Dana White & Ariel Helwani chatted it up about UFC On Fuel Wednesday night.
Ariel Helwani caught up with UFC president Dana White for an extended interview following UFC On Fuel Wednesday night, discussing a slew of topics related to the card itself, Nick Diaz's situation and the political issues around it and his thoughts on a former UFC champion trying to get back in the Octagon.
Here are some of the topics covered in the 11-minute clip, one of the better ones Helwani and White have done in recent events:
He was pretty pissed about his hairy showing before the fight.
Also, I’m having a hard time figuring out what about Macho Man or the Village People that Dana objects to, if it isn’t the fact that they are gay. Taken in a vacuum, Macho Man is actually a pretty appropriate walkout song.
Yeah, though I’m obviously ribbing you in the comment below, I don’t see a problem with Macho Man either. It’s often used in basketball games and such, isn’t it? It’s a classic arena theme.
I don’t think that Dana really hates anyone (except maybe Steve Mazagatti) but I also don’t think he’s the most comfortable with even the slightest suggestion of gay stuff (like Hallman’s terrible shorts).
Well, I can understand anger towards the shorts Hallman wore and I’m not a homophobic person. I don’t drop fifty bucks on a pay per view to see a guy’s nuts. I’d prefer to just worry about who is going to win as opposed to worrying about what’s going to fall out.
As for Herman, Dana does sound like he’s more disappointed with Herman just not taking his career seriously. I like jokesters just as much as the next guy, but he should have rolled through Struve tonight.
While if I had a gun to my head and had to say, I would guess that Dana is homophobic. However, after I saw the video and how he said it, he was annoyed at the clowning and then not backing it up, not the gay connotations of a Village People song.
Just because you can't relate to something doesn't make you a homophobe.
People are nuts over this shit, and need to get over it. I can’t relate to pink scarves, just like I can’t relate to corny dragon-skull-fire-sparkle shirts. There’s an element to both “life styles” that I have zero interest in. That’s it. I don’t hate either group, just don’t want any part of those people.
i seriously doubt he was really pissed about the hairy showing
and nothing is wrong with it other then herman lost and the stuff and antics were his claim to fame which Dana of course has to say is a no-no. Its not homophobia, its the fact that he lost
It's not the fact he lost. If it was he'd be busting Lawlor's balls
for his elaborate entrances and gassing out by the third round. Does Dana hate gay people? No. But he does live and see things in a heteronormative/homophobic bubble.
I’m really not. He may or may not be. But to state that the fact he has no problem being near naked or almost naked men is a sign he’s not a homophobe is just nuts. What the hell does one thing have to do with the other?
Except it doesn't work that way. And I would hope that you'd be smart enough to know that.
It’s like defending Michael Richards’ infamous diatribe, using all of his non-psychotic interactions with black people as evidence. And MMA, in general, is a hypermasculine performance so that stuff isn’t tied to homophobia.
But I do think he’s worried about the image of the sport. Those who know nothing of MMA, and don’t want to know anything of MMA, have at times referred to fighters in the sport as “a bunch of sweaty guys rolling around in a cage” or view the sport itself as being “pretty gay”. Dana simply doesn’t want people tuning in to UFC for the first time and seeing someone like Dave Herman coming out to Macho Man, he feels it sends out the wrong message about MMA.
The fur coat he had on was scarier than the pink scarf! Is he the illegitimate son of George “The Animal” Steele? Holy cow, he should have shaved the Zanfief from Street Fighter shape into that mess! Fun card, otherwise, though.
He’s a huge fan and I really believe he let’s his emotions rule his decision making way to much. This has positive and negative effects right now but as the sport grows it’ll only cause problems.
I know Tim Sylvia is a joke to a lot of people, but he’s still probably more skilled than guys like Rob Broughton, Phil De Fries, Mark Hunt, Christian Morecraft, Ben Rothwell, John-Olav Einemo. I don’t know if Sylvia’s ever looked as bad as Rothwell looked in his last fight.
Also, a Struve vs Sylvia fight would probably be more competitive than people are willing to admit.
He’s got skill, but think about this: before he left the UFC, Tim was one of the slowest, least athletic heavyweights out there. He’s now almost 4 years older, and is even slower and even less athletic, AND hasn’t faced top level competition for years. Guys like Cain and Dos Santos would eat him alive. I think Struve would be too much for him as well, but that’d at least be an interesting match-up.
He looked awful against Wagner, and against Mercer. But with the right strategy and conditioning, he could beat a lot of the lower level fighters in the heavyweight division. If Sylvia is smart enough to take Hunt down, he could beat him down easily there. If it stays standing, it’ll be ugly and I can see it going either way to be honest.
The heavyweight division still isn’t that good, no matter how much people would like to pretend it is. It will never be as talent filled as the light-heavyweight division, let alone the welterweight and lightweight divisions.
I did not bring up Velasquez or Dos Santos, I brought up the lower tier level guys. The few elite guys like Dos Santos, Overeem, Velasquez, and Werdum would all murder him. Also guys like Kongo, Mir, Schaub, Browne, and Lavar Johnson would beat him badly too. But the UFC heavyweight division has guys like Joey Beltran, and it wasn’t too long ago that the UFC had Paul Buentello on main cards. Anyone want to argue that someone like Beltran and Phil De Fries are guys that are great that deserve to be in the UFC?
Also, I’m far from a Sylvia fan. Probably the happiest I’ve ever been watching a UFC fight was when Couture ending his boring title reign at UFC 68. Also, watching Fedor destroy him was pretty awesome stuff too.
but his fight with BJ was stopped, albeit due to a cut, but it was stopped nonetheless and is listed as a TKO loss. Not that big of deal, as I think Dana was just hyped and got carried away, but he was wrong.
It was a doctor stoppage. Dana probably doesn’t consider that “being finished.” Diego was worse but that’s like saying Belfort “finished” Couture at UFC 46.
and just to clarify, nobody in my section was booing Struve. We were all shouting “STRUUUUUUUUVE.” I think when he was leaving the arena he was getting more high-fives than almost every other fighter from that night. He was a definite crowd favorite.
Also, we could see the FOX platform where Glazer and Stann were broadcasting from. It was telling that Stann was constantly turning around to watch what was going on in the octagon, but Glazer couldn’t give two shits what was happening.
Intro: Ariel introduces himself and Dana while Dana stands there looking like an angry sunburnt penis
Ariel: (question about fights that just happened)
Dana: so-and-so was the toughest dude so-and-so ever fought
Ariel (question about fights that might/will happen in the future)
Dana: we’ll see what happens, who knows
Ariel: (question about fighters)
Dana: lol I never talk to the fighters
Ariel: (question about basically anything on earth, from the past into the future)
Dana: (Slytherin-style lip-licking) who knows, we’ll see what happens
Ariel: (question about controversial topics)
Dana: WE GETS NO RESPECT. SO-AND-SO IS INCONSISTENT. HEH HEH THEY’RE CONSISTENT AT BEING INCONSISTENT!
Bring him back. I’m no fan, but he was a big part of the UFC’s success and he can still sell tickets in certain matchups. We need to remember, most people still remember him as the hulking UFC HW champ and have no idea about his struggles since leaving.
I don’t get Dana’s problem with Herman’s hair, scarf and walk-out music. It seems they want guys to show some personality, but only if it’s inside their accepted norm. Definitely smells a little of homophobia to me.
Also I’d like Tim Sylvia back.. he’ll never be a top 10 fighter again, but he could serve as a gatekeeper. He does still have a name, and I think he’d be a tough fight for a lot of guys in the UFC. I think he could beat at least Broughton, DeFries, Einemo, Herman, Rothwell, Griggs, Morecraft, Russow. Those kinds of guys. He’s almost 36 years old though so it has to happen now or never.
… if it’s more that Dana feels like Herman is mocking MMA as opposed to just making jokes.
I didn’t see the weigh-ins or walk-in’s so I’m not sure. But just because you don’t fully embrace and rub your face in the oiled, sculpted, shaved, six-pack abs of homosexuality doesn’t mean you’re a homophobe. People love to throw that term around any time you say anything most heterosexual males would say.
Trust me, I’m not too worried about that stuff generally. Just something I feel like I’ve picked up on in regards to Dana. It’s open to interpretation, since he doesn’t really make clear why he found it so offensive.
Exactly, that’s what I’m saying. Tim Sylvia would be a good gatekeeper, and he would definitely beat that lower tier of the heavyweight division.
I think the only thing that could probably keep him away is if Sylvia’s asking price is too much. Don’t know what his price tag is but Breen was recently talking about how financially well off Sylvia is at this point and how smart he’s been money-wise.
I'm not sure I'd like to see Tim back in the UFC just yet.
Like Helwani and White discussed, he hasn’t really beaten any name opponents since leaving the UFC, unless you want to count Paul Buentello. He was knocked out by Ray Mercer and just last year he was knocked out by Abe Wagner. Plus, his last fight was just awful to watch. He’s walked into almost all of his recent fights at over 300 lbs. and just looks to be in terrible shape. He still looks 300+ lbs. in the video he put out.
If he wants back in, he needs to fight and beat at least one more top name and drop all of that fucking fat. Maybe then I’d like to see him return and possibly face Stefan Struve.
There aren’t a huge amount of credible opponents out there for him to beat. The Wagner fight he shouldn’t have taken, it was on short notice and he was very out of shape. I think he has looked fairly good in some of the other fights I’ve seen, good point though about his last one. Either way he still has some name value, and could serve some sort of purpose in the UFC (at least for a few fights). I think there was even more of a case for it before they announced the SF heavyweights coming over though, now it’s not as valuable but I’d still like to see it.
That’s just your opinion, man. He clearly had a big problem with the body hair, scarf, and song. Why? He even said something about it before the fights. The fight and his performance there is a completely different issue.
I don’t see how that’s relevant. I’m talking about Dave Herman, not Forrest Griffin. It wasn’t just the hair, it was a pink scarf and a Village People song that he didn’t like either.
Where is the usual gray box with a summary for us poor folks stuck at work under the mercy of the IT nerds who email me if im on youtube for even a second…lol
What's wrong about walking in to Macho Man and pink scarfs?
blutspender - February 16, 2012
I'm not going to call Dana a homophobe
but there might be some other cultural influences at play there…like homophobia.
Dave Strummer - February 16, 2012
If Dana is homophobic, it's definitely in a Ted Haggard / Larry Craig sort of way.
menckenstein - February 16, 2012
I doubt Dana is gay,
I think he’s just a homophobe.
ElliotMatheny - February 16, 2012
dude so wrong if herman would have won the fight he would have said how hilarious he finds his antics.
stop with all the dana is a homophobe Bs

While if I had a gun to my head and had to say, I would guess that Dana is homophobic. However, after I saw the video and how he said it, he was annoyed at the clowning and then not backing it up, not the gay connotations of a Village People song.

Of pink scarfs annoying you and manage to be on the weigh in stage without poking out your own eyes.

Just because you can't relate to something doesn't make you a homophobe.

Let’s compare him to Gonzaga
That’s fucking insane.

And many a time has to stand there while they remove them from a weigh in. Homophobic behavior at its finest there.

So do I, but Dana actually has a point
Plus, I love the fact that he gets so worked up like a regular avid fan, which ultimately is what he is.

thats an upside and downside.
He’s a huge fan and I really believe he let’s his emotions rule his decision making way to much. This has positive and negative effects right now but as the sport grows it’ll only cause problems.

yeah that was forgettable

Our Bovine Public - February 16, 2012

true but i think obviously less memorable then the simpson markes fight

He would have probably made it back too if he didn’t get ko’d by that guy from tuf who got his head split open.
Tats16 - February 16, 2012
i wouldnt mind either and the fight with Abe Wagner was stopped early imo.
benten20 - February 16, 2012
He looked decent against Buentello
Better than Struve did, anyway ;)
menckenstein - February 16, 2012

Sylvia looked pretty bad versus Wagner, early stoppage or not, and his bout with Ray Mercer was an absolute disgrace.

I think there are some potentially entertaining matchups for Sylvia in the UFC
Keith Moon - February 16, 2012

I have a suspicious feeling that the NSAC is going to go easy on Nick.
Sure, based on precedent he could get a year but with Dana on his side, (he clearly is) I just see it going in Diaz’s favor.

NICE
YUSing, though.

Sylvia
Bring him back. I’m no fan, but he was a big part of the UFC’s success and he can still sell tickets in certain matchups. We need to remember, most people still remember him as the hulking UFC HW champ and have no idea about his struggles since leaving.
BJJDenver - February 16, 2012
Yeah, lets put him up against Overeem and witness the first death in the UFC.
MicahtheCynic - February 16, 2012
Horselover Fat - February 16, 2012
I wonder...
Tacoknight - February 16, 2012
Trust me, I’m not too worried about that stuff generally. Just something I feel like I’ve picked up on in regards to Dana. It’s open to interpretation, since he doesn’t really make clear why he found it so offensive.
Horselover Fat - February 16, 2012
its simple he lost if Herman won we wouldnt hear about this at all
benten20 - February 16, 2012
Exactly, that’s what I’m saying. Tim Sylvia would be a good gatekeeper, and he would definitely beat that lower tier of the heavyweight division.
I think the only thing that could probably keep him away is if Sylvia’s asking price is too much. Don’t know what his price tag is but Breen was recently talking about how financially well off Sylvia is at this point and how smart he’s been money-wise.
RagingNoodles - February 16, 2012
He hasn’t made any big purchases other than the Rascal.
Machiel Van - February 16, 2012
Please let him KO Rothwell outof the UFC. He’s just terrible to watch.
Machiel Van - February 16, 2012

Maybe then I’d like to see him return and possibly face Stefan Struve.
kreally - February 16, 2012
he made 265 in his last fight
benten20 - February 16, 2012
There aren’t a huge amount of credible opponents out there for him to beat. The Wagner fight he shouldn’t have taken, it was on short notice and he was very out of shape. I think he has looked fairly good in some of the other fights I’ve seen, good point though about his last one. Either way he still has some name value, and could serve some sort of purpose in the UFC (at least for a few fights). I think there was even more of a case for it before they announced the SF heavyweights coming over though, now it’s not as valuable but I’d still like to see it.
Horselover Fat - February 16, 2012
its not homophobia seriously this is getting annoying.
its simply the fact that he lost and doesnt take anything seriously.
benten20 - February 16, 2012
That’s just your opinion, man. He clearly had a big problem with the body hair, scarf, and song. Why? He even said something about it before the fights. The fight and his performance there is a completely different issue.
Horselover Fat - February 16, 2012
if he won you wouldnt hear a word about it
the body hair is bullshit simply because of this
benten20 - February 16, 2012
when has dana said a word about this^
benten20 - February 16, 2012
I don’t see how that’s relevant. I’m talking about Dave Herman, not Forrest Griffin. It wasn’t just the hair, it was a pink scarf and a Village People song that he didn’t like either.
Horselover Fat - February 16, 2012
he didnt like those because he lost thats its
benten20 - February 16, 2012
And yet he likes Tom Lawlor's entrances that have caused Lawlor to gas and lose fights?
sun yue - February 16, 2012
And he criticized them before Herman lost?
sun yue - February 16, 2012
