UFC light heavyweight contender Quinton "Rampage" Jackson returns to Japan on Saturday to face Ryan Bader at UFC 144. Rampage, a long-time fan favorite in the Land of the Rising Sun, did an interview with Fighter's Only and pulled no punches in his thoughts on the commentary of UFC announcer Joe Rogan.
I think would beat the sh-t out of Joe Rogan - as long as he don't get me to the ground, because his jiu jitsu is really good. I know he's got good jiu jitsu guy because he's so biased towards jiu jitsu guys. Every time a guy is a jiu jitsu fighter Rogan might as well be playing the rusty trombone like, ‘oh a jiu jitsu guy' [mimes bl0wj0b action].
I don't give a f--k man, I am sick of people putting their [opinions]... if everyone was a jiu jitsu fighter it would be a boring-ass sport. Everyone is not the same. Some people like to stand and bang some people like jiu jitsu. I don't knock people who like jiu jitsu. Sometimes its boring when they are wrestling but sometimes its boring when people are standing too.
Rampage also shares his thoughts on Bader, cold weather, fighting in Japan and much more.

The only criticism Rogan has ever thrown at Rampage is that he doesn’t kick or check leg kicks. I’ve never noticed a bias towards BJJ guys on his part.
mburtoni - February 20, 2012 via iPhone app
Maybe Rampage is just sick of that 10th planet lingo Joe uses all the time
I know I am.
menckenstein - February 20, 2012
Joe is very faithful to traditional BJJ vocab, unless the fighter is a known affiliate of 10th planet, like when KZ sub'd Garcia.
Snatchl - February 20, 2012
I wish the UFC kept transcripts from commentary
Because if you ctrl +f’d “mission control” you’d crash your word processor.
menckenstein - February 20, 2012
Maybe I'm just stupid, but I don't see how this is a big deal.
Like at all. I don’t care about the whole tradition BJJ vs 10th Planet debate, but the people who argue over names of positions sound like children.
Tim Bernier - February 20, 2012
My only complaint us “crack head control” doesn’t really belong in any commentary. Other than that, the terminology doesn’t bother me. Just that he dies have a habit of showing a bias towards fighters while he’s calling the action.
Chris Hall - February 20, 2012 via Android app
So what's the other name for the same position?
WheelieMonkey - February 20, 2012
crackhead control = mission control or high guard.
mission control is a bjj term. so im not sure where youre getting at, guy.
lukustra - February 21, 2012
Crackhead control is not the same as mission control
Neither of which are interchangeable with “high guard”.
So what would you have him call it?
WheelieMonkey - February 21, 2012
If you were watching boxing and the commentator (who is a shill for 10th planet boxing) called clinching "alphabet soup"
Would that not get annoying really fast?
menckenstein - February 20, 2012
Perfectly serviceable names exist and don't need to be replaced with something comparitively retarded
In other words, it’s like people burning history books and instead learning from the cast of Jersey Shore.
KJ Gould - February 20, 2012
Says the guy who rephrases everything in his own preferred terminology
WheelieMonkey - February 20, 2012
some things they do in 10th planet dont have traditional BJJ names.
hence why Rogan always uses 10th planet names when a 10th planet associate is fighting.
lukustra - February 21, 2012
People're grabbing that leg over the back more and more
Is he supposed to not talk about it?
WheelieMonkey - February 20, 2012
that's the 10th planet term though
Cunny - February 20, 2012
What's the "non-10th planet" term, then?
If it takes you more than ten seconds to come up with it, we already know the default term. Heck, name the one guy that was doin’ similar stuff before/concurrently with Bravo. hint: fpurzoev
WheelieMonkey - February 20, 2012
Nino Schembri
esquilinho - February 20, 2012 via Android app
Bingo
What did he call it?
WheelieMonkey - February 20, 2012
Isn't it just the rubber guard?
Cunny - February 21, 2012
Your suggestion is another 10th planet term?
No, it isn’t. “Rubber guard” is like any other guard, a series of positions and transitions, not one single arrangement of limbs and torsos. The specific position mission control is what pops into peoples’ heads when you say rubber guard and they don’t know any better, sure.
So, what non-10th planet term would you have Joe Rogan use to describe that position?
WheelieMonkey - February 21, 2012
I chose rubber guard because that's how the position is generally known externally
but I take your point
man i need to start training soon
Cunny - February 21, 2012
if by known affiliate ... you mean" learned the twister off of youtube "
Because that’s where zombie learned it. He had no bravo affiliation besides his youtube channel.
Rogan said Bj was “doing rubber-guard wrong” one time. Bj isn’t a tenth planet guy and is three times the black belt bravo is. Bj is a world champion Bravo tapped a world champ once. Bj could give two fucks how bravo works his inferior guard.
Rogan calling jits gets annoying. I hate 10th planet nomenclature.

I look at your comment and i think DOCHEBAG! Isn’t that a Bravo position name?Well thought out indeed.
the-gentle-way - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Agreed. He gets excited by sub attempts, and rubber guard, but he's just calling the action.
Not saying he isn’t biased for fighters, but I think their skill of BJJ is far down on the list of reasons why.
Snatchl - February 20, 2012
He's biased towards people who train under Eddie Bravo
YPG - February 20, 2012
Any time Rampage gets taken down Rogan makes a point of saying his jits isn't up to par.
Which is true and hardly makes him biased, but that’s probably what he’s mad about.
lowellthehammer - February 20, 2012
To be fair
Ramapge has only been subbed once iirc. His offensive bjj is none existent but defensively he is very good
JG87 - February 20, 2012

JG87 - February 20, 2012
No doubt
Have you ever seen the Shark Fights ppv where Bas teamed up with Don Frye?! I’ve never heard better commentary ever.
Buzzerbeat - February 20, 2012

Dana seriously needs to revamp the commentary team. At least give us Bas on fight night shows or TUF the ratings would go up for sure

Our Bovine Public - February 20, 2012
It's decent, getting worse though. He isn't a commentary god like some proclaim.
He needs to only be listened to in small doses because then you just get sick of him. I wouldn’t be able to handle him calling 20 events a year like Rogan does.
Tim Bernier - February 20, 2012
yeah I could probably handle him in smallish doses. He’s just way too over the top for my liking. Personally I still think Bellator commentators are the best in the business ATM

Sheesh forget the Joe Rogan part
1. He won’t go train at a better gym because it’s cold in Denver. If there’s a more symbolic statement for Rampage’s recent career, I don’t know what is.
2. Is it just me or has he started stuttering a whole lot more recently?
joker24 - February 20, 2012
The truth hurts
Coeman - February 20, 2012
If I was gonna make one complaint about Joe Rogan
It would be how his bias about certain fighters can make listening to the commentary really painful. He’ll concentrate on one fighter, whilst completely ignoring anything the other fighter does. Seems to be happening far more often these days too.
Machida vs Shogun 1 really sticks out in my mind, raving bout every kick Shogun landed whilst ignoring every punch landed by Machida.

That's way above Goldberg's ability
KJ Gould - February 20, 2012
Mike Goldberg once told Mauro Ranallo....
…that he was Joe Montana, laying it out there for Joe “Jerry Rice” Rogan.
I think it’s safe to say we’re not seeing any changes in the way these two call fights, ever.
Luke Nelson - February 20, 2012
I've said it before...
… and I’ll say it again. I’d pay $5 extra for a PPV channel with Goldberg’s mic muted.
loydb - February 20, 2012
Be careful where that goes. They might start getting really obnoxious celebrities for play-by-play, and charging exorbitant prices to mute them.

Joe's man crushes are getting out of control
I agree that we are hearing more and more “man crush” commentary from Joe. I’m pretty sure he follows twitter during the fights because ive called him out a few times lately and he seems to change direction, even mid fight. Condit v Diaz was the most recent, he started that fight w/ his head completely up Nick’s azz

i wish Rogan would start taking his job a little more serious and do a better job. His interveiwing is pathetic (same questions over and over) and his calling of the fights, is shottty at best. He says a lot of things like they are fact and he is way off.
Just my opinion and I loved the comment “8 ball, corner pocket”. That was freakin funny!

On my phone, so I’m having trouble finding it, but does anyone have a link to the old show Rogan used to have on UFC.com – when Rampage was the champ, Rogan went to train with him and tapped him with a guillotine. Also showed them hanging out on the back of (I think it was) a truck eating lunch. This was probably before the Griffin fight. Seems relevant now.
Tsubame - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Someone tapped a fighter in training?
I am shocked.discoandherpes - February 20, 2012
I’m interested in seeing the video again in light of the highly relevant topic at hand, not to display some kind of proof of Joe’s superiority. I doubt anyone in their right mind thinks Rogan could submit Rampage in a legitimate fight. There just seems to be a lot of dislike on Rampage’s end and the show I’m referencing had them hanging out, eating lunch and training together like old friends.
Tsubame - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Its time to book this fight!
I believe the only way this will be settled is, if they book the fight. So instead of Joe fighting Wesley Snipes, time to take on Rampage. Book it Joe Silva!
Kung Foo - February 20, 2012
What are the chances Rampage retires after this fight?
boscomma - February 20, 2012
Time to open up the BElitest floodgates of Rogan hate
I don’t get it. I’ve heard other commentary teams from Pride, Strikeforce, eliteXC, and some regionals on youtube. Rogan crushes them. Pride commentary was better? Really? Did you actually have the volume up?
I believe Rogan calls things how he sees them. Sometimes he’s only seeing one thing and doesn’t call the others, but the way “mma hardcores” get all weird about him defies logic. Dude is pretty good at what he does. Definitely not perfect, but he does a pretty good job. Better than Baas or anyone else I’ve heard.
Tacoknight - February 20, 2012
Agree +++
The only thing that makes me wince is when Joe screams : ‘’rubber guard’’ ‘’mission control’’. Like something awsome is about to happen. Rubber guard is a weak, low percentage move. We have tried it in the gym and it is easy to get out of and requires too much effort to keep applying it, if you are lucky enough to lock it in. IMO, that move would only be effective against a white belt.
Otherwise, Joe is Joe. He is also a huge fan of the sport so yes, he may show some bias at times.

I really dont understand why people dislike Mauro.
I think hes a great commentator. gets a little over excited sometimes but it keeps the audience paying attention. but he knows his mma and the various techniques. if it wasnt for Frank Shamrock’s (who is SUPER biased and openly admits it) braces and constant reading straight of the prompter while bobbing his head for no apperent reason and whatever the boxing crossdressers name is, Strikeforce would have very good commentary in Mauro and Militch.
lukustra - February 21, 2012

If you are gonna blast someone from that pair Goldberg is the one that’s gotta go. Ron Burgundy has better things to say.
DankNabbot - February 20, 2012

The fight announcers on Fuel were horrible, somehow worse than the Strikeforce team. All the Pride videos I’ve watched were mediocre; Bas will say something ridiculous, and the other guy makes a really bad simile. Even all the Showtine kickboxing and all the big PPV boxing events are a shot below the UFC team.
Goldie is silly and Rogan goes overboard, but there aren’t any better announcers I can think of.
Erasedhead - February 20, 2012

nobody is going to be perfect. Joe does a good job of explaining technique to people who would otherwise have no clue as to what was happening. I can’t even say how many times he basically predicted what was going to happen on accident while he was explaining technique.

Joe Rogan can be extremely biased and bad sometimes
Yelling that Condit needed a stoppage in the Rory Mac fight when he was on his way to winning a split decision, his dismissal of Frankie Edgar beating up Spencer Fisher, him and Goldberg so convinced that GSP was going to truck Serra they didn’t even notice that Serra had him on the ropes, amongst other things.
That said, it isn’t as bad as his commentary during the Phan vs. Garcia fight. You would think that Garcia was winning and not being dominated in the stand up outside of about a minute of the third round.
When Rogan is on he is on, but when he is bad he can be pretty terrible. It drives my dad crazy when he calls a move “new” or “unorthodox” when he has been training for years and has seen said technique in other martial arts.
discoandherpes - February 20, 2012
In his defense, at least in the Rory / condit fight, a lot of people had Rory up twp rounds going in to the 3rd.
Chris Hall - February 20, 2012 via Android app
Except the judges
And rightfully so. Rory did jack shit with those takedowns in the first except get punched and elbowed in the face.
discoandherpes - February 20, 2012
Right, I’m just saying it wasn’t unreasonable foe him to say he thought condit was behind.
Chris Hall - February 20, 2012 via Android app
At that point he is saying something that is straight up wrong
He is inserting something very subjective into his commentary that is wrong, instead of taking a bit more of a conservative approach. Instead of saying “I think Condit is down two, he might need a finish” his tone was “What is Condit doing? He needs a finish here”. This would normally be okay, but assuming Rory won a close first round when he didn’t informs his (wrong) commentary.
That’s only one example, but he has had some terrible nights on commentary (truly some of the worst commentary) and it’s only made worst that every tapout wearing douche nozzle takes Rogan’s word as gospel.
discoandherpes - February 20, 2012
I agree he has some awful fights, namely phan / Garcia 2. I just don’t thinks that’s the worst by far. But he may have been more extreme than I’m remembering.
Chris Hall - February 20, 2012 via Android app
Paraphrasing: Leonard Garcia has so much power it's a curse
Also saying that if you don’t like Garcia you don’t like MMA is pretty awful. This is a guy who should be on a nine fight losing streak and has very little technique. there is nothing wrong with not wanting to see this guy in the UFC. He’s a worst version of Dan Hardy.
discoandherpes - February 20, 2012
That ws bad, I usually don't mind Rogan but he was awful in that fight.
Sweet Scientist - February 20, 2012
Not to mention that compared to people looking at the big screen,
They don’t have an ideal viewpoint, which I think at times can lead to some bad commentating in itself. Which is my same argument about the judges. Ringside isn’t the best way to call it, sometimes.
DankNabbot - February 20, 2012
Via MMA Junkie.
Sugel Mendoza - February 20, 2012
Yeah, Rory was going to at least get a draw in that fight, if not win. I don’t know why people keep insisting Condit would’ve won that decision. Your quote confirms that the judges had it for Rory.

Joe Rogan's strength is also his weakness.
His fandom really shines through and gets people excited, but someone so emotionally tied to the sport is bound to develop favoritism.
I_Mad - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I don’t think his strength is his fandom. In my opinion its his BJJ knowledge. He is able to explain what a fighter is doing and what he should be doing in every situation on the ground. That is incredibly useful for new fans or fans who dont fully understand the groung game
Our Bovine Public - February 20, 2012
And thats why Joe is great...
Top notch BJJ knowledge and authentic enthusiasm that always delivers, even if he is a bit bias. Who isn’t, besides that talking robot Goldberg?
I_Mad - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I think a huge part of the UFC’s success is Rogan, I don’t buy PPV if he’s not commentating, his personal touch is what makes the UFC the UFC. I’m not even joking, something is missing when I’m watching MMA and I don’t hear his voice, i will watch but I’m not willing to spend 60$, Rogan is part of the UFC experience.

but at the same time, really feels different without Rogan to me.
Violent Newt - February 20, 2012
The main criticism I have of Rogan’s commentary is that the guy doesn’t explain the striking game very well. He’s constantly screaming “LOOK AT HIS FOOTWORK!” without explaining what exactly constitutes good footwork. It wasn’t until I read a lot of BE’s judo chop articles and took some muay Thai/kickboxing classes that I understood the basics of striking.
On a similar note, I wish the UFC’s production crew would have more full body shots show you can see the fighters’ feet while they’re fighting. It’s so hard to understand why a fighter’s standup skills worked without looking at their entire body.

He seems awfully tough when he’s picking on announcers and reporters like Aerial and Joe. Maybe he should stick to actual fighters instead of calling people out for doing their job. I’m going to make a prediction that if he loses this fight he will retire on Japanese soil. I for won’t lose any sleep over it.

The Joe Rogan Experience is the shit
Not that it has anything to do with this, but I love hearing him go on epic rants about society and psychedelics.

His tongue is obviously under the wrong cheek
If Rampage were really sucking a dick coming from a diagonal angle to his left, the resulting impact of the schlong would be on Quinton’s LEFT CHEEK, not his right cheek. Ha HA!

He forgot to cup the balls ...

Steve4192 - February 21, 2012
he put far too much effort into guzzling that phantom cock
and how did he do the whole thing with a straight face

I think the best color guy is Frank Mir. His work on WEC was so good. He was able to call moves 3 or 4 steps ahead because he knew what guys were going for. I know he is till active but I would rather listen to him than anyone.
Rogan has an orgasm anytime someone throws a high kick regardless if it is close or not.

Never gets old
I laugh a little every time i hear Rampage say “wrasstle”
CrazyHandsCam - February 20, 2012
pretty funny
i think Joe does a great job getting viewers interested at times and sometimes he tries too hard to sell someone on the ground “looking for a submission”
Rampage is pretty childish but the bj part was hilarious

Joe talks about this on his #187 podcast at about minute 37
