiority is what makes the ultimate difference. Hughes is known as a freak of nature for his strength and GSP had no problem finding away to deal with that.
attgnp - February 11, 2012
forgot KOS...
who is contemplating move to MW now, GSP beats on smaller guys is a weak excuse to hate on him, not saying that you are.
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
I'm not hating
but the fact is GSP is almost ALWAYS the bigger/stronger fighter.
But then so is Nick Diaz.
It’s smart to fight as light as you can.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
oh i know...
its just that, lots of ppl think he made a career by beating up LW’s, you know coz of serra and penn.
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
I know better.
I’ve been watching GSPah since he was a pure Karate fighter.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
Nick is usually taller
But I think the majority of UFC LW’s have a big strength advantage over him.
The man is a technical prodigy. He just knows exactly what to do in every situation and unlike BJ Penn, he can actually do it after the first round.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
WW I think you mean
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
Nope
I think guys like Gleison, Maynard, Guillard etc. are physically much stronger than Nick.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
I disagree
Nick towers over those guys
Leverage=strength
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
Not really
I pick up guys with his build up over my head.
Leverage applied in the right way = strength.
Basically body type will have its mechanical advantage in one way or another.
That’s all technique.
In terms of actually physical strength, those guys I listed are definitely much stronger than Nick.
He says himself that he isn’t very strong and that a lot of high level MMA is “Which strongman fights the best?”
He says that Georges is the strongest strongman, but that Georges has the best technique, too.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
leverage=strength
Not always. I am short and compact and honestly love training with guys with Nicks build, I easily overpower them. 99% of the time I train with taller guys I have the strength advantage unless they have about 50 pounds on me.
attgnp - February 11, 2012
That's been my experience, too.
Shorter, faster guys murder me.
I have to get my hips super low, so I have to react way faster. Taking a 5’4" 150lb dude’s arm is a biacth, too.
Leverage is huge if its applied right though. In the clinch though, I was surprised how much stronger I was than shorter people, once I learned how to do it correctly.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
I always do well against shorter guys
reach is nice to have.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
You know what you're doing
For every Jon Jones there are 100 Stephen Struves. :)
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
I really don't
I fight like a spazz
It’s fun. :)
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
Yes it is
Its so raw and honest. Just you vs them. No bullshit. No politics.
But I don’t have the balls to go out under the lights and fight someone in front of a couple hundred people.
Much respect.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
Bump it
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
Striking almost always favor the taller/longer fighter
I have a monkey’s build.
Average legs, long torso and very long arms.
Despite sucking at Muay Thai, I can hang with much better guys who are about 5’5" just because my jab is like their front kick.
I like to use it as a meter stick for right hand, too.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
What is your wingspan?
dancingChicken - February 11, 2012
Don't know for sure
But I have a longer reach than most guys I train with that are 6’ or little more.
Probably around 74", at 5’ 9".
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
I'm 6'1" 185 and I have a 76.5 inch reach
so yeah, you have monkey arms.
Good for you.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
Racist!
Just measured. A little over 73".
You have some monkey ass arms yourself. :P
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
That's my point
I’ve got some height on you and your reach is almost the same.
Most guys your height have like 68/70" reach.
It’s a big advantage.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
I 've basically quit training these days
I about to start teaching a cardio kickboxing class and I’m just getting too lazy to drive across town.
I know I’ll regret. Guys I used to own already kick my ass when I show up now.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
You have 4" of height
and 3" of reach on me.
That’s means you probably have some surplus simian in you, too.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
It's cuz
I smoke weed.
It’s a PED.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
Makes sense
I once heard weed causes schizophrenia, so I imagine increasing your reach is just another ugly side effect they don’t talk about.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012

Ah
You’re making a comparison.
Of all the crazy shit I say, the length of my reach, is what you call into question? :)

it’s a meme

TheFilt - February 13, 2012
FREAK!
KILL IT!!!
KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RolloTomasi - February 13, 2012
Very true….I always use striking to set up the clinch/td on taller guys. Once I get ahold of a taller guy, even in the clinch I am fine. Part of that is due to my wrestling style, I love throws/body locks etc.
attgnp - February 11, 2012
Forgive my terrible typing
To give you an example, my wife is 4’11" 120lbs.
I honestly have a harder time lifting her than I do tall lanky 180ish lbs guys.
Her center of gravity is so damn low that I can’t apply my strength without really getting low myself.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
Damn
Weak ass mo fo ;P
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
I can't deny it :)
From my knees I can pick her up really easy, but standing is a bitch sometimes. :P
Part of it is I consciously(and unconsciously sometimes) use much less strength when I roll with her.
Have you noticed that you feel stronger on the mat from a kneeling position, too?
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
You know what else helps you lift heavy stuff?
Weed.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
That could be it, too
I do enjoy a good took every now and again.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
Really? I always thought you were as straight edge as Chris Groves
Chris Hall - February 12, 2012
true
but after Condit beat Diaz it makes me think GSP would have put a beating on him. Not trying to rip Condit, but I feel GSP is on a different level.
attgnp - February 11, 2012
I remember after the first round
Thinking that round alone cleared all doubts of GSP being able to beat Diaz.
Ultimately, before this fight I thought Condit was the harder matchup for him anyway, if only for one punch KO power.
halitosis - February 11, 2012
to add
I honestly think the reason an angry GSP wrecks people is because he admittedly was picked on growing up and I think he has that nerdy revenge mentality. Its kind of like okay now its my turn to pick on you, only I’m going to uses my fist, shins, elbows, etc.
attgnp - February 11, 2012
interesting......
words were exchanged between GSP/diaz, after the fight diaz came to cage and said something to GSP, and he replied “hope you win”. man the audio of what diaz said would have been nice.
carmine99 - February 11, 2012
maybe GSP just knows how to beat Diaz
I mean it’s no brainer, if BJ Penn could take Diaz down. Diaz also doesn’t have good strike defence, he likes to smother people and relies on his chin, so GSP can jab freely with his stiff jab which he had been honing for years and if Diaz comes forward in his plodding flatfooted way GSP can take him down and lay on him in side control untill stood up, then the same thing for the rest of 5 rounds and then interviews like "OH, Diaz is an amazing fighter, very tough hard to finish, I tried but you know, maybe next time and go colelct his paycheck
Derrida - February 11, 2012
BJ Penn took down Jon Fitch
Matt Hughes
just about everybody except GSP and Edgar.
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
that's true
I forgot that
Derrida - February 11, 2012
He even took Edgar down.
RagingNoodles - February 11, 2012
Did he?
I can’t remember.
As a BJ Penn fan I haven’t watched those fucking fights since the PPV
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
Yep
With ease.
If you go back on watch the first fight especially, you can see that BJ was miles and miles ahead in the grappling dept.. He just didn’t do it.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
I thought he won the first fight
but the second……..sigh
RolloTomasi - February 11, 2012
I don't recall the second fight well anymore
All I picture is a lonely Hawaiian standing still in the center of an octagon.
TheFilt - February 11, 2012
Went back and checked the second fight. Just fast forwarded it to see where I remembered Penn taking him down.
In the beginning of the fourth round, Penn got double underhooks and tripped Edgar to the mat. He started working from top position, trying to secure mount on Edgar. They were on the ground for a brief portion, Edgar on his back, then Edgar scrambled his way back up to his feet.
RagingNoodles - February 11, 2012
They should have done one of these for Lesnar
While he was watching Mir vs. Nog. It would have been lulzy.
