UFC 143 Results: Carlos Condit And Greg Jackson Solved Nick Diaz

Going into UFC 143's welterweight interim title fight between Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz, the expectations were that Diaz would inevitably outstrike and wear down Condit with his unique blend of high-volume punching and incredible conditioning.

Diaz was expected to corner Condit up against the cage and box him up with barrages of arm punches that would slowly but surely accumulate and grind Condit down. Just like Diaz beat down B.J. Penn, Evangelista Santos, Paul Daley and so many others.

But it didn't happen like that because Condit and his coach Greg Jackson put together a game plan that defused Diaz' advantages and because Condit's conditioning proved to be more than a match for Diaz'. Diaz did back Condit up throughout most of the fight. Diaz relentlessly walked Condit down and struck when he backed against the fence. But just as often, Condit counter-struck and spun away, back to the center of the cage.

Judges Score Cards From Condit Vs. Diaz | Nick Diaz Announces Retirement After Loss

And while Diaz did out-punch Condit, Condit out-struck Diaz by out-kicking, out-kneeing and out-elbowing him over the course of the fight. Condit also picked up the pace in the championship rounds and really had Diaz frustrated in the fourth round. Diaz did come back at the end of the fifth to get a take down and attack Condit's throat and left arm, but he was unable to get the finish.

In the end, Condit took home a unanimous decision with all three judges agreeing that he'd won three rounds. They didn't agree about which three rounds he won but they all agreed he won three. CompuStrike showed that Condit outstruck Diaz 146-100, despite being outpunched 42-86. FightMetric scored it 306-274 for Condit with their unique but very apt scoring system.

The long and short of it is that Greg Jackson and Condit figured out how to beat Diaz and Condit executed on it.

pretty frustrating fight to watch

But props to Condit, might have not been the most dramatic performance but if you have a way to beat your opponent you would do that to take the W

I was really impressed that he didnt get overwhelmed at all and had some really nice counters and slips.

I can root for GSP now atleast, should be a great showdown between two game planning fighters

i just find it tough

to give a guy a fight that was backing up and counter attacking most of the fight. the whole fight i was thinking back to machida vs rampage and how that outcome went. i think its also very telling that most of the fighters scored 3-2 for diaz.

a side note. Diaz would be a beast back in the early UFC. if they only had weight classes but not clock and you have to win by ko or tap. Diaz would dominate that. His old coach on prime time was right. Diaz worst opponent is the time clock.

That really is the big issue when scoring. (and the value of a unused takedown) I absolutly think you can win a fight even if you not are the one walking forward. In my opinion landing strikes, and being able to dictate where the fight will take place should be worth more than being the one walking forward.

machida didnt land the strikes that condit did
Agreed

I am completely unbiased in this fight. i dont understand how people are saying condit just ran the whole fight or whatever. He engaged alot and he also countered alot. If Diaz cant corner him then thats his problem. Diaz should have changed his strategy. i realy dont think the fight was all that close, i think condit won the first 4 rounds. There is also alot of diaz dickriders out there who dont wana give carlos props. even joe rogan. I heard rogan say something like" i dont know if the judges are giving it to condit? i mean he is attacking and being aggressive but do the judges give points for that?" isnt aggression and octagon control right up there with effective striking and grappling. condit won, no doubt.

This is why belts are bad

Leading up to this fight Condit was a very exciting figther

Put a belt on the line

Now its a field goal kicking contest that noone wants to see.

I think it is more of the fact that as you get towards the top it becomes harder and harder to get flashy KOs. I do not think it is a mindset change.

exactly

once you end up with the tougher guys in the upper echelon, finishes can be hard to come by.

There’s also the financial rewards to think about, though.

If I was going to fight Nick Diaz and knew the difference between winning and losing might be measured in millions of dollars every year, well, I know I’d probably tend towards a safer gameplan…

this^

Condit can play race to land a left hook with Dan Hardy, but you don’t want to do that with a guy like Diaz

What were you expecting Condit to do exactly? Diaz has proven time and time again to have a granite chin, and he traps his opponent against the cage. Why play Diaz’s game? It just seems ridiculous to do so. If it were another opponent, I can see Condit being a bit more risk-taking, but he’s fighting a guy in Diaz that has proven to be difficult to finish.

What were you expecting Condit to do exactly?

I can’t speak for the guy you asked, but I expected Condit to fight the way that I have become accustomed to watching him fight, how he said he was going to fight in the lead up to tonight, and how the fight was promoted.

I did not expect Carlos Condit to fight like Andre Dirrel last night. It was honestly the last thing I thought would happen.

Imagine if this had headlined on Fox?

Natural Born Killer my ass

natural born backpedaler. I expected a fight, not one guy trying to fight while the other guy ran away.

I guess we were watching different fights.

It wasn’t a slugfest, but Condit was landing.

Have to agree with you.

Condit needs a new nickname.

Love your stuff Nate, but Shogun solved Machida, Velasquez solved Lesnar. I’d say Condit hit and moved (and ran a bit) his way to a close, arguable decision win.
It won’t ever happen, but Diaz would thrive on a championship boxing time limit of 36 minutes. 5×5 isn’t long enough for a guy like that to really come in to his own.

Yeah right.

Diaz was only slowing down the more the fight went on. Carlos’ low kicks were accruing serious interest.

The sport may have lost another actual "fighter" in Diaz

and gain another “athlete” in Condit. That being said I find it funny the judges were not on the same page for which rounds they gave to Condit, adds all the more controversy to this.

Hats off to Condit he did what he needed to do to win I guess.

Seriously

If you want to see guys stand in the pocket and throw caution to the wind at the upper echelon of the sport, go watch some Tough Man competitions.

I find it funny that just about every fighter thought Nick won as well

I want to see guys that are fighting to win decisively not doing enough not lose. Thank you for your opinion though.

every fighter like who? and whats the point of even bringing that up?

since it was the judges hands that Diaz left his fate in so who really gives a fuck who you or the “every fighter” thinks won because he didnt and thats all there is to it lol

not sure why its double posting since im on my lappy but cant edit or delete so gg
I'll prob get banned for this

http://www.mmafighting.com/2012/2/5/2772168/ufc-143-twitter-nick-diaz-vs-carlos-condit-pros-score

Why would you possibly get banned for linking to a relevant and interesting piece from MMA Fighting?

Unless they are named Patricia Morse-Jarman, Junichiro Kamijo and Cecil Peoples.

I really dont give a shit.

Diaz walked forward, ate counters and lost a decision. Its THAT cut and dry.

I love this comment.

Walking forward doesn’t mean he won. Condit was using movement to counteract Diaz’s strategy, which was to trap him against the fence and wail on his ribs and face. Condit stuck his combos and got out before Diaz did what he wanted, and made Diaz look bad.

Condit ate a lot of huge shots early in that fight

I don’t see how Diaz looked bad. Diaz didn’t get a chance to land, but when he did he fired some head snapping shots.

Diaz looked bad because he didnt adapt and kept plugging away with a failing strategy

The writing was on the wall in the 3rd and 4th round, Gone was the taunting and dropping of hands because he knew the fight was slipping away from him and STILL didnt change his approach.

That takedown in the 5th was the only reason i even gave him that round and even then Condit’s hand/wrist control was impeccable.

Condit deserved this win.

Diaz has a terrible corner

I still thought he won, but it was pretty close. I thought you could score the second, third, and fifth for him.

Third? Im sorry but that was easily Condit's strongest round

I gave Diaz the 1st and 5th, I can see an argument for the 2nd possibly but thats about it, Condit easily took the 3rd and 4th in my books.

In saying that, I dont know how 2 of the judges scored that fight 4 49-46, It was 48-47 Condit.

Then again an argument could be made for Condit winning the 1st also.
Agreed.

Was just stating that your not off your meds if you thought Diaz won, its not that wild of a thought.

Wasn't sure on the policy for linking to other sites

Sorry I’ve been in forums where they dont look too kind on it. Forgive the ignorance.

No worries. We’re generally fine with it, and MMA Fighting in particular is under the same corporate umbrella as we are, so no issues at all.

I promised I wouldn't comment on this fight anymore, but this made me break it

@jonfitchdotnet
Jon Fitch
I think condit won

Thanks for the link Chute. But everybody who thought Diaz won ain’t nothing but a goon who can only appreciate drunken red necks brawling it out in good ol’ toughman.

easy on the name calling
Or we prefer guys that actually fight

Not run away for 5 rounds.

Most?

So 10 of 20 tweets think Diaz won (2 of them train with him) and you say most fighters? Reaching there a bit aren’t we?

Im not bc the others say it was a draw. How many actually gave the nod to Carlos?

But thats not the point was just responding to the user that said you are mentally handicap if you thought Diaz won.

My bad

Misread and responded while reading other nonsense.

No worries

It would normally be a fallacious argument on my part but just had to point it out that us nuthuggers aren’t alone haha

talk about reaching

of the 20 tweets that were posted:

14 said Diaz won, or expressed anger at Condit running
4 said Condit won
1 said draw
and Miguel Torres made a joke.

Seems like you’re mad that people who fight for a living saw the fight differently than you did.

Great.

And GSP has the game plan to beat all the other middle weights in the UFC. I’m glad we’ll all be praising GSP for his masterful, technical game planning henceforth, and not calling him out for point-fighting and low-risk decisioning.

Nate, you should say that the judges agreed Condit won at least three rounds, since two of them gave him four.

Otherwise, good stuff. While not the brawl I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the implementation of the perfect gameplan. You have to be able to adjust when you can’t impose your will, and Diaz did not.

God i love how butthurt all the Diaz nuthuggers are right now

Totally makes this win for Condit so, so much sweeter.

Diaz got beaten at his own game and i couldnt be happier about it hahahaha

right its so sweet right now all the fighters and people who think nick diaz won honestly you need mental help. i think i read the best summary of this loser and his excuses: loses to wrestlers their gay and they lnp, loses to smarter fighter he’s a point fighter and not a real fighter. dude this is someones life here and if standing in front of a guy and getting hit not winning wins fights i dont wanna be a fan of this sport

Bye

you sound like my ex are you hurt as well that your not a pretty as the chick im with now? i love when nick diaz loses it really brings out that hatred outta yalll i feel like oj winning the trial :)

Mac you’re a real intellectual.

i like how when jon jones ,lyoto machida and countless other fight smart like condit did they never get told they where running. this fight pretty much sums up how little our sport has grown in maturity guy out classes a guy and he’s called a bitch for it really ? oh but you like the guy who constantly acts like he’s 8 years old

Jon Jones finishes the best of the best in his weight class

waaa waaa
I got beat but I’m not accepting this loss
for years I have complained I’m not making any money
now you pay me too much
I’m out
baby leg kicks
waaa waaa
I’m out of this shit

I give Condit his due, but I hate where this is going..

Nor do I blame him (and Greg Jackson). This is about winning, and standing in front of Nick trying to land bigger bombs was not where it’s at. Still, the many times I saw Condit literally turn and run away kind of disgusted me. Again, I can’t knock it when the result is a win, but maybe it would seem better if there were at least some leg sweeps or takedown attempts mixed in instead of turning coat and running away.

Opinion poll: What’s going to be more exciting GSP vs Condit or GSP vs Diaz?

Diaz would have got worked.

That fight just confirmed it for me.

running away

Why is it when you move to put yourself in a better position its called running away?

Because its an easy excuse to make when ur hero gets beaten

Call at clutching at the convenient straw lol

After reading the posts in this story, all I can think is, what happened to the banhammer?? Two years ago, half of these comments would’ve been flagged and at least warned. I’m very close to finding a new site to visit 25 times a day. What a disgrace.

yeah

loads of people have been getting away with fighter bashing recently, but its probably due to the site not being as monitored as it used to be.

Yup

That’s what brought me here in the first place, good stories, intelligent discussions, and great comment monitoring. Oh well I guess.

The blind hate and ignorance spewing from both sides is really killing the mood here

Can’t we all just get along?

I had to pick up my toys and go home from this argument

If I had to have one more random lurker with 12 comments call me ignorant I was going to lose it.

we're trying to keep up with the volume of comments

but its just murder.

I know you guys try, maybe make people pass some sort of quiz before approving their membership! Hahaha

I don't really understand the disappointment

I am disappointed by the disappointment, actually. I found the fight to be a buffet of technical standup fighting and counter-fighting. Very tense, very exciting. Condit simply has a bigger tool-chest than Diaz and if being a good puncher was all that was need to be a great MIXED martial artist, we’d have a pretty dull sport in my opinion.

What I liked most about the fight is the methodical, cagey dismantling of the Diaz enigma over the course of five rounds. Condit didn’t fall into the “let’s brawl, you pussy” mentality that seems to be plaguing this sport’s fandom.

I for one do not want endless repeats of Frye/Takayama. I’ll take Diaz/Condit any day.

agreed

Really enjoyed this fight. Friend of mine who is more casual did too, even after hearing all the ridiculous hype.

I think a lot of "fans" just want this:

That's what I was hoping for, yes.

And that’s what I was promised by both fighters and the promoter. I was told that one never stops coming forward like the terminator and will eat any punishment to get the kill, and the other has the best finish rate in the UFC and will throw everything he has into trying to finish you.

Well, the first fighter performed as advertised, but the second one fought a masterful, technical fight based on movement. OK, fine. That’s what GSP does, too. I guess we won’t hear any complaints about him in the future.

Nick won.

Carlos didn’t solve shit.

Actually no. Nick lost
