We'll be sure to ask Roth the most important question...

Are there train yards in Vegas?

WE AREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE LIVE!

Totally perplexed by the “controversy” surrounding the 143 main event.

The first word that comes to mind when I hear “MMA fan” is “fickle.” No surprises here.

People came in with preconceived notion that this would be some balls-to-the-wall rock’em sock’em brawl bro-fest. Instead they got an MMA fight.

“Boring” Brian Hemminger

When are the Browns ever in the Super Bowl…?

And Michigan State hasn’t been relevant since Mateen Cleaves.

LOL at "Browns" and "Super Bowl" in the same sentence.
LOL

Four Final Fours since Mateen left.

…how many have they won?

Dawg, your only good player ever has been Kevin Pittsnogle.

Or, you know, Devin Ebanks. Or Kevin Jones. Then again, I’m not under the delusion that we do anything relevant other than be a consistent entry into the NCAA tournament.

Condit only landed 2 more total strikes than Diaz in the first and 6 more significant strikes. Diaz landed 16-7 head shots in the first and 11-7 to the body. But Condit’s 16-1 leg kicks is stunning.

That said, I still scored round one for Diaz.

Cecil Peoples wants that last statistic stricken from the record as it is not in any way relevant to a fight.

There seems to be two camps of thought in the fallout of the event: The “robbery of the century Condit ran like Starnes” camp, and the “you’re an idiot for implying that this was the robbery of the century and that Condit ran the whole fight” camp. I’m just wondering how Carlos Condit will match-up with GSP.

This fight wasn’t the most exciting thing I’ve ever seen. But it was backed by the drama that Nick Diaz and Condit built on UFC Primetime and it was stunning to see a gameplan work so well, not unlike Sonnen-Silva I. Sonnen vs. Silva was not exciting to watch in terms of the actual fight, but the gameplan was really stunning to see. That is how I liken it anyway.

Yeah that’s pretty much exactly how I feel.

It makes me a little ill seeing Condit get emotional having the belt put around his waste, and then getting boo’d. Give the guy a break, he did nothing wrong.

But to argue your point, because Diaz acts like leg kicks are irrelevant and he is impervious to them, does that make them seem less relevant? Is Diaz’s pandering to the lack of pain those legkicks cause him working in his favor?

well, some people can take shots better than others

It doesn’t make those shots insignificant.

I don’t argue that, but does it lessen the significance of the strikes in some judges’ and fans’ eyes? I definitely think it could.

Depends on how the particular judges view damage. We’ve seen it go either way. See: Diego Sanchez vs Martin Kampmann.

If Nick Diaz thinks leg kicks are irrelevant, he wouldn’t have taken Cyborg to the ground.

didn't Cyborg take him down and then get submitted?

That’s how I remember

True. Diaz did engage the clinch though once he had clearly had enough of Cyborg’s leg kicks.

If he's taking leg kicks from Thiago Alves, he wouldn't be calling them baby leg kicks.
Here's what Greg Jackson had to say

http://cagejunkies.com/2012/02/greg-jackson-defends-carlos-condits-ufc-143-strategy/

On what happened in the octagon:

"That was the game plan," said Jackson. "When you are fighting a guy like Nick who is so amazing and he does things so well, the last thing you want to do is sit kind of flat footed and get in a face punching contest with him."

On others who have employed a similar strategy:

"And so ‘m sorry there’s flack going around the Internet, but If you don’t appreciate the way Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard or some of these great guys that do their sticking and moving, I don’t know what to tell you."

On the plan itself:

"I’m no rocket scientist, but hitting a lot and not getting hit … sounds like a good idea."

On dictating the pace:

"At that crucial time, at that pivotal third round, when Nick started to slow down, Carlos started to speed up. So sometimes you can go and use, you can stay away from someone’s strengths. Certainly we did that …" Jackson said. "In addition to that, you can go after someone’s strengths. Nick’s strength is pace, and so we wanted to slow down that pace a lot, and let Carlos dictate that."
Carlos WILL get taken down by GSP. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when and how many times.

So if I were Condit, I’d come out going for the kill every time I am on the feet.

“Carlos WILL get taken down by GSP. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when and how many times can he get back to his feet?”

Pretty much. I think GSP could submit him late if Condit gasses.

He definitely appeared to have a DEEP gas tank Sat., but then again he wasn’t being smothered by top control for five rounds.

Even if he doesn’t gas, I have a hard time seeing him beating GSP. Cause he’s not going to win on points. He’ll basically have to finish. And nothing he showed last Saturday lends me to believe he can even challenge GSP seriously.

Condit should fight again before November. Not necessarily Nick, but someone.

Otherwise, what is the point of an interim belt? Isn’t the point of such a belt to keep the division moving while the champ is out? If he’s going to sit out until he gets GSP, Dana might as well issue another interim-interim belt. Because none of it matters then. But I understand why Condit might want to sit out.

Greg Jackson

I normally have a lot of time for Greg Jackson, but he didn’t come off well on yesterday’s MMA Hour. He sounded like someone who talks out of both sides of their moth. Sorry, Greg.

And Ariel Herwani is a stirrer.

CABBAGE! CABBAGE! CABBAGE!

Cesar Gracie

And he came off equally as bad. He can’t make up his mind who to blame. He says Diaz won the fight, but then he’s angry at Conduit for ‘cheating’ Diaz out of the fight. I don’t know how good he is at cornering, but he’s a whiny beach.

Really interesting story from MiddleEasy. I feel like the rematch is inevitable.

Wow. Guess Canada didn’t want their boy to get that fight he wanted, eh? That poll map just looks silly.

Boost mobile, yall!
i don't think the people coming out the woodwork complaining about the "controversial" decision ever spoke about the "sport"

I think the media are missing the point when criticising the MMA community’s reaction to the Diaz v Conduit fight. I think the anger being felt shows that Diaz may be a bigger star and fan favourite than people realise.

Reposting for relevance.

It didn’t have a lot of “oh shit!” moments, but it still made me “wow” at the end, which to me is more important.

Not all fight fans are sports fans. This will always be an inherently divisive aspect of the fan-base of mixed martial arts.

Diaz has no footwork and it showed in that fight.

Diaz v Conduit = Machida v Rampage

your continued mispelling of Condit's name is annoying

We got it already

The Gracie family started the UFC to showcase jiu jitsu....

Maybe Team Diaz needs to come up with Phonebooth Fighting Championships to highlight their personal skills.

Holy jesus, the fallout from this fight is absolutely off the wall….!!

I can’t wait till we’ve all moved on, it’s not even fun to debate anymore…

The lack of civility about all this really disgusts me.

I had it 48-47 Diaz, but I could understand why you had Condit or a draw or whatever.

Amen...

and so many people are only looking at a single aspect of the overall picture, and hanging onto it for dear life, refusing to think about other angles or possibilities.

Conversing over the internet about Condit/Diaz has become totally asinine.

MMA is probably my No 3 sport behind soccer and Formula 1.

At least you didn’t say NASCAR :)

Can you ask Roth why he feels people are so uncivil about the Condit-Diaz decision? If he needs me to reference something, look at the influx of people on here.

BECAUSE THESE PEOPLE ARE RETARDED

Also…I must ask. How do you feel about Johnny Ace being retained?! Good or great?

BEST.

I am Johnny Ace’s number one mark.

At least it shows people really cared about the fight.

Yeah...I mean indifference is worse

The term ‘retarded’ is quite offensive in Europe. Perhaps not so, elsewhere.

It's offensive in the United States as well

but people saying Carlos Condit’s game plan ruined the sport is retarded.

It used to be in the US but it became too impractical to correct people so it’s generally accepted in the “small-time public” (i.e. not in the media/public forum).

you have impressed me with your straight talk Roth.

Roth rules.

I used to play minor hockey (I’m Canadian. It’s basically a law here), but once I got into MMA, I stopped watching all other sports, even hockey. I still like playing sports in my spare time, but I do not enjoy watching sports anymore. I lost interest.

mma

ruined you for other sports!

It really did.

1) I rented the early UFC tapes, then lost interest for years. Then I got back into it when I saw Hughes / Trigg II. When Hughes slammed Trigg, I lost my mind.
2) I got obsessed. Next thing I know, I’m watching every pride and UFC fight, and six months later, I realized I didn’t care about other sports.
3) Every fight is like a playoff eliminator. Other sports just don’t match MMA in terms of excitement for me.
4) MMA to me is the purest sport. No special shoes, no special sticks: just a couple guys in a cage. It’s great.

I had never found a sport I was truly passionate about until I discovered MMA. I always followed sports, but it was more to be socially versatile than due to any authentic interest. Other athletic contests just don’t feel like they’re on the same level as two highly-skilled men engaged in combat in a fenced cage with nearly limitless possible outcomes.

*should’ve said “athletes” instead of “men.”

I always followed sports, but it was more to be socially versatile than due to any authentic interest.

The social aspect is big. I mean, even though I don’t watch any other sports anymore, I’m still sports-minded, in that I can just sit down and watch a game with someone and not be a fish out of water. I know all the rules still, I can still go to a pickup game of basketball and do fine. Like you, it’s about passion. I’m just not passionate.

I’m just not passionate about anything other than MMA, I mean to say.

It’s huge. I think my childhood would’ve been much different if I had been adverse to sports. I remember it was always fun to play, just not much fun to watch. My Dad’s passion for the 49ers really made me want to try to get into it though. It was always fun to watch with him since he would yell at the TV and all that.

My dad and I watched the Oilers run during their dynasty.

One of my favorite sports memories with my dad. That’s why I got into hockey.

Setanta Sports had the UFC over hear and I susbcribed when they got the rights to English Premier League. I was channel surfing and found UFC 80 on Setanta Sports 1 there was nothing good on that night so I watched the card and was hooked.

The ol’ “faucet forehead” fight eh?

I’m not a diehard sports fan like I used to be when I was a lot younger. But I still give things a chance and watch whatever whenever. I mostly follow college basketball and football (college or pro) now, along with pro wrestling. I used to be obsessed with all sports, but I guess I grew out of it.

Welcome back to Planet Earth!

and the broadcast

Brian needs HRT

I'm confused
He's saying

you need more testosterone.

Maybe we need to get you a Bellator tape or something to regain your enthusiasm.

For me, I feel more of a connection to MMA because I grew up with the sport. I literally came in with Brock Lesnar and watched it grow as I matured. Also, I feel more like a fighter because it is accessible to the normal guy. You can go down and train in the sport in almost any town.

For other sports, you can’t really train with Mike Piazza and learn to be a great catcher and get passing lessons from Tom Brady. Youth sports traumatized me because I realized that I was never going to be one of those athletes. I couldn’t relate to the athletes.

Hopefully MMA will never lose it's accessability...

that’s a big part of what makes it great, imo.

I have stayed up to 5-6am to watch UFC fights. Although I will skip fights if I’m going to Old Trafford the following day. I do have large collection of UFC & Pride DVD’s although that’s mainly due to a desire to learn more about the history of the sport.

*Season Ticket holder & big Man United Fan.
*I will watch the fights on Tape delay the following evening.

It sucks for a lot of international fans that the UFC operates almost exclusively around US ET/PT. I sympathize.

I’ve spent many a Sunday in tired haze.

I used to watch the entirety of DREAM, SENGOKU, and K-1 fights on HdNet. I would even adjust my sleep schedule so I could make sure to see it all live. What a great channel.

Also, on pro wrestling. As a kid, it was the closest thing you could watch to real violence when you were younger that your parents would allow. Also, it captivated you with the cartoonish storylines and characters. As I grew up, it became more and more fake and stale. It lead me into boxing and MMA.

Lol I remember seeing the first UFC in 1993 when I was little and I thought “these guys would get killed by WWF wrestlers.”

MMA is fascinating on so many levels, and there something there for almost anyone (strategy, skill, will, composure). Football will always be no1—Arsenal!—but MMA is a great number 2.

Sadly, it’s still very niche here in Europe.

8-2

You should have beaten that line-up 18-2. Shame on you.

Since I've found MMA, other sports seem to pale in comparison....

It didn’t happen over night, but I get more and more into MMA, and care less and less about keeping up with specific teams and seasons.

I’ve always played and enjoyed basketball, but the NBA has been plauged with internal issues and inconsistancies. I just don’t care much about it now.

Baseball, fuck baseball.

NFL, still pretty awesome, and there’s no MMA on Sundays usually.

NHL, don’t follow a team or the season, but will always watch playoff hockey, regardless of who’s playing.

Golf….. uh, the driving range is always a good time.

MMA has become my muse.

I religously watched UFC Unleashed when it was regularly on ESPN Thursday Nights, same when TUF was on classic. The first time I saw Griffin/Bonnar was New Years 09.

Gotta agree with the social comments made above...

playing sports was just that, playing. That’s how you interacted with other kids and had a good time. Imagine kids like those Ruffo brothers who come up ‘playing’ MMA, instead of little league. That’s the future, and that seems pretty exciting.

Also, a lot of MMA were not necessarily social butterflies and caught on to the sport because it was the closest thing you could get to kung fu movies and it was an underground thing. I love that MMA fans are a pack of nerds really, but it is such an awesome collective.

The key is to be both a jock and a nerd. It makes you popular, but keeps you humble.

Bravo BE radio....

this conversation has been 100x better than rehashing the same tired storylines from Condit/Diaz that we’ve all already heard over the last 72 hours.

Hahahaha, good thing you got here late

Because that was the first part of the show.

But really glad you enjoyed it!

Nice, we'll pretend it was intentional!

As for Condit/Diaz, oh my lord, I’ve probably typed out and deleted 50 posts/comments over the last couple days, on multiple websites, then I would just shaking and looking for sharp objects….

Or Melvin Guillard?

Jackson on Jackson violence?

Forgot. Damnit.

Oh yeah...

Guillard is a Blackzilian now. Still, seems too soon.

Was just gonna say this.

Beat me to it.

What about Melvin Guillard? Too soon?

Sherk vs Maynard. Let’s see what the Muscle Shark’s got left.

Evan Dunham for Cowboy

Donald Cerrone-Nik Lentz! Book it!

Barboza vs Cerrone.

Cerrone v Guida

Mac Danzig?

Nevermind. He is Efrain’s next opponent.

fighting Escudero in Atlanta

Tough, tough fight for Escudero

Where is Forest? Is he the new Bellator correspondent?

Forrest is only with us on a part time basis now.

Donald Cerrone vs. Paul Sass!

Donald Cerrone vs. Jacob Volkmann!

I like the way you think, sir.

I still can't believe people are so stupid that they don't know what freaking channel the UFC event is on.

People flip around their TVs like zombies. They see “UFC” in the program guide and just assume it’s not on another channel.

This makes me sad.

Even crazier to me...

is when someone tweets a member of the media where/when they can find the fights, but can’t figure out Google holds all the answers they desire.

It’s amazing that so many people still don’t know how to use Google in 2012. People need to understand that internet=information, not just Facebook, Twitter and TMZ.

Can either of you watch the Fuel show?

Thiago Silva vs whatever animal he got the urine from!

LOL. Oh god. I hate living in Northern Virginia. My main event will be Thiago Silva vs. Igor Pokrajac?

I heard they wanted to feature Christine Santos on the card, but then realised ‘Cyborg on Fuel’ may not work. (Bmmm… Tsh…._

LOL

Spur of the moment. Appreciate it. That’s my joke quota for the year out of the way.

Brian has it for Kim Winslow, Bishop. Come on.

Nah. I bet she can beat him up.

When I see Winslow ref, I know at the very least there won’t be a premature stoppage.

Won’t be a premature anything…. (tasteless, I know)

Brian is not into Kim cause he's afraid she'll call him on an early stoppage.
that was good

deserves werd!

Winslow has a Nevada Licence and Big John doesn’t?

Oh god....

end the show!!

Thanks guys, had fun today.

Cheers, all.

That was fun, now back to Fifa 12.

Thanks everybody for listening!

We appreciate it!
