UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta isn't generally a guy that breaks a lot of news. But during a late-night twitter Q&A with fans last week, he was a goldmine of information. One of the biggest pieces of information he dropped was when he was asked by a fan who was next for former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir. He answered with just one word:
Cain.
That, of course, is former champ Cain Velasquez, who dropped his title to Junior dos Santos at UFC on Fox 1 back in November. Fertitta didn't mention a timeframe for the bout, but the yearly Memorial Day event (UFC 146 on May 26th) and Independence Day event (UFC 148 on July 7th) seem like solid fits. There will be a Fan Expo at the July event, so it is likely to have a stacked card.
Mir is coming off his second victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140, which was one of the best submissions of 2011. He has now won three bouts in a row, and has quietly crept back into contention for a title shot. Fabricio Werdum has been angling for a fight with Mir on twitter lately, but it looks like he will have to wait in line. The bout could possibly serve as a number one contenders matchup.

That could be a good fight
Cain should be favored, but Frank could give him problems from the bottom. I’m stunned they’re not going to make Mir-Werdum though.
Dave Strummer - February 13, 2012
Cain will wreck Mir.
Fertitta just hates Mir, doesn’t he? :D
SheepleBuster - February 13, 2012
i much prefer this fight to Mir- Werdum only because i want to see Mir get his face punched in. (that is, provided Cain is healthy)
phantom5691 - February 13, 2012
Frank doesn't do well against strong wrestlers.
He leaves too many openings, going for sweeps and subs. For some reason, he is awesome at submitting other BJJ players, though.
I’ve seen Frank get destroyed from half guard too many times to take him here. Freeman, Marcio Cruz, *Vera, Lesnar, and Carwin all smashed him.
*Yes, I realize this was right after the motorcycle accident.
*Yes, I realize that he still wasn’t in top form at this point.
ElliotMatheny - February 13, 2012
doesnt mir just have the coolest face?

this is a great fight.
However I echo Monte fistos sentiments of shock that they did not make Werdum vs. Mir. I think I prefer that fight to be honest.

winner of kongo vs hunt
Just get him a good win to get back on track. Although I really wanna see Mir fight Werdum because the thought of that ground battle would be epic. Finally someone would follow Werdum to the ground.
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
that would be fun.
but cain might murder kongunt.
gspmademegay - February 13, 2012
he couldnt finish kongo last time
And Kongo nearly knocked him out every round.
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
still
no real need for a rematch, since cain’s W wasn’t really anything to debate. there’s so much rematches going on i rather see som fresh matchups.
the guy with the big nose - February 13, 2012
i agree
But I wouldn’t mind it at all because I wanted Werdum vs. Mir
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
This could be a pretty good fight
But I also wanted to see Werdum vs Mir more than I want to see this.
Sidenote: how fuckin’ tiny are Mir’s eyes? good lord.

great matchup
Although I favour Cain to pick apart Mir standing.
nannerb - February 13, 2012
Same here. On the feet, Cain is just faster with his movement and strikes, and he throws combinations well. While there is a threat if the fight hits the ground, I can’t see the fight getting there.
chrisbboy82 - February 13, 2012
And if it does, it ain't like Mir has never been pounded out before.
Sweet Scientist - February 13, 2012
Hells yeah, this is the fight I wanted. There’s other challenges for Werdum but there’s not many for Mir, it’ll pose some interesting questions for both fighters.
Superstitiousmma - February 13, 2012
I’m not a fan of this match-up, mainly because I think Cain will win. Also he’s coming off a KO loss, while Mir is on a pretty decent three fight winning streak. Who exactly do they have in mind for the next title shot after JDS vs Reem? Because in my mind Mir would be a great option, if he can win another fight in the meantime (like Werdum for example). To me it’s obvious they want to fast track Cain back to title contention, and they’re planning on using Mir for it. I don’t like this.
Horselover Fat - February 13, 2012
i agree
But its weird cuz the UFC always used to try and get Mir to a title shot.
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
I think the UFC brass thinks
Mir has a better shot at Cain then he does against Werdum.
40 Cal. - February 13, 2012
i dont see why they would think that
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Winner/loser matches aren’t nearly as rare as people like to claim, especially for a fighter coming off a title fight. And while Cain will be rightfully favored, I wouldn’t count Mir out of this either.
Chris Hall - February 13, 2012 via Android app
Well, either way I don’t like it. I think these two fighters should be kept on separate paths to a title shot. And really, I’d be fine if Mir got the next one just by his last three wins. Instead they kill one of them for the near future.. and as I mentioned I don’t see who else is out there right now with a good case for a shot. What happens if Cain wins, you want to throw him in there again for the title with just one win? That would suck.
Horselover Fat - February 13, 2012
recd for cold logic.
gspmademegay - February 13, 2012
They’re making that fight because they want a main event that will sell, simple as that. If you put Werdum instead of Cain, you might get 100 000 less buys or whatever. Multiply that by 50$.. 5 million $.
Kenya_MMA - February 13, 2012
that is a really good point
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
see my previous statement.
gspmademegay - February 13, 2012
Good point.
Horselover Fat - February 13, 2012
Odd that this happens
But I completely agree with both of you.
Sucks though, I don’t like this fight either. Big Nog was beating Mir on the feet, and Nog does not have anywhere near the range of tools standing that Cain has.
I can’t see Mir taking Cain down, and honestly I expect this fight to look like Mir’s fight against Carwin. Hopefully I will be proved wrong.
Lauren J Darkbloom - February 13, 2012
Cain is going to T(KO) Mur like Carwin did!
Maybe not in as devastating fashion as the uppercuts Shane landed but I believe he’s going to put him out rather quickly. Big Nog was easily beating Mir to the punch and had him rocked pretty bad before the beautiful sub Mir pulled off and Nog’s striking is pretty slow compared to Cain’s.
40 Cal. - February 13, 2012
ya this might happen
Or Mir will pull off another crazy submission. If he can catch Big Nog he can catch Cain
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Cain won’t make the same mistake Big Nog made. Cain will continue punching.
sexysassytravismmafan - February 13, 2012
true but i can see mir pulling guard here
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
After seeing what Big Nog did to Mir on the feet
I can see Cain destroying Mir.
I think Mir vs Werdum and Cain vs Carwin would have been much better matchup’s.
Chin Check - February 13, 2012
He could do it but I don't see Cain trying for a
Sub when he has him rocked but it’s possible.
40 Cal. - February 13, 2012
Good Fight
Do not sleep, this could easily go the distance.
Well there’s always Velasquez’s wrestling.
VeeisAnimated - February 13, 2012
cain cant smother mir like brock did imo
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
I could see Frank doing good
but even Big Nog was lighting him up. I think Cain by TKO in the 1st.
NEW-HAMPSHIRE - February 13, 2012
Cain > Big Nog standing
Big Nog > Mir standing
Cain > Lesnar
Lesnar > Mir
Cain wins MMAMath.
sexysassytravismmafan - February 13, 2012
Mir Ko’d nog and ripped his arm off
Afrotikiman - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Yeah. I’m not counting that first fight. Mir lost the standup in the last fight.
sexysassytravismmafan - February 13, 2012
Kongo and JDS have touched Cain’s chin. I have to think Mir should land something big and unlike Kongo, he will follow Cain down and get a Sub
Afrotikiman - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Wow I guess I’m goin with Mir :-/
Afrotikiman - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Frank's got a good shot if he can work his jitz.
Cain’s not going to fall for Mir’s fake jab like Congo did. Mir’s boxing is good, but man did he get tagged badly by Big Nog. If he can avoid the stand up game, get it to the ground, let his jitz fly (even the bottom game) he’s got a good shot.
Body Triangle - February 13, 2012
this ^ exactly
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, but he won’t. Just like any grappler that finds moderate success in the stand-up, he thinks he can take anyone on the feet and wants to “test” himself. He thinks he is better striking than he really is. He needs to realize that sometimes, it’s just better to stick with what you’re good at.
BeefSupreme - February 13, 2012
All the way back to Ken Shamrock!
But even if Mir wanted to take it down, I just don’t recall him having anywhere near the explosiveness needed to take down a Wrestler of Cain’s caliber. Cain dictates the location here, IMO, and that means bad things for Frank.
DankNabbot - February 13, 2012
I disagree about his bottom game.
Mir is a real feast- or- famine guard player. He either gets the sweep/ sub, or gets pounded out. I think Cain is strong enough to avoid the sub/ sweep, and will pour it on Frank with punches and elbows.
ElliotMatheny - February 13, 2012
Frank's 5 losses
are all KO/TKOs. He’ll go down.
sexysassytravismmafan - February 13, 2012
it does amaze me how well hes done considering how weal his chin is
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Mir's chin isn't that bad
Heavyweights hit really, really hard. And of those five, I think only the Carwin fight was an according-to-Hoyle knockout. The rest were TKOs where he retained consciousness. And Carwin can knock anyone out.
Dave Strummer - February 13, 2012
Not sure if I’m remembering correctly but I thought he was out against Lesnar in the second fight.
BeefSupreme - February 13, 2012
he was
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Nah
Afrotikiman - February 13, 2012 via mobile
nope
Full Mount - February 13, 2012
your explanation of the Big Nog fight?
Despite he’s recent KO of Schaub, he is not known for KO power
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
That is why he didn’t KO Mir
Afrotikiman - February 13, 2012 via mobile
just barely
benten20 - February 13, 2012
This is a terrible fight for Mir in every way. I know he beat Big Nog, but if Cain hits him the way Nog did, he will be out by the time he hits the ground. Cain has way faster hands than Mir and I don’t really see how Mir wins
StevenGiles - February 13, 2012
Submission
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
I don’t think he’ll be awake by the time it hits the ground. I thought he was out in the last Big Nog fight. I was surprised it wasn’t stopped.
sexysassytravismmafan - February 13, 2012
if mir grabs a hold of cain and drags this to the ground then its a whole different ballgame
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Mir can’t take Cain down. Mir will go down from Cain’s punch. From there, Mir might have enough awareness to pull off a submission.
sexysassytravismmafan - February 13, 2012
your signature is the best iver ever seen.
gspmademegay - February 13, 2012

gspmademegay - February 13, 2012
you read my mind buddy
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
GSP made you gay
But Mir keeps you gay.
He’s working on the intricacies of positions that you don’t even know the name of.
menckenstein - February 13, 2012
so douchey.
gspmademegay - February 13, 2012
Do you think it's something he's worked on along with his martial arts training?
Or is it just natural to him? I try not to watch/read interviews with him on purpose because then I’m blinded by hatred and ignore the fact that he’s actually a pretty damn good fighter.
menckenstein - February 13, 2012
i think some people just have that gift.
gspmademegay - February 13, 2012
HAHAHA
That quote comes trolling my mind every time I hear about Mir.
spectaa - February 13, 2012
SIGGED
Piru P - February 13, 2012
Frank's Next Camp...
He better realize that his first fight with Big Nog inflated his striking ego alot, and thats been his strategy ever since then. His freak KO of Kongo did it even more. He abandoned what made him successful in the first place.
If Frank re-focuses on BJJ without spending so much time or gameplan on strategy, with his natural strength he can become the single most devastating submission artist in MMA history.
If he tries to stand with Cain he will get annihilated.
If he gets the fight to the ground, Cain would be in tons of problems, and probably get subbed rather quickly.
TriangleChoke99 - February 13, 2012
It’s been his strategy because his takedowns are shit-awful. He has the weakest wrestling I’ve seen this side of Nick Diaz.
crazybones - February 13, 2012
Annihilated on the feet?
I don’t see where people get this from…
warren305 - February 13, 2012
Yeah. He gets overwhelmed quickly and doesn’t take punches too well.
TriangleChoke99 - February 13, 2012
I dont think Cain has the technique to overwhelm Mir with volume
Or the power (al la Carwin), th overpower him with strength. I see Mir winning the standup battle as he is more well rounded and has better muay thai
warren305 - February 13, 2012
Cain is the better kickboxer from range
And has the best boxing from the clinch in the heavyweight division.
I think he smokes Mir.
discoandherpes - February 13, 2012
Well we are at an empass
Sig bet? I got Mir
warren305 - February 14, 2012
This is so bad for Mir
Unless Cain tries to grapple with him the entire fight…but even then, I’d bet on Cain pounding him out.
Hopefully they’ll put Cain in with JDS again. That’s a fight that could go many different ways if Cain survives the first knockdown.
crazybones - February 13, 2012
Cain will definatly beat Mir crisp boxing and pressure
MaZZacare - February 13, 2012
Big Nog should've KO'ed Mir when he had the chance
Cain will rip him to pieces
SSreporters - February 13, 2012
i was yelling at the TV when Big Nog dropped down for the sub
MaZZacare - February 13, 2012
YYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
M.Bison…YES!
Lets go Mir! I see some people being surprised, some people saying “Cain was never that good” etc., etc., after this one.
warren305 - February 13, 2012
Mir via TKO rd. 1
warren305 - February 13, 2012
JESUS
I like Frank Mir, but man … that is a bold statement, warren305!!!
glib_mf - February 13, 2012
Maybe not the rd and tko
But I got Mir. I think Cain’s good, just not as good as Mir. In fact, he’s my fav HW (other than Alistar)
Sig bet?
warren305 - February 14, 2012
The only way Mir wins this fight
Is by getting it to the ground. That being said if he does win then he gets a title shot no questions asked. However if he faces Dos Santos then he will be knocked out, because I don’t think he can take him down. Against Overeem, he might have a better chance.
benten20 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Great match-up...tough to pick a winner
I’ll go with Leonard Garcia via split-decision.
Baba Booey - February 13, 2012
He looks like Penn’s little brother or something.
thirdparty - February 13, 2012
Great fight
RolloTomasi - February 13, 2012
Am I the only one that thinks Cain dismantles Mir easily?
I don’t think this will be close at all.
Tim Bernier - February 13, 2012
I agree
Cain is way, way too fast and his TD’s are way too good for Mir to let his hands go.
TheFilt - February 13, 2012
i dont think Mir will mind getting taken down.
I hope he can win this fight, as he’s one of my favorite fighters, but stylistically it’s one of the worst match-ups in the division for him.
Loot - February 13, 2012
I think Cain would land a few shots,
take him down then let him up.
Rinse and repeat.
TheFilt - February 13, 2012
I think Cain will use his wrestling defensively to keep the fight standing, and bank on knocking Frank out.
Horselover Fat - February 13, 2012
Mixing it up makes it all more effective
I don’t think Mir could last with Cain’s pace, so I could definitely see him scoring the KO, too.
TheFilt - February 13, 2012
I honestly think Mir would look really stupid even thinking about trying to take Cain down.
He couldn’t get old Cro Cop to the mat.
