UFC veteran Jay Silva became the first man to ever submit Ultimate Fighter winner Kendall Grove* last night at Superior Cage Combat 4 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the co-main event (also featuring two UFC vets) lightweight John Gunderson submitted Justin Buchholz to take the SCC LW title.
Sherdog was at the scene:
Silva didn't just walk right through his much taller opponent; he had some difficulty in dealing with Grove's long reach and quick hands. Grove landed several thudding kicks to Silva's leg and his jab and hooks were causing his opponent some grief. Still, the Huntington Beach, Calif.-based fighter was resilient and wanted to stand and bang with Grove whenever he could.
He got his wish in the second, and it paid dividends as an errant right hand landed on Grove's temple, buckling his legs. "Da Spyder" tried to regroup and hide the fact that he was hurt, but his rubbery legs betrayed him and he eventually crumbled to the canvas. Silva (8-5) pounced and doled out a vicious attack, but Grove (14-10) was able to survive and pull guard. However, Silva scrambled out and latched on the choke, ending the fight when Grove was rendered unconscious.
* In an MMA bout. A BE reader informed me that Grove has been submitted in a grappling contest by Marcus Wilson (video).
Complete results:
Jay Silva def. Kendall Grove via Submission (Arm-Triangle Choke) at 1:52 of Round 2.
John Gunderson def. Justin Buchholz via submission (Kimura)at 2:34 of Round 3.
Jamie Yager def. Danny Davis Jr. via unanimous decision.
Paulo Goncalves Silva def. Dominique Robinson via unanimous decision.
Brandon Bender def. Marlin Weikel via submission (Triangle Choke) at 2:30 of Round 3.
Walter Harris def. Anthony Hamilton via KO at 1:15 of Round 1.
Jimmy Jones def. Joao Victor via submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 3:49 of Round 3.

Wow,
that’s a massive accomplishment for Silva. I mean, out of all the fighters Kendall has fought (Maia, Herman, Boetch) he gets submitted by Jay Silva? Insanity.

Kendall prob didn’t realize what he was going up against. Similar to Werdum facing the then-unknown JDS.
jpayne - February 17, 2012
That's like comparing Ellenberger to Anderson Silva
Charles Awad - February 17, 2012
Except Silva isn't some unknown phenom.
He’s a halfway-decent regional fighter who got booted from the UFC after consecutive losses to Dollaway and Leben…not exactly an accurate comparison with JDS.
Scott Haber - February 17, 2012
My point is only that Kendall may not have respected Silva’s sub skills which then made him more susceptible to getting caught in a sub — a moral hazard of sorts. Along those lines, we know Werdum didn’t respect JDS’s power by the simple fact that he wasn’t flopping every two seconds like against Alistair.
jpayne - February 17, 2012
Would you call Jay Silva a "UFC vet"
VeeisAnimated - February 17, 2012
barely
RolloTomasi - February 17, 2012
more likely a good punch in the head made his submission defense not so great.
Tats16 - February 17, 2012
That's what I think
To say I’m not a fan of “da spyder” would be an understatement….. So I’m not defending him at all

Team Dagger!!
Chris Hall - February 17, 2012 via Android app
Seriously. And this is the same Jay Silva
who got out-grappled by Chris Leben for three rounds.
Scott Haber - February 17, 2012
And KO'd in 6 seconds by Lombard I think
SSreporters - February 17, 2012
That fight was . . . hmmm . . .
I don’t know but I think Jay Silva said something bad about Lombard’s mother or something.
VeeisAnimated - February 17, 2012
He did talk some shit
The first thing Lombard said after the fight, literally as he was being pulled off, was something to the effect of ‘Be nice, bro’
Chris Groves - February 18, 2012
It certainly helped that Silva rocked him first.
pud333 - February 17, 2012
This makes me happy.

Maia is exposed
Chris Hall - February 17, 2012 via Android app
Damn Maia. Damn.
I still find it odd that the last person that Demian Maia submitted was Chael Sonnen.
He hasn’t stopped an opponent since that fight.
And some how, some way, Sonnen actually finished a fight before the final bell via SUBMISSION.

Ha
Jamie Yager
sexysassytravismmafan - February 17, 2012
Wow! He beat the evil referee from the WWF!
Steve W - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Damn.
Not a good look for Grove.

I tend to always root for the UFC cast-offs to succeed as much as possible
I mean, I know BOTH are UFC castoffs…but Grove was the guy I was more familiar with.
I would have liked to see him put a good run together and maybe get back to the UFC.
Chris Groves - February 17, 2012
Yeah he just beat Minowa last month. Big setback....
Brandon Starr - February 17, 2012
I can't stand Kendall Grove
So LOL to him and big ups to Jay Silva.
Jamie Yager is the afro guy from TUF 11 right?
SSreporters - February 17, 2012
yeah, now training at BlackHouse.
VeeisAnimated - February 17, 2012
It still all started with Grove's glass jaw.
Steve W - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Or being 6'4 and fighting at 185
Where he frequently got snapped like a twig by any power puncher.
SSreporters - February 17, 2012
In other news
Yager lasted a whole 3 rounds
BROCKLESNAR!!!!! - February 17, 2012
Also,
props to Yager. I’m the only one who rooted for the guy during TUF, I hope he keeps improving.
Dustin Luff - February 17, 2012
I thought Grove's nickname was "Da Spyda"
What’s this “Da Spyder” stuff? I am confuse.
Baba Booey - February 17, 2012
For your health.
Ya dingus!
EyeHeartMMA - February 17, 2012
i agree it’s either the spider or da spyda, u dont mix those 2, good eye ;)
ShogunDaChamp - February 18, 2012
UFC veteran? Really? He has had 2 fights in the UFC, and he lost both of them.
yonsson - February 17, 2012
Well I guess Kendal won't be getting a call for that Hawaii card...
Shit I figured he had 2 wins in row this would have been a 3rd against decent competition and he’d certainly get the nod to add some hometown flavor to the Hawaii card but nope back to the drawing board… Oh well.
RECE ROCK - February 17, 2012 via mobile
I think he has plenty of time to win another fight or two
considering that Hawaii card has to be at least 5 months away.
av1o3 - February 17, 2012
Goddamnit Minowa, that should have been you choking him out.
Ak.Death - February 17, 2012
lol
RandyCouture'sDivorceLawyer - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Wow I guess Grove's really hit rock bottom...
now that he’s been submitted by UFC’s matchmaker.
mjanecek - February 17, 2012
that would be
JOE silva.
OneFitchTwoFitchRedFitchBlueFitch - February 17, 2012
