Carlos Condit used a solid, measured gameplan to capture the UFC interim welterweight title by winning a unanimous decision over Nick Diaz in the main event of UFC 143. Condit ignored all of the mind games Diaz tried to employ in the fight, and landed a ton of damaging kicks while staying away from situations where Diaz could truly open up on him. The scores were 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 for Condit. He now has a date with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre when he recovers from his injury. Diaz claimed he was going to retire in his post-fight interview.
Diaz took the center of the cage immediately, but it was Condit firing first with kicks. Diaz continued to walk down Condit and landed a couple of nice shots, while Condit responded with leg kicks. Diaz threw some kicks of his own, and started to drop his hands and talk to Condit. Diaz dug to the body with a big shot, but Condit again responded with a leg kick. Condit tried a couple of spinning elbows without success. Diaz closed out the first round by clowning a bit, but not landing anything.
Condit opened the second with a variety of flashy strikes, but nothing landed. Condit continued to work the legs, and he actually landed a spinning backfist. Diaz actually dropped his hands and begged Condit to him him, then open-hand slapped him when he didn't. Diaz talked some trash, but didn't land much until a good right connected halfway through the round. Condit landed a body shot, and Diaz clowned some more. Finally Diaz landed a solid combination, but Condit stayed calm and landed more kicks. Diaz stared Condit down to close out another close round.
The third saw more of the same as the first two rounds. Solid kicking game from Condit, and Diaz continually coming forward with solid combinations. Condit did a good job of circling away so he wouldn't get cornered and be prone to a Diaz flurry. Diaz landed a very big left hand with a minute to go, but it had no effect on Condit. Diaz upped the pace late, but ate a lot of leg kicks over the course of five minutes.
Diaz looked visibly frusrated at Condit's gameplan early in the fourth, but couldn't do much to keep Condit in front of him. Diaz dropped down for a single two minutes in, but Condit shrugged it off and landed a strike as he escaped. Condit started to land a lot more in he latter half of the round with nice combinations. Condit bloodied up Nick's eye with a jab late in the round.
Diaz continued to chase Condit around the cage in the fifth and opened up his own kicking game a bit more. The pace slowed ever so slightly, and less strikes were being landed by both for the first half. Condit landed a big head kick that didn't face Nick at all. Finally Nick clinched up with Carlos, but Condit escaped again and went back to attacking the legs. Diaz managed to land a nice right, but Condit responded with a good knee. Diaz managed to get Condit's back with 75 seconds to go and secured back mount. After locking up a body triangle, he tried valiantly to sink in a choke but Condit fought him off. The round and the fight ended in a big scramble, but the fighters hugged after the final horn.
Diaz is a former Strikeforce welterweight champion that expected to take on Georges St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight title here, but an injury to GSP gave Condit the spot and the bout was for an interim title. Condit, a former WEC welterweight champion, was on a four-fight winning streak entering the bout, with the last two wins coming by brutal knockout.

Dear Nick
Cory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
Somebody needs to put up the one with all the trolls dancing. I remember a person posting it after Fitch got KO’d
savik - February 5, 2012
Hey man!
You don’t call JCVD a troll, he’s a great man!!
ElliotMatheny - February 5, 2012
just saw Nick leave the event in the back
F.U.B.A.R - February 5, 2012
I enjoy how he circles to the left just like Condit was doing
jthin - February 5, 2012
wow
wHat a sore loser
Bloodsport - February 5, 2012 via mobile
i dont know about thrilling
i can see how condit won but was not in his usual manner, been a while since i seen a fighter win by backing up all fight
Kronic - February 5, 2012
Its hard to win whilemoving backwards
That said, did enough to win two rounds, IMO.
I was surprised to hear he won the 1st or 2nd, only because he was so tentative and Diaz was controlling the fight.
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
I can't believe Brent, who I usually agree with
and a lot of people here, who I also usually agree with, scored either of the first two, much less both of them, for Condit. I need to watch them again, because they were clear, clear Diaz rounds for me. Not all strikes are created equal, and countering a hard shot to the head that lands flush with a partially checked leg kick is not an equal exchange, not even close.
Dave Strummer - February 5, 2012
I scored the first for Condit and the second for Diaz.
castleeb - February 5, 2012
Brent also picked Condit.
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
Wasn't what I
Expected but I do think Condit won.
RiZE - February 5, 2012
Amazing display of counter-punching by Condit. He was beating Diaz to the punch (and kick) every time.
andrew861 - February 5, 2012
I am smiling from ear to ear right now.
MicahtheCynic - February 5, 2012
bad decision.
backpedaling and leg kicks. yawn.
seminole_swami - February 5, 2012
you obviously didn't watch the fight
Earl Montclair - February 5, 2012
i watched the whole fight.
backpedaling is not entertaining. I found the whole fight frustrating to watch. I almost stopped watching it during the 4th.
seminole_swami - February 5, 2012
I imagine most Diaz fans found it frustrating that their favorite fighter couldn’t back up his claims of being the number one welterweight in the world.
It wasn’t true. It was never damn true.
MicahtheCynic - February 5, 2012
Eh
I’m a huge fan but it is what it is. Carlos won a well fought decision.
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
If that's how Condit is going to fight then I am just THRILLED to see what he has in store for us next.
His incorporation of jogging into MMA was quite innovative.
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
Do you guys making fun of Condits back-pedaling strategy also make fun of Jon Jones for doing it too? Or are you just butt hurt? It’s called movement and it’s been a key part of fighting since the dawn of time.
MaximumWatermelon - February 5, 2012
yea cuz jones won soo many decisions runnig backwards hahahaha
NW Okie - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Cracks me up that the level headed logical response is the only one not green’d
Day Man - February 5, 2012
I'm not even a diaz fan.
I just dont enjoy condits game plan. I dont like Cruz either for much the same reason. If you enjoy watching Kalib Starnes fight, more power to you.
seminole_swami - February 5, 2012
Kalib ran.
Condit countered like a bawss. Huge difference.
kreally - February 5, 2012
Scoring is not based upon enjoyment.
garik16 - February 5, 2012
Or Octagon Control
according to the score cards tonight.
Ionnes - February 5, 2012
"Cage control" is a 2- way street.
Sure, Diaz was able to take the center of the octagon, but Condit was also able to move around him with ease the entire time. If you don’t think Carlos used the fighting space masterfully, you are a blind fool.
ElliotMatheny - February 5, 2012
I think you define control
as being able to be where you want to be, and your opponent where you want him to be. Carlos was not where Nick wanted him to be, and he was pretty much always where he wanted to be.
DankNabbot - February 5, 2012
Exactly.
Nick backed Condit against the fence a few times, and I give him credit for that. I saw “Cage Control” as largely neutral in this fight (even though ultimately, I think it’s a stupid metric.
ElliotMatheny - February 5, 2012
Pick a different sport.
krste - February 5, 2012
condit put some miles on that bike
kellly - February 5, 2012
you continue to fail to grasp what makes people Nick Diaz fans
it’s not a belief that he’s the best in the world. It’s a love of his attitude and capacity for violence.
My enjoyment of him is undiminished. If he had gotten the decision, GSP would have surely beat him anyway, so it’s really probably a wash.
When and if he chooses to fight again, or box, or do full contact triathlons over on G4 or whatever, I’ll look forward to watching him again with the same anticipation.
And I should probably thank him and Condit for saving me the PPV money I won’t have to spend watching the 170 unification fight.
Dave Strummer - February 5, 2012
Backpedaling?
Maybe i misunderstand what back-pedalling is, to me that means that are being forced back by strikes either kicks punches knees, elbows, moving to put yourself in position so you have the upper hand is not back-pedalling to me
kieranski - February 5, 2012
He did back pedal
and literally turned his back and ran at times.
Not saying he didn’t land strikes.
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
If anything it was frontpedalling
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
Well
he was actually run away with his back turned at times… thats week
Jason Robillard - February 5, 2012
Right, so you're just frustrated that Condit didn't stand in front of Diaz like every other fighter he's ever faced. Got it.
James Brady - February 5, 2012
its not even standing and trading.
there was very very little engagement. It was leg kicks, backpedaling, and running around the cage. Condit ran, diaz pressed.
seminole_swami - February 5, 2012
Very little engagement? Just because it’s not Diaz on Diaz hot flurry action doesn’t mean there’s very little engagement.
James Brady - February 5, 2012
there was very little engagement
Take off your condit glasses and watch the fight objectively.
seminole_swami - February 5, 2012
I can honestly say 100% I am indomitable in my ability to not give an atom's worth of fuck for Carlos Condit.
I don’t think I’ve typed his name before today. There’s no Condit glasses.
James Brady - February 5, 2012
Literally, I'm sure.
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
I am starting to get pissed
Look, Diaz could have won that fight easily. If he got that takedown about a minute and a half earlier, or if he showed a sense of fucking urgency, he had that fight. And if he was a little bit fucking smarter, he would have realized that his gameplan wasn’t gettting the results he wanted much earlier, and changed levels. I also love that he doesn’t get that, I get why we love Nick. But I am frustrated because in the minute he goes to the ground he’s in fantastic position and clearly dominant on the ground. He had back control with a lock on and he didn’’t finish it. He didn’t because he thought he was winning, so he coasted a bit. He himself said so. That fight was too close for him to be sure of winning, and he needs to learn from this. And he should have opened 5 with that takedown, and he would have won.
DankNabbot - February 5, 2012
True that
It’s fucking ridiculous that people would think he should just stand there and let Nick beat up on him. His movement, angles, and combinations at range were what won him the fight.
eyeIess - February 5, 2012
Hopefully some of Nick Diaz’s fans retire with him. Condit put on a clinic and you should appreciate that. Oh, and you missed the headkicks, elbows, and beautiful combinations from Condit as well.
andrew861 - February 5, 2012
yes please
Cory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
Condit was the better man.
And he would be a solid favorite in a re-match.
Charlie Custer - February 5, 2012
yes the running and back pedaling looked funny
but he was very effective and landed some solid shots. You see that head kick?
Frank Lee - February 5, 2012
*headkicks
andrew861 - February 5, 2012
Yea that was a good one
There were some good counters, but overall, the fight was boring. Would you rewatch it? If I could go tell myself not to watch it, I would.
seminole_swami - February 5, 2012
Yes I would.
Frank Lee - February 5, 2012
Not many times do you see a game plan executed 100% correctly
Frank Lee - February 5, 2012
If you love watching Jackson fighters, my hat's off to you
I wish I had your patience.
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
Yeah those Jackson fighters...
Who would ever enjoy watching Condit, Cerrone, Jones, etc. They’re simply bad and they should feel bad.
Sean__H - February 5, 2012
Notable by omission: GSP
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
I consider him Tristar at this point. That is where he spends the vast majority of his time.
But I do love watching GSP fight for what it’s worth.
Sean__H - February 5, 2012
Well I'm glad you can enjoy that sort of wrestling style.
Going back to Condit, if this is how he’s going to fight from now on, then count me out.
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
First of all the fight wasn't bad, imo.
Second, there is no reason to assume that this will be his style from here on out. He was backing up and countering because Diaz goes forwards throwing far more intensely than anyone else. Usually Condit is the aggressor but this fight necessitated a different strategy. Condit has somewhere around a 93% finishing rate which is insanely high. If you’re even questioning if you will watch his next fight than please silently leave because the real fans are trying to enjoy a good fight.
Sean__H - February 5, 2012
Definitely would watch again
Carlos didn’t lose his mind in a frenzy like Nick’s usual opponents do. He worked just as hard as Nick to be very active over 25 minutes.
eyeIess - February 5, 2012
Bro, even Cecil Peoples acknowledged that Condit's low kicks were effective.
ElliotMatheny - February 5, 2012
Absolute brilliance from Condit
Earl Montclair - February 5, 2012
Seriously. To say otherwise is just ignorant.
Dino756 - February 5, 2012
really? brilliance?
anderson against forrest was brilliance. this was a close fight that carlos seemingly came into with point fighting on his mind. im not trying to knock him by saying that. I think he edged it out (barely) and he is one of my favorite fighters but it just seemed really clear that he trained to nullify diaz’s attack more so than do heavy damage of his own, and there is nothing wrong with that. im just a little dissapointed by the fight and how condit backpedalled so much.
bert44 - February 5, 2012
maybe that is because Diaz is a better fighter...
…compared to Condit, than Forrest was compared to Anderson?
burakkuburain - February 5, 2012
good point.
people didnt reaLLY feel that way at the time though. believe it or not i was lookingat an old thread from this site from when silva vs james irvin was announced and about half the people commenting thought irvin would be able to ko Anderson.
bert44 - February 5, 2012
how was anderson vs forrest brilliance?
Anderson=fast Forrest = slow. Anderson didn’t need a strategy other than"beat the shit out of this slow-ass fool!"
DankNabbot - February 5, 2012
Condit looked ok and did well avoiding Diaz's strengths. He fought a good fight.
But that’s far from what I would call brilliance.
pdl - February 5, 2012
it's brilliant if you hate Nick Diaz
Otherwise it was pretty underwhelming. Good game plan I guess, but Condit isn’t Floyd Mayweather, and watching him try to impersonate him isn’t all that edifying.
Dave Strummer - February 5, 2012
I don't hate Nick Diaz-
in fact, I respect him so much, that when someone completely negates his aggressive, swarm- punching style, and hits him with all 8 points, I consider that a hell of a performance.
ElliotMatheny - February 5, 2012
I don't get why you aren't pissed at Diaz
Not understanding what fight he was actually in. Because he could have easily won that fight if he went to the ground sooner, if he realized he needed another tactic. In the short time they were on the ground it was obvious that Nick was far above him skill-wise, and if he showed some urgency he had that choke too. I’m pissed he didn’t change levels sooner and get sub of the night.
DankNabbot - February 5, 2012
I’m not really mad at anyone. Going into this fight, I would have told you that Condit and Diaz were probably my two favorite 170 pounders in the UFC.
I don’t think that what Condit did was as good a strategy as people are making it out to be. You usually don’t win an MMA fight going backwards. You usually don’t win an MMA fight landing leg kicks (unless you buckle your opponent, which Condit didn’t). You usually lose an MMA fight if you’re getting your head snapped back by punches, and you aren’t doing the same to your opponent.
I was honestly a little stunned by the judging. I can see an argument for giving the last three rounds to Condit (it’s not an argument I agree with), but the number of people and judges, and folks here, who gave Condit 1 and or 2 just amazes me. I feel like we were watching different fights.
Ultimately, I was looking forward to this fight more than any fight since Belfort-Silva or Diaz-Daley, and unlike those fights, it really didn’t live up to my lofty expectations.
Dave Strummer - February 5, 2012
Giving Condit #2 is crazy, agreed, but Fightmetric has Condit winning #1 somthing like 68-56 (close, but a Condit win).
Does it really ‘amaze’ you when someone gives Condit round #1? Maybe you just think that Diaz took a really close one.
jebmak - February 5, 2012
I just don't see the strikes in #1 as equivocal
leg kicks are like body shots. You put them in the bank for later, but you don’t necessarily expect them to score huge points. In both 1 and 2, Nick landed barrages that clearly hurt Condit, and Condit didn’t do the same in return. When I’m scoring a fight, I’m looking at the quality of strikes, not the quantity, and I just thought Nick had the more meaningful offense.
Dave Strummer - February 5, 2012
Fair enough.
jebmak - February 5, 2012
Was it as entertaining as we thought it would be? No
Was it effective? Yes
IRodC - February 5, 2012
effective and brilliant aren't synonyms.
Dave Strummer - February 5, 2012
Following a gameplan
Not getting suckered into a brawl by Nick Diaz taunting. It’s pretty brilliant since nobody has done it before.
IRodC - February 5, 2012
not getting suckered into a brawl is not "brilliant"
his kicks were really really good, his gameplan was good albeit boring, but brilliant? i dunno it just seemed like a normal kinda performance to me, werdum put on a more brilliant fight than he did. people (me being one of them) are over reacting to this fight, they are either pissed that condit won or thrilled that diaz lost, i dont see the brilliance though. i see a good gameplan from a good fighter
bert44 - February 5, 2012
Think of it like this
I say brilliant because nobody was able to pull of a gameplan like this against Diaz. Condit could and did it really well. I say brilliant because nobody else was able to do it.
IRodC - February 5, 2012
It's brilliant because
a) no one’s done it before,
b) it required impeccable cardio and self-control, and
c) if Condit ever messed up once and lost his cool, or got trapped, or tired himself out, he would have been dunzo. He had to stick flawlessly to his plan in the heat of the moment, in the face of taunts.
James Kimbell - February 5, 2012
Polishing a turd
Doesn’t make it any less shitty.
Ionnes - February 5, 2012
Ha!
Rolandando - February 5, 2012
GSP is going to wreck Mr. Condit.
Tim Bernier - February 5, 2012
I sense a wrestlefucking upcoming
Cory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
I think it will be a scramble fest.
No matter the outcome, Condit will make Georges have to FIGHT. I actually think that Diaz is a harder style matchup for GSP.
ElliotMatheny - February 5, 2012
well yeah
Earl Montclair - February 5, 2012
After watching tonight, it didn't matter who won, because neither man had anything that could even remotely threaten GSP.
pud333 - February 5, 2012
Condit has a chance
Especially with GSP’s injury. But not much
sitnam90 - February 5, 2012 via mobile
stupid statement
diaz and condit have nothing that can threaten GSp? have u ever been in a fight of any sort? did u see diaz’s hands tonight? condits kicks? GSP is human. when was the last time gsp fought someone like diaz (never, no one even close to diaz’s style) when was the last time gsp has fought someone like condit? Alves? GSP is a GREAT fighter but so is nick and so i carlos. Matt Serra knocked out gsp for gods sake.
bert44 - February 5, 2012
Well,
GSP will take it to the ground. And in the short time they spent there tonight, Diaz was far better. I thought there was some exposure here.
DankNabbot - February 5, 2012
yea but after that showing, Nick didnt stand a chance at not getting his feelings hurt by GSP
F.U.B.A.R - February 5, 2012
Most likely.
I think it will be interesting to see how the knee injury affects his level changing. People joke about Gurgel’s propensity to stand and bang, but he does it because he doesn’t have the knees to shoot anymore.
ElliotMatheny - February 5, 2012
Queue the outrage that Condit "ran" the whole time. What I saw was a man who executed the perfect game plan tonight.
pud333 - February 5, 2012
This so fucking hard.
OleksiyPecherovsHomeboy - February 5, 2012
ditto
I taunted him like 3 times per round and the judges didn’t score that for me? fuck that i’m done with this shitCory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
Haha, well said my man
ElliotMatheny - February 5, 2012
Well
i think carlos executed the perfect game plan also but……that game plan was to stay on his bicycle and interupt diaz’s rythm and combinations. who are you kidding. the guy ran, literally,he ran. i mean how can you say he didnt.
bert44 - February 5, 2012
Nick pulled one of these
Damon O. - February 5, 2012
Is Condit the guy running away?
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
they drive the same car, too
Cory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
Boom!
pud333 - February 5, 2012
Condit is the guy running away, right?
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
Bravo, sir
Hungry for those Recs aren’t you?
Damon O. - February 5, 2012
Well if anyone wasn’t aware of it before, Nick is a vagina. His post fight speech really pissed me off.
savik - February 5, 2012
great fight, good riddance Nick. Punk.
JayT86 - February 5, 2012
It wasn’t a bad fight, but I didn’t find it particularly thrilling either.
Simen - February 5, 2012
Yeah
It had moments but was far from thrilling.
Carlos did a great job of sticking to a game plan but he literally turned his back and ran at least 10 times.
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
49-46 seemed like the clear score. Nick can say he was landing baby shots, but baby shots are better than no shots at all. Nick comes off as a really sore loser as well.
KeVbK - February 5, 2012 via mobile
49-46 is bullshit.
Haywire - February 5, 2012
Carlos figured him out. Where Nick’s other opponents backed against the cage and absorbed those high volumes of punches, Condit brilliantly ducked and weaved his way away, and Nick couldn’t land enough.
Tim Bernier - February 5, 2012
I was very, VERY impressed by how smart Condit fought
not every fight is a slobberknocker. He must have landed about 80 kicks. Very much looking forward to the fightmetric on this
Cory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
This.
To be honest, I thought Cyborg figured Diaz out, then he gassed and got armbarred. Condit had his way with Diaz.
andrew861 - February 5, 2012
Cyborg did the same thing
leg kick the shit out of Diaz and stay away from the cage. He then decided to get into Diaz’s guard and get submitted.
av1o3 - February 5, 2012
Exactly.
Nick backs you against the cage and then swarms. Condit refused to get into infighting, maintaining range and landing long strikes.
And those strikes were NASTY. Nick’s head is just made of granite. Anyone who calls that point fighting is seriously deluded.
Shaun32887 - February 5, 2012
I have yet to pick a fight right
….well a major one anyway. I should just bet the opposite of who I pick and I’ll clean up! I really wanted to see GSP-Diaz but I suppose its not to be…oh well
Sirus - February 5, 2012
Wasn’t the fight of the year I expected, but still a good fight. Glad the judges got it right, Condit landed better throughout. I had it 48-47 Condit, but I had a feeling it was going to piss some people off no matter what the outcome.
dpk875 - February 5, 2012
DIAZ is exposed. wow that was awesome, i lost points on that shit but Condit is a real martial artists. Read the Art of War in your down time Nick while hating your dad.
Jeremy Couturier - February 5, 2012
LOL like the Art of War will magically transform you into some kind of inscrutable martial arts master with all the wisdom of the Orient.
I wish white people would stop fellating Sun Tzu all the time. It’s a 3,000 year old military treatise, not some kind of font of ancient wisdom.
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
IT’S SARCASM. Do you think DIAZ evens reads? Really?
Jeremy Couturier - February 5, 2012
Can't remember the last time I SARCASTICALLY told someone to read a book.
I’m pretty sure the reason why you hate Diaz isn’t because he’s not a traditional intellecutal.
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
Also because he comes across as an idiot, jackass, foolish, dick.
jebmak - February 5, 2012
whoa, total kalib starnes flashback.
this was a shit fight to me. so disappointed. not that diaz lost but that the fight was a dud.
babaoki - February 5, 2012
MicahtheCynic - February 5, 2012
put that finger back in your ass. dude was running backwards the whole fight. it was not worthy of a belt.
babaoki - February 5, 2012
Kinda like this guy?
You might want to get up to date on this whole MMA thing and how it works.
MicahtheCynic - February 5, 2012
That's what I was telling my wife
who is pissed about the decision.
He got his Machida on.
On the bright side, we learned that Carlos was wrong. Nick will just walk through a shin to the head.
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
I think Condit did alot more damage than Lyoto when he's in "Macheetah" mode
ElliotMatheny - February 5, 2012
i like both machida and cruz, i am also a big fan of condit, usually. this fight was disappointing to say the least. i thought it was a toss up about who would win, but did not expect this at all. greg jackson is both a genius and an asshole.
babaoki - February 5, 2012
That comparison is an insult to Machida.
GhostMilk - February 5, 2012
Machida won the belt by stopping the champion.
His backing up is part of his style. He does the step back to his left thing then once his opponent follows he steps forward with a straight left or left kick, thats different then running from exchanges, you know what i mean. im not knocking condit but the way machida backs up during fights nd the way condit was in this fight are two fairly different things.
bert44 - February 5, 2012
That was Condit's 2nd decision
In 28 wins. One fight is one fight.
wonderfulspam - February 5, 2012
But…
seriously, hold a while. I’m looking for a excuse here.
Empty Thoughts - February 5, 2012
sooo
condit is supposed to let Diaz trap him on the fence and dig to the body?
T.P. Grant - February 5, 2012
Yup
That’s how you win. Staying on the pocket and getting hit in the body
Krimson - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Not worthy of a belt lol another diaz troll.
youfailme91 - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Starnes lost 30-24 on one card, didn't he? This was nothing close to that
Dino756 - February 5, 2012
That was nothing like Kalib Starnes.
dpk875 - February 5, 2012
Fail comparison is fail.
andrew861 - February 5, 2012
I wish I could un-rec this post.
eyeIess - February 5, 2012
Hate the fact a guy can get outlanded 51% to 32% on arm strikes and win because he landed 104 leg kicks that did nothing to stop his opponent.
FlyByKnight - February 5, 2012
whoa whoa where you get those stats?
kellly - February 5, 2012
CompuStrike. Checked it right after the fight ended.
FlyByKnight - February 5, 2012

“Leg kicks matter”
Tell that to Donald Cerrone.
FlyByKnight - February 5, 2012
?
I don’t get where you’re going with this.
garik16 - February 5, 2012
Right here
MicahtheCynic - February 5, 2012
Are kicks supposed to be registered as less important strikes in your head or something? Little fun fact you probably don’t know.. the legs are stronger than the arms. They’re also harder to control and risk your balance when striking with them. Suck it up.
MaximumWatermelon - February 5, 2012
The punches also didn’t stop either fighter so what’s your point?
Sean__H - February 5, 2012
i agree but thats just how mma is though
props tp condit for being able to get off so many kics though, that takes huge skill, didnt work so well for cerrone agaisnt nate.MMa judging is horribly basic, whenever i see a fight lie this and i try to figure out who the judges are going to give it to, i try to think of the fight in THE MOST BASIC FORM, i try to look at it like a person who has never seen an mma fight, seriously. I think this fight was a draw but i knew condit would get it bc of the fact that his kicks are more flashy and noticeable, alot of those punches diaz was landing were AMAZING, his hands looked good when he got on the inside,REALLY GOOD. this guys defisntely has the best boxing in mma, his punches are so straight and accurate, ive had 30 some amateur bxing fights and i can surely say diaz is improving immensely with his hands as is his brother. the way diaz was snapping condits head back was impressive. those are the shots that hurt, the accurate ones. I just knew that the judges wouldnt score them though (WHAT THE FUCK IS CECIL PEOPLES DOING JUDging A title fight in 2012 by the way). you see this alot in mma, noticeable visible things like takedowns and kicks score but body shots and inside fighting dont as much
bert44 - February 5, 2012
Yeah, because your arms are so much more powerful than your legs!
Oh wait.

flyingkneetoface - February 5, 2012
A "thrilling affair"?
Must have missed that part.
You see the sour look on GSP’s face? I guess it’s some sort of justice that the Jackson Point Fighting System ended up coming back to bite him in the ass. Probably just watched an extra few million dollars in endorsements go down the drain. Diaz/GSP would’ve been off the charts in terms of hype and marketing.
Oh well, just one more card I can’t be bothered ordering this year.
a tommy point - February 5, 2012
You're a fool, because that should actually be a fantastic fight.
The grappling will be wild with scrambles and submission attempts, the striking will be dynamic.

I think Nick got robbed
Nick was pressuring the whole time. I gave 1, 2, and 5 to Nick, 4 to Condit, and third one was a draw.
I feel why Nick is so pissed. but retiring? really?
DK_Monster - February 5, 2012
i disagree
i had rounds 1 & 2 a draw. 3 & 4 were pretty clearly Condit, and Nick won the 5th.
regardless, Condit fought the perfect fight to stop Diaz.
Diaz was his usual classless self in the post-fight interview. good riddance.
bobthewriter - February 5, 2012
You must have been wearing your Nick Diaz goggles. Pretty much every fight source had Condit winning at least 3 rounds.
andrew861 - February 5, 2012
i dont even like nick diaz that much
i always said that GSP would crush him like a bug
but i still think nick diaz won this fight.
oh and also i think as long as GSP’s knee is completely fine, Condit will get crushed too.
DK_Monster - February 5, 2012
Wonder who Carlos is gonna fight before GSP?
RUSHoverSPIDER - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Thrilling is a bit much
wasn’t a bad fight but wasn’t thrilling.
Tats16 - February 5, 2012
Also,
10% chance Nick actually retires.
Tim Bernier - February 5, 2012
This what I was afarid of. Condit fighting to out point Diaz.Diaz fights to finish and beat the other fighters. Really no signifigant damage landed by either fighter. The sub attenmpts at the end where was the closest either came to a finish.
oakfan52 - February 5, 2012
You forgot the sarcasm font. Diaz looked like he was hiding grapefruits under his eyebrows.
MicahtheCynic - February 5, 2012
What a great fight
Now how do you use the sarcasm font?
Full Mount - February 5, 2012 via mobile
It's whatever, you know?
These guys wanna run away, lay on top, win on points or whatever. You just want to retreat and run away like a punk bitch and these judges think you’re doing good and shit. I don’t care about that bullshit. These judges you know, they don’t know what real fighting is like. They never fight in a real fight or take any Robbie Lawler punches. The judges just… uhhh, they…. they judge you on things like little bably taps and shit. I don’t do that, I don’t give a fuck, I fight because we’re fighting you know? Fuck all you motherfuckers.

pdl - February 5, 2012

he didn't fall for brawling with Diaz? so what!
Rampage01 - February 5, 2012

kellly - February 5, 2012
So he should have just stood there in the pocket and let Diaz work his game plan instead?
I don’t get what you want from Condit.
pud333 - February 5, 2012
it was totally smart
and to be clear: condit won, but that’s not what i was expecting when i had the butterflies during fighter intros
kellly - February 5, 2012
and that is a bummer
i don’t blame condit, i’m not mad
kellly - February 5, 2012
To be honest
Neither was I. Which is why the way the fight unfolded was very surprising, yet still entertaining to me.
pud333 - February 5, 2012
it was entertaining in a cerebral way
bu it didn’t touch my v-spot
kellly - February 5, 2012
There certainly was no "Wonderboy" head kick moment.
pud333 - February 5, 2012
It was alright but I would hardly call it thrilling or even a good fight……..
The fight was really close I thought 2nd round was even 1st and 5th to diaz vs 3rd and 4th to condit having said that Condit did his best machida impression but didnt land the type of damage that machida does in spurts when he is on his game.
The_Devil_You_Know - February 5, 2012
I know it was the same idea
but I’ve never seen Machida turn his back and run halfway across the octagon to avoid his opponent.
Doug Chu - February 5, 2012
Hardly a thrilling fight??
You say this:
It was alright but I would hardly call it thrilling or even a good fight……..
But then say this:
The fight was really close I thought
Wouldn’t that have made it a “thrilling fight”?? or a “good fight”….I want DIAZ v GSP as well but c’mon son! Condit was hitting him and escaping those classic Diaz traps

Nick Diaz needs to fit the mma game. showing off his jj too late.
he also needs to stop bitchin
higgledy-piggledy - February 5, 2012
Condit refused to play diaz’s game, and Diaz never chose to use his bjj, so he lost. God forbid he face a dominant wrestler, like oh GSP. It’s MIXED MARTIAL ARTS. question is if nick decided to become one.
Jeremy Couturier - February 5, 2012
JUST BLEED RARRRR!
MicahtheCynic - February 5, 2012
Fuck You Nick.
If you won I would have gotten every fight right on playground and gotten a score of 102 or more.
Sugel Mendoza - February 5, 2012
I wanted Diaz to win
But Condit had the better gameplan. Sucks that I sacrificed 3 hours watching a relatively boring PPV when I should have been studying
shogunism - February 5, 2012
let's hope he shows up to the post-fight press conference
the fight may have been boring, but I doubt the presser would be. but I’m not sure he’ll show.
mollcutpurse - February 5, 2012
Elitex10x - February 5, 2012
Condit used a brilliant gameplan and got the win, but it wasn’t like he fucking LnP’d Nick or anything. Condit fought Nick and landed more and often harder. Diaz couldn’t impose his gameplan on Condit. Sure, it may have been a more exciting fight if Diaz was able to get Condit up against the cage more and unload to his body and head and have him rocked, but that didn’t happen. It was STILL a good fight, they were getting after it.
I’m a big fan of both guys, but very disappointed in how Diaz handled himself in the post-fight speech. If he retires because of this, it’ll be a damn shame. Maybe if he wasn’t so averse to learning some wrestling, he would’ve been able to get the fight to the ground and tap Condit.
FreeFocus - February 5, 2012
I don't remember Nick landing anything of substance
At least condit actually landed. You don’t win rounds by taunting.
KeVbK - February 5, 2012 via mobile

Same thing will happen there, too.
a tommy point - February 5, 2012
Wow
you have NO respect for Diaz if you think that Bolt can kick his ass.
jebmak - February 5, 2012
Thank you Tim Burke
This was a highly technical chess match at the top of the welterweight division. Those calling for a “snoozefest” between GSP and Condit are maniacs – Condit is the same guy that blitzed DHK and fought an epic was with Rory and had you all foaming at the mouth. He fought the perfect fight tonight. His gameplan against GSP will not resemble this at all…
dancharleton - February 5, 2012
exactly
Gameplanning for GSP is not the same as gameplanning for Diaz.
sitnam90 - February 5, 2012 via mobile
I think this is a closer fight than people think
People are either heavily biased for or against Diaz it seems.
I had round 1 a draw, round 2 for diaz, round 3 and 4 for condit and round 5 was close, was in condit’s favour until nick took his back for like a minute and had dominant position.
But I think it could go either way. I need to watch again. Condit had a great gameplan though. We saw what would happen if Condit chilled on the cage for a brief moment, and he avoided it very well.
Tats16 - February 5, 2012
Well put
i give slight edge to diaz in round 1 even though not much happened because he was walking condit down. round 5 is also really tough to call. i bet that all the judges gave this round to diaz (mma judges always seem to give close rounds to the guy who gets a takedown even if he doesnt do much with it). It seemed like condit was in amazing shape and was starting to land some real nice shots in 4 and 5 but for the first 3 it seemed like he was honestly just trying to win a points game. it pains me to say that but i just cant deny it i mean when have we ever seen condit backpedal and run from exchanges like that
bert44 - February 5, 2012
I had the same scorecard
But gave the fifth to Condit for being in control most of the round
IRodC - February 5, 2012
Hey fuck you Condit fans! How dare he incorporate leg kicks and counter punching into a well formulated gameplan and expose the holes in Diaz’s game. He should’ve stayed at the fence so Diaz could work his boxing . Nick is the greatest striker in MMA, he’s a cardio machine and a good person, and uh, he threw punches, and..kicks? Condit was just backing away the whole fight…Well fuck you all, but Diaz got robbed.
savik - February 5, 2012
Run forest, Run !!!
I though Condit was going to bring it… instead he ran the whole time.. what boring fight. How could anyone enjoy watching lay & pray or run away… there needs to be a penalty to turning your back and running away.
Jason Robillard - February 5, 2012
i agree
In boxing you get disqualified for turning on your opponent.).Then again The last thing we need is another rule that refs would botch and create controversy. ive noticed recently how easily gusy can foul in mma fights and get away with it. case in point, bisping vs sonnen. that whole 1st round was FILTHY. Head butts, nut shots, cage holding, rabbit punches, i swear i even saw chael grab bispings nuts.
bert44 - February 5, 2012
In boxing
Nick Diaz would also get out pointed by better boxers, who will apparently be told that they didn’t come to fight
IRodC - February 5, 2012
No
They would knock him out eventually. :P
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
Well you know
They knocked me out and whatever but I came to fight he came to not get knocked out you know I’m sick of this shit, knocking out people is they wat you win in this sport it seems but whatever you know.
IRodC - February 5, 2012
This ain't boxing dude
You get dq’d for throwing kicks, elbows, takedowns, etc. So what? He moved out of certain danger (against the cage) into a better position and proceeded to outstrike Diaz.
You are pissed off that your boy Diaz lost? Sure. No need to discredit Condit because of it.
BiscoBisco - February 5, 2012
I can't believe I started to fall for Diaz again.
All that pre-fight talk about who he is made him sound awesome. Then he goes and says he’s going to retire after this and complains. Now I understand. It’s not just being wrestlefucked, it’s losing. He’s such a baby.
kreally - February 5, 2012
bingo
Cory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
i wouldn't call this a thrilling fight, nor a snoozefest
but it was compelling, because Condit was the first guy to really show how to beat Nick Diaz 2.0 … FWIW, i think Condit clearly won.

Good gameplan for Condit against the Diaz style of fighting. Sucks that he was just fighting to win the decision but still a good gameplan nonetheless. Not exactly the dogfight they made it out to be when hyping the fight. I could see how that would frustrate Nick but he was being a damn crybaby in the post-fight interview.

The other judge had R2 and R5 to Diaz.
garik16 - February 5, 2012
Peoples and Jarman fucked it up
even though I think Nick Diaz won, I think I can agree with Kamijo’s decision.
but Peoples and Jarman literally fucked it up.
DK_Monster - February 5, 2012
I scored it 48-48
So I’m fine with the decision going either way.
I just wish that this notion of you can’t win a striking match while backpedaling would die a horrible death.
Tonley - February 5, 2012
If you don’t like the way Greg Jackson helps his fighters win, then write to your state athletic commission and tell them to change the rules of MMA.
Finian1 - February 5, 2012
Well, we are seeing who the non Mma fans are in this thread if they are complaining about Conditions and him outstriking Diaz, or those who think diaz won. It may not have been fight of the year, but it was still a very compelling fight, and great job by Condit, who clearly won.
Hardcharger - February 5, 2012 via mobile
I scored it 49-46, but you can make an argument that Diaz won
Only one round was pretty clearly one persons (R4 to Condit)
That said, you can tell the people who just enjoy brutality as opposed to fights by the ones who simply call what Condit did as running away.
garik16 - February 5, 2012
I had it 49-46 as well. Leg kicks count, just like body shot punches. Diaz was beieng a sore loser, and disingenuous.
Hardcharger - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Carlos was running
Tactical running, but he was definitely running
Full Mount - February 5, 2012 via mobile
agreed. its one thing to not get hit, its another to jog backwards the whole time.
babaoki - February 5, 2012
It's funny because Diaz fans might have some kind of leg to stand on (though I think Condit clearly won) if they actually used, you know, logical points.
Instead of going all Nick Diaz and just saying “HE RAN”
James Brady - February 5, 2012
Octagon control.
How much does it factor in? Condit never owned the ring. Not unless the number of laps counted.
Ionnes - February 5, 2012
Kaleb must have won his fight too then.
Ionnes - February 5, 2012
LOL @ troll
jebmak - February 5, 2012
I think Diaz won rounds 1 and 2 by being a similarly effective striker while clearly more aggressive.
Diaz and Condit were fairly even in most judging categories but Diaz clearly took the “aggression” line, which is a scoring criterion. In round 5 he was simply more effective offensively, particularly grappling. Therefore I scored it 48-47 Diaz.
pdl - February 5, 2012
Interesting note on twitter
Tonley - February 5, 2012
The only counter to Diaz’s game is to wrestle him to the ground or do what Condit did.. it wasnt running it was not being caught against the cage where Diaz pushed him.. when they were in the center Condit was owning him
souperman321 - February 5, 2012
exactly
Carlos was getting off first even in the center of the octagon. And then he wasn’t there for the return. That’s the basis of winning fights. Hit and don’t get hit.
traydawg - February 5, 2012
According to Compustrike
Condit outlanded Diaz 146 to 110.
Yeah, but he was totally running the whole time, right?!?!?!?
OleksiyPecherovsHomeboy - February 5, 2012
Honestly though
if Diaz didn’t stop fighting to talk shit this fight would have been a lot closer.

kellly - February 5, 2012
Well, we now see what Carlos is made of
Let’s see him outpoint GSP
Full Mount - February 5, 2012 via mobile
i do think it will be closer than people think
the movement from carlos will help him in that fight, but he will not be able to kick like that against gsp.
KeVbK - February 5, 2012
he will have to use a different strategy than he used tonight. I’m guessing he will try to get back up immediately after being taken down or use his sweeps from the bottom. And on the feet he probably won’t run as much, as GSP doesn’t throw with as much volume.
traydawg - February 5, 2012
Sigh
You just don’t understand how excited I was for this fight. Carlos fought a smart fight, but that was why I enjoyed watching him, he fought to finish. But tonight, not once did it look like he was trying to finish him, not even the headkicks or backfists. GSP is gonna easily decision him and I’m just not gonna care
Full Mount - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Listen, you're right that you should prefer a fighter to go for a finish
But a fighter needs to be smart…..decisions happen because fighters find themselves in situations where they CANT go for a finish without putting themselves in a really dangerous situation.
The GSP Complaints are different – GSP outclasses all of his opponents, but is super duper risk averse that he doesn’t go for finishes. Here, Condit DIDNT have a big enough advantage over Diaz in order to allow him to go for a finish. It wasn’t possible.
garik16 - February 5, 2012
Lol
He never had a chance to finish him because he was using his “great movement” to avoid getting his back attached to a fence. I like to think that I’m a pretty good fan, and I enjoy all aspects of the sport even a good fitching. But dammit, if I want a little violence every now and then, I expect the guy with 26 out of 28 finishes vs Nick Diaz to deliver
Full Mount - February 5, 2012 via mobile
I’m happy for Condit. He had a great game plan and fought smart the whole way through. I’m just gutted that this fight didn’t live up to the hype. It never felt close to being finished. There was no danger. Nothing. Neither fighter looked closed to being hurt. It was just disappointing. This should’ve been FOTY. Ah well . . .

IRodC - February 5, 2012
Why are you being so defensive, he was just making a joke.
jebmak - February 5, 2012
The only counter to Diaz’s game is to wrestle him to the ground or do what Condit did.. it wasnt running it was not being caught against the cage where Diaz pushed him.. when they were in the center Condit was owning him
souperman321 - February 5, 2012
If you outwreslte Diaz you are a coward
If you outpoint Diaz you are a coward.
Basically, you should play to Diaz’ strengths to not be a coward.
Next time someone fights Clay Guida they should stay on their back because they should play to his strenghts or they are cowards.
IRodC - February 5, 2012
So true
Condit should have just stood right in front of Diaz and took those punches in bunches. Condit would have somehow found a way to win lol.
CyLoke - February 5, 2012
Condit winning isn’t the outcome Dana wanted
CollegeDropIn - February 5, 2012
Yup. That's the bigger story.
Lost a potential million buy PPV tonight
Tonley - February 5, 2012
For now
If Dan Hardy could get a title shot, Nick can get one, too.
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
It is a shame
That people are happy with a Nick Diaz retirement. He is a great fighter.
Bobby Flay - February 5, 2012
Did anyone catch what Lorenzo asked Diaz?
Holls Hoyce - February 5, 2012
Fightmetric would seemingly have it 48-47 Condit
garik16 - February 5, 2012
Yup.
Here’s their in-depth report:
http://blog.fightmetric.com/2012/02/condit-vs-diaz-official-ufc-statistics.html#more
Gave Condit the 1st, 3rd, and 4th
Tonley - February 5, 2012
Yes!
Boy, am I glad I lost my bet on MMA Playground & Condit won! At most, Diaz won two rounds, even though I thought he lost four of ‘em to Condit…oh yeah, strategy wins the day! If Diaz does really retire, it’s a shame to see him and his brawling leave. I’ve always thought he was an entertaining fighter, but he’s at least publicly always portrayed himself as a representative of all that I stand against in our culture.
Captain Beyond - February 5, 2012
Don't know if I can do this, sorry mods if you want to erase this you can
but here is my personal opinion on the whole thing.

Hart Thorson - February 5, 2012
What’s up with everyone bitching about this fight being boring ? I understand when a guy lays on another guy for 5 rounds, but these two dudes went back and forth at each other for 5 rounds. Stop bitching just because no one got knocked out. Some of you don’t care for the strategic/sport aspect of mma and just want to see blood and knock outs. gtfo.
MaximumWatermelon - February 5, 2012
I didn’t care for a finish. Just the intent to finish. Just because some of us are disappointed in a fight that, on paper, was a FOTY candidate, doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate effective gameplans. I thought Condit did brilliantly and throughly deserved the win.
Holls Hoyce - February 5, 2012
Carlos would have KO'd damn near anyone else
A couple of those kicks were hard and flush on the chin.
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
So you think that Condit didn’t have the intent to finish? Just because he didn’t finish him doesn’t mean he didn’t try.
MaximumWatermelon - February 5, 2012
I think that you underestimate the difficulty of finishing Diaz.
jebmak - February 5, 2012
I will sit here and wait patiently for:
“Condit is boring”
“Damn that Champion producer Greg jackson”
“Kalib Kalib Kalib”
“Nick Diaz came to fight, Condit came for points”
IRodC - February 5, 2012
All these were already said
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
Sorry i meant fanposts
IRodC - February 5, 2012
Why the hell Diaz fans think they have the right to dictate a gameplan to his opponent?
burakkuburain - February 5, 2012
There's a lot of very unintelligent Diaz fans
Much like the fighter, they seem to whine a lot during a loss
Cory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
It goes both ways
Please flag him BTW.
TheFilt - February 5, 2012
Not saying there aren't dumbo fans on the other side of the fence
but it’s been a real treat to separate the actual MMA fans from the silly tough guy nonsense tonight. A good friend called me up 2 minutes after the fight and we had a great 15 minute discussion on what we thought happened. He scored it for Diaz, I clearly thought Condit won. But because both of us can hold intelligent discussions, we talked and heard what each other had to say. We’re both actual MMA fans, not whiny supporters of one guy or the other.
Now the first line from whoever that dude was, yes that gets flagged imo. I’m not a fan at all of Diaz’s I’m taking my ball and going home nonsense – much like the rest of what he says.
Cory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
Babies
Just a bunch of babies who don’t get MMA
CyLoke - February 5, 2012
This fight was for a fake title. An interim champ is like the stand in version of the real champion. Sucks because I bet Condit actuallt considers himself a real champion. Truth is he’s not because the recognized champ is GSP. Interim titles are like stickers for the kids who can’t color inside the lines like the two or three kids who can. It’s just….a wasted politically correct pat on the back.
CollegeDropIn - February 5, 2012
It’s to crown who is the No. 2 guy in the division. If GSP is too hurt to come back, then he’s the No. 1 guy. It’s not the official title, but he is, right now, the best active fighter at WW.
James Brady - February 5, 2012
I like how you assume this about Condit for absolutely no reason at all.
jebmak - February 5, 2012
I hope tomorrow we have real football fans
saying that quarterbacks should stand there like a man and fling the ball as far as they can every time. None of this nonsense about going for variety and doing what counts toward gaining points and wins.
James Kimbell - February 5, 2012
ahem
Cory Braiterman - February 5, 2012
REX NEVER DIE
Tonley - February 5, 2012
Condit's Conditioning
Impressive… almost as much as his gameplan.
MirCatOrgy - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Suck shit Diaz
Although i lost $160 on that fight its a price i am glad to pay to watch Diaz lose to Condit.
Chin Check - February 5, 2012
I agree!
Captain Beyond - February 5, 2012
Dear fellow Diaz fans,
Condit outlanded and outsmarted Diaz. Deal with it. You’re making us look bad.
