UFC light heavyweight Brandon Vera has been waiting for a while now to get a second shot at Thiago Silva. Silva has been out for a year on suspension, and when Vera was offered the rematch as the main event of a scheduled May 15th UFC card, he jumped at the chance. But it turns out he jumped way too quickly and he isn't able to fight after all. He explained everything in a video he posted on his Facebook page. Here's what he has to say:
"Hey everybody, it's Brandon "The Truth" Vera here. I wanted to clear up some stuff, and apologize. I've been bugging my manager, I've been bugging Joe Silva and the UFC, so as soon as Thiago Silva's suspension was over and he was available, I would like to be the first one to fight him and get back in there with him. Kind of a welcome back thing. Finally the fight came, Joe said the fight can happen May 15th. My manager told me the fight is happening May 15th...and without thinking, without talking to my coaches, without talking to my doctors, I verbally said 'Yes, I'm down for the fight, let's do this, let's get it done. I'm in.' Super excited, hung up the phone, promptly went on a run, and got super excited.
The next morning I went to my doctors after training and told my doctors that I was planning on fighting May 15th, and...everybody looked at me like I was crazy. They said there's no way I'll be ready by then, and I need to focus on getting better. So I sat down and was thinking 'Yeah, maybe those guys are right.' So I didn't check with my doctors, I didn't check with my coaches. I apologize to both you guys. I apologize to Joe Silva and my manager Matt Stansell. I apologize to my fans. I still wanna fight you bad Thiago, Thiago, however you say your name juice monkey. I still wanna fight you bad. So whenever you're ready, whenever I'm healthy enough, I'm your huckleberry."
Back at UFC 125, Silva dominated Vera in a unanimous decision win that led to Vera getting released. Silva then submitted a false urine sample, thinking he would test positive for illegal substances, and got caught by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. This led to the fight being switched to a no-contest, Silva got suspended, and Vera got a reprieve from his release. Vera met Eliot Marshall at UFC 137 and picked up a decision win, but injured his arm in the process. This arm injury is what is keeping him out of the fight.
So, Silva will likely get a new opponent for the 5/15 card and Vera will have to sit and wait on the sidelines until he heals up.

It'll be nice to see Thiago fight someone relevent. I like Vera, but Thiago deserves someone a little higher up the totem.
Maybe the mighty Swede?

I think he needs a bit of a tune up
he’s been gone for more than a year, he would definitely be rusty.
av1o3 - February 6, 2012
Hasn’t been out with an injury though. Shouldn’t be that bad, if he used the time wisely.
KGNLuc - February 7, 2012
I thought that Vera would be a good comeback fight for Thiago Silva to shake off the ring rust.

oh boy this thread has potential for endless amounts of fun

winner of Rampage vs Bader (spoiler: Rampage)
Tats16 - February 6, 2012
am i the only one that thinks rampage pulls a mike tyson in japan?
no titile hopes anymore, gets fat, parties with too many local ladies, takes bader lightly, then gets ktfo?
gspmademegay - February 6, 2012
kinda agreeing with you there.
I feel like bader is gonna tito rampage
benten20 - February 6, 2012 via mobile
not sure i have the stones to pick bader on playground
but i wouldnt be shocked at all if he won.
gspmademegay - February 6, 2012
i might pick bader
benten20 - February 6, 2012 via mobile
Don't forget
Bader just got subbed by Tito
polevaultking - February 6, 2012
so rampagell sub him?
gspmademegay - February 6, 2012
kinda just meant upset rampage lol
benten20 - February 6, 2012 via mobile
was replying to polevaultkingoflimbs there.
gspmademegay - February 6, 2012
I’ve definitely considered it, but you have to remember that he pleaded for a fight in Japan. It’s something that he wanted, he even said so right after his loss to Jones. He loves the Japanese fans. I think that may be enough motivation for him.
mburtoni - February 6, 2012 via mobile
This is what I'm thinking
I think hes motivated enough, and excited about mma again, at least for this one fight just because its in Japan. I think he smashes Bader.
Tats16 - February 6, 2012
i think you you mean ‘fans.’
gspmademegay - February 6, 2012
Rampage is the better striker and wrestler
I see no way Bader cracks Rampage’s chin either.
discoandherpes - February 6, 2012
I’m going to play it safe and wait for psychoblack’s pre-fight analysis before taking a position on the Rampage/Bader match up.
sheldonlevene - February 7, 2012
smart move by vera.
silva will probably beat a better opponent, then get a better one after that. then vera wont have to have his face destroyed again.
gspmademegay - February 6, 2012
this wouldve made such an easy pick for playground though

Huckleberry?
Shaun32887 - February 6, 2012
Tombstone quote, yo
Ziggy325 - February 6, 2012
Thanks
Shaun32887 - February 6, 2012
"I'm your huckleberry."
It is a quote from the utterly fantastic movie ‘Tombstone’
It is not a reference to Huckleberry Finn.
Back in the day “I’m your huckleberry” was the equivalent of saying ’I’m the man for the job’ which then evolved more to saying ’I’m a bit better at it than you’
Basically, if someone has a task that needs to be fulfilled, or they are challenging someone, or they are claiming to be the best at something….“I’m your huckleberry” is a pretty appropriate response in all 3 cases.
Chris Groves - February 6, 2012
He can’t just give Silva a shot at his LHW and HW belts that easily.
MPos - February 6, 2012
Hah!
mburtoni - February 6, 2012 via mobile
The hell did he tear in his arm?
menckenstein - February 6, 2012
I believe Marshall broke it in the last round of their fight
Unless he re-injured it in a different way.
Chris Groves - February 6, 2012
Glad his doctor shot that date down
Because I really didn’t want to see that fight again
menckenstein - February 6, 2012
Looking at Thiago bitchslapping Vera and using him as his personal bongo?
Heh, I know worse ways to spend 15 minutes.
Sweet Scientist - February 6, 2012
Yeah it was entertainign but a rematch would be meaningless right now
menckenstein - February 6, 2012
I agree that it's meaningless. I don't really care for it.
I was more reacting to the ‘really don’t want to see it". It gave Vera a chance (however slim) to get revenge and was a good way to shake ring rust for Thiago. I’m not even slightly bummed that it won’t happen though.
Sweet Scientist - February 6, 2012
Yeah it wouldn't be a terrible fight I'd rather see them do something else.
Tito v Vera should happen tomorrow.
menckenstein - February 6, 2012
I'm bummed
I wanted to see Vera get smashed again.
NickaG - February 6, 2012
we all all. this is a support group. we know your pain.
gspmademegay - February 6, 2012
I dont know how to say this but....
Is Vera a bit…… touched?
Before agreeing to a fight wouldn’t it have been….smart to check with your doctor to see if your cleared of any injuries to fight before verbally agreeing to another match?
jack knight starman - February 6, 2012 via mobile

Bonner or rampage throw bonner a bone and give him the big name he has been asking for.

Tim Burke - February 6, 2012

sorry, the Truth is Thiago would wreck Vera permanently if they fought again.
elmojo - February 6, 2012
Lloyd Irvin: Now you didn’t even see that comin’, did ya? And that’s comin’ from a broken down punk like me. What… what do ya think the Juice Monkey would do to ya?
Brandon Vera: Hurt me bad, I guess…
Lloyd Irvin: Na, he’d hurt ya permanent. Permanent!
