Fans and media have been celebrating since Dana White and the UFC announced that with the new Fox deal the Gladiator Man intro will retired. Good news is that UFC 143 will be the first time that people will be able to see the updated intro and it is fantastic.
The working title of the opener is 'Evolution' because it follows the evolution of the sport from the days of Royce Gracie vs Ken Shamrock all the way through the Zuffa Era. Featuring highlights with the likes of Georges St. Pierre, Matt Hughes, and Chuck Liddell, the UFC has decided to showcase the fighters that helped build the sport and promotion to the power house that it is today.
The footage was cut by Digital Domain, James Cameron's production company. A lot of the footage required digital updating since much of the video was originally not shot in high definition. The music was scored by Hans Zimmer, the man who wrote the music for Inception and Gladiator.
Dana White wouldn't give an exact figure but did say that the new opener cost the UFC an 'obscene' amount of money. The UFC did contract another production company as well. Dana said that elements of their video would be used in other television spots.

Scott C. Broussard - February 2, 2012
no
you’ll probably end up with this…
[i’ve been on BE for so long and still can’t post a gif correctly. sigh.]

The link he posted
Didn’t allow hotlinking, though, so maybe he did it right but couldn’t get a picture to show up in the preview.

Me too brotha. Me too. Ugh

lordrelay - February 2, 2012
I met Coleman at Xtreme Couture just before UFC 100...
It was an amazing night. Just got done doing muay thai (taught by Ryan Couture, who i had not had the pleasure of seeing fight yet), and i sit down on their bleachers and who sits down next to me but the Hammer. My only question for him was what the hell was going through his mind right after he won that fight. His reaction was priceless, as he answered that it wasn’t until he was horizontal with the ropes that he realized he wasn’t going to make it. The embarassment was temepered by the amazing victory, which he did not think was even possible given the sudden change in rules which Pride dropped on him. He had expected a 3 round fight with Igor, only to have the Pride brass drop an unlimited time-limit fight on him right before. Here’s to the Hammer, still my favorite MMA hero (who doesn’t have a mustache).
Fizban - February 3, 2012
sounds gud
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - February 2, 2012
i am excite.
Who’s buying the PPV?
phucket - February 2, 2012
Heh heh, not this guy! I outsmarted them, I’m gonna stream it illeOHWHATTHEFUCK?!?!
BVandDietPepsi - February 2, 2012
This guy
The main card is gonna be nuts, I felt like I had to buy it.
Baby Wads - February 2, 2012
awwwwww yeah!
Kevin Jennison J. Zametov-St Pierre - February 2, 2012
We're a bunch of nerds.
Because most of us can pick out the exact moment they’re going to use for most of those fights.
BVandDietPepsi - February 2, 2012
what is the over under on Anderson clowning folks at least twice in this opening?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - February 2, 2012
um, two?
ill take the over
gspmademegay - February 2, 2012
I’ll take the under. Since it only features one clip of Silva and it is against Belfort, so it will be him knocking him out.
fbihop - February 3, 2012
I always liked Nate Quarry....
…..but you just know my man was scrolling down this list like:
“Please not again…oh please not again…..damn.”
BrothersGottaAndyHug - February 2, 2012
Now there’s two reasons to see UFC 143, heyooo.
DirtyML - February 2, 2012
Most make sense, but Cruz/Johnson?!
Sexytime - February 2, 2012
showing all the champs, probably best footage they could find.
DirtyML - February 2, 2012
Yup.,
And there wasn’t much to find in that fight.
BVandDietPepsi - February 2, 2012
Really? Because the Faber fight was not only more significant but way more exciting.
Sexytime - February 2, 2012
I dunno all Cruz fights have the same memory for me, him with his hands near his shoulders shifting side to side and going “hu hu hu” throwing some jab straight combination then moving the opposite direction shifting side to side.
DirtyML - February 2, 2012
they probably dont want footage of faber not winning
hewsdaddy - February 3, 2012
Good Cruz footage is like the Zapruder film.
Tim Burke - February 2, 2012
Its like bad cow bell
No such thing.
TheFilt - February 2, 2012
u mean
like grainy night time footage of the yeti from a backwoods somewhere wher ur left wondering
‘is it real?’ the whole time?
rohedron - February 3, 2012
I’m guessing it’s the suplexs he hit in that fight.
Dpez71 - February 2, 2012
Cruz-Johnson was really great and has Cruz dumping Johnson on his head with a great German suplex.
RagingNoodles - February 2, 2012
face the pain boys
the gladiators dead.
gspmademegay - February 2, 2012
I am hype!
Chris Hall - February 2, 2012 via Android app
Face the Pain replaced by Hans Zimmer?
I can live with that.
lolumad - February 2, 2012
watch it just be the theme to gladiator
DirtyML - February 2, 2012
It would still be exponentially better than shitty nu-metal.
lolumad - February 2, 2012
They could show late term abortions
and it would be more tasteful.
TheFilt - February 2, 2012
How do you know how abortions taste?
Scott C. Broussard - February 2, 2012
it was in international waters, okay? give him some slack.
thirdparty - February 2, 2012
You don’t know what hunger really means. Rich boy.
TheFilt - February 2, 2012
they could show a pussy monster and...
well, you get the idea.
gspmademegay - February 2, 2012
Should be GSP vs Serra 2 instead of Hughes 2.
RUSHoverSPIDER - February 2, 2012 via mobile
The head kick is a more dramatic individual moment than anything from the Serra rematch.
Those knees where brutal, but anything in the montage will be on screen for a few seconds, so it must be immediate.
Scott C. Broussard - February 2, 2012
For the gladiator:
Scott C. Broussard - February 2, 2012
I wish hendo/bisping was there :O
nastyem - February 2, 2012
so THATS why hes such a company man!
gspmademegay - February 2, 2012
Too much Lesnar not enough Bones Jones or Anderson Silva.
Meek Mill - February 2, 2012
I hear what you're saying
but I think 2 Lesnar highlights is perfect:
1. yes he was in the UFC and yes he had his moments (knocking Herring head over heels)
2. but he’s gone now, (Cain knocking him out)
polevaultking - February 3, 2012
Little do you guys know
Hans Zimmer is a huge fan of Stemm and sampled the shit out of Face the Pain.
discoandherpes - February 2, 2012
cruz/johnson
had suplex’s tho!!!

P86 - February 2, 2012
Why not just use the Baba O Reilly highlight?
It’s arguably the best highlight there is and already made.
Rabbit915 - February 2, 2012 via mobile
I don't believe the UFC has broadcast rights to that song...
…just in-Arena….
BrothersGottaAndyHug - February 2, 2012
Yup
Whoever airs the CSI stuff bought the entire Who back catalogue, I believe.
wonderfulspam - February 2, 2012
It's also too long
Goes on for quite a while, IIRC.
KGNLuc - February 3, 2012
Yeah, Baba O'Riley is over 5 minutes
One of favorite songs though…it was made to be used for highlights and montages…it evokes an instant feeling of nostalgia. At least for me anyway.
And the way it builds up…damn, I love it.
Chris Groves - February 3, 2012
Because it's like five minutes long
Horselover Fat - February 3, 2012
I remember going to UFC 136.
I was so excited to see it in person, but for some reason they didn’t show it, I was so damn pissed.
Sugel Mendoza - February 3, 2012
Awesome. I'm glad Dana went this route with the opener. War Coleman!!!!
lordrelay - February 2, 2012
Not enough Dan Hardy but I like it.
AusEagle - February 2, 2012
xFenixKnightx - February 2, 2012
not enough j.o.e. but i like it.
gspmademegay - February 2, 2012
Condit vs. Hardy should totally be there. Agreed.
Oh, and diving head-first into a choke in the Lytle fight!
SSreporters - February 2, 2012
GSP hyperextending his arm
Is worthy.
AusEagle - February 3, 2012
Not enough Kalib Starnes but I like it.
kendrick - February 3, 2012
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
Screw it I’m ordering it! Haven’t ordered one in a while.
Also, no Shogun? :’(
xFenixKnightx - February 2, 2012
just show shogun-hendo to kick off every ppv.
gspmademegay - February 2, 2012
Word!!!
xFenixKnightx - February 2, 2012
Hans Zimmer...Dana Did his homework rite!
DFW picked my favorite score writer for some of the best movies out there!
From Inception, to the Pirates of the Carribean, to the Dark Knight. You gotta buy his stuff and or pick up on one of his other contemporaries, Klaus Badelt.
Looking forward to watching the Intro now.
Win!!
JAYGK95 - February 2, 2012
AND his true classics
The Lion King, The Power of One and Gladiator
Benicio - February 3, 2012
The Rock?
Horselover Fat - February 3, 2012
Excellent
But this only means Gladiator Man is gone, right? Face the Pain hasn’t died yet, has it?
SSreporters - February 2, 2012
Face the Pain is sticking around.
Matthew Roth - February 3, 2012
Hahahahahahaha
So you get a kickass new intro but the bullshit song stays. Slow steps I guess.
SSreporters - February 3, 2012
Nope...this is literally just replacing the gladiator
everything else from the intro is staying
Matthew Roth - February 3, 2012
So we get a 60 second Hans Zimmer themed montage
Followed by the usual ‘fighter specific’ highlights to Face the Pain?
I’m cool with that.
Chris Groves - February 3, 2012
I don't mind the fighter specific highlights
But man Hans Zimmer then Face the Pain? That’s like putting cheap gas in a Ferrari.
xFenixKnightx - February 3, 2012
Man, did anyone ask him why that is staying?
I bet he listens to it in his car all the time when he drives..
BrandtShaft! - February 3, 2012
I like it
It’s kinda sorta grown on me over the years,
KGNLuc - February 3, 2012
Same here
Chris Groves - February 3, 2012
Are you for real?!!
Face the Pain is staying? What the….
xFenixKnightx - February 3, 2012
I might miss the old intro, that music got me fired up. But let’s see how this new one pans out. :-)
taptomyarmbar - February 3, 2012
I know I'll miss it
I feel like it was tradition
polevaultking - February 3, 2012
This card keeps getting better and better.
Robert Cowan - February 3, 2012
Not trying to be a stickler, but I am 'The movie guy'
Digital Domain is not James Cameron’s production company…at least it no longer is.
It was founded by him and Stan Winston(rest in peace) and Scott Ross.
In May of 06 it was purchased by another company…whose “principals then included Wyndcrest founder John Textor, director Michael Bay, former Microsoft executive Carl Stork, former NFL player and sports television commentator Dan Marino, and Jonathan Teaford”
Basically, most people simply say that Bay owns the company now.
Also, Hans f’cking Zimmer composing the score is f’cking HUGE! The Dark Knight, the Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, Inception, this guy is like this generations John Williams…he is almost the go-to guy for great movie scores.
Chris Groves - February 3, 2012
"Composed by Hans Zimmer" is a relative term though
His company does all sorts of soundtracks these days and they all get branded as “By Hans Zimmer”. For example “Crysis 2” also featured a “soundtrack by Hans Zimmer” and in the end there were three tracks done “by Hans Zimmer” and from what I heard the studio basically sent in their soundtrack, Zimmers company rearranged the music a bit and allowed it to be branded “by Hans Zimmer”. Obviously, they’re still doing great work there, but how much of Hans is in Hans Zimmer music these days varies greatly, I guess. ;)
KGNLuc - February 3, 2012
I think a lot of that happens with video games
I know when someone is credited as a composer for a feature film…usually the vast majority of it is them.
Chris Groves - February 3, 2012
imagine being the guy/girl who actually wrote that music
they get boned
polevaultking - February 3, 2012
I was hoping for Jeremy Soule personally.
DirtyML - February 3, 2012
The Thin Red Line was one of the best works he's ever done.
And also of note, Crimson Tide, and the themes for True Romance and Backdraft.
Ikuhisa Quinoa - February 3, 2012
The Thin Red Line was the shit.
pud333 - February 3, 2012 via mobile
Its not a real intro if it doesn’t have a Diaz flipping the double birds
jammin.. - February 3, 2012
This actually sounds really cool!
Glad they put some effort and money into it. Really looking forward to seeing it now.
Horselover Fat - February 3, 2012
No Frank Shamrock?
I’m disappointed they only have the Gracie/Ken Shamrock fight to represent the pre-Zuffa era. Frank Shamrock really deserves to be in there.
c5mjohn - February 3, 2012
Face the Pain
isn’t something I’d be cruising around town listening to, but it’s become the sound of the UFC over the years and gets me amped up everytime. Hoping they keep it for the main card montage.
