UFC president Dana White is in full PRIDE mode for UFC 144 in Japan this Saturday.
Even though UFC president Dana White said this Saturday's UFC 144 wouldn't harken back to the days of PRIDE, that didn't stop him from wearing a PRIDE 1 shirt to kick off his first video blog of fight week, covering all the backstage stuff from UFC 143.
Some of the highlights in the nine minute clip include:
White calling Matt Riddle vs. Henry Martinez the biggest mismatch in UFC history and Riddle being a bit excited after the victory.
Mike Pierce shrugging off the severity of a deep cut on top of his head.
Roy Nelson saying he won at least two rounds over and over and over again. He was joking, I think. Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta had a good chuckle about it anyway.
The in-cage reaction when Nick Diaz lost and Diaz backstage explaining how he saw the fight going down. "I'm not going to no press conference," was one notable quote. This was the most I've seen Diaz talking open and honestly, possibly ever.
I thought Martinez won. He won the 1st and the 2nd, IMO. The only good offense Riddle had in the 2nd was that flurry at the end, and apparently that won him the fight in the eyes of the judges. Stupid.
The only thing Riddle landed was a few good body kicks. I think Martinez could’ve won if he had had enough time to prepare and get in good shape, regardless of the size difference.
…I figured pud333 got this one right, and Roy was joking around at the expense of Diaz but if he was talking about it when he was getting looked at by the doctor….
Could be that Roy didn’t think Werdum’s shots did much damage. Or, it could be that they did so much damage that he forgot the parts of the fight that Fabricio was blasting his face with knees.
i think he probably did forget chunks of the fight, it’s not uncommon to forget a lot in a fight even if you don’t take a lot of damage, at least until you watch the tape.
Even Caceres wasn’t sure he’d landed low 2x on Figueroa, and he wasn’t getting blasted like Nelson.
They may be professional fighters, but that still doesn’t make them immune to the fight or fight reactions and how that messes with your brain and instincts.
i dont know i have read it in another article that Caceres got knocked so hard that in fact he didnt even remember the rest of the fight.. although i think he definitely knew about the first one he made..
Yeah, I definitely think he was serious. It wouldn’t be the first time he’s a sore loser. I can’t really fault a guy for thinking it right after a fight though, maybe he changed his mind after he watched the tape.
Yup, and even when it's not that close from the fighter it's understandable.
To mentally stay in a fight you’re losing you’ve got to cling to the sucess you have. That can easily make you remember that at most of the fight when it ends. I don’t think you can really blame for thinking he won a fight that went to decision right after it ends.
Weird seeing Nick Diaz talk in a coherent manner. He even looks directly at the camera a few times and ignores it. I was expecting him to grab the camera and destroy it once they were backstage. Makes me wonder whether the rambling Nick we usually get in interviews is more of an act than I thought.
I think it’s more a case of anxiety than being a fraud. Diaz isn’t really paying much attention to the fact that there’s a camera around, which could attribute to his more relaxed nature. I sincerely doubt the Nick Diaz when the cameras are turned to him, is the game guy walking around the gym on a daily basis. I don’t think he’s giving the finger to a blue belt during open mat time. Yet, I think when he’s got the lights on him that anxiety kicks in, and he feels the need to defend himself. It’s why he’s so aggressive and why he struggles to express himself properly.
These are my favorite bits of content the UFC puts out
The post-fight stuff really humanizes and puts a reality check on everything.
We get desensitized to what’s happening because we watch so many fights, but these guys really take a beating to entertain us. Nearly every fighter in the piece makes some sort of “that happened?” type comment regarding something that happened in their fight. Some of that I’m sure can be chalked up to getting lost in the action, but some of that is getting your head punched until it stops thinking.
Dana's scratch to the back of his head after the Diaz/Condit decision was announced
I know that scratch. I do it when I am slightly ticked-off or annoyed in an environment that requires restraint. I don’t think the decision went the way he wanted it to ;)
Lots of “I could’ve done more if I’d felt like it” kinda talk from Diaz. My read. He knew he lost and was putting up some quick psychological barriers to deflect. Everyone does it, but it was pretty blatant here. He needs to get away from all the yes men around him.
always good footage from Dana
insightful stuff

I despise Matt Riddle
Damon O. - February 21, 2012
Something just ain't right with that boy.
pud333 - February 21, 2012
I love Matt Riddle
Luke Nelson - February 21, 2012
Matt Riddle is like Belladonna
Fun to watch him get pounded by a huge dude on the computer in my room, but if that’s not happening, I’m not really interested.
Not Hauser - February 21, 2012 via mobile
Lucky she's in porn
Because I’m pretty sure most other men’s members could fit between that giant gap in between her teeth
discoandherpes - February 21, 2012
Me too
Horselover Fat - February 21, 2012
Despise him, that is
Horselover Fat - February 21, 2012
he's the funniest in-cage fighter in the UFC tho
The Lethal Haze - February 21, 2012
I despise him as well.
But I loved watching him get beat up by someone 20 pounds lighter than him.
LemonSqueeze - February 21, 2012
Did he say Benson Henderson?
schm1583 - February 21, 2012
Yes.
That is his name.
YPG - February 21, 2012
He hates being called Ben.
LemonSqueeze - February 21, 2012
Wow, where have I been, I thought it was just Ben. Dont I look stupid.
schm1583 - February 21, 2012
Then I screw up the reply. I am done
schm1583 - February 21, 2012
Holy cray Riddle is bigger then that dude.
J_Maddux - February 21, 2012
and he still managed to get his ass whooped for a good portion of the fight.
His standup is very not good.
POW - February 21, 2012 via mobile
I thought Martinez won. He won the 1st and the 2nd, IMO. The only good offense Riddle had in the 2nd was that flurry at the end, and apparently that won him the fight in the eyes of the judges. Stupid.
Jeffrey McCrum - February 21, 2012
I thought Martinez won the second as well.
The only thing Riddle landed was a few good body kicks. I think Martinez could’ve won if he had had enough time to prepare and get in good shape, regardless of the size difference.
LemonSqueeze - February 21, 2012
LOL at Roy thinking he won two rounds
Patrick Wyman - February 21, 2012
Honestly thought he was joking. But he seems serious.
Sweet Scientist - February 21, 2012
So did I, the first time
But when he was talking to Diaz later he seemed like he meant it. Hard to judge what’s happening when you’re actually fighting, I guess.
Patrick Wyman - February 21, 2012
Especially when half of your brains have just been kneed out through your nose.
POW - February 21, 2012
I'm pretty sure Roy wasn't serious.
He seemed to be riffing off Diaz and going on and on about winning those last two wounds in his typical deadpan way.
pud333 - February 21, 2012
He said that when the Dr. was checking him out too.
Which was either before or during the Diaz/Condit fight.
Mjub - February 21, 2012
Interesting...
…I figured pud333 got this one right, and Roy was joking around at the expense of Diaz but if he was talking about it when he was getting looked at by the doctor….
Luke Nelson - February 21, 2012
Maybe his toughness is a factor.
Could be that Roy didn’t think Werdum’s shots did much damage. Or, it could be that they did so much damage that he forgot the parts of the fight that Fabricio was blasting his face with knees.
LemonSqueeze - February 21, 2012
Yeah, but unless your name is Willie Pep
You gotta be landing shots to win rounds. Whether Fabricio’s shots were hurting or not is irrelevant cos Roy wasn’t doing much in rounds 2 or 3.
VenusBlue - February 21, 2012
this is actually pretty acurate
i think he probably did forget chunks of the fight, it’s not uncommon to forget a lot in a fight even if you don’t take a lot of damage, at least until you watch the tape.
Iwasfn47 - February 21, 2012
Seems that way
Even Caceres wasn’t sure he’d landed low 2x on Figueroa, and he wasn’t getting blasted like Nelson.
They may be professional fighters, but that still doesn’t make them immune to the fight or fight reactions and how that messes with your brain and instincts.
SteveevaD - February 21, 2012 via mobile
True
i dont know i have read it in another article that Caceres got knocked so hard that in fact he didnt even remember the rest of the fight.. although i think he definitely knew about the first one he made..
szanpan - February 22, 2012
Still got blasted pretty good with that high kick. Not surprised he forgot a bit about the fight.
Sweet Scientist - February 22, 2012
Yeah he was definitely knocked out and woke up upon contact with the ground.
Luke Nelson - February 22, 2012
Sorry.
You’re right. He did say he thought he won two rounds when he was with the doctor. Maybe he took one too many shots to the head…
pud333 - February 21, 2012
Yes
like with Krysztof, many fighters are not really aware of the things right after the fight..
szanpan - February 22, 2012
this
John Danaher's Hair - February 21, 2012
Umm Roy.... You lost buddy. There is no way in hell you won that fight.
J_Maddux - February 21, 2012
I would say the same thing to Nick
OmoPlata - February 21, 2012
Only guy not complaining about a decision was the guy that got screwed: Mike Pierce.
Richard Wade - February 21, 2012
Uh, Pierce has been complaining.
Tim Burke - February 21, 2012
Blah, thought you meant in general, not in the blog. Ignore me.
Tim Burke - February 21, 2012
I should have specified.
Richard Wade - February 21, 2012
Did Roy even win any rounds? I don’t remember that much but all I remember is that huge whoopin Werdum gave him.
MMA214 - February 21, 2012 via mobile
I'm pretty sure Roy wasn't joking
But he did just head his brain pounded on for 15 straight minutes, so I’m sure he wasn’t thinking too clearly.
Not Hauser - February 21, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, I definitely think he was serious. It wouldn’t be the first time he’s a sore loser. I can’t really fault a guy for thinking it right after a fight though, maybe he changed his mind after he watched the tape.
Horselover Fat - February 21, 2012
I've changed my opinion on fights after watching them a second time...
I can imagine it’s pretty easy in the heat of the moment to feel that things were going a little more in your favour then they actually were.
I don’t begrudge anyone a little frustration after a close fight.
Bloody L - February 21, 2012
Yeah, agreed.
Horselover Fat - February 21, 2012
Yup, and even when it's not that close from the fighter it's understandable.

Sweet Scientist - February 21, 2012
im really hoping the ufc gives riddle a WELTERWEIGHT between 20-25 on the consensus rankings
so that dana can fire him
mattsterguy - February 21, 2012
meh
as much as I don’t care all that much for Riddle, he’s not in danger of getting cut anytime soon.
Cory Braiterman - February 21, 2012
Agreed. Riddle is one of those people who have no problem having their face bashed in and I think that carries a lot of weight.
Lucas2 - February 21, 2012
Riddle Martinez was a bigger mismatch than Couture Toney?
GTFO with that shit. At least Martinez is an actual mixed martial artist.
The Lethal Haze - February 21, 2012
Most fights Matt Riddle is in are mismatches.
Just not in his favor.
LemonSqueeze - February 21, 2012
he was exaggerating
Would you like him to list all fights that rank above it?
halitosis - February 21, 2012 via mobile
I believe he meant it was a size mismatch.
Richard Wade - February 21, 2012
Weird seeing Nick Diaz talk in a coherent manner. He even looks directly at the camera a few times and ignores it. I was expecting him to grab the camera and destroy it once they were backstage. Makes me wonder whether the rambling Nick we usually get in interviews is more of an act than I thought.

SEVEN fight main card!? Is this real life?
T.C. Engel - February 21, 2012
I think Roy Nelson needs a CAT scan - they do that after each fight right?
60steiners - February 21, 2012
It always freaks me out a bit to hear a fighter saying they don’t remember large portions of a fight like Caceres did.
Brad Ackerson - February 21, 2012
Matt Riddle seems like he's a really nice guy.
Also, it’s very possible that Caceres didn’t remember the first nutshot after getting rocked by that headkick.
Also Nick’s corner is terrible. It’s hard to blame Diaz for not making adjustments when his corner is making it out like he’s winning every round.
Also Nelson thought he won that fight? He must have gotten hit harder than I thought.
discoandherpes - February 21, 2012
Love the picture
Dana White looking like a D bag (no stretch), while wearing a Pride 1 shirt.
But whats the kicker, Muhammad Ali sitting in his [player cadillac right behind Dana.
TheBirdsDen - February 21, 2012
Lorenzo's face when Roy is saying he won is priceless.
“Ummm…are you talking about the fight a few minutes ago where you got the donkey shit beat out of you for three rounds, Roy?”

Material541 - February 21, 2012

i saw that and thought the same thing.
Iwasfn47 - February 21, 2012
good catch
didn’t see that the first time but pretty damn sure you’re spot on
DSAhawker - February 22, 2012
“First time I’ve ever been cut, son of a bitch!”
Riddle looking huge in that scene.
Elitex10x - February 22, 2012
To be fair
He did get blasted pretty hard at the end of the first.
Scott Whitaker - February 22, 2012
Oops...
Didn’t mean to get the Chris Cope quote too. I was talking about Caceres.
Scott Whitaker - February 22, 2012
I would have chased him down but I was winning?

Agreed.
Sounded like a bit of coulda/woulda by Diaz. Sorry. You had your chance during the fight, Nick.
sonzai - February 22, 2012
His corner told him he was winning
So he probably thought he was winning.
discoandherpes - February 22, 2012

Nick Diaz best welterweight in the world
209..STOCKTON..209 - February 22, 2012
