Two of the UFC's heaviest-handed big men have agreed to throw down in New Jersey on May 5th at UFC on Fox 3, when Pat Barry will meet Lavar Johnson, according to an announcement on UFC.com this morning:
Get ready for heavyweight fireworks as verbal agreements are in for a showdown between knockout artists Lavar "Big" Johnson and Pat "HD" Barry on the main card of FOX's third event this May 5 in New Jersey
Barry and Johnson are both coming off brutal knockout victories and neither man is prone to going to a decision, so the UFC is likely hoping for fireworks with this booking. Johnson fought only a few days, making his UFC debut in Chicago on the second Fox card and becoming the first man to truly crack the chin of Joey Beltran, knocking him out with vicious uppercuts in the first round. Barry competed just a week before that, turning off Christian Morecraft's lights with a well-placed right hook and some follow-up punches on the ground after staving off a few close submission attempts.
Pat "HD" Barry (7-4)
W Christian Morecraft (KO) - UFC on FX 1
L Stefan Struve (submission) - UFC on Versus 6
L Cheick Kongo (KO) - UFC on Versus 4
Lavar "Big" Johnson (16-5)
W Joey Beltran (KO) - UFC on Fox 2
L Shawn Jordan (submission) - Strikeforce Challengers
L Shane del Rosario (submission) - Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva

Victory by flying gogoplata.

Dana and Joe are going to promise us FIREWORKS
Unfortunately the fireworks will be provided by a company with a flooded warehouse.

Awwwwwww sheeeeeeeeeeiiiiit!
Patrick Tenney - February 2, 2012
Pat Barry 11-4?
Where did that record come from?
William Wilson - February 2, 2012
UFC undisputed 3
mannfretti - February 2, 2012
EA MMA is WAYYYYYYYY better btw.
mannfretti - February 2, 2012
The Undisputed 3 demo surpasses EA MMA in almost every way.
But that’s way off topic and you sound like an EA fanboy bringing it up out of thin air like that.
I_Mad - February 2, 2012 via mobile
No.
Jonathan. - February 3, 2012
oh yeah
I’ve played both. and UFC 3 is better. And that record is probably a typo or someone just forgetting. I thought it was odd too
wolfman13 - February 2, 2012
The UFC undisputed reference was to the record error, EA MMA comment a tribute to my attention disorder.
I’m a fan of the Fight Night Engine, not necessarily EA.
I preferred the ESPN football game over EA’s Madden and the Konami soccer game (I think its called Pro Evo in USA) over EA’s FIFA.

PES > FIFA

I know it as winning eleven!

Not since like 4 or 5 years.
Sweet Scientist - February 2, 2012
Yeah
Was coming in to say that.
Charles Awad - February 2, 2012
Whoops.
My bad…fixed it.
Scott Haber - February 2, 2012
I asked for this fight and got it.
Maybe Dana is a fan of BE.
fightersvizion - February 2, 2012 via mobile
then i blame you for this.
POW - February 2, 2012
Definitely not

"It's unclear whether this fight will take place on the Fox main card or the FX prelims"
Doesn’t it say in the announcement that it will be on the main card?
DonnMcslick - February 2, 2012 via mobile
Actually it does.. hmm. That would be pretty bizarre though, seems like a FX or FUEL show if you have this one and then Diaz vs Miller headlining.
Horselover Fat - February 2, 2012
And Brookhouse just wrote an article discussing this

::sigh:: my reading comprehension function is only activated after my second cup of coffee.

Awesome! I doubt Johnson will be able to match Barry’s speed in and out of the pocket—it’ll be another Hardonk type KO.
thuggis - February 2, 2012
If Barry uses those kicks he has as well, he should be able to beat Johnson. Johnson did look pretty good against Beltran though, but I think that Barry has the more technical standup.
chrisbboy82 - February 2, 2012
I'm expecting a KO. Also, I just feel like posting this.
Damon O. - February 2, 2012
If this is actually main card, put me on suicide watch.
T.C. Engel - February 2, 2012 via mobile
Barry's popularity makes him
acceptable for a main card, nobody had ever hurt the MExecutioner like Johnson did, this card is on Fox, they need fan friendly fights.
It makes sense to put this one on a fox card or have it cued to fill out time if the MC fights end early.
Just view the Fox cards as not necessarily made for the hardcore fan as main target. Dana knows you’ll throw down for a ppv, he’s trying to get more eyeballs right now. Short, predominantly standing fights with a finish tend to help in this regard and barry-johnson seems to fit that mold.
mannfretti - February 2, 2012
Really?
I think this fight is fun as hell. Besides, you can pretty much guarantee it will be short.
Dave Strummer - February 2, 2012
This fight will attract more casual fans than Miller/Diaz. Sad, but true.
Shnak - February 2, 2012
It's on main card
And I like it
SSreporters - February 2, 2012
Barry by TKO
due to leg kicks.
NEW-HAMPSHIRE - February 2, 2012
HD is gonna treat Lavar like he left marinara stains on his stove top.
Snatchl - February 2, 2012
So
He’s just going to leave him there and do nothing?
Damon O. - February 2, 2012
Barry goes on record saying he wants a submission win
Then gets Lavar Johnson. Is it a coincidence?
Baby Wads - February 2, 2012
Lavar might be better than him
in terms of grappling.
Actually, I’m pretty sure he is.
TheFilt - February 2, 2012
they must really not want him to grow the fro.
mannfretti - February 2, 2012
WAR DICK JOKE
Paulo Filho's Psychiatrist - February 2, 2012
UFC can market Lavar Johnson on FOX
Bring up his shooting incident and it can get viewers emotionally attached to him, too bad Pat Barry will KO him though.
Elitex10x - February 2, 2012
Not bad
but I would have preferred Johnson/Mitrione
Shaun32887 - February 2, 2012
I think either man can knock the other one out in this one. Barry should have a slight edge in technique, but Johnson will be the much bigger guy and packs a mean punch.
Actually looking at Johnson’s record, he’s never been KO’d in his career, only a TKO corner stoppage loss in his first pro fight. Other than that he has one injury loss and three submission defeats, but we know Barry won’t be able to exploit that. Barry only has one KO loss as we know and a couple of subs. Anyway, pretty rare for HW sluggers to have so few (T)KO losses like this, should be fun scrap!
Horselover Fat - February 2, 2012
Barry has a lot more than a slight edge in technique.
Day Man - February 2, 2012
True, I realized that after I had posted. Overall I think his technical prowess is severely overrated, but you are right he should be substantially better than Johnson either way.
Horselover Fat - February 2, 2012
Ohhh Snap...
S**t just got real !
Incognegro - February 2, 2012
I really hope Pat kicks the ever loving shit out of his legs.
I don’t think he has thrown a lot of leg kicks in his last few fights.
