Roy Nelson was bleeding all over the Octagon after taking a hard knee during his UFC 143 bout against Fabricio Werdum. He tweeted a photo of that large cut he sustained, and it came with this message:
Here is the cut from me head butting Werdum's knee in the 1st. My face is fine, forehead is a little sore.

Here's the play-by-play of the entire fight from our live blog of the event:
Roy Nelson vs. Fabricio Werdum - Round 1 - Werdum has Nelson's back incredibly quickly and takes it to the mat. Nelson is able to get to his feet. Werdum with some knees. Nelson working an uppercut while Werdum has him in the plum. Knees to the body and now the head by Werdum. Nelson turns Werdum now and is landing some left hands. Werdum working the knees again but now Nelson is grabbing a body lock and just holding it. Nelson is bleeding very badly from somewhere around his nose. They break and time is called to check the cut on Nelson. Doctor immediately says he is fine and they continue. Leg kick by Werdum and another knee. Leg kick by Werdum now. Right hand by Werdum and another leg kick. Nelson catches a kick from Werdum and takes him down. Nelson follows him and almost gets armbarred but pops out. 10-98 round for Werdum and Nelson looks gassed already.
Round 2 - Leg kick by Werdum. Big knee to the body by Werdum and Nelson falls briefly. Leg kick by Nelson. Huge leg kick by Werdum now. Werdum really trying to pour it on but Nelson flails some punches to back him off. A few punches land for Nelson but another big knee to the body by Werdum. Leg kick by Werdum. Werdum with a hard leg kick and Nelson misses a punch. Head kick by Werdum, Nelson with a hook. Front kick by Werdum. Things are slowing down a bit. Leg kick by Werdum and Nelson misses with a right hand. Body kick by Werdum. Right hand and a knee by Werdum. Nelson lands a big left and Werdum has to move away for a second. Few punches by Nelson. And that's it for that round. 10-9 Werdum.
Round 3 - Nelson with a standing guillotine attempt early in the round. It's pretty deep and Nelson is really going for it but his arms weren't going to cooperate. Werdume with a nice flurry of strikes, punctuated with a knee to the chin. Big right hand and a knee by Werdum. Werdum jabbing now. Big front kick to the face and Nelson walks forward. Leg kick by Werdum. Werdum just worked Nelson over in this fight. 10-9 Werdum.

Maybe you should put the picture after the jump
I’m pretty sure some people wouldn’t like to open BE and have a huge picture of a mutilated trucker on their screen.

The site is called "Bloody Elbow"
I don’t think people are coming here expecting lolcats.

Usually lolcats is all they get though

We have it on the front page at Gals Guide, too!
I thought it was a pretty awesome and gnarly picture.

Nelson is a tough SOB
Despite JoRo going nuts and telling us NINE OUT OF TEN HUMAN BEINGS ON THE PLANET WOULD BE OBLITERATED BY THE NUCLEAR IMPACT OF THOSE NEEDS, he took hard shots – worse than the JDS beating he took – and tried to stay in the fight. His cardio didn’t fade as bade as the PbP results suggested, he just couldn’t close in.
Werdun’s strikng was amazing though. Did not expect that.
ihateemo - February 6, 2012
Yeah
Werdum’s striking looked so fluid, I was impressed.
SentientAndroid - February 6, 2012
But he still fights like Tank Abbott Jr
Big fan of Roy’s, but his standup is a mess. Move forward, get hit, throw that flailing right; rinse, repeat. Was hoping that the fight would go to the ground more so we could see whose jits was better. Would love to see Roy improve the technical aspects of his striking as he’s got power, but that’s it. Imagine him boxing like Nate Diaz versus Cowboy? Bodies would rain down.
BTW, Rogan comments aside, that one knee to the face they kept replaying was SICK.
Do agree 100% about Werdum’s striking. Scary stuff for a guy who just 6 months ago was flopping onto his back constantly. He’s a force to be reckoned with at HW.

Title retract
Roy’s standup is still like Tank Abbott Jr
djabstract - February 7, 2012
I think Roy had a great performance.
Werdum was just better.
Great fight.
tkotom - February 6, 2012
yep.
I was just pissed at Werdum during the 2nd and 3rd rounds where he was more content on circling without throwing much anymore, knowing he’s probably up on the score cards. He could’ve tried to finish Roy, but I guess he was more concerned about pointing on the ground and those other antics, or he just didn’t want to risk getting KO’d
Anton Tabuena - February 6, 2012
I felt that him going to the ground was just him trying to prove something.
He clearly had the better stand up imo and I was shouting for him to go for the finish. Perhaps he just bought into the belief that it’s too difficult to finish Roy.
The thing was though he was content in circling to the left, right into the big right hand… it’s almost like he had no respect for Roy’s power at times. Roy did tag him but Werdum shrugged it off nearly every time.
He gets a hard time because of the JDS KO but that punch was pretty savage. I’m hoping for Werdum Mir.
tkotom - February 6, 2012
yep
same here. Werdum vs. Mir makes a lot of sense at this point.
Anton Tabuena - February 6, 2012
I think
He was winded too and was saving gas.
taptomyarmbar - February 6, 2012
that's what I was thinking too.
if that’s true though, he has a really bad gas tank then. He was fighting completely different during the first round and early in the second.
Anton Tabuena - February 6, 2012
He looked pretty chubby to me - he would be much better around 230
taptomyarmbar - February 6, 2012
Werdum did appear to gas
But he sure did keep up a constant pace, even if it was not that quick.
He seems to be working hard.
tkotom - February 6, 2012
hell yeah!
biggant - February 6, 2012 via mobile
Imagine how many cuts there would be if there were knees on the ground?
Better keep them banned.
Phildo - February 6, 2012
Almost as many as if elbows were allowed...
Good thing they don’t allow those… Wait!
Sweet Scientist - February 6, 2012
I hope Werdum’s knee is ok.
Ubernoober - February 6, 2012
Yikes
Bonedoctor - February 6, 2012 via mobile
I can't believe how much Werdum's standup has improved
he looked totally different then his last fight against Reem where he just flopped to the ground in a boring fight. Nelson took alot of punishment but kept coming which was sick.
biggant - February 6, 2012 via mobile
shows the respect he had for reems striking i guess
i’d prolly have flopped too against that monster
Cunny - February 6, 2012
You really weren't watching the Reem fight very well
Werdum had shockingly good striking in that fight, especially considering he was fighting the K-1 champ. IMO he clearly won round 1, as Overeem barely landed anything substantial and Werdum landed over twice as many shots. Ironically, after avoiding Werdum’s guard for two rounds, it was Overeem’s LnP top control in round three that won him the fight.
In fights with flopping, I give blame to both fighters, and actually a little more to the guy standing. If your opponent is just laying on his back and you don’t take top control or rain down strikes from above, then you’re refusing to engage.
A flopper is a lot easier to hit (and has a harder time hitting back) than a backpedaler. If I was trying to make a fight entertaining, and I had to choose between the two, I would definitely pick the former.
paythefighters - February 6, 2012
His clinch has always been nasty
discoandherpes - February 6, 2012
That was seconds before his head spun around 360 degrees and he spewed out green shit.
Burkey22 - February 6, 2012
Makes you wonder...
With how difficult Roy is to finish by everyone from JDS to Werdum, makes you really have to appreciate the legendary power of Andre Arlovski. It’s a shame that man’s chin failed him.
Matt Buckley - February 6, 2012
I don't think it was so much his chin as it was his striking defense
He got KO’d by some really powerful strikes that would likely finish most HWs. In his fight with Silva, he took some major shots without losing consciousness. When you fight guys like Fedor, Rogers, and Kharitonov, you can’t let them connect cleanly. While Fedor was bound to connect sooner or later, Andrei should have been able to avoid the strikes from an unrefined Rogers and old/slow Kharitonov.
paythefighters - February 6, 2012
oh that gotta be the..
..vagina-on-forehead-syndrome they were talkin about?
yikes.
IGotBallsOfSteel - February 6, 2012
Suggestion for fan post...hint...
Roy has three fight bonuses in six fights with UFC. That’s a pretty impressive record, and it just adds to the general impression that he’s a guy who gives UFC and fans what they hope for in a fighter.
I wonder who the top ten guys are in either percentage of fights where they received a bonus or just straight up number of bonuses.

I'm pretty sure it's Chris Lytle, however you look at it.
VenusBlue - February 6, 2012
This is what Roy Nelson did to Werdum´s face!
Rodrigo T Paulino - February 6, 2012
i bet this is Roys first time with a vag on his face
